    Passport Holder Family Size

    INTRODUCTION:

These passport holders are an organized and functional way to contain all

your important family travel documents while away or at home. There is space

for 2-4 passports, printed or regular boarding passes, 3 reward or credit cards

and a zippered pocket for money or other valuables. There is a mini pencil

pocket as well as a handy little pen loop to jot down your gate changes or write

up a luggage tag on the fly.

These passport holders make a fantastic gift for friends, family, and to sell. I

Using good quality cottons to make them allows you to use an unlimited

variety of patterns and coordinating fabric combinations for interest or to

personalize your final product. They are fairly straightforward to make as all

    the seams are straight lines.

It should take no more than 2-3 hours to make including cutting and

measuring and youll get faster with each one.

    This pattern includes:

    Materials List

    Detailed instructions in English

Clear step-by-step color photographs (I am a visual person myself and like

lots of photos to learn new projects)

Wash, Heat Dry & Iron your Fabric prior to cutting. Materials often shrink a

lot and you would hate to ruin your project before you even start!

TIP: Read instructions the entire way through prior to starting this project!

    SEWING STEPS:

    1) Gently iron all your pieces nice and flat.

    2) Cut your inner panel in half down the middle so your left piece is 10H by

5 wide and your right piece is 10H by 7 1/2 wide. This will be for your

zipper. (TIP: If there is an obvious pattern repeat, I like to keep my middle

cut edge as the two sides of the zipper. Just put a pin or a mark across the

top edge of each to keep them the same way up for ironing and sewing.)

    3) Fold the centre edge of your two inner zipper pieces over a half inch

towards the wrong side and iron to create a clean fold to attach to your

    zipper.

    4) Iron your fusible interfacing/Stiffening onto the wrong side of your outer

panel. Cut any excess stiffening off at the edges.

    5) Fold Strap Closure and right passport panel in half height wise and iron.

    6) Fold 3 Credit Card Flaps in half width wise and iron. (NOTE: They should

be 2 inches high by 4 1/4 inches wide)

  • Blissful Patterns; 2012 Passport Holder Family Size Page 6 of 17

    7) Zipper Panel: Place two zipper panels right side up on a flat surface

beside each other with folded seams in middle. Pin or baste your fabric

folds onto the edges of the zipper. Top edge of zipper should be flush to the

top of fabric to have room for seam allowance. Zipper closure should be at

top edge, not bottom. If your zipper is too long, no problem, just leave

tail end hanging for now. (TIP: I like to baste using a bright color along

the outside edge of the zipper so the thread can be easily pulled out after

    sewing)

    8) Change machine foot to zipper foot. Sew along each edge of your zipper

using a 1/8 inch seam allowance. Change machine foot back to regular.

    9) Right Passport Flap: Place zipper panel right side up on flat surface.

Place passport flap on the right side flush to the top and bottom of fabric

with fold to the middle. Pin in place.

    10) Using fabric pen and ruler, measure 4 inches up from bottom and

make a horizontal line. Measure 4 inches above that and make a second

horizontal line for your passport pockets. (NOTE, if your passport is not a

similar size as 3.5 by 5 like in Canada and 3 3/8 by 4 7/8 in USA,

  • Blissful Patterns; 2012 Passport Holder Family Size Page 8 of 17

measure the width of your passport plus 2/8s of an inch for the height of

your pockets. Then add inch to the bottom line for seam allowance)

    11) Sew across both lines starting at fold side and backstitch at the

beginning for strength. (NOTE: There will be a small slim pocket at the

top for a second pen or pencil. Golf pencils fit perfectly!)

    12) Left Boarding Pass Flap: Lay one left panel right side up on flat

surface. Place one credit card layer at bottom of flap with bottom and

edges flush. Pin across bottom. Tuck next layer underneath with inch

  • Blissful Patterns; 2012 Passport Holder Family Size Page 9 of 17

showing across top. Pin across bottom. Tuck third layer underneath with

inch showing across the top and pin across bottom. (TIP: Eyeball them

to make sure they are straight and each row is evenly spaced)

    13) Sew across bottom of top flap and bottom of second flap using a

inch seam allowance to create card pockets.

  • Blissful Patterns; 2012 Passport Holder Family Size Page 10 of 17

    14) Place this flap right side up on a flat surface. Place the other left

boarding flap right side down on top and match up edges. Pin in place.

Sew down the right side using a 1/2 inch seam allowance.

    15) Open up the seam and iron flat. Fold it wrong sides together and

iron it as flat as possible; you want the seam to appear as it if its a fold.

  • Blissful Patterns; 2012 Passport Holder Family Size Page 11 of 17

    16) Strap Closure: Fold strap closure in half with right sides together.

Sew down each short end using a inch seam allowance. Clip corners,

turn inside out and iron flat. (TIP: a knitting needle, pen or hook rug

tool work really well for clean pointy corners.)

    17) Fold ribbon in half and place about 1/3 down on non folded side

flush to the edge. This will be for your pen loop. I prefer it not in the

middle but you can put it wherever youd like. Attach it by sewing down

side using 1/8 inch seam allowance.

  • Blissful Patterns; 2012 Passport Holder Family Size Page 12 of 17

    18) Place rough half of Velcro face up on strap about 1/8 of an inch from

edge. Ensure it is centered top to bottom and hold or pin in place. (I

find pinning Velcro just bends pins so I usually just hold in place!) Sew

around the edge of the Velcro to attach it to your strap. Backstitch to

strengthen. (TIP: Most Velcro comes in white or black only so you may

want to change your top thread when sewing the Velcro)

    19) Outer Panel: Place outer panel right side up on flat surface. Place

soft Velcro on right side in centre. It should be 2 inches from top and

bottom and inner edge should be 1 3/4 inches from side edge (TIP: If

  • Blissful Patterns; 2012 Passport Holder Family Size Page 13 of 17

there is a pattern direction to your pattern, it should be upright so that

your outer flap is not upside down)

    20) Sew around the edge of the Velcro to attach it to your strap. (Your

machine should still be set up with the same color top side thread for

    Velcro.)

    21) Change top thread color back if changed for velcro.

    22) Put it all together: Place zipper panel right side up on a flat

surface. Zipper should be undone about an inch to ensure it does not get

caught. Place left card holder panel in place. Place Strap Closure on the

right side in the middle with the Velcro facing down and fold towards the

middle. Ensure it is centered top to bottom and pin in place. (Should be

1 3/4 inches from top and bottom edges). Place outer panel right side

down on top with velcro closure on left side. Ensure edges are all even

and pin all in place. (TIP: Ensure zipper opening is pulled together and

pinned at top by placing two pins vertically to ensure it does not gape

open.). Your excess zipper may be hanging out at the bottom

    23) Sew around the entire circumference of the passport holder using a

    1/2 inch seam allowance.

  • Blissful Patterns; 2012 Passport Holder Family Size Page 15 of 17

    24) Cut your corners off to reduce bulk and for clean squarish corners.

    Cut off any excess zipper.

    25) Turn inside out through the zipper hole and poke out the corners.

    Watch for pins! Iron flat.

  • Blissful Patterns; 2012 Passport Holder Family Size Page 16 of 17

    26) Fold the passport holder in half right sides together and use chalk or

fabric pen to make an approximate line down the middle on the fold. Use

a ruler to straighten it if necessary.

    27) Ensure zipper is closed and sew a straight line down the middle to

close the pocket. (seam should be about an inch to right of zipper)
