Program: PP Ernie Anderson introduced guest
speaker, Alan Lloyd, who was born in Honolulu,
Territory of Hawaii, went to Punahou School and Swarthmore College where he graduated with a
Bachelor of Science degree. After college, Alan sold
Westinghouse power equipment to utilities and sugar
plantations in Hawaii for 13 years before joining Maui
Electric Company. He transferred to Hawaiian Electric
Company in 1969. Alan retired in 1996 as Executive
Staff Engineer. Alan gave us a history lesson about the
Battle of the Coral Sea.
The Battle of the Coral Sea was a
tactical victory for Japan. But, a
strategic victory for the Allies
who sunk one of Japan’s carriers
and damaged one of the two
Japanese premier carriers so
badly that they missed the Battle
of Midway.
Beginning on 7 May, the carrier
forces from the two sides
exchanged airstrikes over two
consecutive days. The first day,
the U.S. sank the Japanese light
carrier Shōhō, while the Japanese sank a U.S. destroyer
and heavily damaged a fleet oiler (which was later
Doug Taylor & Jory Atamian
scuttled). The next day, the Japanese fleet carrier
Shōkaku and Zuikaku were heavily damaged, the U.S.
fleet carrier Lexington was critically damaged (and was
scuttled as a result), and the Yorktown was damaged.
With both sides having suffered heavy losses in aircraft and carriers damaged or sunk, the two fleets
disengaged and retired from the battle area. Because of
the loss of carrier air cover, Japanese Vice Admiral
Inoue recalled the Port Moresby invasion fleet,
intending to try again later.
This was the first aircraft carrier versus aircraft carrier
battle in history. Alan pointed out other significant
notes of historical importance…
-Almost all Australian troops were deployed overseas
in North Africa leaving Australia substantially
defenseless against the Japanese invasion except for
the US fleet.
-A US Navy pilot, Butch O’Hare, from the Lexington
shot down 5 Japanese planes; the Chicago International
Airport is named after him.
-The Yorktown was hit, but repaired in Pearl Harbor.
-The USS Canberra was named as a US replacement
ship…the only US ship named
for a foreign capital…and
testament to the close
relationship between the US
and Australia.
President Connie thanked Alan for his very educational
presentation and asked him to
sign a children’s book, Wacky
Wednesday by Dr. Seuss,
which will be donated to Aiea
Elementary School in his
honor.
Debbie Deibler led us in the Four-Way-Test.
On August 30th President-Elect Doug Taylor hosted
the annual Dictionary Labeling Project at the Ice Palace. The label crew - Interactors from Farrington &
Radford HS, our members & ohana, and Ice Palace
staff. Doug hosted a post pizza party and John
McLaughlin served his carrot cake. Now over 1000
dictionaries are ready for distribution to 3rd graders at
18 schools!
