Spring has sprung, with this beautiful golf weather amongst us and the Clubhouse bustling, I have had the opportunity to meet many of our great Sunnyside members.

First, I’d like to say thank you for your support and patience as we transition. If we haven’t met yet, please stop by and say hello, I look forward to visiting with each of you.

In a few short weeks, I can attest that Sunnyside absolutely is “the friendliest Club in the valley.” It is such a privilege to operate in the newly renovated Clubhouse. The facility truly shines when it is filled with members, their families, and guests. Easter Brunch was a great way to showcase all the hard work that went into designing an inviting and comfortable space for our growing membership to enjoy.

I really appreciate learning about Sunnyside’s rich and storied history. I am excited to keep those traditions strong as well as explore new ways to make memories. I invite you to share your favorite experiences from years past as we are working to fill the Member events calendar.

I hope to see you at your Club for the upcoming Prime Rib Dinner, Mother’s Day Brunch, and Memorial Day Cookout Poolside with Family Fun! Please call the Clubhouse to make your reservations. See you there!

course. As the group develops, a friendly competitive game could be offered as an option but not required. Enjoying a fun golf outing is the goal.

Staying for lunch immediately after play is encouraged for those who can, enabling members to rehash the round, get to know one another or simply catch up with other members.

Still in its infancy, Jackie Ward sees a bright future for the 9-hole group. “I do think it will grow,” she says. “This is nothing formal and we have found quite a few want to play just nine holes. I see it as a good tune-up for established players who will apply it to their 18-hole play on

Thursdays, as well as those just wanting to get involved.”

An email list has been developed to keep those interested in the loop and Jackie would welcome hearing from others who would like to be included.

The winds of change are gently blowing over the Sunnyside women’s golf landscape, a ripple effect that offers a shortened game for those seeking it and an entry level for others interested in meeting new friends and getting involved.

An informal 9-hole group is forming for play on Tuesday mornings, spearheaded by Jackie Ward and Sara Donovan. Deliberately unstructured to encourage all levels of play, the group meets at 10 a.m. at the Pro Shop where pairings can be assigned or players can arrange games with players in advance. Showing up is all that is required, although a call to Jackie (559-288-7869) or Sara (559-779-0242) to say you are coming helps in knowing how many to expect, it is not required.

Sunnyside has not had an organized 9-hole group in many years but recent conversations indicate a strong interest by both veteran 18-hole players and those wanting to start playing or simply pare down time on the

BRUSH UP ON RULESAn informal rules seminar was presented to all interested women in April, conducted by Rosie Hayashi, a certified rules official of the Women’s Golf Association of Northern California and member of Copper River Golf Club.

The informal dinner seminar focused on “20 Must Know Rules of Golf Changes for 2019,” and included a supplemental video presentation, a new rules book for easy storage in a golf bag and related articles to common rulings. LPGA golf instructor Joella Pannicia also attended.

Laurie Plescia and Lenny Silva won The Patterson Tournament April 17 on the

19th hole against Stephanie Botsford and Judy Errecart.

A raffle of various gifts submitted by members also was offered, with proceeds to be given to the Sunnyside Girls Golf Team. The Sunnyside Women’s Golf Board supports the high school each year with donations to assist players with golf equipment and attire.

A limited number of 2019 rules booklets are available in the ladies locker room for those wishing to have one.

May has arrived at Sunnyside Country Club and it’s a very exciting time at our club. The clubhouse renovation is complete, our

new clubhouse manager Jason Zeller has hit the ground running, and our golf course is peaking.

We want to remind everyone that we are open for business and looking for the next great members at Sunnyside. Both full golf members and social members. We are currently at 269 golf members and 352 total members. We are less than 50 members away of hitting our membership goals which remain 300 Golf Members and 400 Total Members. The club has worked hard to make our facilities and golf course the best private club experience in Fresno. Wednesday Night Dining has added some great items to the menu and we recently hosted a visit by the USGA for an Agronomy Study of our golf course conditions. As you can see, we are constantly looking to make Sunnyside better. Now is the time introduce your family and friends to our great club. We are still offering our Trial Membership and we will continue our Membership Incentive Plan.

The Membership Committee is committed to keeping Sunnyside successful for the future. It is our job as members to promote the exciting times to our community outside the gates at Sunnyside. In order to maintain our exclusive club, we need to always be looking to add new quality members. We very much appreciate our current membership and all the support you give the club. Don’t forget to come out and enjoy your club this summer. I look forward to seeing you soon!

I’ve been impressed with our new team, there is so very much to do. Business operations, staff training, looking at the way we do everything – the process will take months – but the changes we’ve already seen are extremely positive, all with an eye to producing a superior member experience day in and day out. Jason is a detail oriented, data driven manager that knows quality. Everyone on our Food and Beverage team is going to get a lot better by listening and learning. We are going to another level.Steve Menchinella, Cheri Baker and Jessica Mendoza continue to tag team the membership process for our club, and I am happy to report a steady stream of interest in both golf and social memberships. More importantly, we are attracting the right type of member, those that will respect our unique culture and friendly reputation. The golf course and clubhouse are both in great shape, who wouldn’t want to be a Sunnyside Member?I want to encourage our members to utilize all our club has to offer. While I see many of you for breakfast and lunch, our food during Wednesday Night Dining is really excellent and I’d like to see more members take advantage of this long-standing dinner tradition. Finally, you may have noticed that our parking lot and circle drive lighting has all been replaced and the place looks great at night time. Cart path repairs will commence in late June, and we will call the Sunnyside refresh project “a wrap”. Thanks to everyone for your support during this historic time at our club.

