The Veterans Day National Ceremony is held each year on November 11th at Arlington National Cemetery. The ceremony commences precisely at 11:00 am with a wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknowns and continues in-side the Memorial Amphitheater with a parade of colors by veterans’ organizations and remarks from dignitaries. The ceremony is intended to honor and thank all who served in the United States Armed Forces.

ARECIBO RADIO TELESCOPE In the northwest mountains of the island, nestled among the karst-country hills, is the Arecibo Ionospheric Observatory, or Radio Telescope, the largest of its kind and one of the most important research facilities on the face of the earth. The huge dish-more than a dozen football fields could fit inside-sits in a sinkhole and is forever aimed at the sky, tuned to detect the slightest sounds emitted by the farthest stars. It is the place where planets outside our solar system were discovered and is the home base for NASA’s SETI, the Search for Extra-Terrestri-al Intelligence, which you may remember from the Jodie Foster movie Contact, part of which was filmed here. In the Visitors’ Center you will see how the colossal structure is used to study ra-dio emissions from distant galaxies, quasars, pulsars and many other cosmic sources. The

exhibits are interactive and contain extensive information on astronomy and atmospheric science. It is the impressive size and magnitude of the tiled dish that leaves visitors breathless when they hike to the viewing platform and see it glimmering in the sun. Indeed it is one of the only landmarks in Puerto Rico that can eas-ily be seen from a jetliner passing by at 33,000 feet! The Arecibo Ionospheric Observatory is open Wednesday to Friday from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm and Saturday, Sunday and most holidays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.How to Get ThereFrom San Juan take Road 22 to Arecibo. In Arecibo, take Road 129 to 134, then Road 635 to 625, which ends at the observatory. For more information, please call: (787) 878-2612.

under your tree that may be food items and may be very tempting to curious pets.Chocolate: Many of us are aware that chocolate can be hazardous to our pet’s health, yet it con-tinues to be the most common toxic ingestion in our pet population. The primary toxins in choco-late are caffeine and theobromine (a compound related to caffeine). Depending on the dose, these compounds can cause hyperexcitability followed by weakness, loss of balance, seizures, and ultimately coma and death. The doses of theobromine and caffeine are dependent on the amount and type of chocolate ingested. While all chocolate poses these risks, types of chocolate with a more bitter taste tend to have a higher concentration of these toxins. If your pet ingests chocolate, it is important that they are seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Other Toxic Foods: Macadamia nuts, grapes, chewing gum with xylitol, unbaked yeast dough.

Christmas Trees: Tree ornaments can present a hazard to pets. There are a wide variety of orna-ments on the market, and some look very similar to pet toys (especially to cats). Most of these or-naments have hooks that can cause injury to the paws or inside of your pet’s mouth. If ingested, they can also damage the intestinal tract. If your cat is tempted to play with the ornaments on your tree, decorate the bottom third of the tree with non-breakable, plastic, or wooden orna-

ments that do not have hooks, or decorate only the top two-thirds of your tree. You may feel your tree looks funny, but it will save you from spending the holidays at an emergency veteri-nary clinic.Animals are also attracted to Christmas lights, and will chew or pull on the cords. Electrocution or burns to the face and mouth can result when a pet bites an electric cord. Lights need to be hung out of reach of pets, and animals should not be left unattended around Christmas trees or other strands of lights. This is not only a dan-ger to the pet, but to the family. Frayed electric cords are a hazard to the entire household and an overzealous cat at play can easily bring down a poorly secured Christmas tree. Trees should be secured to a wall or ceiling hook. This will help prevent the tree from toppling over should your pet decide to jump on it to get to a tempt-ing ornament.

For more information or if your pet experiences any of these problems, call the Fort Buchanan Veterinary Treatment Facility at 787-707-2038. If it is an emergency or outside of the clinic’s business hours (M/W/F 8:00 am – 3:30 pm, T/TH 8:00 am - 5:00 pm), please contact your local veterinary emergency clinic. Our Holiday hours are 8:00 am-12:00 pm on December 28th, 29th, 30th. We will be open these days for walk-in appointments. We will be closed on December 24th, 27th, 31st and January 3rd.

Sports & Fitnessnovember 2010 • DFMWR Events Guide

By Rafael Brisueño, Athletic Trainer at Fort Buchanan Fitness Center. NSCA, ACE-CPT, AFAA-GFI

If you’re like most of us, you were taught the importance of warm-up exercises back in grade school, college and even the armed forces and you’ve likely continued with pretty much the same routine ever since. Science, however, has moved on. Researchers now be-lieve that some of the more entrenched ele-ments of many athletes’ warm-up regimens are not only a waste of time but actually bad for you. The old presumption that holding a stretch for 20 to 30 seconds — known as static stretching — primes muscles for a workout is dead wrong. Old school stretching from the 70’s to 90’s actually weakens them. Recent studies reveal, athletes generated less force from their leg muscles after static stretching than they did after not stretching at all. This stretching decreases muscle strength by as much as 30 percent. Also, stretching one leg’s muscles can reduce strength in the other leg as well, probably because the central nervous system rebels against the movements.muscle fuel more effectively. They also withstand loads better. onto all fours and crawl the width of the court up are nine times less likely to be injured.

Thanksgiving is a special day to thank God for everything we have and appreciate. Army families and friends look at this day as a gathering or a get together to be grateful to God for everything.History about the Proclamation of Thanksgiving as a National Day:• The pilgrims sailed to the United States of America from England to Holland (the Nether-lands), later the landed in the USA, to escape religious persecution. • President George Washington (1st president of the USA) proclaimed a National Day for Thanksgiving but unfortunately some were op-posed to the idea and so it was not warrant as a National Holiday. • President Thomas Jefferson (3rd president of the USA) officially declined the making of a National Day for Thanksgiving.

• Sarah Josepha Hale, a magazine editor whose efforts eventually led to what we recognize as Thanksgiving. Hale wrote many editorials championing her cause in her Boston Ladies’ Magazine, and later, in Godey’s Lady’s Book. Finally, after a 40- year campaign of writing editorials and letters

to governors and presidents, Hale’s obsession became a reality when, in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln (16th president of the USA) proclaimed the last Thursday in November as a National Day of Thanksgiving.• Army Families use this day to be with their friends and families after a long period of time. We, all, can use this day to celebrate that the pil-grims and Indians came together.

Thank you and I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving! God Bless!
