WELCOME to the 2017 edition ofthe Bovey Tracey Town Guide andwe hope this guide will provideimportant local information forresidents and help visitors to enjoytheir visit to the town.

Bovey Tracey is a unique place– a magnet that attracts visitorsfrom around the world throughoutthe year.

Bovey Tracey nestles on thesouth-east edge of DartmoorNational Park.

Set amidst beautiful countryside,

the town’s history can be tracedback to Saxon times, with links tothe English Civil War as well asthe pottery and railway industries.

In 2010, Bovey Traceycelebrated its 750th anniversaryof the signing of its Market andFair Charter by Henry III in 1260.

Close to Bovey Tracey isHeathfield, which is a substantialresidential and significant businessarea within the parish. Nearby isBovey Heath, the site of anEnglish Civil War battle. Locallegend tells that in 1664 duringthe civil war, Cromwellian troopsreputedly surprised Royalistofficers who were drinking andplaying cards in a house in EastStreet thought to be Front HouseLodge. On making a hasty exit, one of the Royalists had the ideaof grabbing a pile of money fromthe card table and throwing it out

of thewindow. TheRoyalists madetheir escape, while the poorly paidParliamentarians scrabbled for thecoins and fled to Heathfield.

The Battle of Bovey Heath wasfought the following day withCromwell winning 400 horsesand capturing seven regimentalcolours. Today, Bovey Heath is ahaven for rare plants and wildlife, which is now owned andmanaged by Devon Wildlife Trust.

ParkeBovey Tracey

PARKE sits of the outskirts of Bovey Tracey anda five minute walk from the centre of the town. There are lots of circular walks of differentlengths from a gentle stroll along by the river toa more challenging walk through the woodland.

A walks leaflet is available from the NationalTrust office opposite Home Farm café. The caféserves home cooked dishes, teas, coffees, cakesand ices and is open all year. Check openingtimes at www.homefarmcafe.co.uk or ring01626 830016.

Parke has a fascinating history and clues to itshistory can be found all over the place.

Major Hole left Parke to the National Trust in1974. The house you see above, constructedaround 1826, was built on the site of a Tudorhouse, remains of which can be seen in thegardens. The house is currently leased toDartmoor National Park Authority and not opento the general public. The two rows of graniteposts in the parkland, were rails from the

nearby tramway usedto take granite fromHaytor quarry toStover Canal atTeigngrace. One ofthe old trucks usedcan be seen in theopen shed behindthe house oppositethe lavatories.

The weir on theriver dates back to

medieval times and feeds theleat, which was built to run a water-powered mill in Bovey Tracey.

There is an abundance of wildlife at Parke. Inthe meadows look out for orchids and raggedrobin. Along the River Bovey you may seekingfishers and dippers – it is home to salmonand sea trout too. Keep an eye out for otter

spraints (dung – you will smell it first!). In the woodlands, you may see badgers,

foxes, roe deer, great spotted and greenwoodpeckers. Bats emerge at dusk from aroundthe buildings.

Parke continues to be a managed workinglandscape to support a number of wildlifehabitats, a place for people to enjoy and toproduce food. The walled garden dates back tothe 1800’s, when it would have provided softfruit for Parke House. The ground slopes givingthe walls an unusual shape. After many years ofneglect it is now jointly run by the National Trustand Bovey Climate Action to produce locally-grown fruit and vegetables, including, apricots, figs, apples, pears, root vegetables,

salad leaves and cut flowers. The orchard

contains 150cider apple trees.Parke holds anannual apple dayearly in Octoberwhere apples arepicked and madeinto apple juice andcider using anapple press.

The dismantledrailway line is used today as part of the Wraycycle trail.

Dear Friends,

The Church is very much alive, well andactive in your community! Between us we offera wide variety of worshipping styles in verydifferent buildings, so that there will besomething for you, whether your preference isfor guitars and drums or a traditional organ; forthe ancient beauty of a parish church or thesimplicity of a school hall; for worship that isformal or informal... within all our churches youwill find warmth, friendship and support.

Our aim is for our different styles andapproaches to complement each other and so,although the churches are varied, we worktogether closely. Between us, we offer a rangeof regular groups and activities for all ages, from babes and toddlers through to fellowshipand care for the elderly – too many to list here, but something for everyone.

