DEADLY WEAPON: On Thursday 11

July, officers at the Strand Police reacted

to information received about an illegal

firearm at a house in Liberty Street. A

search warrant was obtained and officers

searched the house, finding a shotgun

    and ammunition, which they confiscated.

The firearm, which is suspected of having

been used in a shooting incident in the

same street on 22 June, during which a

man (30) was fatally wounded, was re

ported stolen at the Gordons Bay Police

office. Two men, 43 and 20 years old,

were arrested and appeared in the

Strand Magistrates Court this past Mon

day. Pictured (from left) are Sergeant Os

wald Adams and Constables Faizel Sep

tember, Eugene Cloete and Reagan Truter

    dwelms in hegtenis geneem is.

    50 dae tronkstraf gevonnis.

    Suster oor suiker geslaan

on Friday 19 July on a charge of assault with the intent

    to do grievous bodily harm.

RenaldoMarthinus, Andr Swarts and Edward van der

    Merwe are facing these charges.

Marthinus testified that he is unemployed, notmarried

and has no children. He also has no previous convictions

and no pending cases against him.

InSwarts testimonyhe said thathe is alsounemployed,

unmarried and has one child. Hewas also previously con-

victed on a charge of being in possession of dagga.

Magistrate Karen Scheepers granted the men bail of

R1 000 each and instructed Swarts to stay at the residence

    of Marthinus.

    Voor die regbank

    VictoriaPark residents fightback

In recent months the residential ar-

    eaofVictoriaPark inSomersetWest

has fallen prey to a number of house

    break-ins and theft.

    These criminal activities range from

    clothing disappearing from washing

lines and cars being broken into to

    houses being burgled.

    According to Constable Suzan

    Jantjies, Somerset West police spokes-

person, an analysis by their criminal

    intelligence office confirms the occur-

rence of more than 10 reported break-

ins and theft from houses in the area

over the last six months. The analysis

also revealed that most cases occurred

in the morning and during the course

of the day when most people were at

    work.

    Criminals target homes which are

easily accessible; they look for opportu-

nities where curtains or blinds are left

open, a window or the garage is left

open, andwhere houses are not secure-

    ly locked.

    Otherwise, windows, doors and bur-

glar bars are forced open to gain entry

    to the properties, said Jantjies.

Items likely to get stolen are small

    itemssuchascameras,computerequip-

    ment, laptops, jewelleryandhousehold

    appliances.

In an attempt to stop break-ins and

theft, a neighbourhood watch was re-

cently established by residents of the

    third phase of Victoria Park.

    RitmaGrizane, who resides in Folke-

stone Street, recognised the need for

    good relations among neighbours, who

    often serve as watchdogs.

Ive noticed that with a number of

cases where a house or car was broken

into that the affected parties did not

    know their neighbours.

    Together with her sister-in-law, and

with help from the Community Police

    Forum (CPF), the neighbourhood

    watch was initiated.

At the first meeting held on 24 May,

    17 homes were represented.

    Each member of the neighbourhood

watch patrols the area during the day,

when they get the opportunity to do so.

Grizane also took it upon herself to

    create a Victoria Park neighbourhood

    watch blog (www.victoriaparksomer-

    setwest.blogspot.com) where residents

are updated on issues of interest to the

community and where they can find

    more information on the neighbour-

    hood watch.

    With residents building relation-

ships with their neighbours and the

    neighbourhood watch in action, one

    definitely feels more comfortable and

safer in the area, explained Grizane,

who keeps a watchful eye on the area

during her daily jogs or walks.

    ILLANA FRANTZ

Gedurende

daardie tydwas hy die gesig van Friedman

    & Cohen, bekende winkel-

    groep in die Strand, asook

    model vir bekende han-

    delsmerke.

    Gevolglik het hy toe be-

    sluit om iets daadwerkliks

    aan sy voorkoms te doen.

    Hy het deeglik navorsing

    gedoen en gevind dat be-

    kende persoonlikhede

Vandag, 15 jaar later, loop Cobus steeds

    verskeie advertensies, in-

    Met vroue is dit anders,

    want daar is baie maniere

vir hulle om jonger te lyk.

    Van grimering en klere-

    drag tot botoks en selfs

    plastiese snykunde, maar

met mans is dit net hul ha-

little unit and we are not going to

make it to the end of July.

We spoke to the City of Cape

Town andwere toldwe are on nor-

mal domestic tariff. Those on Life-

line Tariff receive some free units

    subsidised by us of course.

    What is normal about stagger-

    ing fromonedark room to another

at night because you want to save

on electricity? Or watching TV in

the dark orwith candles or unable

to roast that chicken on a Sunday?

Never enjoying a hot bath again

because its cheaper to shower or

going to sleep with your house in

darkness to advertise to the local

    burglars Hey, nobodys home.

For R900 per month, one would

    expect somekindof comfort?Then

    we discover that some friends,

who use their oven for two hours

a night, have their home linked to

    ADT, outside lights blaring that

NASA would pick up on it, have

    three TVs glowing around the

house for hours and never switch

of a light when they leave their

    room. They read their electrical

    metre andphone it in everymonth

and have about 700+ units for

    about 700 odd rand?

