POLICIES, PRACTICES, PROCEDURES

POLICIES: principles, rules, and guidelines formulated or adopted by an

organization to reach its long-term goals and typically published in a form that is widely accessible.

PROCEDURES: Procedures are the specific methods employed to

express policies in action in day-to-day operations of the organization

- Policies and procedures are designed to influence and determine all

major decisions and actions, and all activities take place within the boundaries set by them.

PRACTICES: a method or technique that has been generally accepted as

superior to any alternatives because it produces results that are superior to those achieved by other means or because it has become a standard way of doing things

When determining membership policies and pricing/payment strategies, does your Y consider community demographics and trends – and what role do you have in ensuring equity in these decisions? (i.e. cash payments, flexible intake, definitions of family, etc.)

What process does your Association have to ensure community is engaged throughout the process of program identification, design, implementation, and assessment?

When developing budgets, are Financial Officers providing a lens to pay equity across multiple dimensions of diversity – including gender, race and sexual orientation (historically all under-paid), as well as departments?

What policies or practices are currently in place at your Y to ensure partnerships and collaborations are aligned to promote greater inclusion and equity for all – and to what degree are these equity outcomes understood by targeted community partners?

How does your Y include DIG in the case for philanthropic support and volunteer engagement efforts? Through our own biases, do we dismiss certain communities as ‘financial liabilities’ and/or low prospects for philanthropic opportunities thereby limiting engagement?

How does your YMCA elevate DIG within its internal and external branding efforts to create balance in driving cause-messaging (in addition to being revenue-focused)? Consider equity of resourcing and access to all communities, especially the underserved.

DIG GUIDING PRINCIPLES TO SERVE ALL

To deliver on our cause to strengthen community, all segments of society must

have access to the Y. As neighborhoods change, societal perspectives and

attitudes evolve, and communities become more globalized, applying a DIG lens to

Y work is essential to better understand, engage, advocate for, and serve all

people. To advance social equity and create a safe, welcoming space for all:

• Lead with empathy in all interactions and activities

• Recognize, value and embrace all dimensions of diversity and work

towards the greatest possible inclusion for all
