The company is registered in Mauritius, and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Naspers Group. With over twenty years’ experience as a Pay TV operator in Africa, MultiChoice Africa offers cutting-edge digital technology and a selection of DStv and GOtv bouquets containing premium television channels for subscribers in 49 African countries and the adjacent Indian Ocean islands. MultiChoice Africa provides its digital satellite television service – DStv - to subscribers’ homes from two different satellites, namely: the Intelsat 20 (“IS 20”) Ku BAND and Eutelsat 36B Ku Band. The Eutelsat 36B satellite was launched in January 2010, and has enabled MultiChoice Africa to expand its DStv services, thus a number of new channels, including High Definition, were launched. The 36B footprint covers the Sub-Saharan Africa, while IS20 covers Southern Africa. The GOtv offering is on a DTT (DVB-T2) network which was established in 2011 and currently covers nine countries. This low cost market offering provides great family entertainment at a price everyone can afford.

2. MULTICHOICE NAMIBIA (MCN):

MultiChoice Namibia (PTY) Ltd falls under MultiChoice Africa Limited as part of its Southern

African Region territory, which comprises of Botswana, Angola, Namibia, Malawi, Mozambique,

Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe respectively.

MultiChoice Namibia (MCN) is the leading video entertainment provider in the country, offering

viewing pleasure for all subscribers through relevant, current and exciting content on DStv and

GOtv.

Kalahari Holdings and MultiChoice Africa entered into a joint venture partnership to bring the

magic of MNET to Namibia in February 1991. MultiChoice Namibia received its transmission

license on 16 December 1991 and began broadcasting three days later from Windhoek via

terrestrial transmission which soon expanded at that stage to 23 transmission sites across the

country. MCN then moved to satellite broadcasting in 1995 through the introduction of DStv.

Today MCN broadcasts on two technologies, Direct-to-Home Technology (DTH) and Digital

Terrestrial Transmission (DTT), commonly referred to as DStv and GOtv respectively.

Since its inception there have been numerous proven developments from the pioneering leader

in digital broadcasting and thus ensured that Namibians have access to an array of innovative

world class technologies amongst other, such as mobile television, DStv Catch Up and the DStv

Explora decoder which all provide the ultimate in video entertainment.

In addition to introducing new products and technologies, Namibia is a proven ground for

pioneering new innovations that have and will continue to spread across the African continent.

MCN was the first country in Africa to introduce the Digital Terrestrial Transmission platform and

in March 2014, Namibia was the first country on the content, other than South Africa to launch

BoxOffice allowing DStv Premium subscribers to rent and keep movies for up to 48 hours.

Furthermore, Namibia was also the pioneer for successfully implementing MultiChoice Africa’s

new payment system in 2014, which is subsequently rolled out in other territories.

MultiChoice Namibia’s core social investment is making learning available to educational

institutions. To date, approximately 370 schools are beneficiaries of the DStv Education Bouquet

under the MultiChoice Resource Centers throughout Namibia.

MCN has contributed in terms of technological advancement through broadcasting, education,

supporting local artists and suppliers through product launches and roll outs. Namibians featured

on the platform by way of participating and even winning major television reality shows such as

Big Brother Africa, Master Chef and Survivor Africa. More recently, David Mbeha from Namibia

has been chosen as one of the Top 3 finalists for TLC’s Next Great Presenter competition. The

lucky winner will be the channel’s first-ever African presenter and host TLC TOP 10 – a brand

new four-part series coming to TLC Entertainment (DStv 172) in December 2015.

At present our business is a truly Namibian entity that has in total 120 staff members. Employment

creation of our business goes beyond the immediate direct employees but also includes 13

agents, 70 retailers and 110 accredited installer companies countrywide.

Our accredited installers have knowledge and experience in dealing with a variety of different

types of DStv installations as a result of proper training supplied by MultiChoice Namibia on all

new developments to ensure they can handle all type of installations and set-ups.

Accredited agents receive in-depth briefings from MultiChoice Namibia’s respective divisions on

its world-class subscriber management services and digital satellite television and DTT platforms,

as well as the new Clarity System which was pioneered in Namibia in 2014.

