Here’s the thing... High school has changed. And so has the entire landscape of college and careers, for that matter. Which is why today’s high school students are no longer stuck with one career for the rest of their lives. They seek out learning experiences to help them decide what’s next and pivot in and out of careers to maximize their income potential and happiness.

FRESHMAN ACADEMY The student experience is at the core of the Freshman Academies at Desert View and Sunnyside High School. Rigorous interdisciplinary programs, small learning communities, and specialized knowledge are just some of the benefits of the Freshman Academy model.

Students enter high school into the Freshman Academy which is structured to provide them with additional support as they make the transition to high school. In addition, students explore their options as they make a career exploration decision and select a College and Career Academy by the end of the freshman year.

Each Academy is designed to be broad enough to appeal to students interested in exploring a variety of pathways. Some students will find their passion and enter into an Early College Pathway, which allows them to earn an entire first year of credits in certain pathways, while others may explore a variety of career options as they work to develop a plan not just of graduation, but for what they will do after they graduate as well.

In addition to creating a seamless transition from middle school to high school, the Freshman Academy is a learning community where:

Freshmen have spaces to take academy classes with only other freshmen

Teachers work together to deliver a more personalized level of communication with parents and students

Teachers plan together and co-create interdisciplinary units for students

THE HIGH SCHOOL EXPERIENCE

REDESIGNED PROFILE OF A GRADUATE

THE GRADUATE PROFILE IS THE ROADMAP THAT DEFINES THE SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES WE EXPECT OF

OUR HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES ONCE THEY COMPLETE THEIR STUDIES AND

CONTINUE AS LIFELONG LEARNERS.

Sunnyside’s Graduate Profile provides an unparalleled level of clarity that aligns our mission, vision, and the work. This

new iteration of our graduate profile picks up where our Strategic Plan left off in 2015 and drives the work forward

through five competencies, key to each student’s journey towards graduation:

Knowledge for Learning: Our students are knowledge creators. We look to them to not only master the content, but

also to transfer knowledge across disciplines: From science to the humanities, from mathematics to the social sciences—

Sunnyside students are deep thinkers and well-rounded learners with a strong sense of academic identity.

Knowledge for Impact: Our students are engaged participants in their future, not merely bystanders. Equipped with deep knowledge

of history and a sense of what is fair, our students are adept at using social media and student organizations to drive change. Sunnyside

students are aware of community issues and possess real-world knowledge gained from internships and other experiences that put

global issues into a local context.

Creative Confidence: Sunnyside students take part in human-centric experiences that use empathy, systems thinking, and design thinking

to unlock their creativity. Through building prototypes, using causal loops, challenging assumptions, and acknowledging that all ideas

are worthy, our students learn how to take risks. More importantly, creative confidence relies on human collaboration, which is embodied in

the performing arts. Sunnyside’s tradition of excellence in the fine arts provides a first point of entry for students into a world of creativity that

gives them opportunities to gain confidence and succeed.

Critical Consciousness: Because workplaces, schools and colleges, and other social environments are defined by internal cultures and norms that

are not always visible from the outside, we give students the tools to identify systems that perpetuate inequality so they’re prepared to take action.

Self and Social Awareness: Students who are self-aware have strong intrapersonal skills such as self-regulation, which develops in the early years

and aids in problem solving and supports volitional behavior. Social awareness (or social intelligence) is part of an important skill set that, later in life, is what

sets a transformational leader apart from an everyday boss.

Cadets must comply with Air Force grooming standards which outlines the maximum length and appearance of hair and will be required to wear the Air Force uniform all day once a week, a significant component of their overall grade. Additionally, cadets have opportunities for after school clubs (examples: Drill Team, Color Guard, Kitty Hawk, Raiders), community service projects, parades and leadership camps.

Upon completion of AFJROTC academic requirements, two types of certificates may be awarded: A Certificate of Completion is awarded for successful completion of three or four years. A Certificate of Training is awarded for successful completion of two years. All branches of the service recognize the AFJROTC three year certificate for increased rank when enlisting and some recognize the two year certificate. Students who complete three years of AFJROTC, and then go on to ROTC at the college level, may receive credit for and be excused from the first year of the ROTC four-year college program.
