Two Projects: One School

Iona Preparatory unveiled renovation plans for both campuses

at its annual President’s Dinner on Nov. 20, 2015. The vision for the

Lower School includes a reimagined Library & Technology Center,

buzzing with positive energy and electrified by its new and varied

uses. From the Storytelling Room where reader’s theater brings

literature to life, or a Makerspace Room brimming with robotics

equipment, to collaborative learning furniture accented by Chrome-

books or a serene reading corner, the renovation of our Lower

School Library has unlimited potential.

The addition of bleachers to the Wellington T. Mara Field at the

Upper School will allow for a second seating area along Wilmot

Road to complement the cherished hill adjacent to the school.

Similarly, a new press box will provide a perch for our coordinators

to view the entire field, our videographers to film games and, as

its name suggests, our local reporters to write about the Maroon

& Gold.

We hope you will help continue the legacy of academic excel-

lence and athletic prowess at Iona Preparatory School with your

support of these Two Projects for our One School.

My Dear Benefactors and Members of the Iona Preparatory K-12 Community,

accompany four pairs of Iona Prep fathers

and sons on a service immersion trip to

Lima, Peru. There I witnessed our parents

and students having a hand in furthering

Iona Prep’s mission to proclaim our Cath-

olic faith and stand in solidarity with those

marginalized by poverty and injustice. Our

service trips for 2016-2017 are already filling up, and we continue

offering 75 weekly service opportunities throughout the year.

Our eighth grade presently has a waiting list, and our kinder-

garten is chock full of young Gaels. I believe this is a testament not

only to the quality education we provide, but the desire of parents

to educate their sons in a place that understands boys and helps

them grow to know who God calls each of them to be.

As I’ve said many times and will continue to say, God has called

us to bring about His kingdom in the here and now. We do that by

putting our young Iona men on the path to sainthood.

Whether you’ve swung a golf club at one of our outings, spon-

sored a table at a gala, underwritten a project or written a check to

the Fund for Iona Prep, you have helped build the path that leads

our young men to greatness.

Since I began with a motto, let me also end with one: “Facere

et docere,” or “To do and to teach,” the motto and mission of the

Christian Brothers who first founded Iona Prep almost a century

ago. I want to sincerely thank you for doing—gifting, praying and

volunteering—so that the Brothers and I, and all our laypeople

inspired by the charism of Blessed Edmund Rice, can continue to

educate your sons in mind, heart, soul and body.

Live Jesus in our hearts, FOREVER!

God bless you,

Bro. Thomas R. Leto, CFC, President

As we approach a century of molding young men into the

leaders of tomorrow, I am often reminded of our historical motto

and theme for the current school year: Estote Firmi. Be Strong.

It is a simple admonition, yet it represents everything we stand

for and, in two words, sums up our previous 98 years. Thanks to the

names contained in this Destinations donor report, along with all

those who have contributed their time, talent and treasure over the

course of the past year, Iona Prep continues to “Be Strong.”

We have certainly been strong academically, with the Class of

2015 earning more than $23 million in academic scholarships. Even

more impressive, 76 percent of our graduates earned academic

scholarships, while the national average is less than 45 percent.

We also have an excellent 66 percent Advanced Placement (AP)

passing rate, which is all the more amazing considering every

student enrolled in an AP course takes the corresponding exam.

The national average is a 57 percent passing rate, and that excludes

students opting out of the year-end exams.

Athletically, we brought home five titles last year, including the

New York State Catholic Lacrosse Championship, Westchester County

Track & Field Championship, New York Archdiocesan Basketball Cham-

pionship, and CYO State Baseball and Basketball Championships.

We also had two Con Edison Athletes of the Week in Matthew Fay

US’15 and Ryan Herrera-Murphy US’15, who finished as the fourth and

first-ranked outdoor vaulters in the state, respectively. Senior Andrew

Cannistraci recently added his name to the list of Con Ed winners,

became a state champion shot putter and was recently named one

of two Westchester-Putnam Boys Indoor Track and Field Athletes of

the Year by The Journal News. Sixteen Gaels signed National Letters

of Intent (NLIs) in 2014-2015, and a new record 31 graduates are

currently competing at the collegiate level. We saw 11 more of our

student-athletes commit in the fall, with seven signing NLIs.

Most importantly, we continue to provide leadership and service

opportunities for our Gaels. This past summer, I was privileged to

Iona Prep dedicates field to Wellington T. Mara P’72,’75,’76,’78

BY ALEX MALECKI

“It is an honor to dedicate this field to Mr. Mara, a man who

believed in working hard, giving back and being strong—traits that

we hold dear,” President Brother Thomas Leto said.  “On behalf

of Iona Prep, I would like to thank the Mara Family for not only

supporting our mission, but for being living examples of it.”

