DESIGN OPTIMISATION4TH YEAR 1ST SEM

OBJECTIVE:

In many industrial design activities, optimization is achieved by comparing chosen design solutions and accepting the best solution. The course deals with a few popular optimization algorithms and demonstrate their working principles. The algorithms and demonstrate their working principles. The algorithms are presented in a step-by-step format so that they can be easily understood. At the end of the course a few case studies are presented for their optimization.

UNIT-I: Introduction

Optimal problem formulation: design variables, constraints, objective function, variable bounds optimization algorithms.

UNIT-II: Single variable optimization algorithms

Optimality criteria; bracketing method such as bounding phase method; region elimination methods such as internal halving and golden section research method.

UNIT-III: Multivariable optimization algorithms

Optimality criteria; unidirectional search method, direct search method such as simplex method; gradient based method such as a Newtons method.

UNIT-IV: Constrained optimization algorithms

Kuhy-Tucker conditions; transformation method such as penalty function method; sensitivity analysis; variable elimination method.

UNIT-V: Specialized algorithms

Integer programming, penality function method, geometric programming

Case studies: optimal design of a truss, ammonia reactor, cans suspension.
