Aibonito’s Festival de las Flores A flower and plant lover’s heaven. This annual plant, flower, gardening and landscaping festival features exhibits and the sale of the most popular and newest varieties of tropical flowers and plants, as well as pottery, garden accessories and fertilizers. Varieties of bromeliads, orchids, cactus, bonsais, fruit plants, bougainvilleas; annuals and perennials, are only a few of the beauties you may find at this market. It all started in 1957 when the ThirdGardeningClubofAibonitoorganized a plant and shrub exhibition to entertain attendants. The concept was ellaborated even further with the enthusiasm of exhibitors, and in 1969 it acquired a commercial character,

becoming one of the most at-tended gardening events in the island. It extends some 25 acres of land, and exhibits the prod-ucts of more than 40 florists and farmers. Gardening enthu-siasts from all around the is-land visit the 10 day long event every year. This year you may enjoy the trip to this festival with ACS Re-location Readiness Program on Friday, July 1st, leaving at 7:00 am and returning at 6:00 pm. For details or to sign-up call 787-707-3290 / 3310.

Team Member Highlight

On May 20th 2011 the resonant echoes of military candences where heard throughout the entire in-stallation as military troops ran the traditional Armed Forces Day two mile route. This year was COL. John D. Cushman’s and CSM Derrick Simpson’s first time as leaders of the run in Fort Buchanan. As a day designated by the Army to pay tribute to Men and Women who serve in the Armed Forces, troops from Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard participated and were judged for uniformed formation, uniformity, motivation, and integrity.

Juan Carlos Rodriguez joined the DFMWR team in June of 2007 as a Laborer. Golf Course Manager, Mr. Jim Doulin has to say about Juan Carlos: “Since my tenure Juan Carlos has been one of the most dedicated employees at the Golf Course Complex. He is continuously performing a variety of duties and tasks including supporting numerous activities and facilities. He is most willing and eager to assist with junior golf functions and introducing the golf course to the general population. He recently has been involved with the DeployedStudentsDaywhen he actively introduced the role of the Golf Course and DFMWR to students of deployed military.Juan Carlos volunteers to assist the golf operations when there’s a shortfall

in staffing or capabilities. His dedication ensures the continuance of operations and maintains a high level of customer satisfaction. Al-though Juan Carlos’ primary duties are mowing and maintenance, he routinely supports the Marketing department, Community Club & Conference Center, Special Events and NAF Services Branch. From January 2009 until 2011, Juan Carlos was appointed the GolfCourseSafetyOfficer and was instrumental in improving the safety operations of the golf course. Juan Carlos is also one of four employees trained and able to operate the self-propelled vertical elevating & boom supported lift vehicles. We congratulate Juan Carlos for a job well done!

Celebrating the Strength of our Nation: The Army’s 236th Birthday“Letusalso remember that forgenerations,wehavedonethehardworkofprotectingourownpeople,aswellasmillionsaroundtheglobe.Wehavedonesobecauseweknowthatourownfu-tureissafer,ourownfutureisbrighter,ifmoreofmankindcanlivewiththebrightlightoffreedomanddignity.” --President Obama, Washington, March 28th, 2011

The Continental Army was established 236 years ago on this day- established to defend fledging colonies and secure our independence from oppression. Since that time- from Bunker Hill to Bagdad and from Cold Harbor to Kandahar- American Soldiers have been the safeguard of our Nation’s freedom and a shield from oppression for our friends and allies.

Throughout our history, our mission has remained constant- to preserve America’s peace and security, and to provide for the defense of the United States. Today we continue to do this at home and abroad by fielding the most dis-ciplined, competent and fit force in the world and maintaining the bonds of trust that unite us both as Soldiers and as Americans.

As we look to the future and recognize the challenges of this dynamic international security en-vironment and the threats it may pose, we know that America’s Army will confront each with the same unsurpassed courage, selflessness and dedi-cation that has characterized our history for 236 years. On the occasion of our birthday, we want to thank each of you- the Soldiers, Civilians, Families and Veterans who have sacrificed and persevered throughout our history to make our Army the “Strength of our Nation.” Happy Birthday! Signedby: Raymond F. Chandler III Sergeant Major of the Army

The DirectorateofHumanResources has just completed five half day sessions of Mas-terResiliencyTraining(MRT). This is the first MRT course of many to come by ArmyCom-munityService(ACS) at Fort Buchanan. The Master Resiliency Training (MRT) is part of the ComprehensiveSoldierFitness program (CSF), which focuses on the five dimensions of strength: emotional, social, spiritual, family and physical well-being. The CSF program builds Soldiers’ and Family members’ core strengths of physical fitness, emotional awareness, social commu-nications, family values and spiritual beliefs. MRT training aims to increase self-awareness, self-regulation, optimism, mental agility,

character strengths and connections through practical, teachable skills. Participants in the program learn how to manage their thoughts and emotions, which in turn, enhances their personal and professional relationships.

MRT also teaches skills, including energy management, problem solving, improved communication, thinking traps, real-time resil-iency and huntingupthegoodstuff; and mak-ing optimism a habit. Resiliency is a skill that can be learned, developed, and mastered. Whether you were born resilient, or have gained it through life’s challenges, anyone can restore or expand resiliency through training and practice. MRT classes vary depending on the needs of the organization/Family members. For fur-

ther information or details about MRT, please contact ACS at 787-707-3804/3310/3295.
