SCENE

As I enter my second month as Chief Executive Officer, I know I still

have much to learn and understand about dnata Singapore. In the

coming weeks, I hope to meet many of you to help me quickly

come to grips with the task of leading this great company.

Singapore Changi Airport is one of the most important airports in the world and has a deserved reputation as a favourite of all the passengers who use it. This accolade is in no small part due to the efforts of all who work at the airport to ensure that it runs smoothly and efficiently, which clearly includes everyone who works at dnata Singapore. Maintaining this position demands dedication, commitment, hard work and delivery of excellence at all levels, all things that I see staff at dnata delivering.

There have been some significant changes in dnata Singapore recently, including a rebranding of CIAS to dnata Singapore, and of course this continues with the eagerly anticipated arrival of the new uniforms which I am sure you will agree are spectacular. There have also been some changes of personnel, not least the retirement of Mr Georgie Ong after many years as the CEO. The dynamic and ever changing business of aviation that we are in demands constant change and flexibility from everyone at dnata Singapore if we are to remain as a world class organisation at a world class airport.

I am confident that together we can maintain our position and I hope, like me, you will be proud to say that you work for dnata Singapore. And I look forward to meeting you all over the coming weeks as I get to know the organisation and I hope you will help me get a better understanding of the company.

I would like to finish this short message by paying tribute to Georgie, he has successfully guided dnata Singapore over the last 35 years and is handing over a dynamic, successful and world class organisation for my safe keeping. I hope that I can carry on the work that Georgie has started and build on his legacy.

I am sure that you will all join me in wishing Georgie well in his retirement and thanking him for all his work over the years.

Closer Safety Watch

Airport Heroes They are the unsung personalities who go beyond their call of duty and seldom get the limelight.

Here we single out three airport heroes who deserve a genuine pat-on-the-back.

Tractor driver Gobinath A/L Gunasegaran averted a near collision when an Air Asia flight approached the designated stop-bar for A320 at the bay. The flight in-charge was unable to see the display on the ADGS due to the glare from the setting sun. The pilot and co-pilot were also misguided by the faulty ADGS. Seeing this, Gobinath immediately crossed his hands to indicate “stop” to the co-pilot, averting a potential collision with the aerobridge.

Min Min Htike prevented a potential fire incident with his quick reflexes during a routine procedure. While he was carrying out an inspection of the air starter unit’s function ability, Min noticed something was amiss and immediately contacted the Control Supervisor to arrange for the faulty equipment to be sent to Maintenance Base.  His swift action prevented a potential fire breaking out.

Duty Manager Roimi bin Anwari prevented a catastrophic scene when he spotted a stray maintenance step that did not belong to dnata blown by strong winds onto the grass verge between South Cross 1 & 2. His prompt alert meant that the recovery of the step could be carried out as there was another aircraft on hold for departure. Otherwise, the runaway step would have rolled onto the taxiway and hit a stationary aircraft.

The Safety & Health Department presented the three airport heroes with $50 shopping vouchers and letters of commendation.

The first session was conducted by Senior Manager Jason Tan and Manager Safety Bernard Sim, who shared with all present on accident stats, injury stats and recent incidents/accidents.

At the end of each session, staff members are required to take part in a safety quiz to ensure that all key aspects are clearly understood.

With these new initiatives in place, together, we will work towards making safety a key priority in dnata Singapore.

As the proverb goes, “Accidents do not happen, they are caused”, there is never too much emphasis on maintaining safety standards in the work place. To ensure that this key message is clearly communicated, new daily shift briefings have been implemented during 10:30am and 5:30pm.

Delivered by the managers on duty, these briefings focus on safety and service quality issues which have been accepted as a part of standard operating procedures. Seen as a welcome move by most, these sessions are also meant to provide a platform for staff members to raise questions or potential safety issues previously not highlighted.

The management too weighed in on the importance of safety with the introduction of new weekly Leadership Safety Briefings. These hourly sessions are held every Friday and include reviews of any accidents or near miss over the week. Members from the management and the Safety Team show their full support with their attendance.

Our heroes (L to R), Gobinath A/L Gunasegaran, Roimi bin Anwari, Min Min Htike with interim Vice President of Ground Services, Chris Hutchinson (second from right).

Ensuring that the safety message is brought home.

Briefings on safety and quality service issues are now daily affairs.

Top Priority For Safety

Staff members listening attentively to the Opening Speech on the first day of the “mass communication” session.

Best Safety Slogans

Since 2 April 2012, the safety-message on Zero Tolerance on Safety Performance has been on the cards. Leading the way was the CEO, who gave the inaugural Opening Speech on the first day of the “mass communication” session with Vice President of Ground Services giving his address on the second day.

The session started with statistics of past years’ safety performances, factors that affected the performances and the need to comply with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure that work was always carried out safely.

To instill greater awareness, the Safety and Health Department launched the Safety Slogan Competition, with attractive prizes of between $100 and $300 in cash and other goodies.

