The idea of Lionsonoz came from the experiences of charter members Lions Kel and Yvie Kearns when they retired, bought a mobile home and took off to see Australia. They found at many caravan parks other Lions who have done the same thing, however they were quite concerned about the greater percentage of those Lions who had lost touch with their own Clubs and had eventually resigned from Lions altogether. This represented a large number of dropped Lions who could have stayed on as members if a suitable Lions Club was in existence to cater for these “Grey Nomads”. It took no time to get a Lions Club off the ground to cater for these special people. Lionsonoz has a membership at present of over 40, but it is in constant change. When a member of a “Main Stream “ Lions Club wants to join Lionsonoz, all he/she needs to do is ask his/her secretary to apply for transfer. The normal rules of transfer apply. When their travelling days are over, they simply transfer back to a Club of their choosing. Lionsonoz is definitely not out to “poach” members, its prime objective is to help retain good Lions who would likely fall by the wayside if this special type of Lions Club was not available to them. Lionsonoz does not have an activities account. They do not raise or donate money. The members achieve service hours by offering their assistance to the Lions Clubs in which ever town they visit. !Lionsonoz - a different kind of Club!

There is a special type of Lions Club in our system whose prime reason for being in existence is to help “Stop the Drop”. This Lions Club is Australian Lionsonoz, or simply Lionsonoz.!

Lionsonoz was formed in 2009 and chartered in Melbourne by the then International President Al Brandell with 23 members.!

The idea of Lionsonoz came from the experiences of charter members Lions Kel and Yvie Kearns when they retired, bought a mobile home and took off to see Australia. They found at many caravan parks other Lions who have done the same thing, however they were quite concerned about the greater percentage of those Lions who had lost touch with their own Clubs and had!

eventually resigned from Lions altogether. This represented a large number of dropped Lions who could have stayed on as members if a suitable Lions Club was in existence to cater for these “Grey Nomads”.!

It took no time to get a Lions Club off the ground to cater for these special people. Lionsonoz has a membership at present of over 40, but it is in constant change.!

When a member of a “Main Stream “ Lions Club wants to join Lionsonoz, all he/she needs to do is ask his/her secretary to apply for transfer. The normal rules of transfer apply.!

When their travelling days are over, they simply transfer back to a Club of their choosing.!

Lionsonoz is definitely not out to “poach” members, its prime objective is to help retain good Lions who would likely fall by the wayside if this special type of Lions Club was not available to them.!

Lionsonoz does not have an activities account. They do not raise or donate money. The members achieve service hours by offering their assistance to the Lions Clubs in which ever town they visit. It works out very well. Continued on Page 2

It has helped many Lions who find themselves Club-less when their own Lions Club folds and for ladies of the Lions family who are not welcome in a males only Lions Club.!

Lionsonoz does not cater for non-Lions. The applicant must have had Lions experience because of the difficulties a non-Lion would have with the isolation and lack of personal contact with other Lions members. A transferee must also be computer literate and have available computer connection to the internet because the meetings are conducted through Skype Messenger on the third Monday evening of the month. If you need any further information please visit their website www.lionsonoz.nsw.lions.org.au !

He completed a 3 year course in farming, achieving 2nd class honours. He didn't go 'on the land' after completing the course. Following on from this he went to work in a sawmill at Strathewen, southwest Kinglake. In the early 1960s, Harold went to help his aunt run the Bundoora General Store, which then grew to a Post Office and a Grocery store. The general store was sold in the mid-1960s, with Harold remaining on to run the licensed Grocery section.!

He worked for the Department of Agriculture and was a Stock Inspector at Leongatha. He was with the Quarantine service when he retired in 1995. He was very much sport-minded, playing football and cricket with Hurstbridge and Greensborough and Lawn Bowls with Heidelberg.!

His community spirit really came to the fore, when in 1968, he was enticed by a good friend to join a Lions Club that was being formed in Greensborough. He was a Charter member of the club and remained a member until he transferred to Heathcote in 1995. He held many prominent positions – 1st and 2nd Year Director, Secretary, 1st Vice-President, Tail Twister, Club Greeter, Lion Mint Chairman (prior to John Ayres) and Publicity Officer. !

His two greatest achievements whilst with the Greensborough club were Club President (1972-1977, 1984-1985) and Zone Chairman (1981-1982). In 1993, to give recognition for his dedication to Lions, he was presented with the *Melvin Jones Award. (Only 2 other members of Heathcote hold this award, those being Ray Johnson, 2003 and Greg Speirs, 2014).!

Harold and his wife Diane retired to Heathcote in 1995. His association with Lions was to continue. His vast knowledge of the Lions movement did not go to waste, and he was appointed Secretary three times and President in 1997-1999. !