3. HOT TOPICS:

Pricing Structures:

The value offering is based on content, economic conditions and the demographics of target

consumers. Worldwide, pay television services are discretionary services and depend on the

acquisition and provision of entertainment (premium) channels and content that are not available

elsewhere – for example on free-to-air channels.

Channel suppliers charge a premium price for these channels. Sports rights and other content

are acquired by pay television operators and channels through a bidding process that has the

effect of escalating the final price depending on available bidders and what they are willing to pay.

Consequently, pay television services are targeted at people with discretionary income, and cater

for different market segments (not necessarily a single mass market) – this is the norm worldwide.

MultiChoice, as a pay television operator, operates in line with international norms in pay

television, and its services are both comparable and competitive.

MultiChoice Namibia operates on a bouquet structure that cater for various income levels or

needs:

DStv: Premium; Compact; Family and Access

GOtv: Plus and Value.

EPL moving to the Premium bouquet:

Different markets have different models for packaging sports. There are two ways to recover any

type of cost – one is price, the other is scale.

MultiChoice dropped the EPL to Compact in the hope to get enough subscriber scale at a cheaper

price point to help cover the cost of those rights. However, the scale required to make that viable

was not achieved. In order to avoid a situation for price-sensitive Compact subscribers to take a

disproportionately high increase in bouquet pricing to continue to watch the EPL, the decision was

made to shift the EPL back to the Premium bouquet.

In the latest round of rights negotiations, the EPL rights went up 70 per cent. It was a tough

impact on consumers, but looking at consumer affordability, it was felt better to offer Compact

subscribers a sports package at a more affordable price point.

Repeats:

Programme repeats are part of the ecosystem of multichannel television. Channel providers

internationally repeat movies and programmes to allow viewers to plan viewing time at their

convenience. The purchasing of programme and movie rights is based on a model whereby

Page 8: DISCUSSION GUIDE NOVEMBER 2015 - cms.my.na · PDF fileDISCUSSION GUIDE NOVEMBER 2015 Index: ... DStv Catch Up and the DStv Explora decoder which all ... MultiChoice dropped the EPL

8

programmes and movies are purchased for a certain number of screenings. This allows for the

movies or programmes to be shown at different time slots to allow viewers a choice of when they

would like to access the programming.

Repeats in the case of a multi-channel environment allow subscribers not to miss out in instances

where two or three interesting programmes are flighted at the same time. They also enable

subscribers to plan their viewing time more effectively.

Having exclusively live content available costs billions and no broadcaster in the world has that

kind of offering. The challenge is to balance fresh hours of content and archive programming,

which is a fine balancing act. The key is that a repeat is not a repeat if you haven’t seen it!

Local Content:

MultiChoice Namibia is looking into initiatives to enable local content on to our bouquets.

Currently, we host nbc1 and One Africa on our DStv and GOtv bouquets. We have seen Namibia

featuring on channels such as KykNET as well as the travel and weather channels and the rise

of local talent making it onto the international stage with the likes of Dillish Matthews, Sally and

more recently David Mbeha.

There are plenty of opportunities for Namibian submissions for local content on Zambezi Magic

(DStv Channel 160) that launched July 2015. Channel Head Addiel Dzinoreva says that whilst

the channel is still in its early days, its aims are in sync with those of M-Net’s more established

African channels and in line with M-Net’s long history in sub-Saharan Africa. "Having always

championed the need to showcase African content, we appreciate the demand for a channel like

Zambezi Magic as there are series, movies, music, documentaries and more from Southern Africa

that need to be screened to a wider regional audience. We are more convinced than ever that

Zambezi Magic has the potential to grow in line with audience expectations so we plan to continue

evolving to meet this goal," says Dzinoreva.

4. Exciting local developments on channels:

2016 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCAs):

To enter for the AMVCAs, filmmakers who have produced and broadcast, or publically exhibited their works from October 1st, 2014 to September 30th 2015, should prepare a two or three minute long showreel for an online submission. They must then log on to www.africamagic.tv and click on

the AMVCA submission banner which redirects to a submission page and is then filled, with the showreel uploaded. Once successfully done, a unique reference number will be generated and allocated to each completed submission. Quoting this unique reference number, filmmakers can then send a hard drive of their submitted work to any one of three different addresses, depending on their regions.