Being a part of our community, contributing toand working for its wellbeing, is also animportant expression of our Christian faith, andso you will find many of our church membersactively involved in the wider life of BoveyTracey and Heathfield, and our church hallsavailable for community use. We also havecollection points for donations to HITS, our localFoodbank covering Teignbridge, and betweenus as churches we support a large range oflocal and global causes and charities.

So it doesn’t matter whether you are new toour area or have been here for ages, whetheryou’ve had any contact with or experience ofchurch before, or whether you have a firm faith, are searching for some meaning or are simplycurious – you are very welcome to explore thechurches and to find out more. Just ask at anyof the churches about what’s going on acrossthem all, or look out for publicity of particularevents and activities.

Bovey Tracey Athletic Football Club

38

ALTHOUGH football has been played in Boveysince the late 1890s, the present club was formedaround 1950 by the merger of Bovey Town andBovey St Johns who played at the RecreationGround. This merger was much the work of FrankFrench who was, at the time, the local policeman.

The earliest documented game was on November11, 1899, when Bovey entertained Torquay Unitedfor a friendly in what was Torquay’s first season.Bovey went on to win the match 2-1 with acontroversial penalty, the last kick of the game at theend of 20 minutes injury time.

On March 31, 1961, in front of 3,000 spectatorsBovey won the Herald Cup 3-1 with goals fromSlocombe, Hydon and Fone. Bovey have alsoappeared in this final, on four other occasions in1931/32 (Bovey St Johns), 1938/39 (Bovey Town),1993/94 and 2003/04 all ending in defeat.

In 1979 the football club made their biggestpurchase to date with the purchase of land at MillMarsh Park (the current ground), however, part ofthis land was sold under a compulsory purchaseorder in 1984 to assist in the construction of the‘Bovey Bypass’.

The 2008/09 season once again saw the clubachieve new heights, with the use of new facilitieshere at the renamed Western Counties RoofingGround. The East Division title was lost on the finalday of the season but promotion to the PremierDivision as runners-up was achieved. They werealso beaten finalists in the Devon Premier Cup Final.

During the seasons of 2009/10, 2010/11 and2011/12, the club saw a succession of managersas Bovey Tracey retained their Premier Divisionstatus each season. With Football Foundationassisted grant funding, floodlights and coveredseating and standing areas have been added, making watching a great experience for thetownsfolk, also a well-equipped kitchen offeringsupporters a wide range of hot and cold food anddrinks.

The club’s substantial youth system runs teamsfrom under 8s to under 16s and will be creating anUnder 18s team in the 2015-16 season, therebyfilling the final gap in the club’s player developmentstructure.

The club continues to be the envy of many largerclubs in the region, producing a large number of

talented youngsters.Recently, Cliff Walters(pictured right) went on tocaptain the Devon Under18s side, and Liam Headhas represented hiscountry at Internationallevel, playing in both thehome internationals, aswell as the U17sEuropeanChampionships.

There have recently been further ground andfacility improvements, with the provision of a newpurpose built pitch, to accommodate the under 9sand 10s, at the Western Counties Ground. Thisfacility is a huge coup for BTAFC which can nowboast to having one of the best playing surfaces forkids of this age group, anywhere in the county. It isthe clubs intention, to continue to improve itsfacilities with the provision of a new changing roomcomplex at the Western Counties Ground.

With the advent of Torquay Utd Ladies (who playall their home fixtures at the ground) now being anintegral part of the club, the need is there to furtherdevelop women’s football, so a dedicated changingroom suite is a must. As well as the Torquay Ladies,it is the club’s intention to advertise and helpdevelop the game for girls of all ages, hopefullyculminating in a second 11 playing under a BoveyTracey badge, but with a view to eventuallyattaining the skill levels required to progress into theTorquay Ladies’ 1st team. The ladies have been abreath of fresh air at the club, and the club willcontinue to support them in whatever way it can.

It is still the club’s aim to focus on its best assetswhich, in their opinion, are the local youngsters. Theclub therefore strives to continuously improve itsfacilities and coaching staff, thus allowing it to focuson what’s important, rather than tying itself downwith huge player budgets, that can and doesdamage football in general.

The club house is located on the Rec (next door tothe swimming pool), and new members or visitorsare always welcome.