He also held the position of the 'Cashier' for the Lions Market and Stargazers BBQs. Diane held the position of Secretary (1999-2001) and was the first female Club President in the Club. Sadly, Diane passed way whilst in this position. !

Harold and Diane had six children - three each from a previous marriage.!

Since moving to Heathcote, Harold was a stalwart in the community. He was 'Master of Ceremonies' for the Australia Day ceremonies and Carols by Candlelight. His devotion and community spirit were recognised in 2007 when he was presented with the McIvor Community Award. !

The community of Heathcote and the Lions Club are much richer for having Harold as part of them.!

Harold died a a few weeks ago after a long battle with Dementia !

HAROLD FRASER - Who was that man?!

As interviewed by Heathcote Lions Daryl and Jeanette Dedman with thanks also to Lion Caroline James and Lion Greg Speirs.!!Harold Fraser, pictured on the left, was born in Frankston on 29 April 1932 and went to the Frankston State and High Schools. !In his words, he was not a good student at High School. At age 15 he left High School to attend Longerenong Agricultural College.

GLENROY LIONS - An active Club for 40 years!

The 19th of March saw a great gathering of Lions and their partners and guests to help celebrate the 40th Charter Anniversary of the Glenroy club. which was chartered on the 28th of February 1975.!!Guests included DG Kevin Tait and Coralie (Northcote), PDG Eric Gittins and Jan (Northcote), PDG Helen Campbell (State Parliament Victoria), Presidents PDG Pauline Harris (Heidelberg/Warringal), Lyn Langshaw (Coburg) and Henry Van Der Wolde (Brunswick). Councillor John Kavanagh from Moreland Council and Councillor Geoff Porter from Hume Council were there along with quite a number of Lions and their partners representing Northcote, Heidelberg/Warringal, Lancefield/Romsey, Coburg, Brunswick, Sunshine City and Sunbury/Hume clubs along with a number of guests from amongst our supporters.!!Most pleasing to see was the presence of a number of past presidents of our great club who, sadly, are no longer members of the Glenroy fraternity. We had John Steward, Bill Diamond, Trevor Barr, Kevin Robbins, Nick Trewhella, Les Hooke and Bill Gornall who gladly took the opportunity to meet the current club members.!!92 people attended the evening and reinforced the good standing of the Glenroy Club within the district. !A great meal was enjoyed and guests were entertained with some recollections of the early days of the club by Life Members Alan Evans. Guest Wei Tang entertained with fine soprano singing a number of operatic arias. Wei Tang is currently studying English at the Glenroy Neighbourhood Learning Centre where the club holds its regular Board Meetings.!!A monster raffle of 40 prizes concluded the evening - a prize to represent each year of the club’s existence.!!Pictured below are the runner-up of the LEO of the Year competition on the left Tracey Du with the winner Caitlyn Moore; also some of Glenroy’s happy members.!!

LIONS ART SHOW Bounces Back!

From the Midland Express !- Tues April 14 2015!About 400 entries including !paintings, mixed media, !sculpture, glass art, woodwork, !pottery and photography drew !a steady crowd of visitors to !St Ambrose Hall for this year's !Woodend Lions Art Show over !the Labour Day long !weekend.!!This year's Woodend Lions Art !Show has left organisers and many artists jubilant after 74 artworks sold and more than $10,000 !was raised for the local community.!!The overwhelming success of the 40th anniversary event follows the cancellation of the show last year due to insufficient entries.!!Lions president, Barry McDonald, attributed the success to a massive volunteer effort by a small group of club representatives and members of the Macedon Ranges Art Trail, who joined forces to revitalise the annual show.!!"This is the real success, the synergy of groups of people working together to achieve great things. We are delighted with the contributions made by the artists of the trail and are pleased that the show worked well for them too," Mr McDonald said.!!About 400 entries including paintings, mixed media, sculpture, glass art, woodwork, pottery and photography drew a steady crowd of visitors to St Ambrose Hall throughout the Labour Day long weekend.!!Macedon Ranges Art Trail manager, Nadine Hartnett, believes this year's success augurs well for the event's growth and proves how powerful community partnerships can be.!!"We were confident that it would be a strong show but never anticipated so many sales. The tremendous positive feedback about the artwork and its presentation will drive us forward," Ms Hartnett said.!!"This is primarily about making good things happen in our community. It also provides artists of all standards with excellent exposure to the public and a venue to exhibit and sell their work."!!The Lions will use the money raised to fund school scholarships, support people in need, contribute to medical research and young individual endeavours, and, if necessary, to offer aid after natural disasters.!!Anyone wishing to find out more about joining the Woodend Lions can ring Barry McDonald on 5427 1272.!!

