Don Showalter Earns Unprecedented Fifth-Don Showalter Earns Unprecedented Fifth-Straight USA Basketbal l Coaching AwardStraight USA Basketbal l Coaching Award

At the helm of the DNT since its inception in 2009, Don ShowalterDon Showalter (IowaCity H.S.) has helped USA Basketball collect five-straight gold medals, includingthe DNT’s most recent gold at the 2013 FIBA Americas U16 Championship. OnJan. 6, USA Basketball announced Showalter as a co-recipient of the 2013 USABasketball Developmental Coach of the Year, an honor he shared with SuePhillips (Archbishop Mitty H.S.), who led the USA U16 women to gold. Thehonor was an incredible fifth-straight such award for Showalter, who becamethe first coach to be honored by USA Basketball five times.

On board as the DNT head coach through at least next summer’s 2014FIBA U17 World Championship in Dubai, Showalter wil l look to continue hiswinning ways.

Center in Portland, Ore., the 2014 Nike HoopSummit will see 10 of America’s best highschool seniors against a World Select Teamcompiled by Nike that features the best international talent age 19 years old oryounger.

2014 FIBA U17 World2014 FIBA U17 WorldChampionshipChampionship

Set for Aug. 8-16 in Dubai, UnitedArab Emirates, the 2014 FIBA U17 WorldChampionship wil l feature 16 U17 national teams from around the world.

Since the inaugural U17 event in2010, the USA has compiled a perfect16-0 record and won gold in both 2010and 2012.

The 12-man U.S. roster wil l benamed prior to the tournament in lateJuly or August, and it will be comprisedof members of the 2013-14 DNT.

To be eligible for this competition,players must have been born on or afterJan. 1, 1997.

2014 FIBA Americas2014 FIBA AmericasU18 ChampionshipU18 Championship

The dates and site for the 2014FIBA Americas U18 Championship arestill to be determined, but the eventwill qualify four of the participatingteams for the 2015 FIBA U19 WorldChampionship. The 2014 U.S. teamwill be looking to capture a third-straight gold medal at the event.

USA Basketball will conduct atraining camp prior to the competitionduring which the 12-member rosterwill be selected.

To be el igible for this event,players must have been born on orafter Jan. 1, 1996

2014 Youth Olympic Games2014 Youth Olympic GamesThe 2014 Youth Olympic Games, which feature

3x3 basketball and a dunk contest, will take placefrom Aug. 16-28 in Nanjing, China, and twenty teamsare expected to participate in the men’s basketballtournament.

In the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in 2010,the USA men's team, which featured K.C. Caudill, Angelo Chol, Sterling Gibbs and Brandan Kearney, finished with a 5-2 record and in fourthplace after falling to Greece 34-25 in the bronzemedal game.

The 2014 U.S. team will be comprised of fourplayers, and athletes eligible for this competitionmust have been born between Jan. 1, 1996 and Dec. 31, 1997.

A veteran of three USA teams, Aaron GordonAaron Gordonnot only helped the USA to a gold medal at the2013 FIBA U19 World Championship, he was namedMVP of the tournament, and on Jan. 14, he wasnamed the 2013 USA Basketball Male Athlete of theYear.

“It’s a great honor,” Gordon said. “USA Basketball is a really good program. I respecteverybody associated with USA Basketball, so forthem to recognize me as Male Athlete of the Yearis an incredible feel ing.”

Coming off the bench, Gordon averagedteam-highs of 12.6 points and 6.2 rebounds pergame. He also scored nine points for the 2013USA Nike Summit Team, which fell to the WorldTeam 112-98.

Gordon started with USA Basketbal l on the2011-12 DNT, and he won his first gold medal atthe 2011 FIBA Americas U16 Championship.

In being named the 2013 USA Basketball MaleAthlete of the Year, he joins a list of honoreesthat includes LeBron JamesLeBron J ames (2012), J abar iJabar iPa rkerParker (2011) and Kev in DurantKev in Du rant (2010).

“There are a couple of guys on that list that Ireally look up to, so to be affil iated with them is atremendous honor," Gordon told ESPN.com’s DanaO’Nei l. "LeBron James, that's almost surreal to bein the same category as him."

Members of the inaugural DNT in 2009-10, Bradley Beal andAndré Drummond on Jan. 23 were named to the 2014-16 USABasketball Men’s National Team pool. That means that while trainingwith the MNT, they will be battling for roster spots on the U.S. teamsthat will play in the 2014 FIBA World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.

“I am thrilled to be able to continue to compete as a memberof USA Basketball, and I look forward to the chance to represent mycountry,” said Beal. “Being part of this team is a tremendous honorand a great opportunity for me to learn and develop as a player.”

“I’m extremely honored to be selected along with this talentedgroup of players for an opportunity to represent my country,” Drummond said. "I look forward to competing and representing ourfans the right way."