The competition was open to all dnata staff (including part-time employees) and sub-contractors. Surprisingly, the competition drew an overwhelming response of 390 submissions.

About 30 entries were rejected due to incompliance with rules, said Mr Bernard Sim, Safety & Health Manager, and the remaining 360 submissions are being sorted for the best entries.

The winners will be announced in the next issue.

The bottom-line message to every staff: dnata’s corporate direction which places “safety as first” in every action.

Particular attention was driven home to key personnel, such as the teams from Apron Operations (including Budget & Private Jet Handling and Baggage Operations), Cargo and Catering Dispatch, many of whom are in the frontline.

Importance Of Zero Tolerance

There is no compromise for safety, which remains the highest priority.

To drive home the importance of work-place safety, senior management is now directly involved in the monthly safety inspections at the operating sites, weekly shopfloor leadership safety briefings and monthly mass communication safety sessions.

The key inspection areas include: (1) Apron, Budget & Private Jet handling, Office Rest Area, Bays, Budget Terminal; (2) Cargo Terminal, Cargo Bays, and Maintenance Base; (3) Flight Catering and Corporate Building; (4) Passenger Services, VIP Lounges, and Priority Check-in.

In the monthly inspection held earlier in the year, CEO Georgie Ong; interim Vice President of Ground Services Chris Hutchinson; visiting Vice President of Ground Operation Risk Management, Dubai, Simon Hawker; together with Head of Departments from Apron and BPH, and members of the Safety & Health Department visited some aircraft bays. They inspected crews operating the wide-bodied aircraft and narrow-bodied aircraft. They also covered the Baggage Operation and the Baggage Lost and Found Office inside the terminal.

A debrief was conducted at the end of the inspection to discuss the observations made and the necessary action items needed to improve the ground services safety performance. Similar monthly safety inspections are being carried out by the senior management team members.

New ‘Image’ Uniforms

A sparkling new image for dnata will come with the unveiling of a new, high quality uniform for staff worldwide.

Garments with a sharp, modern-tailored new look will be produced for frontline staff and for staff working out on the ramp, cargo and ground handling areas. All the designs have been exclusively created for dnata in Dubai.

The launch has been greatly anticipated. The design and development phase took 12 months and more than 300 staff across all areas and regions were involved in the entire process. Team members from six of dnata’s international businesses have been putting on trial individual garments in their workplace and providing valuable feedback.

“The new uniform is an attitude. It instills pride. This eye-catching new look and unique range of pieces express what dnata is all about,” said dnata President, Mr Gary Chapman. “Staff will not only look good but we are confident they will be proud to wear it. We want to show staff we value the role they play in the success of the business and that we are making an investment in them.”

The journey started when a tender to develop a new uniform consistent with dnata’s global brand proposition went out to 10 companies from five countries. Four were shortlisted. After being presented with a range

The new uniforms are expected to make a splash.

The sharp and modern look.

Poly Internship ProgrammeLearning the work-ropes is part-and- parcel of knowing the aviation industry.

dnata recently accepted interns from Temasek Polytechnic (eight undergraduates from Diploma in Aviation Management and Services, one from Diploma in Applied Food Science & Nutrition) and Republic Polytechnic (one undergraduate from Diploma in Civil Aviation).

The management has been actively accepting interns in recent years as part of a long-term project to expose them to the industry. The student internship programme, which lasts over five to six months, is part of their three-year diploma course.

“This is a great opportunity for the interns as they would have a better understanding of industry standards and requirements and get hands-on experience of what was previously

of impressive, innovative concepts, Mr David Sprakes from A. Ronai LLC, was selected.

His initial ideas then went through almost a dozen different drafts over the next few months before the style and fabrics were finally selected, ensuring the eventual design works well with all skin tones and body shapes.

The uniforms make use of easy-to-care-for, comfortable-to-wear fabric which features a triangular shaped pattern in dnata’s signature shades of lively blue and refreshing green. All these were inspired by the new dnata logo which was introduced last April.

The result? Outfits that not only look attractive, but are functional and suitable for workplace conditions.

“I promised staff from the outset that we would give them something head-turning, which they will love to wear. The feedback I’ve received from staff so far shows we’ve achieved that,” added Mr Chapman. “If our staff looks good, they are more motivated. That’s great for our business and customer service.”

“I’ll probably wear that on a night out,” said a dnata staff. Another added: “Wow, I love it, I want to wear it home.”

Staff of dnata Singapore, led by CEO Georgie Ong and CFO Goh Hui Chen, witnessed the launch, via web, on 27 March 2012, at dnata Singapore Corporate Building, Auditorium. Those who have seen it are also raving about the new uniform, excited to wear the new look and perform their work duties in style.

taught in textbooks and classrooms,” said a dnata spokesman. “The interns would have the opportunity to take responsibility of their own learning and to develop life-long skills, such as effective communication and interpersonal skills which are important in any industry.”

