I have North Carolina Certification for grades K-6; I currently teach 5th Grade students in Wadesboro (located in Anson County). I am pursuing my AIG certification which I currently teach one course twice a week. I am also pursuing my administration licensure.
I have obtained my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Capella University. I graduated from Benedict College in May 2008 with the highest GPA of all Early Childhood Education Majors for Spring 2008. I also received a letter and certificate from ETS for scoring within the top 15% of all test-takers on the PLT examination.
I completed my previous six years of teaching with Anson County School District at Wadesboro Primary School in the second grade and Wadesboro Elementary School in the fourth and fifth grades.
A Brief Description : Professional
• I am the youngest of five children who all live in South Carolina, while I reside in North Carolina.
• I am married and a proud new mom! The first child was born prematurely on November 23, 2013: Haiyden Micah. The second child was expected November 20, but she was born November 05, 2014: Haylei Ma’Careia.
• I love to read, write, and explore technology. I love shopping and I do collect coupons!
• I value learning new things – everyday is another day to learn and grow!

What is the Governor’s Teacher Network?
• A talented group of 450 outstanding teachers were selected from 1400 applicants for 2014-15.
• Teachers identify instructional needs, create innovative digital instructional resources and design professional development to support key Race to the Top initiatives in Home Base.
• Network Teachers continue their current educator roles in their schools and districts and serve in one of two pathways.
What is theGovernor’s Teacher Network?
Pathway 1 Teachers: Professional Development • Identify problems of practice around instructional needs
and conduct action research projects in their schools.
• Investigate and analyze the effectiveness of strategies and practices on student learning.
• Create professional development sessions and materials to be posted in Schoolnet and the Professional Development System in Home Base.

My Action Research Purpose
The purpose of this study is to increase student achievement through the use of differentiated instruction and technology in a low-performing and low social-economic status school. Many students at my school are not improving academically and/or do not display the motivation to learn. This study seeks to create a conducive classroom of learning with different research based strategies that are tailored to student’s individual needs so that students can improve academically.
Differentiating the use of Chrome Books (Technology) as an Instructional Resource for Motivation and Student Achievement
• 1. What is the impact of differentiating the use of Chrome Books as an instructional resource (note-taking and electronic graphic organizers, etc. ) on student motivation, as determined by student surveys and response journals?
• 2. What is the impact of differentiating the use of Chrome Books as an instructional resource (note-taking and electronic graphic organizers, etc.) on student achievement as determined by mathematics benchmark data?
Differentiating the use of Chrome Books (Technology) as an Instructional Resource for Motivation and Student Achievement
• Participants in the study:
• Twenty-three Fifth Grade students
• All of the students receive free or reduced lunch.
• The students’ ages range from ten to eleven.
• There are nineteen African American students. There are two Caucasian students. There is one Bi-Racial student and one Hispanic student.
• There are eleven females and twelve males.
• Within the classroom, there is one student that has a 504 plan, one student with an Individualized Education Plan, or are eligible for special services in education. There is one identified student that is Academically or Intellectually Gifted.

Data Collection and Analysis Plan
Student Motivation
• A reflection journal will be kept by myself and the students within the classroom. This journal will be used to document events, feelings, observations, and questions. (reactions to using Chrome Books as an instructional resources)
• Observations will be collected from principal, parents, and colleagues
• Surveys, Questionnaires, and Discussion Posts will also be collected
Student Achievement
• Math Benchmarks fall as compared to spring
• Math pre and post tests monthly

Take notes throughout the video clip!
Research:Technology is constantly evolving and changing daily.
“Technology use in the classroom is rapidly changing how we teach, how children learn, and how school districts spend their money,” (Armstrong,
2014, p. 39).
Students are constantly exposed to technology in and out of the classroom.
Verizon Wireless completed a study in 2012 that reported more than one of three students using smartphones (39%) and tablets (31%) to do
homework. (Verizon Wireless, 2012, p. 16).
“The idea that technology is so easily accessible to most
students, educators can use it to create motivation to learn
and increase student achievement in a K-6 education institution.”

Data ResearchLittle research has been conducted to prove that implementing technology into the classroom actually improves student achievement because of the difficulty of pin-pointing just technology implementation versus delivery of instruction and other factors that may affect the lesson for students. Gosmire & Grady (2007) state, “Student achievement and technology is an urgent and compelling issue. However, student achievement is too complex to show a correlative relationship,” (p. 13). What can be proven from research is that “teachers are changing their delivery of instruction to include technology, students are more engaged, and students have a more positive attitude toward learning when technology is present,” (p. 14).
Data Research Information from Lynch, J. (2006). Assessing Effects of Technology Usage on Mathematics Learning. Mathematics Education
Research Journal, 18(3), 29-43
• Study One – No Effect
• A lottery sponsored program provided computers to primary and middle school students in Israel.
• When the test scores of those who received the computers was compared with those who did not, the study concluded that computers did not have any educational benefits.
• However, the study fails to answer crucial questions such as how and when the computers were used.
• Study Two – Positive Effect*
• A similar study was conducted that applies quantitative methods to determine the effects of classroom computer usage on mathematics learning.
• The study indicated an analysis of different types of computer usage and why they were used.
• The study reported that students who used the computers for more time, but mainly used them for drill and practice, scored below on standardized mathematics test. While students who used computers for less time on specific applications and simulations of real world problems scored above average.

Communication: Everyone had a voice. Everyone could speak and hear everyone’s voice.
Creativity: Assignments left the paper and pencil and they were based upon the needs and interests of the students.
Collaboration: Students worked together in groups and didn’t even have to speak!
Critical Thinking: No longer was the answer in the text, but students had to use everything in their toolboxes to succeed.
How Did I Differentiate?
Conclusions3/23/15This experience has allowed me to grow professionally and personally. I feel that I now more equipped to address the needs of my students using technology. When this experience began, I pre-judged the work and necessary components that I would need to actually improve student motivation and achievement. I originally thought that having computers would solve all of my problems. Once the Chrome Books were in the students hands, I realized that I must differentiate this differentiation tool to see positive results. Personally, I have gained skills to help me operate and utilize technology. Professionally, I have a toolbox full of tools that can meet the needs of students within my classroom. Just as how “one size doesn’t fit all”, one piece of technology will not solve all the problems in education. But with the combination of the right research based strategies, students will learn and grow.
