Hello againOlder generations enjoy entertaining the youngsters withstories of their world without computers and mobile phones, the first computer games, the VHS vs Beta battle and yes, Ieven remember music on 8 track cassettes! They claim it was a simpler worldthen, but technology has brought the freedom to work from home, to stay intouch with friends and family, to shop online and to find out almost anythingI want to instantly - fantastic.
Our Discover team, too is very much in “the cloud”; that is we have peopleworking on the magazines remotely; Allison our designer in Derbyshire, ouradministrator Lauren lives in Kent and Marina, our short story illustrator, livesin Serbia.
However, technology doesn’t stop us needing local tradespeople, gardeners, hairdressers, garages and – of course – someone to fix our computers when theygo wrong! And that’s what this magazine is all about. A choice of services inone handy guide and two pages this month of events, for the days when youfeel like interacting with the real world rather than just the virtual one!
Best wishes,
p.s My apologies for the absence of the Directory of Independent Retailers this
month. With the unexpected acquisition of a local Winchester magazine and
launching our 8th title Discover Winchester, I simply ran out of time, hands and
energy. But it’s coming, I promise!

A seat of learning, a testament to timelessBritish architecture, a sanitary sanctuary forinjured servicemen and women and, of course,a family home.
Townhill Park House has transcendedtime in numerous guises but throughall has retained a certain proud andmajestic heritage.
The use of this grand and prestigioushouse has changed many times andyet unlike many of its contemporarybuildings, Townhill Park Houseremains a building of generousproportions and designed beauty. The house itself has undergone manychanges but nothing can take away
the heritage and deep history that lies behind theheavy oak doors that guard, retain and hide theidentity of the house.
In its formative days, Townhill Park House waspart of the originalmanor farm and laterduring the late 1700s itwas converted tobecome a gentleman’sresidence. By 1897Townhill Park Housewas acquired by thefirst Lord Swaythling,Ivor Montagu for hiseldest son and heir,Louis Montagu, for theimpending marriage ofLouis to Lady GladysGoldsmid. On the deathof his father, Louisbecame the secondLord Swaythling.
Townhill Park House
In 1911 Louis Montagu started a programme ofimprovement and renovation for Townhill ParkHouse. Louis employed the eminent youngarchitect, Leonard Rome Guthrie who oversawimprovements and renovations to the building.Louis also employed the famous garden designerand horticulturalist of the time, Gertrude Jekyll,to establish the detailed gardens, designingframed views, yew hedging, dry stone wallingand the magnificent sunken garden. Togetherthey planned, built and created the gardens thatsurrounded the house.
In 1927 the house was occupied bythe third Lord Swaythling, Stuart - sonof Lord Louis - after his father’s death.Lord Stuart moved into the housewith his wife Lady Mary. When theSecond World War broke out in 1939,Lord Stuart loaned the house to theRed Cross, where it became aconvalescent home for soldiers. After the war in 1948, Lord and LadySwaythling divorced and TownhillPark House and the estates were sold.
The estates weredivided into lotsand most werebought for housingdevelopment. However, thehouse and 30acres were boughtby MiddlesexCounty Council.
Under the ownership of Middlesex CountyCouncil, the House was used as a residentialboarding school for girls; the use remainedunchanged until 1970.
In the years from 1970-85, Townhill Park Houseafforded yet another use as it provided a suitablelocation for a hostel for Merchant Navy cadets. After the Cadets left occupation in 1984, thehostel closed and the estate ownership changedagain, this time being acquired by HampshireCounty Council. The House was then brieflyused as a conference centre until 1994, when theexpanding Gregg School acquired the house andgrounds to provide a facility of education andlearning. Today Townhill Park House isflourishing under the ownership of ‘The Gregg’and is benefiting from the school’s efforts toregenerate the property to its former glory.

A veteran pilot and a singer who entertained thetroops during World War II have helped launch aspecial exhibition, shedding new light on theNew Forest’s pivotal role during the war.
A treasure trove of unseen photos and stories hasbeen unearthed from people’s attics and cupboardsfor display at the New Forest Remembersexhibition at the New Forest Centre in Lyndhurst.
The display was officially opened by JulianJohnson, chairman of the New Forest NationalPark Authority, and New Forest East MP JulianLewis. The exhibition reveals how Alliedservicemen based in the Forest prepared for D-Day,how German and Italian prisoners of war were keptand how local residents did their bit for the wareffort.
The free exhibition is part of the New ForestRemembers: untold stories of World War II Projectrun by the New Forest National Park Authority, andfunded by the Heritage Lottery Fund andExxonMobil at the Fawley Refinery. The two-yearproject aims to bring the war years alive througharchaeological surveys and digitally capturing thememories of those who lived through the war.
Two of the special guests at the exhibition launchwere veteran pilot Arthur Poore (corr) DFC andformer singer Brenda Logie (corr). Mr Poore flew inseveral bombing raids over German cities, whilstMs Logie entertained thousands of Allied troopsstationed in the New Forest.
Both have shared their photos and memories, along with dozens of others, illuminating howordinary people lived and fought through theconflict.
Ms Logie said: ‘I think it’s marvellous that they’vegot so much material together. I don’t think theyounger generations know enough about thisperiod and the stories which are jolly interesting.’
The display also includes a previously unseen diaryentry from His Majesty King George VI, detailinghow in the run up to the Normandy landings hepaid a secret visit to the Exbury Estate which wasrequisitioned as a naval training base, HMSMastodon.
In a diary made available by the Royal Archives, the King revealed how he sailed down the BeaulieuRiver to the Solent and saw a fleet of more than 300landing craft and ships from the deck of thecommand ship HMS Bulolo, just days before thestart of Operation Overlord.
Nicholas de Rothschild, whose family have lived at
the Exbury estate since 1912, was at the exhibitionopening and said: ‘I think it’s a wonderfulexhibition. I spent some time recording the peopleat HMS Mastodon telling their stories. I know whyit’s so important to keep them. That’s why thisproject is such a tremendous achievement.’
Julian Johnson, chairman of the New ForestNational Park Authority, said: ‘It never ceases toamaze me how much long-forgotten material is inpeople’s attics and hidden away in cupboards. Somuch of this material has been thrown away in thepast and it is refreshing seeing so many oldphotographs, diaries and recorded reminiscencesbeing exhibited. It is important that we retrieve asmuch of this historic information as we can and toensure that it is kept for future generations. I amproud that the National Park Authority has beenclosely involved with this project.’
New Forest East MP Julian Lewis said: ‘What thisexhibit has managed to achieve is bringingtogether local memories and records with parts ofthe national collection that people will normallynever be able to see unless they’re a specialistresearcher. What’s so particularly striking aboutthis project is that people can continue to add theirown memories and tributes long after the exhibithas finished.’
The New Forest Remembers exhibit will run at theNew Forest Centre in Lyndhurst until 28 April.
The exhibits will also be available online on adigital portal full of recorded interviews, photos, letters, diaries, film footage and animated 3Dreconstructions. Members of the public can alsoadd their stories and memories to the portal.
