The Master’s Word

Fraternal Greetings from the East,

As we start this month, I want to remind you that we will be discussing the upcoming legislation during

both the business, as well as the family night meetings. I ask you to come and participate in the discussion so that

the three principal officers can ballot based on what the Craft would like, as we represent you during the upcom-

ing Grand Lodge. Unless some get withdrawn there are 19 possible resolutions to be balloted on and range from-

what we call “housekeeping” to some very important items we need to discuss. There is one in particular that will

be discussed during the family night meeting which involves the possibility of raising the Per Capita each year for

the next five years. The hope is to help cover the budget of the Grand Lodge. While the administration of the

Grand Lodge has taken steps to reduce the budget where they have been able to, there is still a shortfall.

Another step to help cut the deficient in the Grand Lodge’s budget is growing the fraternity. As you will

hear during the upcoming year, Deputy Grand Master RW John Westerman III’s motto for the year is “each one -

reach one”. The thought is to think outside the box. Who would you call for advice for legal, financial, medical or

other advice? Do you look them up in the “yellow pages” or “Google”? Do you ask someone? If you trust

someone enough to ask them for their opinion on these important personal issues, ask yourself, would they make

a good Mason (if they are not already)? If they are not bring them down to Lodge. If married, bring the family to

a family night or pancake breakfast.

While growing the Fraternity is important, so we can continue to have Masons, it is equally important, if

not more, to retain our current memberships in the Fraternity. I have asked in the past of what can I and or the of-

ficers of this Lodge do to get you back in our meetings? There is so much competition for your time. I received a

very nice letter from a Brother with some suggestions. I have started one of his ideas with giving the Brothers a

laugh before they go home. It allows you to leave with a smile on your face and hopefully the beginning of want-

ing you to come back for more. I will be discussing the other ideas with the officers and we will put a plan into

place to implement more ideas by family night where it will be announced. We will need some volunteers. No, it

does not take a lot of time, nor do you have to be physically strong. Come hear the announcement or wait until

next month’s Trestleboard to find out. Thank you Brother for your great ideas!

Finally my travel schedule is Thursday May 16th to J.F. Swartsel Lodge, 3109 Lutz Lake Fern Road, Lutz.

Anyone is welcome to meet me there—6:30pm dinner and 7:30 gavel.

Fraternally,

WM:.Dave St. John

From the West

S.W. Richard Vogt

Greetings from the West!

We have had a GREAT month of April. We wit-nessed our own Past Master Stephen Williams present his grandfather his 50 year Masonic Pin and Certificate, we com-pleted more of our exterior renovations for the Lodge, we held a Fellow Craft Degree, we attended the roasting of the District Deputy Grand Masters from the 19th and 20th Masonic Dis-tricts, we attended District School where we learned some good ritual practices, we attended Masters and Wardens, and we participated in the Degree Competition in the Master Ma-son Degree. WOW! What a month. You cannot say that DeSoto is not an active Lodge. The only thing that would make it better is if a lot more of our Brothers joined in on all of these activities. We have approximately 275 Brothers on the roles, yet our attendance averages around 10%, or 25-30 Brothers. We have accomplished all of these things in April, actually year-to-date, with 10% of our Brothers. It boggles my mind to think of what we can accomplish if more of our Broth-ers re-engaged with the Lodge and came out to support all that we do. Come on Brothers, let’s make this happen!

Congratulations go out to Brother Eric Dunn who be-came our newest Fellow Craft. He is anxious to learn his cate-chism and then become a Master Mason. Great kudos go out to Brother Dores McDonnell who has been working tirelessly to teach the catechisms to our new Brothers—EA for Brother Kevin Russo, Master Mason for Bros. Mark Seland and Oscar Patterson. It takes a lot of time and effort to complete this in-struction, it would be nice if we had more Brothers come back and help with catechism and mentoring. There is a wealth of knowledge out there that, quite frankly, is being wasted. Won’t you come and share with your Brothers?

