Diffutherm—Woodfibre Wall Insulation

Diffutherm Boards Are Natural Made from 99.5% waste softwood and 0.5% inert water-proofing additives Diffutherm boards are a genuinely sustainable non-toxic building material. To make Pavatex boards, waste wood fibres are pulped and mixed with water. The pulp is heated to activate the lignin they contain in order to glue the fibres together. The pulp is then pressed into boards, dried, and cut to size. Diffutherm Boards are High Performance The advanced manufacturing process uses the in-herent properties of wood fibres to produce boards with many excellent technical qualities for thermal and acoustic insulation, thermal storage capacity, vapour permeability and moisture control. Different density sheets are laminated together and the boards interlock on all edges to optimise mechanical properties, strength and stability, moisture and air resistance and render adhesion. Diffutherm is a complete system Diffutherm boards are supplied with fully compati-ble fixings, renders and accessories for all types of wall applications. The system is backed up with full design and instal-lation guidance to ensure long term durability, high performance of the building shell, health of the building and user comfort.

The Diffutherm system has many applications The system can be used for New Buildings, ap-plied directly to timber or steel stud frames and to all types of solid masonry. It can also be used for internal and external Refurbishment of exist-ing masonry and traditionally framed timber buildings. The Diffutherm system adds the effect of ther-mal mass to lightweight buildings and provides a fully “ breathable” method for up-grading solid walls. Diffutherm boards are good for the Environment The manufacture of the boards in Switzerland is carried out under tight environmental controls to minimise energy use, emissions and pollutants. The boards are made of waste wood and lock up CO2 in their production. Substituting Diffutherm for common synthetic boards provides even more benefits for the health of the environment, buildings and their occupants.

The Diffutherm System is • Complete and fully integrated • Tested, certified, and proven in practice • Quick and simple to install • Cost efficient • High performance • Multi-functional • Environmentally Sound

Diffutherm—Performance Guide

A modern wall insulation system must do more than just protect building occupants from cold. It must create a comfortable and healthy environment for the building users in all possible combinations of ex-ternal and internal conditions and control the effects of external heat, cold, noise and internal moisture generation. The Diffutherm System…..

Keeps the building warmer for longer in cold weather. Low thermal conductivity and high vapour permeability provide high thermal insulation with no risk of interstitial condensa-tion. Vapour control membranes are unnecessary. When applied externally onto masonry walls, the masonry stays warm and dry, so enhancing its thermal storage capacity. When used on studwork the boards reduce the effect of ther-mal bridging and the interlocking board design easily achieves good air-tightness so increasing thermal performance. Energy use for heating is significantly reduced leading to lower CO2 emissions and running costs.

Keeps the building cooler in hot weather. The unique combination of high density, high specific heat ca-pacity and low thermal conductivity gives lightweight framed constructions the effect of thermal mass that would normally be associated with masonry. Compared to conventional framed constructions Diffutherm systems can keep the internal tem-perature up to 4ºC cooler over the course of a hot day. Used externally, Diffutherm slows the transmission of outside temperature extremes to the inside of the building (expressed as decrement delay). The outside daytime temperature peak is delayed in reaching the inside spaces for up to 14 hours when it will reduce the need for additional heating during evening time. Used internally the high thermal storage capacity of the boards allows excess heat to absorbed so improves internal comfort. Diffutherm moderates temperature variations inside the building and greatly improves the comfort of the occupants while reducing the need for extra cooling and ventilation.

Keeps internal humidity stable. When applied to internal wall surfaces, the hygroscopic na-ture of Diffutherm in combination with NBT mineral and clay plasters allows rapid absorption of moisture when inter-nal humidity is high, for example during cooking, washing and drying clothes. The moisture can in turn be released quickly when internal conditions are drier. This effect is important for good health and comfort of the occupants and prevents the growth of moulds, fungi, and dust mites.

