Throughout the years Maple Knoll Village has seen additions and changes to t campus since its opening in 1977. Maple Knoll Communities Management

Team is constantly working with residents and staff to see what we can help

with to improve their lives here at Maple Knoll Village. One area that is in dire

need of renovations is our Auditorium on the campus of Maple Knoll Village.

The auditorium is an important part of our campus and, unfortunately, is often

inadequate to serve the needs of performers, presenters and audiences. The

Auditorium currently holds 150 people in a theatre style setting. We have

seen a growth in our senior population and the availability of new technology

ces that can be implemented to improve their experience.

Currently we have 540 residents living in Independent Living, Assisted Living

Skilled Nursing. The space is also utilized by our 621 employees, 110

residents in Senior Affordable Housing, Montessori Child Center student and

over 1,000 outside guests and family members each year. These various

groups allow for a large mixture of individuals of all ages to be served through

programming and special events held in the auditorium.

Now we are asking you to please consider giving back to the Auditorium we know and love and help support us in this endeavor.

The following renovations are proposed: Creation of additional seating space be

eliminating the stage, staging area and unnecessary storage.

New Flooring. We will remove the existing stage and

replace it with a portable stage that can not only be used in the auditorium but in other areas of our campus.

Renovations will allow for up to date hearing assistance technology to be incorporated.

New lighting will allow for better visibility for attendees as well as an improved performance space for guests.

The wall coverings and paint are aging, requiring repair and replacement.

Seating and tables are in need of replacement. Current seating is heavy and hard for residents to get in and out of.

We will consolidate existing storage to allow for additional seating space.

The doors are unable to lock, have worn through at the bottom and provide no sound barrier. New doors will be necessary.

A permanent bar and serving station will be added to accommodate for large events, outside gatherings. This addition will include a sink, ice machine, food and drink storage and staff serving space.

New audiovisual technology will include a projector system, additional screens for viewing in the back of the auditorium and recording capability. Recordings will then be able to be viewed on our Maple Knoll television station for homebound seniors and those unable to attend.

The entrance to the auditorium, The Village Center, will be enhanced to include automatic doors. The current solarium windows in the area are in need of replacement due to leaking and bubbled glazing. Reframing of the roof structure and insertion of new windows will better accommodate the space. A pergola will be added outside of the area.

The Village Center will also be updated with new seating, renovated coat closet and finishes. New perimeter radiant heaters will be added.

Renovations of the auditorium will provide a fresh look to the space and improved access for our residents as well as for outside community gatherings and presentations that will increase our partnership with the community. The project will cost $1,000,000 to be completed. Construction will begin once funds are raised.

Gifts to the Auditorium renovation project are tax-deductible and will help make a difference in the lives of those we serve. To learn more about how you can be a part of this unique project, please call The Development Office at 513.782.2424.

Hope Grows Here, Planting the Seeds for Tomorrow

Maple Knoll Communities, Inc. would like to thank volunteers, staff, donors, and residents who

helped to make for yet another exceptional annual fund campaign year.

In 1989, Maple Knoll Communities started an Annual Fund Corporate Campaign to support

programs, services and benevolent care throughout the organization. Each year a

campaign theme and goal are set to raise money for The Future Care Fund. With a theme of

“Hope Grows Here, Planting The Seeds for Tomorrow”, we prepared for not only today, but

future needs. Fred Robbins, Maple Knoll Board Member and Annual Fund Chair, once again led

staff and 32 volunteers.

In order to provide education on fundraising needs, three committee meetings were held with

separate kick off parties for employees, MKV, TKO, and informational sessions at specific

campus neighborhoods. The Maple Knoll phonathon was held in May and volunteers made calls

to approximately 1,400 constituents.

Together, we were able to raise $1,248,650 from 2,077 donors who gave a total of 7,919, the

highest amount of gifts in our history. We are happy to report that 1,076 individuals increased

their donations this fiscal year. Our corporate giving campaign also broke records by raising

$292,408 and far exceeding the goal of $176,000. This included 28 new corporate donors.

To celebrate the success Maple Knoll Village and The Knolls of Oxford will recognize donors and

volunteers with thank you celebration in upcoming months.

Thank you to all of those who allowed us to “Plant the Seeds for Tomorrow” and help make The

2018 Maple Knoll Communities Annual Fund a success! For information on Maple Knoll

Communities, Inc. or how to support the Maple Knoll Annual Fund please call 513.782.8629 or

visit our website at www.mkcommunities.org.