Head Judge, Njoki Muhoho, said: “The recognition that the AMVCAs bring to nominated and winning works cannot be quantified or overstated. The quality and quantity of the works entered have improved dramatically from the first edition in 2013. When you are nominated for an AMVCA, then you know you have gained continental and global recognition. But you cannot gain this if you do not enter your work and this is why I urge all filmmakers who meet the criteria to enter their films and show the rest of Africa the amount of talent and creativity abundant in this region,” added Muhoho.

Entries for the AMVCAs were open until the 30th of October, 2015. Check out www.zambezimagic.tv for more. New DStv Channels Lead M-Net’s Hyper-Local Content Approach on the Continent:

M-Net’s vision is to create channels for each homgeonous target market for Southern and Eastern

Africa – be it by language, culture, taste or a combination thereof,” said M-Net Regional Director:

East and Southern Africa & Lusophone countries, Theo Erasmus at a local content channels

roundtable discussion at the MultiChoice Content Showcase at Mauritius on 5 September 2015.

“With that in mind, we are proud to announce that we’re launching a new channel exclusively for

Tanzania on 1 October, called Maisha Magic Bongo (DStv Channel 160). There’s also a new

channel coming in Angola on 11 October on the DStv Premium base called Jango Luxo, and we’ll

also be producing a local version of the international smash hit reality show, The Voice, there.”

Erasmus also promised many things coming in the future with local content from territories

including Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Maisha Magic Channel Head, Margaret Mathore, also revealed expansion plans for the East

African powerhouse channel. “We have every intention to go hyper-local with Maisha Magic and

plan to start channels for each market in East Africa,” she said. “We will be premiering exciting

Page 10: DISCUSSION GUIDE NOVEMBER 2015 - cms.my.na · PDF fileDISCUSSION GUIDE NOVEMBER 2015 Index: ... DStv Catch Up and the DStv Explora decoder which all ... MultiChoice dropped the EPL

10

local content, like hip-hop and Bongo music show Mzooka, a powerful local drama series called

Talaaka and celebrity cooking show, Jikoni na Marion. We will also be licensing content that is

grown in the East African soil, because we have intentions to address the entertainment needs of

East African viewers and develop the region’s film industry.”

Zee World:

Zee TV Africa CEO Harish Goyal spoke at the MultiChoice Africa Content Showcase, alongside Business Head Ratna Siriah and Marketing Manager Linda Oliphant.

"We started Zee World to bring Bollywood to mainstream audiences in a language everyone could understand," said Siriah.

"The channel (on GOtv Channel 25 and DStv Channel 166) has been so successful because we’ve done a lot of research into Africa, to understand how people connect with Bollywood, and we’ve customised the channel and content, accordingly.” The levels of customisation on the channel are astonishing, with Siriah explaining that the team even researches the availability of traditional Indian ingredients for the channel’s trio of cooking shows in local markets, makes tweaks to the recipes and even sources substitute ingredients. “We also customise our movies and series – a Bollywood movie is normally three hours long, so we’ve cut out a number of song and dance routines to make them more easily-consumable for the busy African market,” she said. “That said, we also get complaints about the songs we’ve cut out – people really want to see them – so we use these musical moments as fillers on the channel so nobody misses out on the full Bollywood experience."

On the channel’s growth plans, Goyal said that the mainstream acceptance of Zee World has encouraged the channel to make the move into other languages on the continent. "The next channel we are putting together will be in French, and it should be available before the end of this year," he said.

"Next year, we have two more projects, in two other languages. Then we will be getting into content production, producing content locally in Africa and putting together programming that is even more relevant to the African market." Siriah expanded: “We are also looking at bringing Zee TV original formats like Dance India, Dance to the continent and producing a local version. We will use local production partners and local talent and depending on how relevant the content is to our markets in the other 168 countries where we broadcast, we could consider showcasing that content elsewhere in the world."

Children's Programming:

Turner Broadcasting launches a first of its kind Africa pop-up channel for kids. Hoolee will boost their festive holidays with surprising shows and outstanding content on DStv Premium! Look out for Hoolee from 1 December until 31 January.

for programmes they may have missed.

Some of the devices are explained below:

Explora:

With the Explora, subscribers can record up to 220 hours and enjoy an increased Catch

Up library, which also includes movies, documentaries, kids’ shows and series stacking,

and rent the latest blockbuster movies through BoxOffice.
