PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) is a technique thatis widely used in laboratories working with DNA andRNA samples. Because PCR amplification isextremely sensitive to contamination, the preventionof contamination requires good laboratory practicesto minimise external or cross-contamination duringsample preparation. The Astrea PCR cabinet hasbeen designed as an ideal environment for themanipulation of DNA and RNA, especially for the set-up of PCR assays. Manual wet process benches: polypropylene (acidbased), stainless steel (solvent based), with laminarair flowFelcon wet processing tools are used wheresubstrates or products require chemical etching orcleaning. This is often as part of a largermanufacture – of silicone wafers for example, or inmedical applications such as stent manufacture.

Felcon wet benches are either manually orautomatically operated with robotic product transfer.Felcon wet benches may be built using ‘FM’ (FactoryMutual) materials of construction with optional firedetection and suppression systems. They aresuitable for all types of clean rooms and may alsoincorporate laminar air flow with HEPA filters.

Through continuous in-house research anddevelopment, a combination of conventional andspecialist filter materials (some developed in-house)are employed in the production of high performancefilters to deal effectively with particulate matter,gaseous, bacterial and viral contaminants.

Felcon’s design expertise and vast range of filterproducts are utilised in a wide variety of marketsectors. In addition to providing conventional HEPAfilter products, Felcon is guided by the principles ofdeveloping effective, innovative and affordablesolutions to a rapidly increasing number of airquality and air filtration related problems.

Felcon Mini-Pleat Filtersincorporate acontinuously pleatedhigh-grade filter medium,separated from the nextby uniformly formedthermosetting adhesivebeads. The assembly is

sealed into a satin finished anodised aluminiumcase (as standard), with an appropriate single ordouble gasket added as required. Double face grillesare fitted as standard, to provide protection for thefilter face during transport, installation and underoperating conditions.

‘Gel-Seal’: A range of Mini-Pleat Filters are availablewith an extended case extrusion utilising a ‘liquidgel-seal’ (as opposed to a neoprene gasket).Alternatively, filters are supplied with a ‘knife edge’to suit ‘liquid gel-seal’ frame installations.

Special Features: The shallow depth, combined withits uniform ‘close-pleat’ design (lightweight with highair volume capacity), makes the Mini-Pleat the idealfilter for all laminar flow applications.

Caution: All Felcon HEPA and ULPA products areindividually tested and suitably packed for‘mainland’ transportation. In the event that anypackages show any sign of visible damage, theymust be signed for as ‘damaged’, and reported.Filters must be handled carefully and stored inclean, dry areas no more than 3 filters high. Deeppleat HEPA filters should be stored with the pleats inthe vertical plane. Care must be exercised inunpacking of boxes (particularly in instances wherethe filter has no face grilles). The box should beopened from the top, turned through 180º and theboxremovedfrom thefilter.

Using proven carbon filtration technology, Felconsupply a wide range of molecular filtration productsthat remove chemicals, environmental pollutantsand odours. Our standard HEPA filter range covers afull range of efficiencies, from G4-H13, in sizes andformats to suit most applications.

All filters are manufactured in the UK and Europe.Laboratory testing allows us to test our products forboth air flow and efficiencies down to the nano-particle range. In-house testing combined withexternal certification provides assurance that theproduction processes and final products meet allindustry standards.

The Felcon technical sales and service teamsprovide a range of services to ensure customers arefully acquainted with developments in the filtrationworld, following indoor air quality best practice andachieving the best possible balance of energy savingand performance. Felcon can also supply filters formost competitor hoods and cabinets. We have ourown service department who are able to service anyitem of your equipment. Filter casings are manufactured from either Zintecsteel or thermo-plastic sheet depending on the sizeand contaminants. The carbon is retained in thefilter casing by thermally bonding or clinching anenclosing media to both sides of the filter case.Gaskets and handles are fitted as required.

Pre-Filters: To protect and extend the life of carbonfilters, a particulate pre-filter should be fitted to theair-on face of the carbon filter. Packs of pre-filtersare available.

Specifically selected grades of carbon, includingbase and chemically impregnated, are used toprovide effective filtration to ensure adsorption ofthe organic and inorganic substances requiringremoval. Only high activity carbon grades are used toensure maximum contaminant loading and lifeexpectancy while providing 99.9% efficiency rates.

Testing and quality assurance: All of our carbonfume cabinet filters are tested using a DOP particlescanning test and guaranteed to meet BS7989.Certificates of conformity can be issued uponrequest.

Advice on care & maintenance: Fume cabinetsshould be tested, serviced and validated on anannual basis to ensure efficient operation andconformance with safety requirements. Pre-filtersshould be changed every 6-12 months depending onuse of the cupboard. Damaged or insecure seals onfilters can lead to leakage into the workenvironment. The carbon filter lifespan will dependon the types of contaminants it is required to removeand their volume. Carbons give no warning that theyare nearing the end of their life – they simply stopworking. Carbon also has a limited lifespan even ifthe fume cupboard itself is not being used.Laboratory technicians are therefore advised toinclude testing of the carbon filter as part of theirregular testing and validation procedures.
