Tibes Indigenous Ceremonial CenterIn 1975, hurricane Eloisa passed near Puerto Rico with torrential rains that caused massive flooding. A sugar cane worker and farmer from a sector of Tibes in Ponce, while searching for wood to make charcoal, discovered rem-nants of indigenous cultures that had been buried over time and were uncovered by the flooding. Over time the ArcheologicalSocietyoftheSouthwest, and theGuayniaSocietyofArcheologyandHistoryattheCatho-licUniversityofPuertoRico made further explorations and dis-covered the oldest Antillian Indian ceremonial complex yet un-covered in Puerto Rico, consisting of nine ball courts and three ceremonial plazas. Within its boundaries is the largest indigenous cemetery yet discovered, consisting of 186 human skeletons, most from the Igneriand the rest from the Pre-Taino cultures.

At the present time, the TibesIndigenousCeremonialCenterhas the greatest number of visitors for a site of its type in Puerto Rico and the Antilles, more than 80,000 a year. How to get there: Take Highway 52LuisAFerré, take exit #310 (Ponce North/Adjuntas) green sign at right Tibes, turn left to road #503.ponce.inter.edu/tibesExerpts from article by Arql. Staying Financially Fit When Your Spouse is Deployed Getting into a savings routine during deploymentIf you prepare before the deployment, it will be easier to get into a simple routine during deployment. Here are some ways to help keep your bills in check:• Discuss the bills before your Spouse leaves. Make a list of all of your combined bills and when they’re due. Are any bills paid through automatic checking? For which bills will you need to send out checks? Also make sure that you have the necessary Powers of Attorney in place in case you have to make a purchase on behalf of your service member. (Your Legal Assistance Office can help with this.)

• Don’t overspend before the deployment. Make a budget for deployment spending. Be sure not to go overboard with electronics and equipment that you don’t need.• Keep an ongoing checklist of your bills. Check your bank statement regularly to make

sure that checks are clearing on time. If you need help balancing your checkbook, be sure to ask for help at ACS Financial Readi-ness Program, 787-707-3310• Always keep some extra in savings. Make sure you keep some extra savings for emer-gencies, even if it’s just a few dollars from each paycheck. The Military Saves program at www.militarysaves.com can help you set savings goals, put them in writing, and stick to them.• Live off of your pre-deploy-ment income. Sometimes extra pays mean that you have more income than you did before your spouse was deployed, and you may be tempted to spend more. If this is your situation, try to live off of your usual pre-deployment com-bined income, and use extra income to pay down debt or to put more into savings.

Whether your challenges are financial, stress management, deci-sion making, communication, grief, blended-family issues, career related, parenting skills, special needs, or even just for making new friends. Running on a Treadmills vs Running on Roadby Rafael Brisueno NSCA, ACE-, CPT, AFAA -GFI

In every gym we can observe mostly two kinds of runners: recreational runners and serious runners. The recreational runners (those who do not compete in races, people trying to lose weight, gain cardiovascular resistance, liber-ate stress, etc). Serious runners are more con-cerned about performance and worry whether if they can actually use treadmill work to boost their performances. There are differences between running in a treadmill than running in a track or road. First the neurological pattern of running on a tread-mill is very different than running in a road . When you run on road your legs create pro-pulsive forces which accelerate their centre of mass and drive it forward. Your centre of mass is decelerated during each recovery (early-stance) phase of the gait cycle, only to be accelerated forwards again as propulsive forces are created by the stance leg. As you continue to run, cen-tre of mass is accelerated and decelerated over and over again as it moves steadily forward. When you run on a treadmill the centre of mass is static (at least in the forwards-backwards plane). There is no forward progress; instead, the running surface disappears behind the run-ner. In fact, the treadmill belt moves your legs and feet under and behind your centre of mass and, to preserve stability, their key task is to move the support leg back in front of the centre of mass in time for the impact with the treadmill belt. The key function of the leg muscles during treadmill running is not to produce propulsive forces but to re-position the legs so as to keep the centre of mass stable.Running a discrete pace on a treadmill is not the same, in terms of overall physiological effort, as the same pace on firm ground; for example, six-minute miling pace on a treadmill usually produces lower heart and oxygen consumption rates than same-pace running on the track. In other words your body consumes and demands more oxygen when running on the ground than running in a treadmill. The lower demands of treadmill running is definitely attributable to lack of wind resistance; it may also reflect the biomechanical and kinematic differences be-tween treadmill and normal road running.Foot and Leg BiomechanicsWith treadmill running, your legs becoming less propulsion-oriented and more balance-orient-ed. This affects foot impact, stride length and stride frequency. When your foot hits the belt, it compresses and even momentarily slows it, adding an almost imperceptible hiccup to your stride. This does not occur on a track. Also, your foot is in contact with a treadmill’s belt longer