Page 4: Diffutherm - ourbarn.co.uk · Diffutherm—Performance Guide A modern wall insulation system must do more than just protect building occupants from cold. It must create a comfortable

Diffutherm—Performance Guide

Keeps the building fabric dry. Diffutherm is very vapour permeable and hygroscopic. This allows it to disperse short term moisture accumulating and protect vulnerable elements of the building fabric, with no reduction in the performance of the boards themselves. When used externally Diffutherm allows moisture from within the structure to pass easily to the outside. This pro-vides a safeguard against high moisture which cause decay in timber structures, ensures that masonry structures re-main dry so improving their thermal performance and pre-vents mould growth within fabric of inner face. When applied directly to the inside face of traditional frame timbers and solid wall masonry buildings the hygro-scopic nature of Diffutherm eliminates risks from interstitial condensation and controls the moisture content of any em-bedded timber, e.g. floor and ceiling joists, to below 19%. This is vital for the long-term health of the building fabric, and is completely overlooked by most conventional dry-lining and internal insulation systems.

Keeps the building quieter. The high mass, and fibrous texture of Diffutherm combined with the different density of the board layers gives excel-lent acoustic performance. Diffutherm gives by far the best results for noise absorption and reducing airborne and im-pact noise transmission over all frequencies compared with all other insulation boards. This gives mass performance to light-weight buildings and eliminates flanking sound prob-lems are when insulating solid masonry.

Keeps its integrity in fire. Diffutherm is timber and, in common with other timber products, the boards char when exposed to fire to form an insulating layer which slows down the progress of the flames. In combination with the NBT mineral renders the Diffutherm system has over 30 minutes resistance to penetration by fire.

Is an environmental benefit Diffutherm is fully certified under Natur Plus, (the environmental standard set up by the WWF) and the wood waste raw material is from FSC certified sources. The fuel used in the factories is mainly waste animal fats, and the boards lock up 1.2 tonnes of CO2 (from the wood waste) for every tonne of product produced. After accounting for manufacturing emissions there is still a net positive CO2 balance of approximately 600kg per tonne of product. When substituted for more common synthetic products the boards provide an even better environmental balance. By improving building performance they enhance the health of the environment, buildings and their occupants.

Boards and Renders

Do not use Diffutherm boards below DPC level. Use

boards suitable for wet exposure (EPS, XPS) in the

plinth area (ie. within 0.15m of Ground Level). Refer to

Detail 4.

For air and wind-tightness seal the boards against the

structure at all joints, intersections, openings and

penetrations and along all edges using Compriband

strip.

For weather-tightness, seal the render around all

openings using the appropriate APU strips (Details 2, 3

and 5).

Light coloured finishes (light intensity > 40%) and

coarse-grained finishes (2-5mm grain sizes) are

preferred for long-term durability and appearance.

Cracking of the render system cannot be completely

avoided. Minor cracking is not detrimental to the

system and the board will not deteriorate if the cracks

are small and repaired quickly.

Apply equalisation paint to the finish render coat to

avoid discolouration from uneven drying.

To select paints for applying to the finished surface

without significantly reduction of the vapour

permeability of the Diffutherm System, refer to NBT.

General

The Diffutherm System is certified for use in rain

Exposure Zones 1, 2 and 3 (described in BS 8104 and

the BRE report “Thermal Insulation, avoiding risks”).

If intended for use in Exposure Zone 4, contact NBT

for advice.

The Diffutherm System is certified for use in buildings

where the height to the top floor is < 8m.

If intended for use in higher buildings, contact NBT for

advice.

The Diffutherm System must be designed so that no

loads from the structure are carried by the boards or

render.

Design a positive strategy for avoiding rain

penetration of the EWI system. This will include :

generous overhangs for roofs, cills and copings (in no

case < 30mm)

drip details on all overhangs

careful detailing of flashings at critical areas eg.

balconies, decks, walkways, parapets, copings,

service penetrations, roof abutments, intersecting

and adjoining buildings, etc.

window and door frames set back from the external

face of the wall by at least the thickness of the

insulation boards.

Carefully detail the OSB layer for air-tightness at all

openings and at internal corners and junctions.

Carefully detail the Diffutherm layer for wind-

tightness at all openings and in the plinth area.

