Dreamin’ with Gov. Dave . . . With Spring just around the corner, I’ve been dream-in’ of new beginnings and a fresh start. I want to wake up in the mornings to the sounds of birds chirping, to warm sunny days, with trees budding to new life and flowers poking through the ground! That’s what energizes me and recharges my Optimistic can-do spirit! As we head into the second half of our Optimist Centennial year, let’s channel some of that new-found energy into positive action that will posi-tively impact more kids lives. Ask yourself, “What can I do each day, each week to make my little part of the world a better place, not only for me, but for all of us?”

The Optimist Creed
Promise Yourself
To be so strong that nothing can dis-turb your peace of mind. To talk health, happiness and pros-perity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. To look at the sunny side of every-thing and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achieve-ments of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living crea-ture you meet a smile. To give so much time to the im-provement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
Editor: Curt Sandberg THANKS to everyone that submitted articles for this newsletter. For those who wish to submit articles for future issues, please email them to me at [email protected] by the 27th of each month. Thank you!

Ask yourself, “Can I take two minutes and thoughtfully read and think about each tenant in the Optimist Creed? Can I take one ten-ant of that Creed and live it today? Then tomorrow, pick out a different tenant and live by that one all day. There are 10 tenants in the Creed, so I encourage you to pick out one each day and concentrate on “living” that tenant for the rest of that day. If you do that, I’ll promise you that you’ll be a happier, more productive person. How about it? Please give it a try for 10 days, and build each day on what you learned the day before. Then I invite you to join all the rest of our happy, Optimistic group at our 3rd Quarter gathering in Watertown – and again be inspired and uplifted by some amazing young people at the Oratorical contest. Seriously, please try this for 10 days – I double-dare you! Do it for yourself, your family, your business – and for the kids, because they need us more now than ever before! And, as the legendary newscaster Paul Harvey used to say, “now, for the rest of the story”! After you’ve re-energized yourself and your Optimistic spirit, let’s expand that to our clubs and our community. Let’s look at where we are on our road-map to success. Are we on track to meeting our individual and club goals? Have we invited one or two friends or co-workers to a service pro-ject or youth event, or to have breakfast or lunch or meet at a Happy Hour gathering of our other Optimist friends? Have we dedicated one or two or four hours in the last couple of months to help make a difference in the life of one or more child?

Have we invited someone who works with children on a daily basis to share some of their experiences with our Optimist group? Can we identify a “need” in our community that isn’t being met that would benefit the kids? Our challenge then, is to realize that the kids are a huge part of all that “new growth” that is springing up all around us, and we need to reach out (and get down to the kids level) and become a more dedi-cated Optimist – and be a part of nurturing that “new growth” that will soon become the leaders of tomorrow! Remember, each one of us can make a profound positive impact on a child’s life. Your dreamin’ Optimistic Governor, Dave Dave Martin DMM Governor [email protected]

Why Should Someone Join Your Club? The Continuous Improvement requirement for Level II of the Professional De-velopment Program (PDP) is to give a short presentation on why a prospective member should join your club. This is a great activity to incorporate into your club meetings. Encourage members to think about why they joined the club and give them a couple of weeks to prepare a short speech. At each meeting, the President can call on one or two members to give their reasons. Will you talk about the Optimist Creed, Optimist International’s mission, a favorite club activity, or how you feel when you help others? Why are you an Optimist? Share your reasons to encourage others to join your club! When you complete a PDP level, email your completed PDP form to [email protected] so that you can receive a certificate. Growth / Membership April Growth Target: Past Participants and Parents of Opti-mist Club Programs (Oratorical, Es-say, Golf, CCDHH, etc.) During the month of March, we brought in a total of 26 new members across the DMM District. Keep up the awesome recruitment efforts as the more Optimist members=greater the impact on the youth in our communities! Over the past few months, we have talked a lot about membership recruitment. I would like to touch on something just as important as recruitment: membership retention. It is vitally important that once we recruit new members to our Optimist Clubs that we get those members involved. One of the ways to accomplish that is hosting a new member luncheon once you have at least a couple new recruits. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy or formal, just meeting up at a local restaurant to chat with them about Optimist membership. When our club has a new member luncheon, we discuss the various programs and events that our Optimist club hosts throughout the year, answer any questions that they might have on Optimist and also have a sign-up sheet on hand with the encouragement to join one of our com-mittees. If people stay involved and active and see the value in being an Optimist member, they are less likely to drop their membership. Please consider having something like a new member luncheon as a way to get your new members off to a running start as an Optimist in 2019! Please join me in welcoming the new members below.