Lynn and Frank LS’74, US’78 Mara P’07,’09,’14,’17, provided the

leadership gift that allowed for the renovation of the track and field

during the summer of 2014. Highlights of that project included new

surfacing for the track and a synthetic turf for the field that is home

to the Upper School’s football, lacrosse and soccer programs, as

well as physical education classes. Representatives from every

Gaels team that utilizes the turf joined the Mara family at center

field, with the captains providing tokens of the school’s apprecia-

tion: bouquets of flowers to the ladies and pieces of the turf to the

Mara men.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better namesake for our field,”

football captain Christian McHugh US’16 told the crowd, speaking

of the deep sense of pride that comes with putting on the Maroon

& Gold uniform. “That pride doubles today, knowing that we will be

Speaking before the hundreds of fans, alumni, parents and students

gathered to start the Homecoming football game against Cardinal

Hayes, New York Giants Pro Scout Timothy McDonnell US’01 recalled

how playing in front of his “Pop-Pop” always made him give that little

something more.

“Iona Prep, the Christian Brothers and Iona Prep athletics

always held a special place in my grandparents’ life,” Mr. McDonnell

said. “I had such a strong sense of pride and encouragement when

I saw him here; it made me want to focus even more and do some-

thing in the game that would catch the old scout’s eye.”

With more than 30 members of the Mara family on hand for

the pregame ceremony on Sept. 26, Iona Preparatory School

K-12 did that little something to hopefully catch the longtime Prep

father, grandfather and faithful supporter’s eye on a sunny Saturday

afternoon. While most of the Mara family agreed that their beloved

patriarch would have shied away from the attention, it was only

fitting that the school would dedicate the field it renovated in 2014

to Wellington T. Mara P’72,’75,’76,’78, the face of a legacy family

that has embraced the Iona Prep mission.

Future plans for the Wellington T. Mara Field include a formal

press box and bleachers. Plans for those two additions were

unveiled at the Nov. 20, 2015 President’s Dinner at Glen Island

Harbour Club in New Rochelle, N.Y.

Following the ceremony, John Mara US’72 said the school has

always meant a lot to his family. The Giants president and CEO was

one of 10 Mara children and grandchildren to attend the Prep, and

enjoyed the carnival-esque atmosphere of Homecoming with his

own grandchildren well into the afternoon.

“I don’t think my father would have liked the attention…he

would had stayed under the tree back there,” John Mara said. “But

it’s a nice honor for the family, and we’re very appreciative that Iona

Prep would do this.”

And somewhere in Paradise, an old scout smiled over the game

that has meant so much to his family through the years, bringing

them together once again to cheer on the Maroon & Gold.

playing on a field named after a man who was truly a Giant.”

Mr. Mara could often be found standing atop the hill on a

Saturday afternoon with his good friend, Michael Ward US’51,

P’78,’79,’81, watching the games from beneath the shade of the pine

tree. Today, a memorial bench commemorates their friendship and

fondness for Iona Prep football. Additionally, a stone now stands

along the pathway down to Wellington T. Mara Field, featuring an

engraved plaque commemorating the Sept. 26 dedication with the

title, “Once a Gael, always a Gael.”

Starting out as a ball boy for the team, Mr. Mara spent his entire

adult life with the family-owned New York Giants and was widely

regarded as one of the National Football League’s most influential

owners. Rising to become one of the game’s most prominent and

respected figures, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of

Fame in 1997. Under Mr. Mara’s direction, the New York Football

Giants won six NFL titles (including two Super Bowl wins), nine

conference championships (including six Eastern Conference cham-

pionships in the days before the NFL-AFL merger, and three NFC

EXPENSES

As we approach our 100th year of excellence, Iona Preparatory School remains as committed to educating the young men of our time, K-12, as we did at our founding in 1916. Our benefactors have been equally constant, generating more than $3.5 million in generosity. For the sixth year in a row, Iona Prep saw its contributions account for an increased portion of total revenue.

With preparations underway for the Lower and Upper School Centennial Celebration in 2016-2017, Iona Prep’s benefactors continued their strong support in the school’s 98th year. The total number of supporters grew by more than 11 percent last year, and participation increased in all but one of the following nine levels of giving. More funds were raised online than ever before, due in part to the success of a new #GivingTuesday campaign and an online giving day that kicks off the final month of the Fund for Iona Prep. With your support, we look forward to announcing that 2015-2016 was even better!

Class Acts

An ever-increasing number of alumni

gave during our 2014-2015 fiscal year,

and for that we are immensely grateful.

