The DTH pay TV services have nearly 60 operating platforms all over the world. Compared to the growth rate in the number of subscribers, the growth rate in the revenue generated from the Direct-to-Home pay TV services depicts an increasing trend. The reason attributed for the growth in the annual average revenue per user (ARPU) is the increase in prices of these services, as well as value additions to the services being offered. DTH satellite TVsubscribers worldwide, are projected to be over 133 million in 2010, as stated in a recent report published by Global Industry Analysts, Inc. World DTH satellite TV services market is projected to grow at compounded annual rate of over 9.6 per cent. DTH satellite TV subscribers in Europe account for nearly 50 per cent of the total subscribers globally. However, as the North American and West European markets mature, focus is seemingly shifting towards developing markets such as Asia-Pacific and East European countries. Asia-Pacific represents the fastest growing market for DTH satellite TV services, registering a CAGR of nearly 23 per cent. The Middle East has a substantial satellite communications sector based on regional satellites and DTH broadcasting. Its development reflects economic modernization. Themarket consists of a core Arabic-speaking sector surrounded by a periphery of Iran, Turkey, Cyprus and Israel. Indeed, Turkey has developed as a regional satellite communications node. In North Africa there is considerable overspill of satellite broadcasting from Europe.The core demand for DTH is from free-to-air television. The Middle East follows the German model. Arab consumers are used to having some 55-60 free-to-air Arabic language services, often available through cheap analogue DTH receivers. They have proved unwilling consumers for pay-TVeven where disposable incomes are high.

Venezuelan regulators have ordered cable and satellite operators to stop carrying one of the countrys best known broadcasters, RCTV International, along with five other stations, alleging that the broadcasters violated a requirement to air President Hugo Chvezs speeches. The Committee to Protect Journalists urged Venezuelanauthorities today to allow all of the stations to resume operations immediately. On orders from the National Telecommunication Commission (CONATEL), cable and satellite providers stopped transmitting RCTV International and five other stations shortly after midnight, local press reports said. Theaction against RCTV and the other stationsRitmo Son, Momentum, AmericaTV, American Network, and TV Chilewas taken after the stations chose not to air a speech by Chvez. The next day, during his weekly radio and TV program Al Presidente, Chvez said, We applied the law. If they dont follow it, they wont be allowed back on the air.

Spacecom Satellite Communications Ltd. (TASE:SCC) has signed a deal to provide satellite communications services in Africa.The services will be provided via its Amos-5 satellite. The 6-year deal begins from the start of the commercial operation of the satellite in 2011. Spacecom expects total revenue from the deal to reach $47 million.

The Amos 5 communications satellite is scheduled for launch in 2011 and to operate for 15 years on an orbit that will provide coverage of Africa and parts of Europe and the Middle East. Until the Amos 5 is ready,Spacecom will provide services via the Amos 5i satellite, whose services it purchased for $45 million in September 2009.

Eutelsat Communications has confirmed the signature of a contract with MultiChoice Africa, the pioneer in multi-channel pay-TVacross sub-Saharan Africa. MultiChoice has signed for a total 20 Ku-band transponders for 15 years on Eutelsat's new W7 satellite

Polsat owner Zygmunt Solorz-Zak has said that pay-TV may be the only way to fund the deployment of set-top boxes on Polish DTT. In an interview, Solorz-Zak said he believed 2011 would be the year when Polands much-delayed DTT platform finally launched, but that it would only be a complement to satellite.
