Hello againOlder generations enjoy entertaining the youngsters withstories of their world without computers and mobile phones, the first computer games, the VHS vs Beta battle and yes, Ieven remember music on 8 track cassettes! They claim it was a simplerworld then, but technology has brought the freedom to work from home, tostay in touch with friends and family, to shop online and to find out almostanything I want to instantly - fantastic.
Our Discover team, too is very much in “the cloud”; that is we have peopleworking on the magazines remotely; Allison our designer in Derbyshire, ouradministrator Lauren lives in Kent and Marina, our short story illustrator, lives inSerbia.
However, technology doesn’t stop us needing local tradespeople, gardeners, hairdressers, garages and – of course – someone to fix our computers when theygo wrong! And that’s what this magazine is all about. A choice of services inone handy guide and two pages this month of events, for the days when youfeel like interacting with the real world rather than just the virtual one!
Best wishes,
p.s My apologies for the absence of the Directory of Independent Retailers this month.
With the unexpected acquisition of a local Winchester magazine and launching our
8th title Discover Winchester, I simply ran out of time, hands and energy. But it’s
coming, I promise!

THE landscape of theNew Forest National Parkis a mosaic of ancient andornamental woodland, heaths, rivers and valley
mires, a coastline of mudflats and saltmarshes and pretty historic villages; it is also the most denselypopulated national park in England.
To help protect this landscape the New Forest National Park Authority has worked with a host of Forestorganisations to create a Landscape Action Plan, which sets out proposals on how look after its landscape, conserve its history and wildlife and help plan for its future, alongside the Landscape CharacterAssessment that identifies its special qualities.
The plans look at key themes that may affect the New Forest landscape and suggests ways of managingthem.
Issues such as conserving tranquillity and dark night skies, flooding and drought and invasive pests anddiseases are looked at, as well as the impact the modern world; such as how a growing population couldaffect the landscape of the Forest.
The plans also look at what has defined the historic character of the New Forest landscapes and villages,in order to better preserve their qualities, and the features that make them unique.
You can view the Landscape Action Plan and Landscape Character Assessment on the National ParkAuthority website and download a consultation form at www.newforestnpa.gov.uk/consultations.
Please send your completed response form to: Landscape Action Plan, New Forest National ParkAuthority, Town Hall, Avenue Road, Lymington, SO41 9ZG; or email [email protected].
The closing date for the consultation is 5pm on Monday 6 May 2013. The draft Landscape Action Planand Landscape Character Assessment will then go to the full National Park Authority meeting on 27 June2013 to be considered for formal adoption.
LINKS to 13th century monks,a speech from a future primeminister at the local railwaystation, and a hospital forwounded soldiers are part ofthe fascinating village factsunearthed by Ashurst andColbury residents in theNew Forest.
Now residents working with theNew Forest National ParkAuthority are asking people fortheir views on a draft VillageDesign Statement which theyhope will help keep the characterof their parish special.
The Statement has taken twoyears to produce in consultationwith local residents and has beenprepared by a steering groupfrom the local community whichis keen to ensure that the designof any new development in theparish respects the distinctivelocal character of the area.
When the National ParkAuthority planning committeeconsiders any applications forthe area, the Statement willprovide them with more detaileddesign guidance as a supplementto the Authority’s planningpolicies.
Pat Wyeth, Chair of the NewForest National Park Authorityplanning committee said: ‘Agreat deal of work has gone intothe preparation of this documentand it shows how important thearea’s character is to the localcommunity.’
People are asked to give theirviews on the draft Ashurst andColbury Village DesignStatement during a six-weekpublic consultation which startson Monday 25 March.
You can view the VDS on theNational Park Authority websiteand download a consultation
form at www.newforestnpa.gov.uk