DMM District Dispatch Issue 18.19.06 March 2019
YOU can be a DMM difference maker! It has been a long winter, but today it is Spring. My thoughts turn to the future and the new life Spring brings. As your 2019-2020 incoming Governor for the DMM District I would like to have a team in place by April 30, 2019. This will give the team time to spring into action and smoothly fall into place come October of 2019. Are there members in your Op-timist Club that would be a good fit on the 2019-2020 DMM leadership team? You may be the person to bring a plethora of positive views, ideas and vision to the DMM District membership. I iMag-ine we can build a strong team when leadership that can travel together, visit in person, use social media to communi-cate and bounce ideas off each other as the year progresses. There are approximately 30 people that are elected or appointed to establish a District leadership team. There are four open leadership opportunities for your consideration. They are:
Recruitment, Mentoring, Retention = Membership Growth: As the chairperson you would be bringing a message of optimism to others. The message of optimism will expand your professional and personal net-working connections, advance your life goals and build on your resume skills to people across the Dakotas, Manitoba, and Minnesota. This OI link will provide you with information concerning membership growth duties: https://www.optimist.org/member/membership4.cfm
Junior Optimist clubs: Are you a person that relates to the young people between the ages of 6-19? If you are, then you are a person that can be a positive influence in our youth. Working with youth could advance your professional career, expand your resume or enhance your mentoring skills to the DMM youth. See more details at https://www.optimist.org/joi/joi1.cfm
Childhood Health and Wellness/Childhood Cancer: Have you, your family or someone you know experi-enced the journey of caring for and caring about a child through an illness? Would you like to advocate for preventative health and wellness projects? As chair you could influence children’s health/wellness and speak to the importance of supporting families through childhood illnesses. Find more information at: https://www.optimist.org/magazine/2019Winter/2019_Winter_TheOptimist.pdf
https://www.optimist.org/joi/joi1.cfm (page 26.)
Club Fitness: has a history of being tied to an incoming Governor Candidate. There are stepping stones that an individual can use to build the knowledge needed to streamline the task of governing the DMM District. If you have set a goal of building a foundation to develop your leadership skills on the road to Governor this would be the committee that could be of great benefit in your Optimist life, and in your professional and personal life. https://www.optimist.org/member/renew-refresh-revitalize.cfm
If you have read this article, are interested in a leadership role and are willing to commit to Bringing the Out the Best in Youth, in Yourself and in Your Community you need to email me at [email protected] or call at 605-651-3648 or I will reach out to you. Your expertise, commitment and knowledge of people are the needed ingredients for the DMM District. I have a deep desire to develop sustainable transformation at the district level that will create positive results on the local levels.

Optimist Supplies The upcoming DMM 3rd quarter meeting in Watertown will be another opportunity to obtain Optimist items for recognizing club members, speaker gifts, etc. April 12 is the deadline. You can save the shipping & handling by ordering through the DMM Boutique. Your order will be waiting for you in Watertown. Visit www.optimistsupply.ca to view some of what they offer. Call 1-800-5657062 and ask for Gillian. Tell her you are in the DMM and would like your order shipped with the DMM consignment order. The prices on the web site are listed in Canadian dollars so ND, SD & MN members should ask for the price in US currency. If you don't see what you need, ask her if they carry it. This is NOT a fundraiser for the DMM. We offer this ser-vice for you to save on shipping & handling charges. An-sell’s Awards is an authorized Optimist International dis-tributor and have provided excellent service to the DMM. For more information, please contact Heather Hawley at [email protected] Please note the pricing of items at the boutique will be in US funds and US dollars are required for payment. Thanks, Heather Hawley [email protected]
Vaping = teen epidemic! Just a sample of vaping paraphernalia is pictured above courtesy of an Olmstead County Public Health repre-sentative that spoke to the Rochester Optimist Club. Vap-ing is an addictive epidemic — 5,798 in Olmstead County alone — that is having a very dramatic negative impact on teens in each of our communities. Search out your local health expert to speak to your club about the dangers, trends, and cessation resources that are available. OR . . . Contact John Dockerty of the Rochester Club who can forward some information to you if you merely wish to present what he has been provided to your club. John Dockerty [email protected]