Movement joints in the substrate must be

incorporated into the Diffutherm EWI System.

Consider movement joints for walls longer than 18m.

Only lightweight fittings can be attached directly to

the Diffutherm boards. Carefully plan the location of

down-pipes, lights, security systems etc. and attach

using fixing disks screwed directly to the structure.

Contact NBT for further advice on fixings.

Provide the Contractor with full and complete details

for all critical areas of the system including those

listed above leave nothing 'to be agreed on site'

The system can only be guaranteed if only the

boards, mortars, renders and accessories approved

by NBT are used.

Renders

Do not apply the render system onto rain-soaked

boards or when the air temperature is below 5C and

avoid working in strong, direct sunlight.

The reinforcing mesh sheets should lie in the outer 1/3

of the basecoat layer and sheets should overlap by

at least 100mm.

Additional mesh reinforcement is required around all

openings, along all corners and edges, across zones

where suspended floors intersect walls and where

boards are applied over different substrates, along

continuous straight board joints and over repaired

areas.

Seal the render around all openings using the

appropriate APU strips (Details 2, 3 and 5).

Allow 1 day/mm thickness drying time for the

basecoat before applying the topcoat.

Apply equalisation paint to the finish render coat to

avoid discolouration from uneven drying.

Cracking of the render system cannot be completely

avoided. Minor cracking is not detrimental to the

system and the board will not deteriorate if the cracks

are small and repaired quickly.

General

The Diffutherm System must only be installed by

approved contractors who have been trained by NBT.

The details and specifications in this guide and from

the Designer should be followed as the basis of a

successful installation.

The system can be guaranteed only if the boards,

mortars, renders and accessories approved by NBT

are used in the proper specified manner.

Masonry substrates must be sound, compatible with

the bonding mortar and mechanical anchors, flat

(dubbed out if necessary to avoid excessive thickness

of the meshed render), free of loose material and

problems associated with damp or structural

movement.

Timber frames must not be excessively wet when the

boards are applied to avoid trapping moisture within

the construction.

Movement joints in the substrate must be

incorporated into the Diffutherm System.

Only lightweight fittings can be attached directly to

the Diffutherm boards. Carefully plan the location of

down-pipes, lights, security systems etc. and attach

using fixing disks screwed directly to the structure.

Contact NBT for further advice on fixings.

An additional band of mesh should be applied across the zone where

suspended floor joists bear onto the timber fram e walls.

6

Set out Diffutherm Boards so that board edges

DO NOT coincide with the corners of wall

openings.

Always ensure that the vertical joints are

staggered by at least 200mm between

courses and that each board is supported on

at least 2 studs.

Board joints DO NOT have to terminate on a

stud due to the tongue groove board edge.

Diffutherm Boards

Locate the 1 course of Diffutherm boards tightly in the base rail channel with grooved side down and edge t & g joints

fully engaged. Fix through the boards into the studs using 3 fixing / board / stud. Boards must span at least 2 studs. Board

edges need not coincide with stud positions, which should be at < 600mm centres. The faces of the boards should be

flush. Stagger fixings where board edges coincide with a stud position.

Install 2 course in ½ bond pattern, over-lapping board ends at vertical corners, ensuring all board joints are fully

engaged and tightly packed. Fix to studs as for 1 course.

Apu rails

Apply Apu rails to door and window frames to form a

wind and waterproof expansion joint. The Apu rail has

a sticky foam backing which adheres to the frame.

This prevents thermal bridging. A stiff protection strip

with a sticky surface allows enables polythene or

paper to be attached to protect the window or door.

This strip is peeled away on completion of rendering

leaving a clean neat finish.

Board fixings for Timber substrates

Termofix 6H, screw fix, suitable for: wood and chipboard.

Advantages

Ready assembled

Low k-value

Slim shaft avoids stress in reinforcing grid

Flexible head for stress compensation

Highly corrosion-resistant screw

Description

The FISCHER Termofix 6H is a ready-assembled screw fixing for fastening Diffutherm to timber substrates.