Through this internship programme, dnata wants to give back to the aviation industry by teaching and training the younger generation in order to be better prepared before they start their respective careers.

The interns have been posted to 10 different departments: Marketing & Business Development, Training & Development, Ground Services Engineering, Quality Assurance & Service Support, Passenger Services, Apron Operations, Facilities & Flight Kitchen Engineering Department, Budget & Private Jets Handling, Human Resource and Catering Services Quality Assurance Department.

Outfits that are attractive and functional.

Interns from Temasek Polytechnic and Republic Polytechnic will receive teaching and training.

Higher Skies For Air France

Air France is going to set remarkably high standards for future flying.

It made its inaugural flight from Paris to Singapore on the Airbus A380 on 4 June. The flight operates out of the Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport and Changi Airport, Terminal 1.

The daily flight capacity between the two cities will be increased by 30 per cent, with the introduction of the 516-seat carrier on the Singapore-Paris route, the airline said. It added that the A380s will “substitute the introduction on additional flights in May”.

Tracing the record books, in November 2009, Air France became the first European airline to operate the wide-bodied aircraft. Now, A380 aircraft will service New York (JFK), Johannesburg, Washington D.C., Montreal, Singapore, Los Angeles and Tokyo. In total, the fleet will comprise 12 aircraft with this type.

The welcoming ceremony for the A380 at Changi Airport Terminal 1 was lined up to be a five-star event with a formal water-salute to herald the flight’s entry. Following champagne-drinks-reception, the guests were taken for a formal tour of the aircraft.

Confident of Singapore as a potential market, General Manager of Air France KLM (Singapore, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand) Mr Paul Rombeek said that the airline is committed to the South East Asia region and wants to capitalise on the good market conditions here.

“Air France aims to strengthen its position in Asia and Singapore is a key travel hub in South East Asia and the Pacific,” he added.

In Singapore, Air France and KLM operate 14 weekly flights between Singapore and Paris or Amsterdam.

From June, the Air France service will be increased to three times a week and the demand will be supplemented with a four-time weekly service via the Boeing 777-300 flights.

For the record, the A380s of Air France are configured in four classes with total seats of 516. There are 9 first class La Premiere seats which are located on the main deck, followed by 80 business class seats and 38 premium voyageur class seats. The economy class, with 389 seats, is divided between two decks.

CEO Mr Georgie Ong congratulates Mr Paul Rombeek, General Manager, Air France-KLM (Singapore, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand).

A new milestone for Air France and dnata.

Big Catch

CHECKING-IN@dnata

What an unexpected catch: Zailaini Bin Mastan surprised with a 3.59kg sea-bass at the dnata Club fishing competition.

This won him the “heaviest catch” prize, in which about 40 staff and guests took part at Pasir Ris Tac Pond on 24 March 2012.

Second place went to Mohamad Bin Hirman Atan (2.78kg snapper) and the other big catchers were Fadly Bin Salleh (2.70kg snapper), Ahmad Bin Said (2.05kg threadfin), Stephen S/O Selaiyan (1.72kg threadfin) and Saravanan S/O Taigrajan (1.60kg threadfin).

The prizes were presented by the CEO, Georgie Ong. Other senior management present included SMCG, Teo Ching Kang and Acting Vice President (Human Resource), Goh Hui Chen.

The organisers have hailed it as a “very successful and eventful day…with everyone going home with a good catch!”

Getting First-Hand Knowledge

Students from Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) got a first-hand feel of flight-kitchen operations on 11 April 2012.

The NYP familiarisation tour was arranged by the dnata Employees Union and held at dnata Singapore Corporate Building Auditorium.

The students, from a mixture of diploma courses, first visited dnata Flight Catering, where they were shown the entire flight kitchen production area.

They were later given an introduction on dnata and ground operations by Assistant Training Manager, Abidah Abdullah.

‘Makan’ Delight In Johor

Johor, just across the Causeway, is always a popular destination to get value-for-money with the Singapore dollar! Food-wise, too, as a recent day-long “makan” tour which was organised on 14 April 2012, proved.

The day started with breakfast at a mushroom farm followed by a visit to a vegetable farm, where visitors were treated to light snacks such as kueh kueh and fresh fruits.

Next was a stopover at a noodle factory where authentic Foo Chow noodles are made. Much to the delight of noodle lovers, the visitors got a taste of noodles, fish balls, red-wine chicken and fried sweet potatoes, all well-known local specialties.

After the hearty meal, and in the spirit of true Singaporeans, it was off to the Sutra Mall and Johor Premium Outlets for shopping.

The feastful day ended with an eight-course dinner at Pekin Restaurant at Sutera Utama.

The winner, Zailani Bin Mastan (with hat), with his prized catch and senior management, (L to R), Teo Ching Kang, Georgie Ong and Goh Hui Chen.

All ready for the big day out.
