Mahurangi is the shortened version of the Maori phrase ‘Mahu hu ki te rangi’, which translates to ‘the rock that points to the sky’.

It has been suggested that the name comes from the tribe Ngatirongo, which originally inhabited the land between Auckland and Whangarei.

The Mahurangi district once stretched from Auckland’s North Shore to Te Arai.

Kia ora welcome

The influx of visitors over summer is a timely reminder to Mahurangi locals that we live in an enviable part of Aotearoa. On our doorstep we have more regional parks than the rest of Auckland put together,

not to mention surf breaks, marine reserves, walking and cycling tracks, wineries, galleries and markets.

The history of our area is steeped in tales of exploration, emigration, industry and ingenuity, which are eloquently told at our many local museums. So if the sun gets too hot or lying under a tree with your

favourite book gets too tiring, you know where to head.

Whether you’re a died in the wool local or a visitor from afar, cool your heels, recharge your batteries and use this issue of Destination as a guide to all that this diverse district has to offer. Enjoy!

Puhoi was founded by Captain Martin Krippner, from Staab in Bohemia, now part of the Czech Republic. He encouraged fellow Bohemians to join him and in 1863, 51 adults and 31 children sailed to New Zealand. These hardy pioneering families cleared the forest and probed the swamps with long spikes, digging to retrieve kauri gum, which was a precious commodity in those days. The museum has kept full records of the pioneers’ genealogy and achievements, including the

construction of the beautiful Church of St Peter and St Paul, dating back to 1881. The church is an exact copy of the Littitz Church in Bohemia.

The hotel is a museum in itself, featuring a room full of relics from the pioneering days of the settlement. Bullock harnesses, giant saws and other tools line the walls as a reminder of the days when giant kauri were felled for timber, and you are sure to hear a good tale or two in the famous “Bullshit Corner”.

Maori heritageWhile Pakeha (European) occupation of the area goes back some 170 years, Maori have occupied what they called Puhinui for a millennium.Te Kawerau is the earliest remembered tangata whenua (people of the land) of the Mahurangi river. These people descended from the Ngati Awa and trace their roots back to the ancient peoples of the early canoe Moekakara said to have landed on Goat Island. Their struggle to survive the pressures of competing tribes – the Ngati Whatua from inland, the Nga Puhi from the north and the Ngati Paoa, from the islands of the Gulf – are well documented.Today, Maori culture is evidenced by the impressive carved pou whenua (sacred carved poles) which stand guard over modern holiday homes bordering the beautiful Omaha Bay and at the Te Kiri Marae (gathering place), above Leigh Harbour, named for the chief who ruled the district at the time of European settlement in the 1830s. A great family day out — whatever the weather

Tucked behind the bush in Kowhai Park, at the notorious Hill Street/State Highway 1 intersection, are the relics of Warkworth’s first industry. The five abandoned lime kilns and ovens were built in the 1880s. The lime quarried at the site was burned and then loaded onto horse drawn drays or trucks, pulled along a light tram track through to Warkworth and shipped to the main cement works further down the river. There is a walking track that leads to the top of the kilns which provides a view of the workings. A

sign at the site says that the kilns serve as a monument to New Zealand’s first chemical industry of which the lime-burners of the Mahurangi were an important part.

The kilns can be approached easily from the footbridge at the end of the car park. The track follows the ridgeline where there are some good stands of kauri and totara, before descending down to the Mill Stream which it follows back to the car park – about a 30 minute walk.

If the weather is fine and you feel like stretching your legs, then fortify yourself with a coffee and scone at one of the town cafes, and head for the river. A good place to start is at the corner of Elizabeth and Queen Streets, where you’ll see The Bridgehouse Lodge, which dates back to 1854. There has been a hotel operating on that site for more than 130 years. The pathway goes under the bridge and then runs along the riverfront, behind the retail centre, to Lucy Moore Park. Keep an eye out for the Birds of the Mahurangi art installations – a series of native bird silhouettes made of corten steel.

The river is also home to the restored scow Jane Gifford, which is normally

berthed at Warkworth Wharf, and the little steamboat Kapanui. Public sailings on “the Jane” are run throughout the summer and schedules are available at the i-SITE.

