ALLAN HARRISARTURO O’FARRILL
ALEXA TARANTINO
3
THIS YEAR WAS GOING TO BE Abig one for the Grammy Award-win-
ning pianist, composer, arranger, band-leader and educator Arturo O'Farrill, thefounder and artistic director of the 18-pieceAfro-Latin Jazz Orchestra (ALJO). He hadsome important festival gigs lined up, sev-eral commissions, plus a rigorous, bicoastal teaching schedule with theManhattan School of Music and UCLA'sGlobal Jazz Studies Program.
He also recently released a new ALJOCD, Four Questions, a compelling and com-prehensive eight-track tour de force, fea-turing Arturo's swinging modern jazzarrangements, propelled by Pan-Americanand African rhythms, and an evocativevocal chorus. The album also features thefiery oratory of writer, educator andphilosopher Cornel West, reading and riff-ing on four questions posed by the tower-ing African-American author, intellectualand social scientist W.E.B. Du Bois in hisepic 1903 book, The Souls of Black Folk:What does integrity do in the face of adver-sity? What does honesty do in the face oflies? What does decency do in the face ofinsult? How does virtue meet force?
Then the pandemic came, and the rest, unfortunately, was not history.
"I lost a ton of work," Arturo laments. "Iwas supposed to play the Newport JazzFestival and the Rochester Jazz Festivalthis year. I had two world premieres, oneat the Miller Theater at ColumbiaUniversity and at the Joyce Theater withthe Cuban Ballet Company. I had a filmpremiere for the documentary that wasmade about the Fandango Project that werecorded at the border of Mexico and theUnited States. And I was so looking for-ward to doing one of the greatest concertsof my life: a Carla Bley concert at TownHall, a [tribute] to one of my greatestheroes."
Arturo, a passionate and articulatethinker and commentator on musical andsocial matters, went into action. With hisown money and financial contributionsfrom others, he created the Afro-Latin JazzAlliance Emergency Fund, just days afterthe pandemic hit the U.S. Named for theumbrella organization that includes theALJO, the Alliance is a New York-basednonprofit organization "dedicated to pre-serving the music and heritage of big bandLatin jazz through performance and edu-cation." Arturo raised more than $50,000for over 150 musicians. "We've been reallylucky to extend our hands, to help people,"he says.

Though the bandleader definitely lostout on major work during this worldwidecrisis, he is fortunate to continue to findgigs. A long-time fixture at New York'sfamed Birdland club, Arturo producesVirtual Birdland, a weekly Internet broad-cast that "takes five days of recording arhythm section, recording horns, recordingsoloists, video editing and sound mixing,"he explains. The series celebrated the cen-tennial of Charlie Parker's birth with aperformance of the renowned Afro-CubanJazz Suite, composed and recorded byArturo's father, the great Cuban band-leader and composer Chico O'Farrill. Thecritically acclaimed alto saxophonistRudresh Mahanthappa reprises Parker'srole as the lead soloist on the originalrecording.
"Every week, we produce new materialfor this series," Arturo says. "I have to say,in view of this horrendous murder ofGeorge Floyd, and the tremendous painthis nation has been going through, it wasa difficult decision [to go through with thebroadcast]. But I decided that musiciansmake music: That's how we help heal theplanet. So this is not just a gig, or a cele-bration of mambo. It's really an attempt tostand strong, in the face of an extraordinar-ily scary and depressing time in history."
With the need for families to shelter inplace in recent months, Arturo moved hiswife (pianist Alison) and two sons (drum-mer Zachary and trumpeter Adam) fromBrooklyn to live with him in Los Angeles, where he has been staying since the virushit. "In this pandemic, my son [Adam] andI rubbed each other the wrong way a lot,"he notes with a laugh. "But we establishedthis beautiful bond, of looking at each, andforgiving each other, and understandingeach other. And I think we caught that onone of our livestreams at the GreeneSpace: 'Adam and Arturo O'Farrill Live.'

FOR MORE THAN THREE MONTHS,a joyous event has occurred every
Sunday evening, as saxophonist andflautist Alexa Tarantino and pianistSteven Feifke offer a weekly webcast per-formance, via the Crowdcast platform.Mixing preshow discussions with a warm-ly presented recital, the duo has coveredmaterial from original compositions to fanfavorites like the Thelonious Monk song-book or the works of Miles Davis. Anyonetuning in might hear tunes drawn fromAlexa's latest album, Clarity (an essentialnew quartet record released in June),along with audience requests that help todetermine forthcoming shows, including acelebration of Frank Sinatra.
For Alexa, the decision to start stream-ing concerts developed earlier this year, asa tour was winding down. "I was on theroad with Cécile McLorin Salvant inOakland, and at that point we didn't reallyknow what to expect," she recalls. "But onthe road, we were talking about how larg-er orchestras in Europe were doing livestreams from empty halls. When I camehome, Steven and I decided to start per-forming right away." Premiering March15, the first concert offered a wonderfulmix of material, with a warm and invitingpresentation that set the tone for the run.Indeed, as the series has progressed, Alexaand Steven have refined the presentationmodel, consistently delivering some oftheir finest playing in a beautifully inti-mate setting. As much as we all miss clubsand concert halls, these duo shows manageto offer a closeness between artist andaudience that even the coziest venue can-not deliver.
The initial concert also set a precedentfor the pair, harnessing the events to helpraise funds in support of social good. Whilethe original streams focused on aid formusicians, dedicating 25 percent of the

proceeds to organizations like the NewYork Foundation for the Arts and the JazzFoundation of America, later concerts havedirected funds to organizations includingthe NAACP and the Grassroots LawProject. "Neither of us had looked at this asa money-making venture," Alexa explains."It's been an amazing opportunity to giveback."
Her online voice has expanded furtherin recent weeks, as an ongoing relationshipwith Jazz at Lincoln Center has yielded asecond platform, focusing on artist devel-opment and education. The collaboration'soutput, "The Well-Rounded Musician," is aweekly Thursday webcast during whichAlexa discusses aspects of building a life inmusic. "I've felt there is a lack of informa-tion for students wanting to set them-selves up for success in their careers," shenotes. "So I wanted to use the platform tooffer a self-motivated, entrepreneurialeducation."
"The Well-Rounded Musician" hasindeed delivered on providing entrepre-neurial training, drawing on Alexa's owneducation at Eastman and at Juilliard aswell as skills honed on the job via profes-sional work. Webcast episodes include dis-cussions on often nonmusical but still cru-cial topics like developing press kits, hon-ing public-speaking skills, establishing aweb presence and more. "While the musicalways comes first, if you don't have thesepieces together, you might not be the first-call for the gig," Alexa points out. The con-tent on offer appears to have found anaudience: With viewers tuning in fromaround the world, the webcasts have notonly served to connect viewers with impor-tant educational content, they have alsohelped instill a broader sense of community.
In the midst of the COVID-19 epidemic,Alexa's work has served as a truly welcomeand deeply needed respite, and upcomingprojects of hers like an online summercamp will offer even more touchpoints withthe performance and educational commu-nities. The uncertainty of the immediatefuture of the performing arts poses anundeniable hardship and strain on everymember of the industry. To see an artistadapt to the current environment anddeliver such much-needed performanceand teaching work is an inspiration formany.
Catch Alexa Tarantino & StevenFeifke every Sunday for a preconcertconversation at 7 p.m. and a perform-ance at 8 p.m. on www.crowdcast.io/.You also can hear her every Thursdayat 9:30 p.m. when she presents the"The Well-Rounded Musician withAlexa Tarantino" series at www.facebook.com/jazzatlincolncenter. THE GALE-FORCE WINDS OFchange we've experienced in recent
months have triggered a period of intro-spection and re-evaluation for singer, com-poser, actor, and guitarist Allan Harris."I've been spending a lot of time with mymusic and myself. I haven't been alone inmy mind for quite a while. I'm not as excit-ing as I thought I was, I'm not that spe-cial," he muses, a dubious claim in light ofthe many and varied projects he has in theworks.
Describing himself as his "own worstcritic," Allan has been rethinking his per-forming technique, reevaluating how heuses space on stage, how he tells stories, how he relies on the band. "It's an egobreaker, but it's good. I think I'm growing."
His increasing social media presenceduring the pandemic has been at least apartial motivator for Allan's stepped-upself-improvement regimen. Since March,he has been livestreaming "Harlem AfterDark, Unplugged with Allan Harris" twiceweekly, and also has appeared on "BlueNote at Home" and other streams. "Weneed music more than ever now," he noteson his FB timeline.
"Being a personality on camera is a lotdifferent from being onstage, where youcan pick up nuances in the audienceresponse," Allan points out. "You can seethem smiling, clapping, notice lovers look-ing at each other during a ballad.Streaming from my man cave, I have toimagine what the listener is doing. Now Ihave to go inside myself to find my brava-do. It's hard for a performer to beunabashed without an audience. I'm feel-

ing my way, writing out scripts, putting setlists together."
Once a week Allan takes a solo turn on"Harlem After Dark," just the man and hisguitar, delving into a vast and variedrepertoire encompassing Billy Strayhorn,Charlie Pride, Duke Ellington, MarvinGaye and his own compositions. Othertimes, he's joined at home by musicianssuch as bassist Marty Kenney and pianistArcoiris Sandoval.
Drummer and percussionist ShirazetteTinnin has also been on hand, as on thespecial Juneteenth presentation, whenAllan debuted a song he's written in thewake of George Floyd's murder. Thestream included saying the names of vic-tims of police brutality; readings fromHarriet Tubman, James Baldwin, MarianAnderson, and Abraham Lincoln, amongothers; and a tender rendering ofEllington's "Come Sunday."
On the Juneteenth stream, "Terror inAmerica is going to end in my generation,"declared Allan, who has raised money forBlack Lives Matter on a previous stream. In a recent phone interview, he attributedhis optimism to the throngs of youngerpeople of all races and backgrounds whohave taken to the streets and to socialmedia to show their support for equalityand justice. "There's a mood happening, inthis country and in this world, that's won-derful and transcends racism. The youngpeople are coming together, they're doing iton their own without anger and bitter-ness."
He continues, "They know we're in thesame boat together, that we can rowtogether, and that lets us move in thedirection we want to move in."
Allan enjoys playing and spending timewith younger people, relating to theirenthusiasm and joy as they discoverartists, activists and authors from previousgenerations, such as Nikki Giovanni, MayaAngelou and Ralph Ellison. "The youngpeople are going full force now. They're likea sponge, they squeeze out that water ofwisdom and are very inclusive," he says."They know their music, but they alsoknow ours." Allan recently created aSpotify playlist, "Power to the People,"comprising the likes of Bob Dylan, GilScott-Heron, Bob Marley, Sam Cooke andNina Simone, to share some of the musiche considers influential.
He's also happy to learn from hisyounger friends, colleagues and associates."I had a hard time getting into theirmusic," Allan admits, "but I'm getting intoit now, and it's opening new avenues in mymind and in the melodies. Music reflectsthe times, and I'm going through mydiscography with that in mind. I'm puttinga twist on my own songs to make themmore inclusive, so they're not based on a

certain period but on the era we're intoday."
As New York eases into reopening,Allan continues to work on new projectsand revisit some existing ones with hiswife and creative partner, Pat Harris. Thepair is writing a novel based on their stageplay, Cross That River, fleshing out char-acters and storylines to present a broaderpicture of the West after the Civil War.The play has been mounted several times, including an off-Broadway run in 2007;keep an eye out for 2021 productions.
The twosome is also developing a seriesof intimate gigs in various cities spotlight-ing local artists, which will be videoed forbroadcast or streaming. And the new yearwill bring a new Allan Harris album,Kate's Soulfood, which was originally slat-ed to drop this summer.
These turbulent times have brought toAllan's mind words of comfort and encour-agement he often heard from his motherand aunts while growing up. "Everything

Contributing PhotographerMy camera and I have spent way too many daysand nights at home, since all jazz venues shutdown in March. Since then, I've searching in myfiles for photos that mean a lot to me and, I hope,to you. This year has been particularly difficult for the jazzcommunity, with the loss of live venues and also ofsome of our favorite musicians. Here, two giantswho left us in 2020—drummer Jimmy Cobb andpianist Harold Mabern—consult before their lastjoint gig at Smoke Jazz & Supper Club. RIP, fellas. It won't be the same without you.

Eli Dimeff played with the bands of Si Zentner and Buddy Morrow, among others. Whenhe decided to leave the music business, he found a job at the Belmont Plaza Hotel. He noticedthat many racing fans filled the hotel during the Belmont Stakes, and he proposed that thehotel restaurant offer an item on the menu called the Belmont Steak Special. The idea wasso successful that Eli was promoted to assistant manager, got a raise in pay, got week-endsoff, and a free meal in the restaurant every evening. But he was told he could order anythingbut steaks or chops, and so he never got to enjoy the Belmont Steak Special.
Jim Collier was in Moscow some years back on a writing job, and was hanging out withsome Russian jazz guys—musicians, critics, etc. One of them said, "Jeem, you look like ZootSeems." Jim was surprised and said, "Really?" The guy then said, "All Americans look likeZoot Seems."

Arturo found common ground and newmusical inspiration playing with his sonthrough this sad and painful time in aworld ravaged by disease and racism. Hehopes that the jazz community—which hesees as a stratified binary between "tradi-tionalists and modernists"—will form amore diversified and integrated union, inspired by the multiracial protests led bythe Black Lives Matter movement, whichare unifying people around the planet.
"I think that jazz musicians are going tohave to take a long, hard look at how wealign ourselves," Arturo muses. "If we don'tthink of ourselves as part of each other'slife and a part of each other's music, thenwe haven't learned the lessons. I'd like tosee a lot more cross-pollination betweenthe worlds of jazz. That's what I hopewould happen."