Maple Knoll Communities Living Legacy Society 2018 Inductees

The Living Legacy Society was founded in 1992 to recognize those individuals who make

a significant gift in a special way. This select group consists of special friends who have

named our organization in their estate plans, made a planned gift, or contributed $50,000

or more in outright gifts. Gifts to the Living Legacy Society can be made through a

bequest, charitable gift annuity, life insurance plan, trust, or other type of planned gift.

This year we were able to recognize 14 individuals who share in Maple Knoll

Communities’ mission and vision, as the newest members of the Living Legacy Society.

These individuals were honored at our Annual Dinner Celebration in May.

Robert A. and Lois W. Cody

Bob and Lois are small-town Ohio natives. They met at The Ohio State

University. Bob was in chemical engineering; Lois was in nurse's training.

After college Bob was employed by Procter and Gamble and had a 37-year

career there. Following graduation Lois worked in Labor and Delivery at

Christ Hospital for five or six years, until their second son was born. They

have two sons who live nearby; there are also four grandchildren. Bob had

a community garden when they lived in Wyoming, so the balcony of their

home at Maple Knoll’s Kensington neighborhood is full of plants, including

some beautiful ferns; he calls it "Grandpa's Garden." His other interests

are reading, genealogy, and woodworking. Lois considers herself to be

a "professional volunteer." She was active in Wyoming civic interests

and worked in the Cincinnati Zoo gift shop for 25 years. She has been

associated with the Friends of the Library Warehouse in Hartwell since

the year 2000. She also likes to read, quilt, do jigsaw puzzles on her iPad,

and do an intricate form of handwork called "counted cross-stitch."

Mary G. Davis

Mary was originally from Cincinnati. She attended college at St. Mary's of

the Spring. She earned a degree at Ohio Dominican University and her

PHD at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. After teaching and working

as a counselor in Detroit, Mary was Head of the Adult Department at the

Good Samaritan Mental Health Center in Dayton. This facility was the first

in the country to be integrated into a general hospital. Mary shared a home

with Marge Fanella for 50 years, and they moved here to Maple Knoll

Village together. Mary passed away in March of 2017.

her Master's Degree at Xavier University. Marge served as Principal at a school

for mentally disturbed students which accepted students from five schools in the

Dayton area. With counseling and classroom assistance the students were often

able to return to their original classrooms. Marge shared a home with Mary

Understanding the Stock Market

The “stock market” is actually many stock markets. In the USA, we have the New York Stock Exchange and the NASDAQ. There are 17 stock markets in the world with a value of $1 trillion or

more. If the thought of investing in the stock market scares you, you aren't alone. By understanding a little more about the stock market – and how the stock market works – you'll likely find it isn't as scary as you may think. Plus, you will better protect your life savings.

What Is a Stock or Share? When you buy a stock, you're buying a piece of the company. If there are 1000 shares of a company and you own 100 them, then you own 10% of that company. Many small companies are owned privately and do not issue shares.

Why Buy Shares? Investors trade a company's stock because the perceived value of company changes over time due to how much money it earns, its profitability, various risks, and other market factors. Investors can make or lose money. The market is the vast array of investors and traders who buy and sell the stock, frequently pushing the price up or down. Brokers (Schwab, Ameritrade, Fidelity, and others) usually act on our behalf to buy and sell stocks.

Trying to predict which stock will rise or fall, and when, is very difficult. Over time, stocks as a whole tend to rise, which is why many investors choose to buy a basket of stocks in various sectors (this is called diversification) and hold them for the long-term. Examples of sectors include retail, technology, real estate, and utilities. Investors who use the diversification approach do not concern themselves with day-to-day or even year-to-year fluctuations in stock prices. The ultimate goal of buying shares is to make money by buying stocks in companies you expect to do well. Long term investors, which most of us are and should continue to be, should buy and hold some stocks for most of their lifetime. Long term thinking is supported by the fact that a collection of 500 of the major US company stocks (the S&P 500) has averaged 10% growth per year over the past 4-5 decades. Of course, some years are bad for the stock market, and some years are good.

Some companies also pay a dividend to shareholders. A dividend is a cut of the company's profit, which the company sends to shareholders as long as the company continues to pay. Usually independent from the dividend, the share price will continue to fluctuate. Investors seeking regular income from their stock market investments tend to favor buying stocks that pay high dividends. When you own shares of a company, you own a piece of that business and therefore, you have a vote in how it is run and about electing their board of directors

Learning more about the stock market takes time. But understanding the stock market means that you can both protect your assets and growth more wealth over your lifetime.