IT is the time of yearwhen we turn ourattention once moreto our gardens andtrees. But does yourtree have a TPO?
WHAT IS A TREEPRESERVATIONORDER? Tree PreservationOrders , also knownas TPO’s were
introduced in the late 1940s to enable LocalPlanning Authorities to protect important trees. TPOs can be made on single trees, groups of trees, areas of trees or whole woodlands. TPOs arecommonly imposed on trees in cities and towns.TPO laws prohibit the cutting down, uprooting, topping, lopping, wilful damage or wilfuldestruction of trees without prior consent fromyour Local Planning Authority.
WHY YOU SHOULD CHECK IF YOUR TREEHAS A TPO?It is an offence to prune or fell TPO or ConservationArea protected trees without first notifying orseeking consent from the appropriate LocalAuthority. Therefore if you are unsure if your treehas a TPO or if you are living in a ConservationArea, always check first with your local council.Pruning or cutting down protected trees withoutprior consent can result in prosecution and amaximum fine of £20,000 for each offence.
WHAT TO DO IF YOUR TREE DOES HAVE A TPO?Don’t despair, you can usually still carry out work toyour tree as long as you first submit a writtenapplication to the Authority. These applicationforms, along with helpful guides are found on yourlocal council’s websites. After you have submitted your application thecouncil will view the tree and make a decision
within 6-8 weeks, informing you what work ispermitted or not.A good Arborist will guide you through the processof TPO applications, advising on the correct termsand tree surgery methods required, increasing thelikelihood of you receiving prompt permission fromyour local authority.
CHOOSING A PROFESSIONAL TREE SURGEONTree surgery is a highly skilled and dangerousoperation, don’t be tempted to do the work yourself, invest in employing a professional Arborist (TreeSurgeon). Ensure you choose an experienced andinsured contractor that is fully qualified inArboriculture, holding a NPTC (National ProficiencyTest Council Certificate). You could even ask to seethe Contractors NPTC card which is proof ofcompetency in a range of skills, including the safeuse of chainsaws, chippers, stump grinders, treeclimbing and aerial rescue.Choosing a Tree Surgeon wisely will result in yourtrees being safely and expertly kept in top condition.

A veteran pilot and a singer who entertained thetroops during World War II have helped launch aspecial exhibition, shedding new light on theNew Forest’s pivotal role during the war.
A treasure trove of unseen photos and stories hasbeen unearthed from people’s attics and cupboardsfor display at the New Forest Remembersexhibition at the New Forest Centre in Lyndhurst.
The display was officially opened by JulianJohnson, chairman of the New Forest NationalPark Authority, and New Forest East MP JulianLewis. The exhibition reveals how Alliedservicemen based in the Forest prepared for D-Day,how German and Italian prisoners of war were keptand how local residents did their bit for the wareffort.
The free exhibition is part of the New ForestRemembers: untold stories of World War II Projectrun by the New Forest National Park Authority, andfunded by the Heritage Lottery Fund andExxonMobil at the Fawley Refinery. The two-yearproject aims to bring the war years alive througharchaeological surveys and digitally capturing thememories of those who lived through the war.
Two of the special guests at the exhibition launchwere veteran pilot Arthur Poore (corr) DFC andformer singer Brenda Logie (corr). Mr Poore flew inseveral bombing raids over German cities, whilstMs Logie entertained thousands of Allied troopsstationed in the New Forest.
Both have shared their photos and memories, along with dozens of others, illuminating howordinary people lived and fought through theconflict.
Ms Logie said: ‘I think it’s marvellous that they’vegot so much material together. I don’t think theyounger generations know enough about thisperiod and the stories which are jolly interesting.’
The display also includes a previously unseen diaryentry from His Majesty King George VI, detailinghow in the run up to the Normandy landings hepaid a secret visit to the Exbury Estate which wasrequisitioned as a naval training base, HMSMastodon.
In a diary made available by the Royal Archives, the King revealed how he sailed down the BeaulieuRiver to the Solent and saw a fleet of more than 300landing craft and ships from the deck of thecommand ship HMS Bulolo, just days before thestart of Operation Overlord.
Nicholas de Rothschild, whose family have lived at
the Exbury estate since 1912, was at the exhibitionopening and said: ‘I think it’s a wonderfulexhibition. I spent some time recording the peopleat HMS Mastodon telling their stories. I know whyit’s so important to keep them. That’s why thisproject is such a tremendous achievement.’
Julian Johnson, chairman of the New ForestNational Park Authority, said: ‘It never ceases toamaze me how much long-forgotten material is inpeople’s attics and hidden away in cupboards. Somuch of this material has been thrown away in thepast and it is refreshing seeing so many oldphotographs, diaries and recorded reminiscencesbeing exhibited. It is important that we retrieve asmuch of this historic information as we can and toensure that it is kept for future generations. I amproud that the National Park Authority has beenclosely involved with this project.’
New Forest East MP Julian Lewis said: ‘What thisexhibit has managed to achieve is bringingtogether local memories and records with parts ofthe national collection that people will normallynever be able to see unless they’re a specialistresearcher. What’s so particularly striking aboutthis project is that people can continue to add theirown memories and tributes long after the exhibithas finished.’
The New Forest Remembers exhibit will run at theNew Forest Centre in Lyndhurst until 28 April.
The exhibits will also be available online on adigital portal full of recorded interviews, photos, letters, diaries, film footage and animated 3Dreconstructions. Members of the public can alsoadd their stories and memories to the portal.