There are plans to eventually extend the river walkway to the ruins of the Wilson Cement Works, which in 1903 employed 180 men and was exporting 20,320 tonnes a year. The works closed in 1928 when the plant was moved to Whangarei, but despite its derelict state, the structure is still impressive with walls 228mm thick, 12m high and 18.3m in length. The flooded quarry alongside the building is a popular swimming hole – a great place to cool off on a hot day.

filling the larderWith the range and variety of fruit and vegetables available at markets and roadside stalls, preparing summer meals is a delight. Here’s a recipe from Lauraine Jacobs, the NZ Listener weekly food columnist and regular visitor to the Matakana coast. She describes it as an easy quick dinner that just sings summer!

“The flavours are very dependent on choosing ripe flavoursome tomatoes, and the heat of the pasta provides a nice contrast to the room temperature tomatoes.”

Spaghetti with fresh tomato & anchovy sauce Serves 4

300g spaghetti 4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 2 tbsp sherry vinegar Small tin anchovies 1 clove garlic, peeled ½ tsp sea salt 500g mixed tomatoes of various colours and sizes 1 large handful basil leaves 2 tbsp grated parmesan

Bring a large pot of water to the boil, add plenty of salt, bring back to the boil and add the spaghetti. Cook according to the instructions on the packet until al dente. Drain well, tossing an extra tablespoon of oil through the spaghetti to ensure it does not stick together.

While the pasta is cooking prepare the sauce. Pour the olive oil and vinegar into large serving bowl. Mash the anchovies, garlic and salt to a paste with a mortar and pestle or squash it altogether using a flat bladed knife and add to the

bowl, mixing well.

Roughly chop the larger tomatoes and slice the smaller cherry tomatoes in half. Add the tomatoes and basil to the sauce in the bowl.

When the pasta is cooked and drained, add this on top of the tomatoes, tossing everything together gently. Scatter the grated parmesan over and add extra seasoning to taste.

Serve immediately.

Wine match: A fruity Matakana pinot gris.

The Mahurangi East Peninsula forms the northern arm of the Mahurangi River and includes the settlements of Snells Beach, Sandspit, Algies Bay, Martins Bay and Scotts Landing. There are several vantage points along the peninsula that give spectacular views of Kawau Bay and nearby islands. Scandrett Regional Park, named after the Scandrett family that farmed on the land for more than 130 years, is well worth a visit.

Sandspit is the stepping off point for Kawau Island, which covers more than 2000 hectares, mostly privately owned.

The Department of Conservation administers about 10 per cent of the island including Mansion House, the stately home of one of New Zealand’s early governors Sir George Grey. Originally used for sheep farming, the discovery of manganese and copper lead to a mining boom around the mid-1800s. The remains of the mine’s brick pump house chimney and a tunnel can be explored near Bon Accord Harbour. Access to the island is by private boat or water taxi. Kawau Bay is a renowned fishing and sailing paradise, with many sheltered anchorages.

The Mahurangi Peninsula was the setting for the 2001 New Zealand

film Rain. More recently, Sandspit Campground was used for a TV series

trailer called The Wilde Bunch.

While the outdoors is undoubtedly a huge attraction for many visitors to the area, there are also a number of fine contemporary art galleries to visit. One of the more established of these is Art Matakana, located in the spacious red sheds of the Matakana Country Park. The gallery features nationally known artists, contemporary art, sculpture, prints, glass and jewellery. The Vivian, in Omaha Valley Road, is one of the area’s newest galleries. It provides a venue for local professional artists to exhibit both indoor and outdoor works across a variety of mediums, from painting and photography to video and installation work.

There are also many home-based artists who welcome visitors to their studios – just look for their signs on roadsides. A permanent art trail involving more than 20 artists has been established at Mangawhai, which the organisers hope will see the town recognised as more than just a place to surf, swim and play golf. A brochure on the trail is available from the information kiosk on Molesworth Drive.

Keep an eye out for the two summer-only exhibitions – mARTakana, which is raising money for the Warkworth Wellsford Hospice and the Great Summer Exhibition, which is funding improvements at the Mahurangi Tennis Club.

New Zealand’s natural beauty, its raw volcanic presence and its volatile history provide an endless pool of inspiration for fine contemporary artist Shane Dudley’s work. “In every work of mine, there are always two key influences – the Pakeha and the Maori,” he says. His large-scale works are crafted from cement and coloured oxides, which create a richly textured finish that mimics stone. His work is held in private collections all over the world and during December, he will exhibit at Art Matakana.

When it comes to oysters, nothing beats eating them straight from the sea. Mahurangi Oysters has taken this notion to its logical conclusion, starting what is believed to be New Zealand’s first oyster tour. And you’d be hard pressed to find a better location for an oyster cruise than on the picturesque Mahurangi Harbour.

