1210 M.R.C. Dunn Nutritional Laboratory Dr. R. G. Whitehead, director of the Medical Research Council Child Nutrition Unit, Mulago Hospital, Kampala, Uganda, has also been appointed director of the Dunn Nutritional Laboratory, Cambridge, in succession to Dr. E. H. Kodicek. It is intended that the dual appointment will be accompanied by a close association between the two establishments. Dr. Whitehead, who is 39, graduated B.sc. in biochemistry from the University of Leeds in 1956 and PH.D. in 1959. In the same year he was appointed to the staff of the Dunn Nutritional Laboratory and three years later he became director of the M.R.C. Child Nutrition Unit in Uganda. His main research has been on the progressive effects of malnutrition on body structure and function, and this work has been applied to the development of better ways of assessing the nutritional status of children and improved methods of treatment. Centre for Individual Learning Materials in Medical Education A grant of E36,000 from the Nuffield Foundation has made it possible to establish a centre for individual learning materials in medical education. The centre is guided by an academic council under the chairmanship of Sir Brynmor Jones, chairman of the National Council for Educational Technology. The centre assists medical teachers in the design, production, and evaluation of individual study programmes. Facilities are also offered for research and training in specific aspects of the effective design and use of such materials. Funds can be made available for the secondment of academic staff to the centre. Inquiries may be directed to Charles E. Joint Consultants’ Committee Sir Kenneth Robson has been elected chairman of the Joint Consultants’ Committee in succession to Sir John Richardson. Mr. Alan Parks succeeds Sir Kenneth as joint secretary of the committee. A series of lectures forming the first part of a postgraduate course on the basic sciences of the musculoskeletal system is being held on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings (up to Dec. 16) at the Nuffield Orthopedic Centre, Oxford OX3 7LD.
