From the President:
Hello Fellow Mashies,
Well, my first term is almost over, and it’s voting time again. I must tell you that I have thoroughly enjoyed serving as your president for the last
two years. As you are all probably aware, I am on the ballot again for the privilege of being your president for one more term. It remains my
goal to have events that will attract not only the regular monthly golfers, but the occasional golfers, as well as the non-golfers. This is your club,
and I want to ensure that you enjoy your member privileges.
Our 4th Quarter General Meeting will be at 6:00 pm. on Thursday,
November 14th, at Hensley Brewing Company, 4201 N. 45th Avenue, Phoenix. In addition to enjoying a light meal of fish & chips, you will
receive up-to-date info on the Club; and (last but not least) the Voting Committee will be on hand to accept your ballots. So come on out, bring
your ballot, and let’s fellowship at this meeting.
As I reported in the last newsletter, on September 6th - 40 Desert Mashie members, family members and friends traveled to Tucson to help the
Desert Trails Golf Club celebrate their 42nd Annual. Twenty five Desert Mashie members and guests played in the 2-day tournament. The Omni
Tucson National Golf Resort & Spa was the host hotel and also housed the home courses of the tournament. The accommodations were
outstanding, and the golf course was in great shape. Oh, by the way, we exceeded our participation rate from last year – WE DOUBLED IT!
Posted again in this newsletter are the results of this
tournament.
Our Annual Club Championship Tournament was held on September 21st
and 22nd at Pebble Creek. We played the Eagle’s Nest and Tuscany Falls Courses. Farther into this Newsletter are reports of the winners, as well
as the rankings of the players. The awards will be presented at the New Year’s Eve Dinner/Dance.

We made our annual trip to Las Vegas last month. We chartered a bus which made 2
departure stops – one from Wild Horse Pass Casino, in Chandler, and the final departure from the site of the Maricopa County Events Center in Sun City West.
There were 25 riders on the bus. The Club provided goodie bags for all, and a stipend to everyone for breakfast.
We left on Friday morning, made a stop at McDonald’s in Wickenburg for breakfast,
then made another stop at Popeye’s for lunch, and arrived at our hotel at around 2:30 p.m. Many kudos to Barbara Davis Hines who stepped in and became the
facilitator for this trip. Barbara did an outstanding job keeping us entertained for the entire trip. We had Bingo games, Door Prizes, and watched 2 videos. Oh, and we
were also entertained by the melodic voice of our very own Daniel Moss. This was a very leisurely and fun trip, so get ready and be part of our next fun trip. Including the
25 who were on the bus trip, there were 39 Desert Mashie members and friends who traveled to Las Vegas to help Valley View celebrate their 55th Annual Tournament.
Despite the fact that The Valley View Club, as well as many of us, were still mourning the very recent and sudden loss of their Tournament Director Jonnie (JB) Williams,
they put on a very successful tournament. We had 2 days of great golf, fun, and superb camaraderie. I am sure it was not an easy undertaking, but the fact that JB’s
widow, Cynthia, came out in support was an inspiration to her fellow Club members, and to all who attended.
The courses were outstanding and the weather was great. The hotel rooms were very
nice and spacious, and the Hospitality Suite was one of the best setups I have experienced.
Several Desert Mashie members were winners in their flights, and brought home
trophies and/or cash. The results of this tournament are posted later in this Newsletter.
I don’t know of any big casino winners from our trip, but apparently several of us (my wife included) paid our dues to the casino(s). Also, some of the wiser ones went
shopping, and had something to bring back as souvenirs, rather than an
empty wallet, like somebody I know.