Oysters owners Lisa and Andrew Hay say they wanted to be able to bring the people to the oysters, rather than the other way around. “We want visitors to experience this

amazing setting while trying the freshest seafood possible,” they say.

On the tour, people are able to soak up the views as Lisa explains how the oysters are farmed, while Andrew leaps waste-deep into the water to collect a basket full of oysters.

That’s when the shucking lessons begin and an hour or so can drift away, shucking oysters at your leisure, floating along the river. And, of course, the ferry also has local wines specially chosen for the full oyster experience.

• There are 100 hectares of Pacific oyster farms in the Mahurangi Harbour.

• Mahurangi Oysters’ eight-hectare farm produces about 600,000 oysters a year, with half sold domestically and the balance sold to nations on the Pacific Rim.

• An oyster takes about 18 months to reach harvest size and filters an average of 18 litres of water every hour to feed on algae in the sea.

• All Mahurangi Oysters come from wild spawn which floats through the water.

• Oysters take on different qualities throughout the seasons. In winter they are crisp, meaty and plump; in spring they are fat and creamy; while in summer they shrink in size but are still good to eat.

MangawhaiIf you have a reasonable level of fitness, then Mangawhai’s coastal walk is a ‘must do’. It takes about three hours to complete the full five-kilometre track and you have to ensure that you time your walk so that you do the return beach section at low tide. The tourist information office, on Molesworth Drive, has more detailed information. You will be amply rewarded for your efforts with unparalleled views of Bream Head and numerous offshore islands. One of the more interesting features is a natural formation called ‘the giant staircase’, a natural amphitheatre just below the track carved from the hillside.

Tamahunga, MatakanaThe Tamahunga Trappers, a group of enthusiastic locals, has been involved with pest eradication on the mountain for a number of years. They are helping the native forest regenerate by targeting mainly mustelids such as weasels and stoats, as well as rats, cats and possums. This also makes the bush a safer haven for birds such as Cook’s petrels, bellbirds, kaka and kakariki. The walk is accessed off Omaha Valley Road, about a kilometre from the Leigh Road intersection. It’s a reasonably steep climb to the summit (437m), but provides spectacular views of Omaha Bay. From there you can retrace your steps (the round trip takes about three

hours) or continue northwards to Rodney Road and Pakiri, providing you have made arrangements for someone to pick you up at the other end.

PuhoiA new walking track has opened in the Puhoi hills forming the latest addition of the national Te Araroa walkway. The 3.8km track starts at a swing bridge across the Puhoi River and continues through pine forest and regenerating native forest to join an existing track to the village. The walk is accessible to most walkers with easy inclines and takes about two hours. From Puhoi, the Te Araroa trail continues north over Moirs Hill through farmland to the Dome Valley and Mt Tamahunga. Heading south, the track involves a kayak leg down the Puhoi River to Wenderholm, then down the coast at low tide to Orewa. Locals hope to eventually build a walking track along the Puhoi River to Wenderholm. The Te Araroa walkway stretches 3000km, from Cape Reinga to Bluff, and takes about four or five months to complete.

New Zealand’s main satellite communications ground station is located 5km south of Warkworth. Built in the early 1970s, it put an end to delayed telecasts, allowing television viewers to watch international rugby matches ‘live’ rather than having to wait for the footage to be flown in.

The site chosen had to be sheltered from high winds, free from microwave frequency electrical noises and the ground had to be strong enough to support the vast 2300-tonne weight of the 30-metre wide satellite dish with its massive

reinforced concrete pedestal.

The station is a popular venue for school trips and features hands-on exhibits explaining how satellite communications work. Visitors can also view the station in operation from inside the public observation gallery.

The station was originally owned by the NZ Post Office, but is currently owned by Telecom NZ. Warkworth One was dismantled in 2008, and more recently the other big dish has been leased to Auckland University of Technology for conversion into a radio telescope.