In fact, alumni donors accounted for a

third of the overall philanthropy to Iona

Prep. Moreover, alumni contributions

increased by 11.5 percent, and

participation continued its steady rise,

growing by half a percent. A Gael head

indicates our top five class participation

rates (note that the Class of 2015

percentage includes last year’s

Senior Gift).

keep Iona Prep’s students on the cutting edge. A visit in April of last

year saw the arrival of new cameras, a teleprompter and additional

monitors for green-screen work. The foundation also outfitted the

studio with iMacs for video editing, as well as a drone camera for

aerial videography. The new equipment has taken broadcasting at

Iona Prep to new heights…literally.

While the origins of the foundation can be traced back to that

night outside Parisian Cleaners in the Bronx when the DiGioia

family tragically lost a patriarch, its future rests—as do all things—

with future generations.

A 2007 graduate of Seton Hall, Joseph DiGioia is the produc-

tion supervisor at the Fort Group and will be conducting training

sessions on “best practices” in video production. Alexandra, a 2009

University of Rhode Island graduate and current account executive

with the CBS Corporation, along with, Gregory, a valuation trainee

at Cushman & Wakefield, already assist their father with foundation

work. Their brother, Salvatore, will be doing the same following his

2018 graduation from the University of Michigan.

The future for Street of Dreams will include sponsored schol-

arships to the School of Communication, Media and the Arts (CMA)

at Oswego, as well as additional equipment grants to metropolitan

schools. It also looks to host its first event sometime this spring,

with CMA Dean Fritz Messier—who was a graduate assistant when

Mr. DiGioia was a student—as its inaugural honoree.

Thanks to the Street of Dreams, new worlds continue to open

up at Iona Preparatory School. So, too, does a night that ended

in personal loss continue to provide a public gain for those with a

passion for the media arts.

“Every street is full of dreams,” Mr. DiGioia said, “that are just

looking for an opportunity.”Photo by

Good Catholics typically learn to be philanthropic by practicing giv-

ing at an early age. We learn by example, watching those we love be

generous with their time, talent and treasure. Sometimes, though,

giving begins when something is taken. Something precious. Some-

thing irreplaceable.

Mr. Frank DiGioia P’11,’14 was a senior at All Hallows High

School in the Bronx when his father was killed during a robbery on

the very street he had worked for 15 years. Much more than money

was stolen from his family that day. But something miraculously

was given, too . . .

“If it weren’t for All Hallows, the Irish Christian Brothers, and

my Italian mother and family, my life could have turned out quite

different,” Mr. DiGioia told those gathered at his Oct. 24, 2014, All

Hallows High School Hall of Fame induction. “It was the All Hallows

experience that prepared me with an education guided with faith

and values, to forge a life and career in a whole new world.”

That new world would become a multimedia one. At the State

University of New York at Oswego, Mr. DiGioia studied communi-

cations with a concentration in broadcasting. His first jobs were in

radio and television sales and management.

Fast forward some 30 years and Mr. DiGioia is head of his own

marketing and production company, The FORT Group, Inc., having

paid his dues at news network affiliates throughout the Northeast.

But beyond current projects and keeping up with the technology

curve, what keeps DiGioia driven is the desire to create similar

opportunities for today’s students, exposing them to the rapid-

ly-changing world of multimedia content creation.

Mr. DiGioia’s dreams could have ended on the street that sad

night of his senior year. Instead, he and his wife, Joanne, sons

Gregory US’11 and Salvatore US’14, as well as their older children,

Joseph and Alexandra, are helping build the Street of Dreams

Foundation, an emerging charity dedicated to providing multimedia

learning opportunities and scholarships to students in the tristate

area.

The Street of Dreams helps bring multimedia and production

support into metropolitan schools. Iona Preparatory Upper School

was fortunate to be the inaugural recipient institution. With that, the

DiGioia Family Studio within the Paul Verni Fine Arts Center was born.

The initial gift from Street of Dreams included Panasonic

production equipment such as camcorders, mixing boards,

microphones and monitors. The result was an all-inclusive, high

definition production studio that opened in the summer of 2013.

The Street of Dreams has continued to donate new equipment to

instance of consecutive giving that we have on record. Amazingly,

he wasn’t alone, as 94 benefactors have been giving for a decade

or more.

The total number of consecutive givers came in at 1,193, an

awesome display of commitment to Iona Preparatory School and

the ideals taught and lived by the Christian Brothers. With a great

deal of gratitude, we are pleased to present the following names of

consecutive givers of 10 years or more.

Last year’s installment of Destinations featured a profile on the

conscious commitment of Mr. Carl Pernicone LS’72, US’76 to his

charitable contributions. He literally writes checks to

his philanthropic priorities every Saturday, according

to a schedule he creates annually.

This past year, we took a closer look at the

numbers and Mr. Pernicone is one of only 13 Gaels to

have given for 28 straight years, which is the longest

for tax purposes, and use multiple

credit cards.

Join us in making our 99th year the best yet! Here are 4 easy ways you can make a tax-

deductible gift that has an immediate impact on the lives of our Gaels:
