The plight of cancer
sufferers in her parish has
prompted a new Honorary
Clerical Canon of Southwell
Minster to shave her head.
The Revd Barbara Holbrook, who
will take up the cathedral stall of
Dunham at the Installation
Service on 3rd November, is
hoping to raise money for
Maggie’s Centre at the City
Hospital by shaving her head in
the Minster as an act of solidarity
with parishioners in Nuthall and
Kimberley who have been
affected by cancer. She will
succeed the Revd Keith Turner.
Also elected as an Honorary
Clerical Canon is Rector of St
Nic’s Church, Nottingham, the
Revd Steve Silvester, who is
Chaplain to Nottingham Forest.
He will take the stall of Norwell
Palishall, succeeding the Revd
Jerry Lepine, who is now Dean of
Bradford.
Steve Silvester has been Rector
of St Nic's, Nottingham since
2008, a vibrant city centre
church, and has been Chaplain to
Nottingham Forest Football Club
since 2009.
Three Lay Canons will also be
installed in the extended service
at 3.30pm in Southwell Minster.
Chief Executive for the Diocese
of Southwell & Nottingham and
former Diocesan Secretary for the
Diocese of Manchester, Nigel
Spraggins has a wide range of
experience in both local
government, commercial and
business management. He will
take the Beauvale stall, replacing
Carole Park, Diocesan HR and
Funding Director.
Pam Bishop is currently Chair of
Diocesan House of Laity, and sits
on Bishop’s Council. From 2010
she has served on General Synod
and is also Lay Chair of
Mansfield Deanery. She replaces
Christina Baxter in the Lenton
Stall.
John Loughton was born and
grew up in Southwell, attended
the Minster Grammar School and
was Head Boy in 1968. He will
replace retired Diocesan
Registrar, Chris Hodson in the
Rufford stall.

The BibleWhen screened in the USA earlier this year 100 million people
watched this 10 hour dramatic presentation of the Bible. Yes it does
go from Genesis to Revelation.
Channel 5 will be screening this probably in early December, and
possibly as 5 x 2 hour episodes all in one week. They have yet to
decide exactly how or when.
The DVD will be released next year.
Damaris Trust, working with others like Bible Society and Scripture
Union, are producing an App with ideas of how churches might use
this broadcasting opportunity. So why not think ahead – and be ready
to respond rapidly when the broadcasting schedules are known.
2014 – 100 years since the start of World War 1There are plans for major national acts of Remembrance around
World War I throughout 2014-18. They will begin on August 4th the
day Britain declared war on Germany. It is hoped to mark this as a
Day of Prayer with possibly every church offering ways for people to
pray.
So why not begin thinking now about how you would do this. Then
study your War Memorials and consider which other dates it might be
worth your church considering a memorial event. Were a large
number from your community killed at Marne, Ypres, Loos, Verdun,
Jutland, Somme?
In Nottinghamshire we also have four ‘Thankful Villages’ where no
one was lost in WWI; Cromwell, Wigsley, Wysall and Maplebeck.
They will have a different way of remembering.
The tone is not celebration but commemoration and memorial.
As part of this the Government is making funds available to every
school to arrange visits to WWI sites in Europe. Perhaps every church
could offer to help with such visits.

Two Opportunities for Creative
EvangelismThe Rt Revd Paul Butler, Bishop
of Southwell & Nottingham has
announced the appointment of a
new Area Dean of Nottingham
South. He said: “I am glad to be
able to inform you that Revd
Karen Rooms has accepted my
invitation to be Area Dean of
Nottingham South, taking over
this role from the Revd Jonathan
MacGillivray. Her period of
office commenced on 25th
September 2013 for three years.”
Karen responded: “It is a great
privilege to be asked to be an
Area Dean serving in this
wonderful and challenging city. I
am looking forward to working
closely with colleagues as we
listen to our communities and
find creative ways of working
with others in a constantly
changing context. As Anglican
churches in Nottingham we are
about seeking justice with
struggling communities in the
city; offering distinctive
worship, and finding ways to
accompany people in living out
their faith and values in
authentic ways.”

The UK's only Fairtrade
charity Advent calendar
with a free copy of the
Christmas story in the box is on
sale across Britain - and is set to
raise £25,000 for the Children's
Society.
The Real Advent Calendar has a
window for each day of
December, behind which is a
Belgian chocolate star and a line
from the Christmas story.
'When you open the final,
over-sized window, a chocolate star and a beautifully-illustrated,
24-page copy of the Nativity story is revealed,' explained David
Marshall, founder of the Meaningful Chocolate Company which
makes the calendar.
The Advent calendar is the latest in a line of products from the
company, following the success of the Real Easter Egg, launched in
2011. More than £100,000 has now been raised for charitable
projects.
'Farmers in the developing world receive a good price for their
produce,' explained David. 'They also receive a premium cash
payment to invest in their community - enabling them to buy
everything from schoolbooks to solar panels.'
Tesco is the only supermarket stocking the calendar this year.
'Supplies will be available in most Tesco stores. This is a very
significant step and we hope people will support it,' said David
The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu said: 'The Real Advent
Calendar offers a unique way to share the Christmas story while
supporting The Children’s Society and Fairtrade. I believe it will be
widely welcomed by all. The Real Advent Calendar is a chance to
educate, stimulate our thinking and do good.'
Churches, schools and groups can reserve and place orders with Tesco
by asking their local store to place a manager's order for The Real
Advent Calendar - product number 74819584. To find the phone
number of your local Tesco store call 0800 505 555 or visit the Tesco
store locator www.realadvent.co.uk/shop

Little did Vicar of Annesley
with Newstead, the Revd Liz
Turner-Loisel know about
the talents a young organist had
when he arrived ‘out of the blue’.
Thirty-something Chris Lawry
turned out to be not only a superb
organist but also plays guitar in the
church music group and is a gifted
composer. “I had a phone call from
Chris after our organist of 40 years
had died, and we were thrilled as
we had been making do with the
‘No Organist, No Problem’ CD’s
and have a beautiful listed and rare
full pipe organ going to waste...”
explained Liz.
In addition to his other writing, Chris has turned his hand to Christian
songs and choir works which are doing well in America as well as in
the UK, and this has led to him starting an MA in Music Composition
at the University of Salford - Manchester.
Now he has launched a sheet music album of Christmas songs aimed
at church and school use, which he has also recorded as a CD with All
Saints’ Music Group Leader Brian Staton and ex-Cantamus Girls’
Choir member Samantha Vernon, a recent music graduate herself.
“The album was designed to be a sheet music resource for church and
school use, and despite the writing and recording only taking several
months such projects can take an awfully long time, mostly years, to
get off the ground properly,” said Chris. “It’s also been a very pleasant
surprise that the recordings made for the accompanying CD of
demonstration/backing tracks have been so popular we’ve had to
produce it as a stand-alone item! It’s been a great pleasure writing and
recording this project and I hope that these songs reach out in feeling
as much as they have to all involved in the production.”

Poppy Richards (a student atChester University from Ordsallparish) writes:
Having been fortunate
enough to go on the
diocesan trip to Burundi
in July 2012, I was absolutely
delighted to be invited to act as
secretary on the trip to Burundi
and Rwanda in August 2013.
Bishop Paul, the Revd Sarah
Clark and I travelled around the
countries for two weeks with 3
MPs and a Christian Aid
representative from London. We
visited many projects that worked
to promote peace and
reconciliation in countries and
communities where there has
been conflict in the last 20 years.
At times, I found the experience
very difficult, but in contrast was
the immense joy that comes from
seeing how people's lives have
been transformed through faith
and determination.
Apart from having the chance to
get to know some wonderful
people very well, my favourite
part of the trip was visiting
successful projects that had
bought all members of the
community together. The
Governments, Churches and non-
Government organisations work
together to create imaginative
projects that encourage people to
work together towards something
that matters more than ethnicity.
For example, we visited an
animal breeding scheme in which
different families would work to
keep the animals and then share
the profit and produce at the end.
These projects provide something
that meets a need which is greater
than ethnic differences, for
example, the need for food,
money and to develop businesses
further. I also noticed that a lot of
the projects had a support group
element to them where people can
sit and talk about how they were
affected by the conflict, and be
helped by people with similar
experiences. I think that
discussion and support from the
local community plays a key role
in promoting peace and
reconciliation in these countries.
Just like my first trip to Burundi, I
was overwhelmed by the
amazingly positive attitudes of
the people we met. This seems
particularly wonderful given the
horrors of the recent genocide in
Rwanda and civil war in Burundi.
We were shown such hospitality
wherever we went, and people
seemed so pleased to have
visitors! Whenever I think about
this trip, I will remember how
inspiring the people were. Some
of the church people in particular
have shown such faith and
strength by forgiving people in
their communities for the most
horrific deeds. Their desire to
create a better future for the next
generation in which history will
not be repeated is what drives
them to think beyond themselves
and put the whole community
first.
It is often assumed that countries
such as Burundi and Rwanda
need lots of help from countries
like ours. That may be so, but
there is such a lot that we can
learn from them too.

Six churches in the
Bestwood area have been
working with Nottingham
Citizens, supporting their work
across Nottinghamshire.
Having already seen successes
concerning safety in
Nottinghamshire – by building a
relationship with Paddy Tipping,
Police and Crime Commissioner
– the Citizens teams are currently
working on areas such as mental
health, jobs, debt, the Living
Wage, BME recruitment in the
police force, domestic violence
and safety in the city centre.
The teams have been following a
pattern of listening to their
community to identify the biggest
concerns; researching to find
possible solutions; recruiting
power by inviting others to join
their voices; taking action to
effect change. Portia Newling,
Lay Reader and local resident
says: “Our mums get turned away
from health centres because we
live in a boundary and find
ourselves registered with the
‘wrong’ GP and having to use
specific health clinics. This
shocked our Councillors and they
agreed to help us resolve the
issue by working with the clinical
commissioning group, perhaps to
access some health services like
baby weighing in our village.
This will be a slow piece of work
though and the process is only
just beginning….”
In St Marks Church, Bestwood
Village, the teams have also been
working locally with help from
Community Organisers George
Gabriel and Lydia Rye, to address
the particular concerns of the
community, and have worked
with their Head Teacher, the chair
of the PTA, and the chair of local
community organisation ‘Village
Vision’ to establish a priority-
based agenda offering maximum
opportunity for success.
Portia continues: “Having
decided to focus on addressing
transport, school facilities, access
to health care and proposed
massive new development in our
village we had great success
meeting with Cllr Chris
Barnfather and Council Leader
Alan Rhodes to find ways of
tackling barriers which prevent
residents of the village accessing
services. Now we are meeting
with officials responsible for
these areas to explore the
possibilities for change”.

Proposal for Mental Health Champions in every parish of the Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham Why the church should be concerned about mental health
At least one in four adults and one in ten children will have a significant mental health problem at some point in their lives.
People with mental health problems experience stigma and discrimination. So it is hard for people to talk about their difficulties and to receive support. This stigma extends to their carers too.
In the year when the Diocese is seeking justice, it is noteworthy that mental ill health accounts for 23% of the disability in the UK but only receives 11% of the NHS budget.
The church has always been called to work with the marginalised in society. Those with mental health problems often have additional social problems to face. This includes unemployment, poverty, debt, relationship breakdown, social isolation and being the victim of abuse or violence. They are more likely to have additional physical health problems and those with severe mental illness have a life expectancy 20 years less that the general population.
Those with mental health problems often look to the church for support.
Mental health awareness within our church congregations In 2011, several clergy contacted Diocesan officers to express concern about the lack of support for those with mental health problems and the impact of health and local authority cuts on support services. Following an open meeting, Opening Minds was established as a strategy group for the Diocese on mental health and learning disability issues. The membership includes those with lived experience, carers, clergy and mental health professionals. Opening Minds began by listening to those with mental health problems, a carers’ group and three deanery synods, (Mansfield, Newark and Southwell and Newstead). All three deanery synods expressed a wish to tackle the lack of knowledge and understanding about mental health issues. Those with lived experience of mental health problems had many stories of being blamed; being told that their problems were due to a lack of faith or that they should worship enthusiastically, even if depressed.
Ways of reducing mental health discrimination and stigma
Get to know people with mental health problems. The best way to challenge misconceptions is to get to know someone with mental health problems. It can feel risky to be open about such difficulties, though one or two have done so at the deanery synod workshops. How can our church communities make it easier to talk about mental health to increase the chances of these conversations? Challenge myths about mental health. People for example often think that those with mental illness are violent Use the gifts and abilities of those with mental health problems and learning disabilities. We all like to feel we have something to contribute as well as to receive support. Work for health and social justice. Challenge local and national policies which maintain discrimination against those with mental health problems.
Mental health champions: a way forward Opening Minds has been asked if they can provide mental health awareness training at a parish level. We, however, believe that it is better to support the expertise that already exists in the church communities, including those with lived experience of mental health difficulties. Opening Minds can offer training and information and enable the parish champions to network together, exchange good ideas and to support one another. A mental health champion is a person with a passion for the wellbeing of people with mental health problems and their carers. They would need to be good at listening and relating to others and getting their trust and in communicating their concerns. They would need to work with the church leaders in this role. The champion will be appointed by the Parochial Church Council (PCC) and the church leader as a sign of the support of all the church leadership for the champion and their role. It would be ideal if the champion could have lived experience of mental health issues but to start with it the champion may be someone who is able to work alongside those who have. Their role is to ensure that the church is welcoming, accepting, supportive and involves those with mental health problems including those in the wider community. They will be enabled to signpost people who need help, advice and information. The champions will have access to general information and people who could offer more specific advice and guidance. The role includes advocacy at the level of the local church but does not include counselling or direct mental health care. They will be able to inform the church community of training opportunities locally. The aim would be to start by linking the champions to Opening Minds to offer them training and support. The role is expected to evolve over time, with the champions contributing to that process. In that way it will be exciting, maybe challenging but not difficult.
