INTRODUCTION This directory presents information that was collected during September and October 2005. The name and address of each agency involved with the transportation of radioactive materials are followed by the name, title and contact information of the senior official and of the person to contact for information on radioactive materials. The column to the right contains brief descriptions of the agency's responsibility in transportation and its specific responsibility for radioactive materials, with citations of the statutes or other assignment of those responsibilities. That information is followed by the title or citation of transportation regulations promulgated by the agency, if any, and a brief description of their scope. The directory is organized by state, followed by federal offices. In each state, the responsibility for transportation is typically distributed among:

1. The carrier regulatory agency, such as a public service commission, responsible for authorization of carriers and their rates,

2. The transportation department or highway commission, concerned with regulation of the vehicles,

3. The commodity regulatory agency, usually the radiation control agency of the state, 4. The safety agency, such as the state highway patrol, 5. The governor's designated recipient for notification of high-level radioactive waste

(HLRW) and spent fuel shipments per 10 CFR 71 & 73, 6. The emergency response planning commission, 7. The emergency management agency.

Numerous federal agencies exercise one or more of the above roles according to whether the commodity is used in nuclear weapons, non-weapon applications, or 'dual use,' whether the material is owned by the Dept. of Energy or the Dept. of Defense, or other entity, whether the shipment is international or domestic, and whether or not a transited state has an agreement to assume authority from the cognizant federal agency. Of the numerous federal offices involved with planning response to incidents that involve nuclear fuel, weapons or other radioactive material, only those that are routinely involved with incidents in transportation of radioactive material other than weapons are listed in this directory. CRCPD: A Partnership Dedicated to Radiation Protection

The Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors, Inc. (CRCPD) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit non-governmental professional organization dedicated to radiation protection. CRCPD was formed in 1968.

• We promote radiological health in all aspects and phases; • We encourage and promote cooperative enforcement programs with federal

agencies and between related enforcement agencies within each state; • We encourage the interchange of experience among radiation control programs; • We collect and make accessible to the membership of the CRCPD such

information and data as might be of assistance to them in the proper fulfillment of their duties;

• We promote and foster uniformity of radiation control laws and regulations; • We encourage and support programs that will contribute to radiation control for

all; • We assist the membership in their technical work and development; and • We exercise leadership with radiation control professionals and consumers in

radiation control development and action.

CRCPD's mission is "to promote consistency in addressing and resolving radiation protection issues, to encourage high standards of quality in radiation protection programs, and to provide leadership in radiation safety and education." CRCPD's primary membership is made up of radiation professionals in state and local government who regulate the use of radiation sources. But anyone with an interest in radiation protection is eligible to join. Please join our Partnership.