The screw is protected against corrosion. The flexible head of the Termofix 6H compensates for changes

in length caused by variations in warmth in the render façade, thereby reducing the formation of cracks.

The air column which is created between the countersunk screw and the plug, ensures perfect insulation.

This gives the Termofix 6H its extremely low k-value. Heat loss through conduction is therefore substantially

reduced.

Boards and Renders

Do not use Diffutherm boards below DPC level. Use

boards suitable for wet exposure (EPS, XPS) in the

plinth area (ie. within 0.15m of Ground Level). Refer to

Detail 4.

For air and wind-tightness seal the boards against the

structure at all joints, intersections, openings and

penetrations and along all edges using Compriband

strip.

For weather-tightness, seal the render around all

openings using the appropriate APU strips (Details 2, 3

and 5).

Light coloured finishes (light intensity > 40%) and

coarse-grained finishes (2-5mm grain sizes) are

preferred for long-term durability and appearance.

Cracking of the render system cannot be completely

avoided. Minor cracking is not detrimental to the

system and the board will not deteriorate if the cracks

are small and repaired quickly.

Apply equalisation paint to the finish render coat to

avoid discolouration from uneven drying.

To select paints for applying to the finished surface

without significantly reduction of the vapour

permeability of the Diffutherm System, refer to NBT.

General

The Diffutherm System is certified for use in rain

Exposure Zones 1, 2 and 3 (described in BS 8104 and

the BRE report “Thermal Insulation, avoiding risks”).

If intended for use in Exposure Zone 4, contact NBT

for advice.

The Diffutherm System is certified for use in buildings

where the height to the top floor is < 8m.

If intended for use in higher buildings, contact NBT for

advice.

The Diffutherm System must be designed so that no

loads from the structure are carried by the boards or

render.

Design a positive strategy for avoiding rain

penetration of the EWI system. This will include :

generous overhangs for roofs, cills and copings (in no

case < 30mm) drip details on all overhangs

careful detailing of flashings at critical areas eg.

balconies, decks, walkways, parapets, copings,

service penetrations, roof abutments, intersecting

and adjoining buildings, etc.

window and door frames set back from the external

face of the wall by at least the thickness of the

insulation boards.

Carefully detail the Diffutherm layer for wind-

tightness at all openings and in the plinth area.

Movement joints in the substrate must be

incorporated into the Diffutherm EWI System.

Consider movement joints for walls longer than 18m.

Only lightweight fittings can be attached directly to

the Diffutherm boards. Carefully plan the location of

down-pipes, lights, security systems etc. and attach

using fixing disks screwed directly to the structure.

Contact NBT for further advice on fixings.

Provide the Contractor with full and complete details

for all critical areas of the system including those

listed above leave nothing 'to be agreed on site'

The system can only be guaranteed if only the

boards, mortars, renders and accessories approved

by NBT are used.

Renders

Do not apply the render system onto rain-soaked

boards or when the air temperature is below 5C and

avoid working in strong, direct sunlight.

The reinforcing mesh sheets should lie in the outer 1/3

of the basecoat layer and sheets should overlap by

at least 100mm.

Additional mesh reinforcement is required around all

openings, along all corners and edges, across zones

where suspended floors intersect walls and where

boards are applied over different substrates, along

continuous straight board joints and over repaired

areas.

Seal the render around all openings using the

appropriate APU strips (Details 2, 3 and 5).

Allow 1 day/mm thickness drying time for the

basecoat before applying the topcoat.

Apply equalisation paint to the finish render coat to

avoid discolouration from uneven drying.

Cracking of the render system cannot be completely

avoided. Minor cracking is not detrimental to the

system and the board will not deteriorate if the cracks

are small and repaired quickly.

General

The Diffutherm System must only be installed by

approved contractors who have been trained by NBT.

The details and specifications in this guide and from

the Designer should be followed as the basis of a

successful installation.

The system can be guaranteed only if the boards,

mortars, renders and accessories approved by NBT

are used in the proper specified manner.

