Dear Prospective Postgraduate Student

Thank you for your interest in postgraduate study at the University of Cape Town. We strive to be a world class university in Africa. Established in 1829, we are South Africa’s oldest university, and a leading university in Africa.

As a postgraduate student, you will join a research-led institution where we have significantly more A rated (or rated) researchers, SARChl chair holders, and academics and graduate students publishing in leading journals than at any SA university, and an academic community which includes over a third of SA’s postdoctoral research fellows.

sTuDy visAs

In terms of the Immigration Act No 13 of 2002, if you are resident outside of South Africa and are not a South African citizen or do not have permanent residence, you are required to obtain a study visa to enter the Republic for the purpose of attending the University.

The offer of a study place by the University does not bind the Department of home Affairs in any way to allow you to study in South Africa, nor does it remove the need for you to obtain permission to enter the country. If you are offered a study place please apply immediately for a study visa. Your application must be made to the nearest South African embassy, consulate or high commission. This procedure could take up to 8 weeks. The application form BI-1738, duly completed, must be accompanied by the following:

(a) Valid passport(b) A fee (current details are available from the nearest South African embassy, consulate or high commission)(c) an official letter from UcT confirming provisional acceptance at the institution and the duration of the course(d) in the case of a person under the age of 21 years. (i) the particulars of the person in the Republic who will act as that learner’s guardian and a confirmatory letter from that intended guardian; and (ii) proof of consent for the intended stay from both parents or from the custodian parent, along with proof of sole custody in the latter case(e) a police clearance certificate(f) medical and radiological reports(g) documents relating to marital status if applicable(h) a yellow fever vaccination certificate if that person travelled or intends travelling from or through a yellow fever endemic area(i) in the case of a foreign state accepting responsibility for the applicant in terms of a bilateral agreement, a written undertaking in respect of the departure of the applicant(j) proof of medical cover with a medical scheme registered in terms of the medical Schemes Act, 1998 (Act No. 131 of 1998), or other medical insurance cover recognised in the Republic (access www.medicalschemes.com for a list of medical schemes recognised in South Africa)(k) proof of sufficient financial means(l) payment of a deposit: Provided that such deposit shall be refunded to the depositor after the final departure of the applicant or after a permit contemplated in section 25 of the Act has been issued to the applicant: Provided further that the payment ofthedepositmaybeeffectedbymeansofabankguaranteedchequeorcreditcardatplaceswheresuchfacilityexists.(m) In the case of students from Africa, the payment of the deposit shall not be required: Provided that the Government of the relevant African country submits a written undertaking to pay all costs relating to the deportation of the student, should this become necessary.(n) other requirements as may be prescribed by the consulate/embassy

We recommend that you contact the nearest South African consulate/embassy before sending in your visa application, in order to findoutexactlywhatdocumentsareneeded, becauserequirementsmaychange.Itisveryimportantthatyourstudyvisaisvalidforstudies at the University of cape Town. If you have studied at another South African University or attended high school in South Africa, your study visa needs to be changed for studies at the University of cape Town. International students residing within South Africa will not be able to register unless in possession of a valid study visa and proof of medical cover. International students (master’s and Doctoral students) living outside South Africa during the academic year may be registered by the University without having to apply for a study visa. Such students need to obtain a suitable visa when visiting UcT and their supervisors, and on arrival in cape Town must report to IAPo with details of their visa.