When we ask the electricity de-

partment howwe can get rid of the

prepaid box and go back to being

linked to the municipality, we are

told Sorry! It cant be done, even

though it was linked before? Who

is making money here? Who else

    out there believes something

    stinks?

    Regarding the Trek Netting

articles, I would like to thank

the DistrictMail for a job well

    done.

I am only one of the small

fish in the sea and one of the

    thousands of anglers in South

Africa, whose concern it is to al-

so preserve and protect our fish

    species and coastal fishing

    spots.

Hopefully one day before it is

    not to late, thepeoplewill realise

    Accidentson

    our roadson

    the increase

    During recent weeks the District-

    Mail featured several photographs

and stories of bad traffic accidents.

We received a number of calls

    from readers askingwhywe feature

    horrific traffic accidents so promi-

    nently on our front pages.

The reasons are to inform our

    readersofwhat ishappeningaround

them and to point out what may oc-

cur when drivers disobey the rules

of the road and drive recklessly.

More and more motorists take to

the roads every year and there are

    just not enough traffic officials

    around to enforce the laws.

It is also astonishing to see how

few motorists actually obey all the

    rules of the road.

The latest trends in road anarchy

    isnot to indicatewhenyouareabout

to turn and not to stop or even slow

    down at stop streets.

    Othermore common traffic viola-

tions which are seen in the Helder-

berg on a daily basis, include cell-

    phone usage while driving, going

through red robots, turning in front

    of oncoming cars, drinking while

    driving, double parking in busy

    streetsandnotusingseatbelts (driv-

    ers, passengers and especially chil-

    dren).

There are also many vehicles on

the road that are clearly not road-

worthy and should not be on the

    roads at all.

Unless these issues are not ad-

    dressed effectively and certainly, if

the number of traffic officials in our

area is not increased, these acci-

    dentswill continuetooccur, causing

    suffering andperhapsdeath to those

    involved.

    The book gave Gordons Bay-

    Fund running lowfor

    Julies children

Sunday 21 July marks the first

    anniversary of the death of

    JhovanneJulies, theHelderberg

    Crime Watch patrol officer who

died in the line of duty.

Julies, father of two, a son and a

    dedicated security officer, was an-

swering a call from a Neighbour-

    hoodWatcher in LourensfordRoad

in the early hours of that morning.

He gave his all to his job and he

    paid for itwith his lifewhenhewas

    fatally stabbed.

His young life was cut short and

    heleftnotonlyhisdevastatedelder-

ly parents, but also his two young

    children who were both dependent

on him, said Sandy Webster from

    the Somerset West Neighbourhood

    Watch (SWNHW).

    Shortly after Jhovannes death,

    Somerset West residents, especial-

ly members of the SWNHW, re-

    spondedgenerouslywhenaskedfor

    donations to help the family.

A small group of concerned peo-

ple started a fund for his children,

    Taylor(3)andMontel (9).Theyhave

since last year been greatly able to

help these children, one of whom

has special needs. Themoney is be-

ing used for their education and as-

    sociated costs.

    According to Webster, the dona-

    tions received last year amounted

to R24 704, and were deposited in a

special bank account for the chil-

    dren.Theaccount is jointlycontrol-

led by Peter Brand and Hugh Roe

    from the Helderberg Crime Watch

    (HCW) and by Jenny Findlay,

    SandyWebsterandRobHardingon

    behalf of the SWNHW.

The donations have been put to

    gooduseover thispast year, but the

fund is running low and an appeal

is made to the public for their help.

It is now one year since

    Jhuvonnes death and any dona-

    tionswould be greatly appreciated,

    to continue providing some meas-

ure of support to Taylor and Mon-

    tel, said Webster

To make a donation, or for more

    urgently need homes.

One of the cats is a young beautiful grey-

and-white cat and the other is her remaining

tabby female kitten of eight weeks old. Both

are in need of a loving forever home.

Themother is gentle and very affectionate

and both cats have been treated for worms

and have been inoculated. The mother cat

    will be sterilised this week.

It would be preferable if these two cats

    could be rehomed together.

The puppies in need of homes are cross

breed male pups and both are available for

    adoption.

These boys are about 12weeks old. The one

has wire-haired blood in his veins, and the

other one has short smooth hair.

They have been treated for fleas, and they

    have been de-wormed and inoculated.

They must be sterilised when old enough,

    Your third year in

    Heaven

    The moment that you

    left us, our hearts were

    split in two; one side

    was filled with memo-

    ries; the other side died

    with you. We often lay

    awake at night when

    the world is fast

    asleep; and take a walk

    down memory lane

    with tears upon our

    cheeks. Remembering

you is easy, we do it

    everyday, but missing

    you is a heartache that

    never goes away. We

    hold you tightly within

    our hearts and there

    you will remain, you

    see life has gone on

    without you, but will

    never be the same.
