INKY THOUGHTSIt’s hard to believe that here we are on our 3rd issue of Designed To Color! Each time we have an open call, I’m amazed at the level of talent that comes across my inbox and the AMOUNT of submissions we get! It’s so hard trying to find that balance between all the color mediums and making sure we feature enough for everyone to enjoy. I would love to
see more of you submitting in the less common mediums like water coloring and colored pencils! Or even using color in unconventional ways to create stunning backgrounds for your cards like you will see on page 10.
One of my favorite parts of each issue is our Hue’s Who feature! This month we’re talking to Lori Boyd, owner & illlustrator of By LORi Designs. She’s incredibly talented both in her art and coloring and she’s allowed us a little peek into her every day life on page 22. I am absolutely thrilled to have the rest of the year lined up for our Hue’s Who....if you want to see a particular company featured, please email me at [email protected]!
This is our first issue that is completely subscription based, so if you are reading this, THANK YOU for believing in us and starting your subscription with us. We are working very hard to make each issue better than the last, bringing you the latest trends and coloring techniques to inspire you as you craft. Please let your friends know where they can find us (www.designedtocolor.com) to sign up. We are dedicated to bringing you beautiful coloring inspiriation in every single issue.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This page features two different cards using the same image both colored with Copic Markers. I love how you can get a wide range of coloring with the same medium. In the card above, the fish has more detail added with the markers themselves by using the very tip of the brush end to make scales as well as blending different colors together for a more realistic look. In the card to the left, the image is colored in one color but the designer added highlights with a gel pen for added dimension. Both styles produce stunning and unique cards perfect for the special father in your life!

FABER CASTELL AQUAELLE PENCILSSkin- water colorHair- water color, 121, 250Clothes- water color, 139, 141, 147, 153, 162, 168

Let me say, when I first got ahold of the Faber-Castell Aquarelle Pencils I was very intimidated. Shesh man! These pencils are no joke! They have this amazing raised dot grip on the bases of the pencil, which by itself is intimidating, and then just the name Faber-Castell, they mean business. But I have to let you all know, they are so super easy to use and control and I felt very silly for be so afraid of these pencils.
The way the color is so easily saturated is just a dream. For this first time water color pencil lady, it was simply perfection. You get such a smooth transition from colors and shades without taking away from the imperfectness of water coloring. With a rich assortment of 120 colors and the ease of control with the pigment, there is no color variation that you cannot achieve.
The key is to color lightly at first. You can always add more but it’s not so easy to take away color. I like to start where my shading is and then with my Time Holtz Water Brush, I pull the color away and drag it to where I need a lighter color. Another tip is to always let your color dry before adding another color on top. Again remember light before dark. Keep these tips in mind and you are bound to have a fun, watery good time!
If buying tons markers is not your style or might not fit into your budget, the Faber-Castell Aquarelle Pencils might be the medium you are looking for. Each pencil has the ability to create hundreds of shades of the color at hand. For more information on how and where to buy your own set, please visit their website. http://www.faber-castell.us

For basic results, just lightly color the areas where the most color will show through. Use darker colors for your shaded areas. Play around with laying colors on top of each other before you add water. The colors will blend together nicely and give you a fun color effect.
Using a Tim Holtz Water Brush by Ranger, I blended my colors. This brush actually makes blending the colors of the pencils effortless. There is really no way to mess it up. I love using the detail brush. It has a nice tip that will always go back to its original shape if ruffled.