Cont’d message from the Board President

With February being almost a complete wash out, March and April have been really busy at the club. With the Sequoia Invitational moving back to the Fall, the President’s Cup was moved to March. The change in dates did not affect Phil Romero and Christian Parra! They won their flight last September and backed it up with a win this year! Also making the most of his return to the event was Steve Waltman. He and partner Tom Meckenstock cruised to victory in the Lincoln flight. The formidable team of Craig Crump and Morris Buller claimed victory in the Trump Flight!

It was on to the very popular 3 Stooges Tournament in April. The weather, food and golf course were outstanding as 132 players competed. The team of Ron Beglin, Bill Barry and guest, George Chavez, looked like they were playing a different course as they won by 7 shots over a tough field!

Now we look forward to our Men’s Club Championship which will be played in May. Call the Pro Shop to get signed up.

Our LPGA professional, Joella Paniccia, has been very active with women’s and junior clinics. We are doubling the amount of junior clinics over the summer to try and accommodate more families. Call the Pro Shop for details.

Check out Linda’s Corner in this edition of Clublites as well as the Sunnyside Women Golfers section on the website for all the details of the upcoming events for Sunnyside Women Golfers.

The tournament calendar is extremely busy until the end of June. The weekly eBulletins that go out on Sundays will keep you up-to-date on the coming weeks activities. The tournament calendar in the Members Only section of our website is up to date through June.

Spring is here finally. We have had a great rainfall season, well above average. Although the rain has caused some wet conditions, it has been beneficial over all for our course.

The course is in great shape. Greens have come through the spring aeration in very good shape. They are back to speed and putting true. Fairways have filled in and the Bermuda is coming out of dormancy. So, get out there and enjoy our course!

In February, the Board retained Brian Whitlark, USGA Agronomist, and on the 21st he visited Sunnyside to evaluate our greens and make suggestions on our practices. He found a high amount of surface moisture retention in the top 3-4 inches in all the greens. Brian recommended top dressing every 1-2 weeks with fine grade sand at 75-125 lbs. per thousand square feet. He also found our well water elevated in nitrogen. This is good for the fairways but actually detrimental for the greens during the hot weather months. He recommended little or no supplemental nitrogen be applied during these periods. Brian also noticed that our greens have been reduced in size over the years. Please see pictures above. The board is addressing this problem and evaluating options for returning them back to their original size.

In addition to the greens resizing, many of the bunkers will need to be reworked to remove the crowns that formed over the last 20 years of play. This is a long-term project and will require a course architect to provide construction drawings prior to any major remediation work.

Hot days and beautiful evenings are why our Fresno summers are so famous. It’s a time for boating, being outdoors, barbecues, family gatherings, and just all-around good times. We may not be able to help with the boating, but we sure can help with the rest. During the recent remodel, I sorted through hundreds of photos, read page after page of old Clublites excerpts, Board Minutes and even Fresno Bee articles. I spoke with members that have been here for decades, and the one thing that stood out time after time, was the feeling of family that once was the centerpiece of Sunnyside Country Club. I heard stories, saw pictures, and read articles about huge family events held annually at the club. We would love to bring the family atmosphere, that was once so prevalent, back to Sunnyside. Lord knows we have one of the finest golf courses in the valley, but we’d like for everyone, golfer and non-golfer alike, to enjoy the club we all love so much. Please keep an eye on your email for upcoming dates for family-inspired events that everyone will be sure to enjoy. Be a part of our traditions.

Members, remember to keep Wednesday Night Dining on your dining out or date night rotation. We offer first class dining in the Garden Room that rivals even the finest of restaurants. Our menu changes quarterly and offers a mouth-watering weekly special that will please the pickiest of palates. Patio seating is also available with a reservation.

If you’ve not had an opportunity to meet our new Clubhouse Manager, Jason Zeller, or our new Events Coordinator, Anna Zeller, please take a moment to say hello and introduce yourself. They both bring a wealth of knowledge, experience and fresh ideas to our club. I think you’ll be very pleased with both.

Lastly, as always, if you have any suggestions, or comments please email me at [email protected]

Trees and shade on the greens were also evaluated during the USGA visit. Although excessive shade is not an issue for the majority of greens, a number of trees were identified for either pruning or removal to improve sunlight exposure.

Finally, there has been much discussion from the membership on whether or not we should change our putting surfaces from bentgrass to champion Bermuda. Although a formal decision has not been made, due to capital restraints and an overall satisfaction with our bent greens by the members, it is unlikely that our greens surfaces will be changed in the near future.

Instead, our short-term priority is to remove and replace the encroaching Bermuda with bentgrass sod. Looking down the road, the green re-sizing and bunker reconstruction will be addressed when funds become available for a large-scale capital project.

With the incredible work that has taken place at our club over the past several years, and the desire to do any greens project the right way, the Green Committee is confident the Board direction is the best solution given the information we have at this time.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Whether a fan of Tiger Woods or not, there is no question his 2019 Masters Victory is a shot in the arm for the game of golf. With his last major title in 2008, most involved in youth golf, one of the only youth sports in year over year growth mode, are just now being introduced to him as a major champion for the first time. The kids picking up the
