The Call of the Christian

Not always as the whirlwind's rush

On Horeb's mount of fear,

Not always as the burning bush

To Midian's shepherd seer,

Nor as the awful voice which came

To Israel's prophet bards,

Nor as the tongues of cloven flame,

Not always thus, with outward sign

Of fire or voice from Heaven,

The message of a truth divine

The call of God is given!

Awaking in the human heart

Love for the true and right, -

Zeal for the Christian's better part,

Strength for the Christian's fight.

Nor unto manhood's heart alone

the holy influence steals:

Warm with a rupture not its own,

The heart of woman feels!

As she who by Samaria's wall

The Saviour's errand sought, -

As those who with the fervent Paul

And meek Aquilla wrought:

Or those meek ones whose martyrdom

Rome's gathered grandeur saw:

Friends,

As I was preparing for the installation service of our new officers, I stumbled across a wonderful poem written by John Greenleaf Whittier. I want to share a portion of Whittier’s poem, which explores the many ways God calls people to His service. Whittier writes about the unusual mani-festations of God’s call, but he does not stop there. He also writes about the common ways in which God calls people, which is a simple tug on the heart. Whether we experience God’s call from a whirlwind or by a simple tug of the heart, we must listen and obey. Friends, may we all be willing to hear His call and obey.

DCC Presbyterian Women offers 3 monthly circle meetings.

All ladies are encouraged to be part of a circle.

Circles are a great way to grow in faith and fellowship.

February 11 PWCT meeting 10:00am

Tuesday, FEBRUARY 5 at 10:00am.

Circles will meet during January as follows:

Dorcas – Tuesday, February 12, 1:00 p.m. at the church

Lydia – Tuesday, February 19, 6:30 p.m. at the church

Anna – Thursday, February 21, at 10:00 a.m. at the church

For the month of February, PW will collect balls for the Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes which we will fill in November.

They must be small enough to fit in a shoebox, or deflated with a pump.

We will also collect any gently used handbags and

small toiletries or other items carried in a purse for our March 5th Mary Martha Day project- filling the purses for

the Gulf Coast Center for Nonviolence.

PW also welcomes your pledges to aid our work. They may be given to the church secretary or placed in the PW box in the

copy room. Please make checks to the church and mark for PW.

The Adult and Teen and the WEE and Children’s Libraries are open on Sunday morning before and after the 8 a.m. service, and only open before the 10 a. m. church service. Both Libraries are open on Wednesdays 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. and most days dur-

ing Church Office hours.

Not able to visit the DCC Library? Choose books from your library that you would like to read; have your selections delivered to you and picked up when you have finished reading them. Contact Carol Benzing at 228-254-5240 for a book list.

The Library Cart stationed at the main entrance offers books in preparation for Lent.

Please borrow as many books as you like.

The Diamondhead Community Church Library maintains a collection of media for all ages that provides the opportunity for studying, learning and teaching. It is a resource that supports personal and congregational growth in our Christian faith and living so the members and friends of Diamondhead Community Church continue to foster an environment that “seeks to meet the needs of each other”.

Books give comfort; provide information, increase knowledge, and much more. Always patient while waiting to be read, they make us smile, feel sad, scare us and are friends, good friends and therefore hard to relinquish. I sincerely applaud those members and friends of DDC Library that give their treasures to our library. When reviewing a newly received stack of books, I am frequently delighted by the inscriptions found on the inside covers. Each book has its own story and history, but an inscription, dried flower or a lovely bookmark offer more introspection. Inscriptions are meaningful to the writer and often cherished by the receiver, a bookmark has an obvious purpose, but why was it chosen and what was the reason that dried flower was placed in this book, but most heart-warming are the inscriptions found in many of our WEE and Children’s Books that were written by the children from John McMillan Presbyterian Church in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania to our children at DCC. The books were donated to the “newly organized library” at DCC in 2007. Thank you Myra for sharing an insert from a June 2007 Sunday Bulletin that provided the information about John McMillan Presbyterian Church in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.
