Best Kept Village Competition

Cut and edge your lawn regularly. Plant bedding plants when the threat of frost has gone (or cover

them with horticultural fleece on cold nights). Hoe weeds on a dry day, while they are still small. It’s time to finish pruning Spring flowering shrubs . Some fast growing annuals can be sown in empty ground, e.g.

marigolds, nasturtiums, candytuft, cornflower etc. seeds are readily available.

Hedges can be trimmed providing there are no birds nesting in them, if so wait until the young have flown.

Feed roses with a suitable fertiliser when the first flowers drop. A water butt connected to the down pipe from your roof will

provide water for most garden needs. Remove flowers as they fade to encourage a long flowering

period. Have you considered a red, white and blue theme? Happy gardening!! Let’s win the Best Kept Village this year.

Scorton has entered the Best Kept Village again. The competition is judged the first two weeks of July although nobody knows the exact date. Scorton won the large village class in 2008 and this funded the hand rails on the village steps near the Post Office. Lets win again in 2012.

Here are some hints to get your garden looking in good shape for the summer

Travelling in India is an experience not to be missed but it is not for the faint hearted. It is an attack on the senses in every way. The smell of the exotic spices versus that of the open sewers. The taste of the fabulous food versus the ever present taste of the dust. The sound of bird song verses the constant honking of vehicles and the men hocking up phlegm. The sight of the beautiful vibrant colours of the women’s clothing versus the everyday squalor in which people live and work. The feel of everything you touch having seen better days, the feel of the scorching heat, the feel of the appalling road surfaces as you are constantly jolted about and the claustrophobic feeling generated by the sheer number of people and vehicles crowding you out. It is a country where you can ride on elephants, drift along waterways carpeted with the soft mauve blossoms of water hyacinths and eat delicately flavoured fish that has been caught less than 10 minutes before. But also a country where you need to step over rubbish, walk around mangy animals, protect yourself from monkey attacks, avoid electrocution from the bare wires and deal with the constant threat of dysentery. The list is endless. I travelled in Kerala, Assam and Varanasi, I am sure that the golden triangle, which includes the Taj Mahal, and resorts such as Goa are probably sanitised for tourism and cater for those visitors who have a romantic, idealised concept of India. But if you have the stomach and the courage, step outside this protective circle and experience India as it is. You won’t regret it!! Jenny Harper