than it would be with a track’s surface. The belt literally hugs and transports your foot, and lengthens your stride behind you -- not optimal for distance runners, who benefit more from shorter strides and quicker foot-strikes.Benefits of Running• Increases bone density, reducing the risk of osteoporosis • Strengthens and tones the leg and core muscles• Improves cardiovascular health, reducing risk of heart disease• Assists in reducing body fat percentage • Improves circulation• Aids the digestive process• Improves immune function• Improves mood and reduces stress by releasing endorphins in the brainIf you are planning to improve your time for APFT, running a 5k, or 10K the treadmill won’t be a good instrument to improve your times. Treadmill running would never substitute a real terrain in a real race or test. If you come from a sedentary life and want to improve your general fitness level, lose weight, avoid bad weather and prefer to exercise indoor then it’s a choice. I’ve been a trainer for high performance running athletes and sedentary customers for almost two decades and have never seen one person improve their times by training on a treadmill rather than on road or by doing repetitions on the track. The movement patterns of the two types of activity are so different that treadmill training might even retard improvement. For more information about how to improve your running times call the Fitness Center at 787-707-3767. We will be glad to help you.

Itwillchangeyour life forever. Although you un-doubtedly heard those six words many times after announcing that you were expecting, you couldn’t have imagined what they really meant. And then the moment came. You held your baby in your arms and felt an outpour-ing of emotion like you had never known before. And just like they said, nothing was ever the same.

Motherhood is a lifelong journey that’s as unique as every woman who embarks on it. No other role defines us as deeply and fills us with as much compassion or tests our strength and patience more extremely! No other relation-ship fills our hearts with as much love, wonder and awe for another human being.

Although motherhood is a timeless calling, today’s moms have unique challenges and rewards. In this book you’ll learn from other mothers and seasoned grandmothers who share the universal worries, the tears and the laughs that come with the job, as well as the wisdom to help you be the very best mom you can be.

These stories are for every mom, whether you’re an expectant or an adoptive mom, a stay-at-home or working mom, or a grand-mother watching your grandchildren grow. Share this book with any mom to remind her of the profound role she will forever play in her child’s life.

Read the Book, See the Movie Each month, prior to the movie event, copies of the selected title will be available at the Library. See the movie and receive a free bag of popcorn even if you haven’t read the book. For more information about Readthe Book, See the Movie, visit or call the Library at (787) 707-3208.

High Temperatures Require Precautions While Playing GolfAs the season nears for the extreme heat period, there are some things to remember while on the Golf Course Complex.

Prepare for your day of golf properly. Take several towels. I try to keep one towel which I soak with water prior to play and use it continuous-ly keeping my neck and head damp and cool.

Choose loose fitting clothes and light weight fabrics. Many of the companies specializing in golf attire offer the performance fabrics such as Coolmax which are moister wicking and very lightweight. The Coolmax fabrics also help protect against UV rays. Choose light colors such as white, beige, yellows, etc. for maximum relief from the heat. The Fort Buchanan Golf Course pro shop has a variety of performance fabric attire in most sizes available for sale.

Headwear is a must in extreme heat and protection from UV rays. I recommend wearing a visor which allows the top of your head to release the heat unlike regular caps. There are many types of regular caps with

lightweight mesh materials which do a good job in allowing the heat to escape. Also, pro-tect your eyes and use sunglasses. Your optometrist can best advise you but any sun-glasses are better than none. The Fort Bu-chanan Golf Course pro shop has a wide array of eyewear and headwear available for sale.

Always use sunblock or sunscreen. This will not help with the heat but will protect your skin from the sun’s rays. Remember to cover those areas such as the top of your ears and for those of us with less hair... remember the top of your head and forehead.

Finally, drink plenty of fluids, preferable water. Be aware of the indications of heat exhaustion and take appropriate measures. Some of the symptoms are heavy sweating, paleness, muscle cramps, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea. If heat exhaustion is un-treated, it may progress to heat stroke, which is a medical emergency. Seek medical atten-tion immediately (call 787-707-4911)
