Welcome to Do Downtown Greenville is an initiative of several

downtown merchants, restaurants, and hotels in partnership

with the Greenville Journal. Our goal is to communicate

to residents and visitors alike everything our downtown

has to offer. Downtown Greenville presents opportunities

unlike any other with noteworthy shops, remarkable

restaurants, visual and performing arts venues, beautiful

green spaces, and more. The redevelopment vision of the

City of Greenville is to have “a thriving Downtown which

is recognized nationally as an example of a ‘state-of-the-art’

community in which to live, work, and play… which serves

in itself as a national attraction.”

Mission accomplished.

Downtown Greenville is home to more than 90 shops

and 90 restaurants. If you can’t find it here, chances are it

can’t be found!

Another component of Do Downtown Greenville is a

focus on all things local. Shop local. Eat local. Support local.

When you shop local, you help support our community.

Many of our friends, neighbors, and families are employed

by, or own, these businesses that bring special products,

services, and variety to Greenville. Make the commitment

to shop local this holiday season and know the joy of

supporting our community – one of the greatest gifts of all.

Thank you to the Greenville Convention & Visitors Bureau,

City of Greenville, Carol Stewart, Greg Beckner, & Kristy Adair for contributing photos to this issue.

SiP to offer a view with your drinkIf you’re ready to enjoy fresh air and views

of the twinkling lights on Greenville’s Main Street with an after-work cocktail or drinks with friends, SIP wine bar may be your kind of place. Due to open in late March, the rooftop spot is the newest restaurant from Jason Fletcher, who also owns The Green Room and Ford’s Oyster House and Cajun Kitchen.

The elevated tasting room and lounge, located on the Piazza Bergamo above Proaxis Therapy, will offer more than 40 wines by the glass along with two-, four- or six-ounce tastings. SIP will also feature a menu of small offerings like cheese boards, dessert and pizzas created by Chef Patrick Long of The Green Room.

Fletcher said the lofty concept will appeal to a city that savors the outdoors. “Everybody in Greenville loves being outside,” he said,

“so we felt a rooftop bar would complement downtown.”

In the 1,500-square-foot interior, Fletcher said that he is aiming to reproduce something similar to a wine-tasting room in Napa with a bar and a 1,000-bottle, lighted wine wall crafted by Kessick Wine Cellars. The idea is to offer education on “anything to do with taste,” said Fletcher – from wine and food to beer and spirits. And all of it can be enjoyed on the 3,500-square-foot outdoor space.

The tasting room will also take advantage of the knowledge of beverage experts who normally meet with restaurateurs every week, said Fletcher. Members of the SIP Society will get notifications of the special events, like samplings, seminars and meet-and-greets, with industry insiders and vintners, he added.

Charles Kuralt, the late CBS “On the Road” correspondent and host of the “Sunday Morning” television show, once called Mast General Store the place he’d send somebody to get to know the soul of the South.

Its stores were in vintage build-ings with olden wooden floors that creaked when customers walked from displays of Burt’s Bees lip balm to dis-

plays of wool socks and hiking boots, from cast-iron pots to barrels upon barrels of candy.

Mast General Store celebrates its 10th anniversary in downtown Greenville this month. Eight of the store’s original employees still work there today, a testament to the employee-owned company’s culture of treating people right and giving back to the community.

When Mast General opened on March 20, 2003, it wasn’t the only retail store in downtown Green-ville – but it could very well have been the most important. In the years before Mast General’s arrival in Greenville, downtown retail was basically confined to about two blocks on North Main.

After a protracted legal battle that kept Jillian’s, a Kentucky-based restaurant-bar and billiard estab-lishment, out of One Main Place, the city found itself owner of the cavernous building that had been a retail landmark in the city since the late 1800s, most notably as the “old Meyers-Arnold.”

Mayor Knox White cold-called Mast General Store owner John Cooper, telling him, “We’ve got a building with a creaking wooden floor and a steel ceiling. It would make a perfect Mast General Store.”

Cooper, who was in the middle of opening a store in Hendersonville, told White that he’d come look at the building in a year— if it was still available.

White said before Cooper decided to make Greenville the first location of Mast General Store outside of North Carolina, he had an instance of buyer’s remorse, wondering if Mast Gen-

eral Store was really what down-town needed.

It took one trip to Mast’s Asheville store —seeing a store packed with people and stocked with quality merchandise—to convince him it was exactly what downtown needed.

The company gets calls every week from cities and towns that want a Mast General Store.

“The idea of Mast General Store as an economic development tool—we started that,” White said. “Mast General Store was a life raft to retail downtown. It showed that retail could come back to down-town. Having a bar in that location would have killed retail before it got started.”

On the morning the store opened, there was a long line of people waiting to get in.

“We’re a destination,” said Mary Nase, the Greenville’s store general manager.

The store did an incredible amount of candy sales in the begin-

ning, she said. “We were a big destination for older adults who remember candy from their child-hood.”

A year later, toy store O.P. Tay-lor’s opened next door to Mast General Store.

“Almost from day one, Mast General Store was bringing retail in,” White said. “We proved the nay-sayers wrong.”

Anthropologie, another “destination” retailer, will open this month in the new ONE development and men’s suit specialist Brooks Brothers announced recently it is coming, too.

“2013 will really be the year when we turn the corner,” White said. “Retail is always the last thing. First you have to have office, then residential, and retail follows that. Ten years ago, we had to recruit residential development to come downtown. We don’t have to recruit residential any more. I think we’re getting to the point where we will no longer have to

recruit retail, either.”Nase said Mast General Store

welcomes more retail to downtown Greenville and on Main Street.

“It just brings more people here,” she said. “We’re very proud to be here. We thank Greenville for a great 10 years, and we look forward to many, many more.”