DMM Oratorical Contest We are getting near the Oratorical deadline so if you need the District information, go to the http://www.optimist-dmm.org to keep you on track! I need all the info no later, and we had to make it a tight dead-line because of some spring breaks, maybe even some snow (hope not that late) to get me the information I need! Carmen has asked that you turn in her form so she can let the hotel know by the 17th of April, you may need to estimate Lt. Governors as to who will be attending. Don't forget to get them a room at the hotel too! I suspect you all have reserved a room so far from your Clubs funds. If your Zone has only 1 competitor, you don't need to do a zone contest, just forward them on to the District. So several may already know who will be advancing and can take care of the paperwork now! Zone 3 in North Dakota has 1 contestant from the Fargo Club and the other clubs don't have any or are not doing the contest. The judges gifts are ordered, contestant awards done, engraver lined-up, pizza party {the ovens are warmed up}, roomed reserved, Carmen has the judges ready to score, oops, better check about SA and Timekeeper! I will be in Watertown on that Thursday May 2nd to get all my ducks in a row! Let me know if you have any ques-tions peeps! Dennis V Steffen DMM Oratorical Chair [email protected]
CCDHH - Communications Contest for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing I am excited as I have received my first entry in the mail for this con-test. It is my understanding there is another one on the way! We need three participants to hold a contest! Please let me know as soon as possible if your club is planning to sponsor a contestant! I have interpreters on reserve for this event and need to let them know if for any reason we do not have a contest! I am Optimistic that the great clubs of this district will come through and provide the entrants needed! Again, the topic is: “Is There a Fine Line Between Opti-mism and Reality?” Here is the link to Optimist International’s website for further information: https://www.optimist.org/member/scholarships2.cfm The District entry fee is $100. You can mail the entry form and supporting documents to me at: 21660 Imperial Ave N, Forest Lake, MN 55025 If you have any additional questions, don't hesitate to call me. Thank you. Lori Cook DMM CCDHH Chair 651-261-4312 [email protected]
Win Convention Registration! Barb Sul and Star Munch — or if they can’t attend, a member of their club — have already won registrations for the 2019 DMM Convention in Grand Forks August 8,9, & 10. Chances for you to win will be available in Watertown during the 3rd Qtr Gathering. If you won’t be in Watertown and want to participate, ask one of your fellow club members to purchase your chance to win. $5 / per chance, or $10 / 3 chances.

Memorial Photos
We would like to enhance the district’s annual memorial announcements at the DMM Convention next August in Grand Forks by including pictures of each of the deceased Optimists. Typically the best source for such photos is the funeral home’s obituary.
PLEASE forward the names of any member of your club that passed away between August 1, 2018 and August 1, 2019 AND the name of the funeral home that handled the arrangements to: [email protected].
Rather than wait until late July to try to remember all the deceased members and/or the funeral home, please send the Dispatch editor, Curt Sandberg, that info via the email link above as they occur.
Thanks for your help.
Looking for Candidates How about you? Do you have the desire, energy, longing, interest, or just plain “want” to be a future Governor. Think about it, you would be considering a po-sition serving as District Governor of the BEST district in all of Optimist International! We are currently seeking candidates for the years, 2021-2022 and beyond. Please consider this great opportunity and sit in on an information and Q&A session at the 3rd qtr conference in Watertown. I hope you will seriously consider this truly rewarding position and join me there, to discuss this great opportunity. Don Stover, Past Governor [email protected]

Leadership Development Your International Leadership Development Committee is looking for a little help. Each month the committee has scheduled and developed excellent 30 minute webinars designed for any and all members. These webinars take place the 2nd Monday of almost every month, at 7 pm Central Time. Each month is a new topic that is designed to benefit our Clubs, our Districts and most importantly this either directly or indirectly will benefit the children we serve. Watch the Optimist Hotline in your monthly emails for future topics. Thanks so much for helping us help you.
