Bangkok, 20 June 2010
Dear Reader,
There has been widespread media coverage of the recent upheaval inBangkok, leading many observers to question whether it is safe to travel toThailand.
It is important to bear in mind that the demonstrations happened in a verysmall section of Bangkok, albeit a high profile area, which I happen to live in.At no time did I feel threatened or intimidated by the protestors; in fact theywent out of their way to be especially friendly to foreigners. As in anycountry where there are conflicts, common sense tells you to keep awayfrom potential flashpoints.
In our view, it is perfectly safe to visit Thailand and take advantage of thenumerous special offers being promoted to stimulate travel to this wonderfulcountry which has so many rich experiences for visitors.
As Diethelm Travel, we are committed to servicing our partners needs 24hours a day. We continue to look for innovative ways to improve our service, while remaining committed to always moving forward. Our mission is to meetand strive to exceed the expectations of our customers and partners.
Sincerely yours,
Richard R. BrouwerChief Operating OfficerDiethelm Travel Group

Bangkok, known to Thais as ―KrungThep‖ (the City of Angels) is a trulyexciting and colourful destination. This amazing city has something tooffer everyone and provides aunique experience to all who visit.Like most cities, there are severalrecommended areas to stay, but forpeace and relaxation, the riverside isthe place to be. At the heart ofhistoric Bangkok and where many ofthe magical temples and attractionsare located, you will find landmarkssuch as the Grand Palace, Temple ofthe Emerald Buddha (Wat PhraKaew) and the Temple of Dawn (WatArun) on your doorstep.
Opting for a more modern area, Sukhumvit offers upcoming and trendy places tostay. There are plenty of urbane and sophisticated bars and restaurants to keepyou entertained and what this area may lack in spiritual attractions it makes upfor in shopping and entertainment venues. Being the longest road in Thailand, there is a never ending supply of both local and cosmopolitan restaurants withsomewhere new and different to try around every corner where you will typicallymix with the new breed of fashionable (hi-so) Thais.
Hours can be spent exploring this area including alternative attractions such asthe Thailand Creative & Design Centre, Asia's first design learning and resourcefacility, established to foster the country's creativity and inspire innovative ideasamong design professionals and entrepreneurs. For a more traditional insight, visit Kamthieng House, a stilted rice farmer’s teak house transported from ChiangMai to Bangkok in 1964. With a collection of everyday agricultural and domesticitems, this depicts the traditional lives of ordinary local people. Other attractionsinclude Benjasiri Park if you’re looking for respite from a day’s shopping and forfamilies a visit to the Museum of Science & Planetarium should not be missed.
Going back to Basics
Bangkok provides some of the most amazinghistorical palaces and temples which shouldnot be missed including the unforgettableGrand Palace and Temple of Dawn (WatArun). The riverside provides much of thehistorical essence of the city and with anevening dinner cruise one can gain a trulymemorable experience.
Bangkok also has attractions to offer themore adventurous traveller and those lookingfor something a little different. One option isto take a cycling trip to the jungle area ofBang Kra Jao, located a short distance frombustling Sukhumvit. This extraordinary placecan only be reached by boat as no bridgesspan this part of the river. It is home to manylocal communities which have maintained atraditional lifestyle that can be seen firsthandon this trip.
Alternatively, just 20 kms north of the cityalong the Chao Praya River lies the island ofKoh Kret. It’s definitely another world incomparison to Bangkok despite the closevicinity and retains much of its rustic villagecharms. Here one can see the famouscraftsmanship of the local Mon people andwitness their skills in pottery. No cars areallowed on the island so this is a greatopportunity to take your time and interactwith the local villages.
For those looking for a bargain, head toPratunam, MBK, China Town, ChatuchakWeekend Market and Suan Lum Night Bazaar, which are some of the best markets availablein Bangkok. Wondering around these exoticmarkets also offers a great experience even ifyou’re not looking to purchase any goods!

Laos and neighboring heritage highlights
For those who do not like the idea of a fly and flop holiday but enjoydiscovering world heritage monuments, dramatic scenery and the lay backcafé culture of Indo-Chine, this tour will surely appeal.
Starting in Hanoi, drive to Halong Bay for an overnight boat journey in thisarea of outstanding natural beauty.