MOTORCYCLISTS Share Lunch with Buninyong Mt Helen Lions!

Every year for the past 20 years, a group !of motorcycle riders from across the state !have been stopping in Buninyong for lunch !to help raise money for the local Lions Club.!!Buninyong Mt Helens Lions Club Secretary !Bill Jolly said the group of riders had grown !this year. “It is a bit of a celebration this one !- for the 20 years,” he said.!!It is very satisfying, we average around 30 !bikes, but this year we have 39. We have !some people who have been coming every !year for 20 years and quite a few riders as !well. !!“It is one of the functions. We raise money and all that money goes back in to the community, that is what Lions is all about.”!!Mr Jolly said the group was currently working to send money to Vanuatu after the country was left devastated by a cyclone.!!Motorcycle group organiser Jenni Papst said the group included riders from all over the state.!!“These people at the Lions Club are such an intrepid group,” she said. “It is a great way for us to connect with the community.

“Lions House” .. celebrates its 1st anniversary since opening… !

Twelve months have gone so quickly and here we are celebrating our 1st anniversary since the new “House” was opened by his Excellency the Governor of Victoria on the 23rd of February 2014. So what better way to acknowledge such an important date in our calendar than to put on a BBQ dinner for those currently staying at “Lions House” !The Trustees joined residents for an informal bbq dinner at the “House” on Monday evening the 23rd of February….12 months to the day since opening. !!“Lions House” is looking great and this is because those that stay at the house appreciate the facility and look after it like their own. !This makes a big difference for us and as we have seen over the past months, the number of “thank you’s” that we have received from residents that have stayed, only confirms in our minds that we have done what is needed and are making a difference with the help of many individuals together with Lions and Lioness Clubs. !!Since the opening last year, there have been over 150 individuals and families who have stayed with us from all around Australia and a couple from overseas. Our occupancy levels vary from month to month, sometimes we have to turn people away as we have all rooms filled and then others we can easily accommodate for their needs. !It varies so much… The message is certainly out there as we do receive a number of enquiries direct from Lions members for their family who may need to be accommodated. !!Once we know the availability, we can refer these through to the hospitals for confirmation. !The Lions House Foundation have recently updated their website which includes full details of the facility at: www.lionshouse.com.au!

Macedon Ranges farmers receive stock feed relief through Lions Club Feedbank By BARRY KENNEDY MACEDON RANGES LEADER Feb 18, 2015!

Edgecombe farmer Rob Pearse with Peter Henderson from Kyneton Lions Club. Picture: Carmelo Bazzano!!FARMERS around Black Hill and Pastoria with livestock that have gone short of food following fires earlier this summer can now access hay bales from a feedbank in Kyneton. !!The feedbank is being coordinated by Kyneton Lions Club and supported by efforts from Pakenham Lions Club and the Walking Forward Disaster Relief Team.!!Earlier this month, 100 hay bales arrived in Kyneton from farmers in Gippsland, while a local farmer has also contributed.!!Kyneton Lions Club secretary Peter Henderson said the club hoped the initiative dubbed Need for Feed will serve as an effective stopgap measure until about a dozen affected farmers can get on top of issues such as fencing and feed.!!“Lancefield and Romsey Lions Club ran a successful feedbank after the major fires last year and when we became aware there were people facing similar issues this year, we jumped in,” he said.!!“It’s the type of practical community work we like to get involved with and it’s clear some of these farmers really needed the help.”!!Almost 30 properties suffered fire damage this summer in the two areas, Mr Henderson said.!“So far we think 10 to 12 properties are going to need some assistance.”!Edgecombe olive grower Rob Pearce said his 11.3ha property had been badly damaged in fires on February 7, with all but one paddock burnt out.!!A hay shed which had 300 hay bales was burned to the ground as was half the olive grove.!While Macedon Ranges Council helped refill dams and offered up skips to clean up the property, his livestock have been relying on a few donations from friends and neighbours.!“We have seven horses, five alpacas and a sheep and with the pasture that survived we had about a month’s feed for the horses alone,” he said.!!Mr Pearce said without the “absolute Godsend” of the donated hay, they’d be moving their stock off the property entirely.!“After the autumn’s rain comes we should be right to rotate our stock through the paddocks a few weeks later, but those rains could come two weeks before Easter or two months after,” he said.!“It’s great now to know we have somewhere that we can call up and get some feed for these animals, and it’s something we’ll need for at least two more months.”!Macedon Ranges Mayor Jennifer Anderson said the community was again proving their resilience.!“This is a great example of volunteer groups coming together to support our community in a time of need,” she said.!!To donate feed, support the Need Feed initiative or join Kyneton Lions as a volunteer, contact Peter Henderson on 0457 038 488.!