The story of the NZ kauri is the story of Northland and there is no better place to get an appreciation of this than at the award winning Kauri Museum, in Matakohe, about 45 minutes drive north of Warkworth on the road to Dargaville. The museum boasts many “world’s best and biggest” including the largest kauri slab measuring 22.5 metres long and the largest display of kauri gum. Many buildings inside the museum are life-sized such as examples of pioneer homes, Matakohe’s first school building and the Matakohe Church. The brooding presence of Hauturu-o-Toi (Little Barrier Island) dominates the view as you enter Leigh. Situated 22 kilometres off Cape Rodney, its name means resting place of the winds. Mt Hauturu, at 722-metres, is the highest mountain in the region. The island is NZ’s oldest nature reserve and is one of the few forested areas in NZ that have been relatively undisturbed by introduced browsing mammals. Hauturu is home to more than 400 native plant species including many that are now seldom seen on the mainland. The island’s fauna has slowly started to re-establish since the final removal of feral cats in 1980 and kiore (rats) in 2004. Threatened species living on the island include wetapunga (giant weta) and hihi (stitchbird). Hauturu is off-limits to the general public and landing on the island is strictly forbidden. However, the annual Warkworth Walking Weekend, which happens in November, features a trip to the island, which is always sold out well in advance.

On other days, start with a leisurely breakfast at one of the many coffee shops, pick up some supplies for lunch, as well as water, snacks and sunscreen, and take the Leigh Road to NZ’s oldest marine reserve – Cape Rodney-Okakari Pt Marine Reserve, more commonly known as Goat Island. To really appreciate the wonders of this 518-hectare marine sanctuary, grab some snorkelling gear if you can. For landlubbers, the education centre at the Leigh Marine Laboratory is a must. You have a couple of options for lunch – there are picnic tables at Goat Island or back track to Mathesons Bay, where there are toilets, a children’s playground and a scenic bush walk.

After lunch, and a snooze under a shady pohutakawa tree if you’re lucky, one option on your return trip is a stopover at the Ti Point Reptile Park. Here you’ll find an amazing collection of native and exotic animals. Some walking is involved but it’s a great place for kids to see an array of unusual creatures. If you have time, and the kids still have energy to burn, there is a pleasant coastal walk at the end of Ti Point Road. The walk starts by the wharf and provides views over Omaha Bay. From here, the drive back to Matakana is about 15 minutes.

Minniesdale Chapel, on Shegadeen Road, west of Wellsford, probably doesn’t look much different today than it did when it was built nearly 150 years ago. Albertlander Reverend Edwin Stanley Brookes commissioned the building and it was opened and dedicated by him on Sunday, 29 December 1867. It was built on sloping ground which allowed for a room to be placed underneath it. A Gothic door leads to this room where, on 7 August 1868, after several preliminary meetings, the first Highway Board for the district was elected. A commemorative service is held every year on the nearest Sunday to the opening and people come from all over New Zealand and overseas to attend. The chapel has an Historic Places Category 1 listing.

Logues Bush, east of Wellsford on Day Road, comprises two tracks which wend their way through regenerating native kauri forest. The bush was bought from the Logue family in 1983 with contributions from the Queen Elizabeth II Trust, Department of Lands and Survey, Rodney District Council and the Forest and Bird Society. Native trees in the reserve include totara, kauri and kahikatea trees that escaped logging. The 2km main loop takes about an hour-and-a-half.

The freshwater lakes of Tomarata are a great family destination for

picnics, swimming and water-skiing. Just south of the town is the 4.3km Dome Valley Walkway, which takes about two

hours to complete.

Mangawhai • Kaiwakamuseum countdownThe doors will open on Mangawhai’s impressive new museum, in Molesworth Drive, this summer. The project has fired the imagination of the Mangawhai community for almost five years and has drawn inspiration from the Mangawhai Harbour. The theme ties together Maori and European history, and today’s holidaymakers and residents with the experiences of the pioneers.

Through a series of exhibits, visitors will be able to learn the story of the mighty battle fought between Ngapuhi and Ngati Whatua in the valley below Mt Pukekororo, near Kaiwaka, watch a video describing the distinctive coastal rock formations in the area, and revisit the sinking of the RMS

Niagara, by a German raider, in 1940. A life-sized replica of the shed that once stood at the end of the Mangawhai Wharf provides a venue to tell the story of Mangawhai’s shipbuilding, kauri gum and logging industries, local shipwrecks and the building of the breakwater.

Family histories, colourful characters such as the pilot Captain Ladd, and information about the areas flora and fauna, are captured in words and photographs, and there’s a special place for the distinctive tramcar baches. As well as exhibition space, the museum will have a shop and café, and a public research and genealogy room.

Kaiwaka is known as the Little Town of Lights

and is a mix of old and new. Visitors may be surprised

at what they’ll discover on a wander around the township. The Kaiwaka Cheese Shop,

for instance, offers more than 52 different cheeses.
