Dear Friends,

For many members of the Desert Botanical Garden family, 2011 will be remembered as a year of making new friends, reconnecting with longtime supporters, and developing major community partnerships and collaborations. Unique programs that were enjoyed by members and visitors in 2012 were nurtured and took root throughout the preceding year. Here is just a sampling of these activities:

Staff and Board members from the Garden and The Nature Conservancy invested significant time and energy in planning and funding Design for a Living World. Presented by The Nature Conservancy at the Garden, this innovative exhibition and accompanying lecture series beautifully reflected the missions of both organizations, encouraging strikingly inspired uses of sustainable materials and stewardship of Earth’s natural resources.

For many months, Ballet Arizona and the Garden worked together to design an outdoor space at the Garden to support seventeen performances of renowned Artistic Director Ib Andersen’s visionary ballet, Topia. This partnership brought the intersection of art and nature to a higher plane, and gave birth to an important new work of art that will challenge audiences to contemplate the vastness and complex beauty of the Sonoran Desert.

Reaching out to emerging professionals in our community, the Garden launched the Monarch Society, a new membership program that will connect young adults with our institution’s conservation efforts, scientific research, educational programs, plant collection, and exhibits. And in order to honor significant supporters and past service on the Board, the Garden also created The Ambassador’s Council, which will provide a forum for ongoing communication about the Garden’s long-range plan and strategic initiatives.

The following financial report from Treasurer Gail Bradley and the “In Appreciation” listing on the final pages of this report demonstrate that Garden leaders and staff, members, and the community-at-large continue to be incredibly generous and supportive of the Garden. Without your financial support, and the more than 77,000 hours of service contributed last year by the Garden’s corps of 1,040 volunteers, we could not possibly continue to achieve excellence in the Garden’s four key mission areas: Conservation, Education, Exhibition, and Research.

Despite continuing challenges in the regional and national economies, the Garden’s operations for the fiscal year ended September 30, 2011 were profitable, excluding depreciation expense and excluding losses in the Foundation’s investments. Net operating income prior to these two expense items was $41,902.

Fortunately, the Garden’s revenue streams provide a broad base of support with 86% coming from four diverse sources: Admissions, $2.38 million; Contributions, $2.24 million; Memberships, $1.84 million; and Retail and Beverage Sales, $1.38 million.

• Total revenue declined 20% from $11.4 million last year to $9.14 million this year primarilydue to unrealized losses in the Garden’s endowment fund, a decline in Permanently Restricted endowment donations as the Tending the Garden Campaign came to a close, and the receipt Tending the Garden Campaign came to a close, and the receipt Tending the Gardenof fewer unrestricted bequests

• Admissions declined 3.8% primarily in the early calendar months of 2011. WeWeW attribute thisdecline, in part, to the continued downturn in tourism and the lack of a vibrant wildflower season in the Spring of 2011

• Total expenditures were reduced by approximately 3% to keep operating expenses in linewith revenues

Our change in net assets was ($2,006,111), primarily as the result of depreciation of $1.268 million and unrealized losses of $780,000 on endowment investments as the stock market was in a slump at the end of this report time period.

The Desert Botanical Garden’s Statement of Position reflects the use of a $1 million line of credit with Chase Bank and long-term debt of $250,000 used for the renovation of Ullman Terrace to be financed by a matching donation from the Ullman Foundation over five years.

The Garden’s Statement of Position remains strong and is improving, as the Garden continues to provide a first-class experience for its visitors, members and the scientific community.

The Statement of Activities above reports the results of Garden Operations excluding the effect of depreciation expense. Depreciation refers to the systematic allocation of the cost of long-lived assets, including buildings, furniture, fixtures, and equipment to the periods that benefit from their use. Recording depreciation has no effect on the liquidity or cash flow of the Garden. It reflects an estimate of the using up of the economic value of tangible assets. In the financial statements it reduces the Change in Net Assets (and, therefore, Total Net Assets) and the carrying basis of Property and Equipment.

Unlike industrial firms, not-for-profit organizations do not provide for the addition or replacement of major long-lived assets out of operations. Historically such entities look to capital contributions for those improvements. Hence, the financial performance for not-for-profits is best evaluated by analyzing operating results excluding the effects of depreciation. Depreciation expense recognized in the Garden’s records for 2011 and 2010 was $1,268,000 and $1,272,000 respectively.

Paul Lorah and his late wife Estelle were Garden volunteers for almost 20 years. Their efforts on behalf of the Garden included work as a Wednesday Hort aide, recording rainfall and saguaro growth, volunteering in the Seed Room and diligently assisting the Business Office. Estelle was known as Luminaria “Cookie Luminaria “Cookie LuminariaQueen.” A memorial bench on the short cut path south of Stardust Plaza ensures that Estelle will be remembered at the Garden. Paul’s desire to include the Garden in his estate plan will also honor their mutual involvement for years to come.

I chose to honor my husband, John, at the Desert Botanical Garden because, other than four years of college in the east, he spent his entire life here in Arizona, loving the desert and the history of the state. His parents took him to every corner of the state on their travels, researching the books they wrote. He is of this soil. The Garden is the perfect place to remember him, have a moment of peace and take away some of the love he had for the desert when you leave.

In Memory of Billie Jane Baguley

The Desert Botanical Garden lost a great friend and stalwart supporter with the recent passing of Billie Jane Baguley. A member of the Garden since the early 1990s, she annually provided support for the Schilling Library and her gift to the Growing a Legacy for GenerationsCampaign established the Becker Library Archives in honor of her parents.

Billie Jane was a member of both the Patron’s Circle and of the Garden’s Sonoran Circle legacy society. She made major gifts to the Tending the Garden Campaign and Tending the Garden Campaign and Tending the Gardento the Desert Towers Initiative, helping us to build the endowment and to purchase the Chihuly sculpture that graces our entrance.

We will miss her spirit, energy and unflagging support.