Masonry substrates must be sound, compatible with

the bonding mortar and mechanical anchors, flat

(dubbed out if necessary to avoid excessive thickness

of the meshed render), free of loose material and

problems associated with damp or structural

movement.

Movement joints in the substrate must be

incorporated into the Diffutherm System.

Only lightweight fittings can be attached directly to

the Diffutherm boards. Carefully plan the location of

down-pipes, lights, security systems etc. and attach

using fixing disks screwed directly to the structure.

Contact NBT for further advice on fixings.

Boards

Plan board layout to reduce wastage prior to

commencing installation.

A base rail must be used to start the system. (Detail 4)

Minimum bond overlap is 200mm between courses.

Boards must not be wet or damaged and board

edges must be tightly butted together.

Tightly pack all gaps between boards with woodfibre.

Seal the boards against the structure around all

openings and penetrations and along all edges

using Compriband strip.

Do not use the Diffutherm EWI system below the DPC

level. (Detail 4)

Use appropriate boards (EPS, XPS) in the plinth area

(ie. within 0.15m above Ground Level) (Detail 4)

Do not allow the boards to stand exposed to weather

for more than 60 days after fixing before applying

the render system.

Installation Procedure

The substrate should be dry, clean and flat. Do not apply the Diffutherm System in ambient temperatures below 5 C°

Base Rail

Above Plinth Area :

Fix the base rail and corner rail above DPC to each

stud packed to true line and level, using 1 fixing per

stud. Rail connector clips should be fitted at all rail

joints.

Attach clip on drip profile to entire run of base and

corner rail.

Installation Procedure (1)EWI onto Masonry

Compri-band

Where boards butt up to other substrates a Compri-

band sealing strip should be inserted to allow for

differential movement and provide a weather tight

seal. Such areas include window and door frames, sills,

eaves and soffit boards.

Installation Procedure

Additional Meshing

Trowel 2mm of MC55W diagonally onto the corner

faces of all openings and smooth in strips of mesh

(25x50mm).

Trowel MC55W onto all corners and reveals and set

fibreglass mesh beads into the mortar, plumb and in

alignment, to a render depth of 5-8mm.

Installation Procedure (2)EWI onto Masonry

Render System

Trowel or machine-apply MC55W over the boards and straighten out the render. Using a tooth trowel comb through

the render to ensure an overall render depth of 4-6mm.

Place sheets of fibreglass mesh lightly onto the render, with overlaps not less than 100mm.

On stiffening apply another coat of MC55W 2-3mm thick and smooth out. On hardening rough up the surface using

the edge of a trowel.

After six days apply a decorative finish coat

or

Oversills

Oversills should be fitted using one of the options

shown above prior to rendering. Apply a Compr-

band between the lower face of the sill and the

upper edge of the Diffutherm to form a weather tight

seal.

A minimum overhang distance of 30mm from front

of sill to render face should be maintained at all

times.

Movement Beads

Where structural movement

joints or changes in substrate

occur a movement bead

should be incorporated into

the Diffutherm system to

prevent cracking due to

differential movement.

Reveals

Fully paste the rear side of the reveal boards using

MC55W and trowel through using a tooth trowel.

Apply a compri-band along the edge of the board

and place the board tightly up against the window or

door frame.

Set out Diffutherm Boards so that board edges

DO NOT coincide with the corners of wall

openings.

Always ensure that the vertical joints are

staggered by at least 200mm between

courses and that each board is supported on

at least 2 studs.

Board joints DO NOT have to terminate on a

stud due to the tongue groove board edge.

Description

TThe fischer Termofix fixing is a ready-assembled hammerset fixing for fastening Diffutherm insulation systems

to masonry backgrounds. The flexible head compensates for any change in length caused by heat in the

plaster façade. This reduces the formation of cracks caused by stresses in the façade. The slim shaft prevents

crushing of the reinforcing grid, which remains in its original position in the plaster.

The special plug countersinks the nail into the shaft when it is knocked into position. This makes the

conduction of heat virtually impossible, thereby achieving a low k-value. The impact lock prevents premature

expansion of the fixing when it is knocked in.
