Principal’s foreword Introduction

St Benedict’s provides an exciting opportunity to be part of the establishment of a                           new learning community, exploring contemporary directions for learning in                 primary schools and working collaboratively to develop and enact our vision. We                       believe that every student has God given gifts for success and these flourish in an                             innovative learning culture. At St Benedict’s we believe in providing a

 differentiated approach to learning that both supports and challenges our                   students within a flexible learning environment.

We are building our school charism and school values with consideration of our                         Patron Saint, St Benedict, whose contemplative spirituality, his thinking about the                     future of the church and his directions for building community within the church,                         provide a valuable foundation for our school.

Benedictine spirituality is the foundation of the meditation prayer life which all                       Catholic schools across our Diocese practise. We believe meditation builds                   community and St Benedict shows us the way of community.

Our school is blessed to be part of the Catholic Parish known as the Ministerial                             Region of the Good Shepherd, currently led by Fr Dave Lancini.

School Renewal, Strategic Planning and Annual School Improvement The Characteristics of Effective Catholic Schools is the guiding document of the TCEO                         schools linking the processes of planning, implementation and review for the purpose of                         enhancing the quality and effectiveness of Catholic Schools. Through the                   Characteristics of Effective Catholic Schools each school can monitor its effectiveness,                     focus on strategies for improvement and fulfil its accountability responsibilities to                     various entities.

● Place on high priority on ongoing professional learning for all staff and on                         the development of a school-wide, self-reflective culture focused on                 improving teaching.

Curriculum offerings  Our Learning Enrichment programme targets students of varying abilities and interests. A Learning Enrichment teacher challenges students by focussing on the application of the skills already attained in various subject areas. Initiatives which contribute to our school culture include:  A Student Engagement Plan

Learning & Teaching- At St Benedict's Catholic School, traditional and                   contemporary approaches to learning will be used to actively engage our                     students in the learning process. Our curriculum program and teaching                   strategies will incorporate opportunities appropriate to the development               needs of each learning stage, including play in the early years, hands on                         experiences, community engagement and opportunities to apply             academic knowledge as learning progresses.  Active Responsible Community- At St Benedict’s Catholic School we seek                   to live the Christian values of love and trust of one another and of respect                             for all of God’s creation. Through Jesus, as our role model for how we                           should live and act towards each other, we believe that:

● everyone has the right to be treated with respect and to live in safety; ● the establishment of a happy and safe environment is the shared

responsibility of all staff, parents, carers and students; ● children learn essential social skills, such as self-discipline and

conflict management best when modelled by significant adults such                 as parents and teachers;

● as each child is made in the image and likeness of God and brings                           their own unique experiences and gifts to school, levels of social skills                       will vary;

● clearly defined rights and responsibilities allow all members of the                   school community to promote ownership by all;

● action taken to resolve conflict is based on respect, forgiveness and                     justice.

We work to maintain a happy and supportive environment that                   maximizes learning experiences and develops skills that enable each                 student to contribute positively to the school community.

Wellbeing A core component for successful Student Engagement is                 Wellbeing. Student resilience and wellbeing are essential for both                 academic and social development, and are optimised by safe, supportive                   and respectful learning environments. Schools share this responsibility               with the whole community. At St Benedict's we draw on a range of                         resources to develop Well being in our community.

 eProjects

At St Benedict’s we believe that some learning is best done with a hands on inquiry based approach where students are engaged in projects. The ‘e’ in eProjects stands for Environment, Engagement and Educational, While we still develop our learning experiences based on the expectations of the Australian Curriculum, we use the eProjects concept to draw on certain aspects of some subjects together to create a deeper more enriched learning experience.

 Typically, this can be called STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) or STREAM (which adds Reading or Religion and the Arts) but we have preferred to develop our own name so we can be more flexible and maintain the integrity of subject areas. Specifically we have applied concepts from the Australian Curriculum that promote learning about Stewardship, Sustainability and Creation (from Religion Curriculum) to at least one long year level project per grade. Different year levels draw on different subject areas for their projects.

 Camps and Excursions  At St Benedict’s, we believe that hands on immersion experiences are a great source of learning and therefore each year level will participate in at least two excursions per year and a camp from Year 4. Excursions include visiting places like shopping centres, farms, parks, Reef HQ, theatres, churches, Billabong Sanctuary and wetlands to name just a few opportunities.  Camps will involve a focus on the year level eProject but will also include opportunities for personal and spiritual development.   Sport In addition to our PE program, St Benedict’s offers opportunities for participation in a variety of skill development programs during ‘Friday Sport’, often sourcing the expertise from the wider community. St Benedict’s students can also qualify for regional competitions from Year 2 through our Cross Country, Athletics and Swimming Carnivals as well as access trials for other representative sports once they are in Year 5.