We are looking for a good turnout at our Member Appreciation picnic which will be
on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 17, immediately following our November
Shoot Tournament. The picnic will be held at Aguila Park, 8440 S 35th
Ave., Phoenix. The event will be catered by Famous Dave’s BBQ , and is
free to all members + 1 guest. Please see our continuing e-mails which contain more details on this event. So, to our golfers, it’s not too late to sign up to play in this
tournament. You can sign up for the tournament on the website (www.desertmashie.org), or by contacting George Colebrook at (602) 430-0098. To
our member golfers who will not be playing in the tournament, and non-golfer members, please contact Carolyn Suttles if you would like to sign up for the picnic.
You can send her an e-mail to [email protected] or call her at (602) 568-3812. Also, please let her know if you will be bringing a guest or guests, and how many.
Please provide Carolyn your count no later than Friday, November 8.
Carolyn is also finalizing plans for our annual New Year’s Eve dinner/dance which will
be after the New Year’s Eve tournament on December 31st. I will keep you posted on that event when the plans have been finalized. However, you can sign up for the New
Year’s Eve tournament now on the Desert Mashie website.
Last, but certainly not least – IT’S MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL TIME. You can renew your membership by logging into the website (www.desertmashie.org), or by
completing the hard copy application. Annual membership dues are $100.00 for golfers, and $55.00 for non-golfers. Also, any new members who join now will enjoy
membership privileges for the remainder of this year thru December of next year. New members can complete membership registration in the website, or by completing
the application contained in this newsletter. The application is the last page of newsletter.

While some of us were in Las Vegas, trying for the BIG ONE, Griff Hall remained at
home to help run our home tournament, and got a at the Desert Mashie tournament on Sunday, October 20. The tournament was at Sun City South Golf Course. Griff's Hole-In-One was on Hole # 5 -- 141 yds. -- over water.

The True Rules Of Golf - Part 2 of 4
o Golfers who claim they don't cheat, also lie.
o If you're afraid a full shot might reach the green while the foursome ahead of you is still putting out, you have two options: you can immediately shank a lay-up, or you can wait until the green is clear and top a ball halfway there.
o The less skilled the player, the more likely he is to share his ideas about the golf swing.
o The inevitable result of any golf lesson is the instant elimination of the one critical unconscious motion that allowed you to compensate for all your errors.
o If it ain't broke, try changing your grip.
o It's not a gimme if you're still away. o Everyone replaces his divot after a
perfect approach shot. o A golf match is a test of your skill
against your opponent's luck. o It's surprisingly easy to hole a 50-
foot putt when you lie 10. o Counting on your opponent to inform
you when he breaks a rule is like expecting him to make fun of his own haircut.
The True Rules Of Golf - Part 3 of 4
Non chalant putts count the same as chalant putts.
The shortest distance between any two points on a golf course is a straight line that passes directly through the center of a very large tree.
There are two kinds of bounces: unfair bounces and bounces just the way you meant to play it.
You can hit a 2-acre fairway 10% of the time, and a 2-inch branch 90% of the time.
Every time a golfer makes a birdie, he must subsequently make two triple bogeys to restore the fundamental equilibrium of the universe.
If you want to hit a 7-iron as far as Tiger Woods does, simply try to lay up just short of a water hazard.
To calculate the speed of a player's downswing, multiply the speed of his backswing by his handicap. Example: backswing 20 mph, handicap 15, downswing 300 mph.
The True Rules Of Golf - Part 4 of 4
There are two things you can learn by stopping your backswing at the top and checking the position of your hands: how many hands you have, and which one is wearing the glove.
Hazards attract. Fairways repel. You can put "draw" on the ball, you can put "fade" on the ball, but no golfer can put
"straight" on the ball. A ball you can see in the rough from 50 yards away is not yours. If there is a ball in the fringe and a ball in the bunker, your ball is the one in the bunker If both balls are in the bunker, yours is in the footprint. Don't buy a putter until you've had a chance to throw it.

Has anyone been watching The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross with
Henry Louis Gates, Jr.? I watched and 1st of the series and have recorded the first 3 parts of this very interesting, 6-part series. I noticed that it is being rerun several times,
so if you missed a segment, you might be able to view it later. You can do a search for the program on your computer or TV to see when it will be showing again.
Below is a short synopsis of this series.
“This fall, noted Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr. recounts the full trajectory of
African-American history in his groundbreaking new six-part series premiering Tuesdays,
October 22, 29 – November 5, 12, 19 and 26, 2013, 8-9 p.m. ET on PBS (check local listings). Written and presented by Professor Gates, the six-hour series explores the
evolution of the African-American people, as well as the multiplicity of cultural institutions, political strategies, and religious and social perspectives they
developed — forging their own history, culture and society against unimaginable odds. Commencing with the origins of slavery in Africa, the series
moves through five centuries of remarkable historic events right up to the present — when America is led by a black president, yet remains a nation
deeply divided by race.”
Handy Sandy Too many people think that a sand wedge is just for bunker shots. The sand wedge should be used for sand shots as well as most pitch shots to the green. The sand wedge whether a 54-degree or 58-degree has "bounce" on the sole of the club. This is where the back trailing edge is lower than the front leading edge, but used properly or improperly as the case may be is a very forgiving design built into this specific club to help in a variety of lies and situations. Use it on your short approaches instead of a pitching wedge you will be surprised!

A LITTLE HUMOR FOR YOUR DAY….. Rule Changes for Seniors
Rule 2.d.6 (B) A ball hitting a tree shall be deemed not to have hit the tree. This is simply bad luck and luck has no place in a scientific game. The senior player must estimate the distance the ball would have travelled if it had not hit the tree and play the ball from there. Rule 3.B.3 (G) There shall be no such thing as a lost ball. The missing ball is on or near the course and will eventually be found and pocketed by someone else, making it a stolen ball. The player is not to compound the felony by
charging himself or herself with a penalty. Rule 4.c.7 (h) If a putt passes over a hole without dropping, it is deemed to have dropped. The Law of Gravity supersedes the Rules of Golf. Rule 5 Putts that stop close enough to the cup that they could be blown in, may be blown in. This does not apply to balls more than three inches from the hole. No one wants to make a travesty of the game.
Rule 6.a.9 (k) There is no penalty for so-called "out of bounds". If penny-pinching golf course owners bought sufficient land, this would not occur.. The senior golfer deserves an apology, not a penalty. Rule 7..G.15 (z) There is no penalty for a ball in a water hazard, as golf balls should float. Senior golfers should not be penalized for manufacturers' shortcomings.
Rule 8.k.9 (S) Advertisements claim that golf scores can be improved by purchasing new golf equipment. Since this is financially impractical for many senior golfers, one-half stroke per hole may be subtracted for using old equipment. Please advise all your senior friends of these important rule changes. And they are written big enough that most of you should be able to read them!

Quotes:
Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated;
it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening - and it is
without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever
invented. - Arnold Palmer
What most people don't understand is that UFOs are
on a cosmic tourist route. That's why they're always seen in Arizona, Scotland, and New Mexico. Another
thing to consider is that all three of those destinations
are good places to play golf. So there's possibly some
connection between aliens and golf.
- Alice Cooper

HEARD A GOOD ONE…. Stevie Wonder and Jack Nicklaus are in a bar. Nicklaus turns to Wonder and says,
"How is the singing career going?"
Stevie Wonder says, "Not too bad, the latest album has gone into the top 10, so all in all I think it is pretty good. By the way how is the golf."
Nicklaus replies: "Not too bad, I am not winning as much as I used to but I'm still making a bit of money. I have some problems with my swing but I think I've got that
right now."
"I always find that when my swing goes wrong I need to stop playing for a while and think about it, then the next time I play it seems to be all right," says Stevie.
"You play golf!?" asks Jack.
Stevie says, "Yes, I have been playing for years."
"But I thought you were blind; how can you play golf if you are blind?" Jack asks.
"I get my caddie to stand in the middle of the fairway and he calls to me. I listen for the sound of his voice and play the ball towards him, then when I get to where the
ball lands the caddie moves to the green or further down the fairway and again I play
the ball towards his voice," explains Stevie.
"But how do you putt?" Nicklaus wondered.
"Well," says Stevie, "I get my caddie to lean down in front of the hole and call to me with his head on the ground and I just play the ball to the sound of his voice."
Nicklaus says, "What is your handicap?"
"Well, I play off scratch," Stevie assures Jack. Nicklaus is incredulous and says to
Stevie, "We must play a game sometime."
Wonder replies, "Well, people don't take me seriously so I only play for money, and I never play for less than $100,000 a hole."
Nicklaus thinks it over and says, "OK, I'm up for that. When would you like to play?"
"I don't care - any night next week is OK with me."