DESIGNED TO COLOR: How long have you been designing digital stamps?
LORI BOYD: I’ve been drawing since I learned to hold a pencil. My Lollipops were rubber stamps in October 2009 at Stamping Bella, my Puddle Jumpers released in rubber in March 2012 at Claudia & Co. and I opened my little digi shop selling all my images, including The Sugar Sticks as digital stamps in the Summer 2010, at By LORi Designs.
DTC: What is the best part of having your own company? & worst?
Lori: We homeschool 5 of our 6 sweet lil’ bugs, being able to stay at home, school them and spend loads of time with them...that is definitely the best part of owning my own company. I feel beyond blessed to have this opportunity and thank God for it all. I guess I would say the worst part is not having time to release images more often.
DTC: Cardmaker or scrapbooker? Lori: I’ve ALWAYS loved my photos, in fact, I believe as a teen I was scrapbooking before I even knew there was a such thing, but it was cardmaking that sparked the start of my blog and later my stamp business. I have recently started, digi scrapping and I love it!
DTC: We just LOVE your cute stamps - where do you draw your inspiration from for a release?
Lori: Thanks Girl!! That makes my heart smile! I definitely draw inspiration from my children and my nieces and nephews.
DTC: Many people know you have 6 kids - tell us the secret to achieving balance in any given day:
Lori: My first thought here was...what is balance??!?! Hee hee! I’m assuming you want a real answer so I will say: Start Each Day with prayer and devotion...then keep the Lord a part of all you do throughout your day.
DTC: I’m going to give you a few words and I want you to tell me the first thing that comes to mind:
Lori: Moonlight - DancingVintage - I love itDivine - HeavenlyIce Cream - the colors Pink, Brown and Cream Butterfly - KissesPolka Dots - So MeMustache - Trending
HUE’S WHO!Each issue we are incredibly honored to spotlight a renowned artist or company in this industry and this time it is Lori Boyd of By LORi Designs. She draws the most adorable digital stamps that she sells online and her talented daughter, Hannah also has her own line of stamps in the store (the apple doesn’t fall far from the talent tree in this family!) I admire all that she does as a homeschooling mother of 6 and entreprenuer. I first got to know her as I was posting random & obscure thoughts on Facebook about the idea of creating this magazine! She reached out to me and actually helped me name the magazine!! I was SO stuck on what to call it and she kept emailing me different ideas and finally I landed on Designed To Color and it just fit perfectly for my vision. I hope you will enjoy reading more about Lori, her stamps and what makes her unique. This is absolutely my favorite part of putting together each magazine - I hope you like it as much as we do.

DTC: If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Lori: I grew up in a military family and lived all over the world, but no doubt the place I would choose over and over again is right here where I am. We are blessed to live in the beautiful state of Kentucky, near both sides of our family with our six beautiful and happy babies...I wouldn’t change a thing!!
DTC: What is your favorite embellishment to use?
Lori: While, I love Ribbon..... my most favorite embellishment = Buttons
DTC: What is your favorite song or band?
Lori: I love all things Elvis Presley. I rather enjoy the tunes of Conway Twitty, Tanya Tucker, Loretta Lynn and Don Williams as well, I’m a old time country girl at heart.
DTC: If you could be a character from any book, who would it be?
Lori: I’d be a cross between: Esther from the Bible (She was Brave), Mary Poppins (She cares for children and loves to sing), Skeeter from The Help (she is strong and tough plus I love the fashion of that time) and Fancy Nancy (she is fun and colorful)
DTC: What is the last book you read?
Lori: The Bible
DTC: Have you heard of the term bucket list? Do you have one and can you share anything on it that you still need to check off or maybe something recently that you were able to check off?
Lori: I don’t have one, but if I did publishing a children’s book would definitely be on it.

sketch itWe love our sketches and hope you enjoy them. Here you will find the sketch and over the next couple of pages the different ways it was creatively interpreted. Flip it, use it as is, add to it. Sketches are a great starting place if you are just starting out or feeling a bit lacking in the creative department! I love seeing all the different ways ONE sketch can turn out.

DESIGNER TIP: When using pop dots to pop up my digital stamp, underneath Gwen’s flower I noticed that if you looked just right, you could see the edge of my white pop dot. I took the main Copic color of the flower and colored around the edge of the pop dot. This helps keep your eye moving and not stopping on the stark white edge from the “almost visible’ pop dot.