Are you picking up on the theme of my article this month? We all miss our Brothers whom we haven’t seen in quite a while. We are doing a lot of good things, we have been having outstanding meals, and the fellowship is the best it has ever been. We truly enjoy being around each other and we would really like to share that with ALL the Brothers. I hope you will take this plea to heart and come be part of DeSoto again. If you stopped coming for particular reasons, please let us know what those reasons are so we have a chance to fix things. All of the officer’s phone numbers are listed in this Trestleboard—we would love to hear from you. If you are not coming because you need a ride, or you don’t drive at night, or whatever the reason, please call us and we’ll make sure you can get to the Lodge. If you would like to see particular pro-

grams and/or education, please let us know, so we can incor-porate them into our meetings and get-togethers.

Here is what we have coming up in May:

May 1: Catechism Practice

May 4: Quarterly MLT—Modules 5, 8, and 10; To be held at Tampa No. 240

May 7: Stated Meeting

May 8: Catechism Practice

May 15: Catechism Practice

May 16: WM travel to JF Swartzel Lodge

May 18: Scottish Rite Reunion

May 19: Scottish Rite Reunion

May 20: District School of Instruction

May 21: Family Night

May 22: Officer’s Meeting

May 26: Pancake Breakfast

May 26-29: Grand Lodge of Florida

The Lodge will be used by Crestview Academy on May 4th, beginning at 11:00 AM. Plan accordingly. Also, OES will be using the Lodge on May 9th beginning at 6:00 PM for their School of Instruction.

I mentioned earlier that we had a workday on April 6 and got more work on the exterior projects done. We still have more to do, though. I have not planned another work day, but I would ask any Brother that is willing to come down and help with our projects to let me know when they are available and I will let you know what needs to be done and where the sup-plies are. We need to finish the entrance columns; and, the painting—one exterior window and then the pedestals and col-umns in the Lodge room. Let me know if you can help.

We are right on budget for our spending and we are getting the building beautified. It sure would be nice to fill the Lodge room with Brothers. We would love to have our own 100 Mason event just with our own Brothers. Not impossi-ble—just need you to come down. Think about it, and if you need help getting to the Lodge, we are only a phone call away.

Fraternally,

Rick Vogt, SW

From the South

J.W. Peter Loach

Greetings from the South!

On March 24th, we had our normal Pancake Breakfast at DeSoto which was very well attended, serving ap-

proximately 130-150 including many children. The dining room was full of good conversation and happy children’s

laughter filled the Lodge room as Worshipful Williams, Brother Kuriga and his wife had games setup for the kids to

play.

Our April 2nd Stated Meeting was a lightly attended but good with 35 Brothers eating Chili Dog Casserole.

On April 6th we had another Lodge work day to complete several projects. Painting of the Pillars and window

scrolling, Rebuilding of the Pillar bases. All worked hard and had a great time with lots of fellowship.

We had a Degree on April 9th, passing brother Eric Dunn to the degree of Fellow Craft. There were 14 broth-

ers in attendance. We had Mexican Lasagna for dinner.

For Family Night we had about 25 Brothers and family. PJ gave a brief description of what the DeMolay

are, what they are about, and what it has done for and means to him. The meal was a Lasagna Stuffed Meatloaf with

apple and peach cobbler topped with ice cream. I planned for forty, served twenty-five and yet had almost no lefto-

vers.

Our May meals will be:

Shepard’s Pie (leftovers)

Mexican Lasagna (leftovers)

Just like home we have to “clean out the fridge” .

Fraternally,

Peter

P.S. On Jun 18th, there is a Steak & Lobster dinner planned. The ask is for a $15 donation for that meal. Help me

plan by sending me an RSVP for June 18th to [email protected]. If you don’t RSVP, I may not have enough

for you. This is our DDGM visit so let’s make it well attended. And hey, where else can you get a Steak & Lobster

dinner for $15 plus have some great fellowship.

Thought for January

By Bill Bartman

ANGER

We are admonished in the Bible to “Be ye angry and sin not. Let not the sun go down upon your wrath.” (Ephesians 4:26). It reminds me of the little boy who was going to buy his dad a new temper, because his mom said he kept losing it.

Anger is a God-given emotion that each of us has, but it is very important that we keep it under control, especially as Masons. After all, aren’t we good men, striving to improve ourselves? Anger easily can become hatred, resentment, and create a grudge-like feeling within us, and that is very un-healthy. When you get angry, deal with it in a positive way, and then “get over it!” Life is too short to waste it on anger and resentment.

Fraternally,

Bill Bartman