We are out of the hot summer months, but it is still
important to stay hydrated.
Hydration on the Course
“Stay hydrated” is a common phrase you often hear from playing sports and on the
golf course. Optimal hydration can improve your golf game mentally and
physically. Since the brain is made up of 85% of water and is water inefficient, it has
top priority in regards to blood circulation. Drinking the correct amount of water
will ensure optimal blood flow to the brain which will enable you to focus on the
golf course.
The human body is composed of 25% solid matter (solute) and 75% water
(solvent). For instance, the nucleus pulposus of an intervertebral disc is composed
mostly of water. The majority of the weight of the upper body is supported by this
water volume in the disc; therefore proper hydration can be a preventative
measure against low back pain. Water also acts as a lubricating agent for joints
which can relieve pain from chronic joint pathologies.
Now that you know the importance of proper hydration, the amount of water
consumed per day is critical to reach this goal. Some people say “drink lots of
water”. But what is a lot of water? Other say “drink 8 glasses of water per
day.” This is not an accurate way to determine the amount of water to drink each
day. For example if a female golfer weighs 100 pounds. 8 glasses of water may
cause over hydration. On the other hand if a male golfer weighs 200 pounds, 8
glasses of water falls far below the correct amount of water.
The optimal amount of water to drink is ½ your body weight (pounds) in ounces per
day. For example, a 200 lb. person will need to drink 100 ounces of water per
day. A key point to remember is that other fluids do not count toward your goal of
½ your bodyweight in ounces. Those fluids include: coffee, tea, juices, soda, milk,
sports drinks, and flavored water. In fact, other fluids like sports drinks and juices can
actually dehydrate the body because it takes water to actually dilute these high
sugar drinks before it is assimilated in the body.
Timing of water consumption is important to optimal hydration. Drinking water first
thing in the morning is critical because during sleep the body becomes
dehydrated. Therefore drinking water first thing in the morning is the first step to
optimal hydration. Start with 25% of your total water intake in the morning. If your
25
water intake for the day is 100 ounces, you would consume 25 ounces in the
morning. During a golf round you should consume 40% - 50% of your total daily
intake of water. If your water intake for the day is 100 ounces, you would consume
40-50 ounces of water on the golf course. The remaining water should be
consumed throughout the day.
The type of water you drink is important to achieving optimal hydration. 80% of
bottled waters are filtered tap waters. Choose a bottled water that has
approximately 200-300 parts per million (mg/L) of dissolved solids. This ensures a
proper amount of dissolved solids in the water to maintain proper hydration. High
quality water sources include Evian, Fiji, and Trinity. Water from Reverse Osmosis
units can be used but the dissolved solids can be quite low. A great way to
remedy this situation is to add a small pinch of Celtic Sea Salt to every liter of
water.
Celtic Sea Salt is an organic, unrefined sea salt that has over 80 trace minerals that
will help replenish the body with electrolytes. Not only does it replenish the
electrolytes in the body, it is a great way to prevent muscle cramps. Another great
benefit of using Celtic Sea Salt is the reduction of allergic tendencies. I have had
great results with golfers that have allergic symptoms due to pollen and
grass. Many have reported reduced symptoms of allergic reactions with the
proper amount of water and the addition of Celtic Sea Salt. Please do not
consume regular salt in the place of Celtic Sea Salt. Regular salt is just sodium
chloride which can be quite toxic when consumed on its own without the other
trace minerals.
Drinking the proper amount and correct type of water may be the missing link to
improving your golf game mentally and physically. So, here’s drinking to your golf
game and health.
