    Whatisit?

    GoogleoffersafreeservicesthatallowslivestreamingtoyourYouTubechannelviaGoogle+.Theprocessiseasyandusesconsumerequipmentlikeyourlaptopandawebcam,andwillautomaticallysaveyourlivestreamwhenyourefinishedtoyourYouTubechannelasastandardYouTubevideo.Thisserviceisperfectforinstructorswhomightwanttostreamorrecordspeciallectures,Powerpoints,presentations,etc.withouttheneedforcostlyequipmentorextrastaff.WhileyouwillnotgetabroadcastTVqualityproduct,theproductisgood,andisagreatalternativetosimplyprovidingtextlikejournalarticlesorhandouts.

    TheadvantagetoYouTubeisthatitisacompletelycloudbasedservicethatseasytouse,andisscalablebasedontheviewershardware.IfthestudentisabletowatchanystandardYouTubevideo,theywillbeabletowatchyourlivestreamwithnoissues.

    Whatyoullneedtogetstarted:

    1. Laptopordesktopcomputeryoucouldusethepodiumcomputerintheclassroomorprovideyourownlaptop.

    2. WebcamanexternalHDwebcamcanbeborrowedfromtheEducationalTechnologydepartment.Thesewebcamsarelikelyofhigheraudioandvideoqualitythanabuiltinwebcam.Ifyoupreferyouaremorethanwelcometouseyourown.

    3. AYouTube/Googleaccount(coveredinStep1below.)

    Usageguidelines:

    1. WilmingtonUniversityCodeofConductrememberthatthisbroadcastwillbegoingoutliveonYouTube,toanyoneontheInternetwhomightstumbleacrossit.RememberthatyouarerepresentingWilmingtonUniversity.(Afterthelivestreamisfinishedandarchivedyouwillhavetheoptiontochangethesavedvideofiletoprivateorunlisted,ifyouprefer.)

    2. Copyrightedmaterialusingcopyrightedmaterialonline,outsideoftheFairUsedoctrine,couldresultinremovingofyourfilesfromYouTube,orsuspensionorterminationofyourYouTubeaccount.

    3. BroadcastingstudentsTheEducationalTechnologydepartmentrequiresthatifthisserviceisusedtobroadcastorrecordstudentsinanywaythatthestudentssignareleaseform.(locatedbelow)

    BestPractices:

    1. Positionthecameraasclosetothepresenteraspossible.Youwillbeabletoseewhattheshotlooksliketothevieweratthebottomofthescreen.Sincethemicrophoneisgenerallybuiltintothewebcam,positioningthecameraascloseaspossiblewillprovidethebestaudiopossible.

    2. Ifyouareansweringquestions,repeatthequestionbackbeforeyouanswer,sincetheviewerswillnotbeabletohearthequestionsfromtheaudienceinthevideo.

    3. UseahardwiredInternetconnection,NOTwifi.Ifyoureusingthepodiumcomputertheywillalreadybehardwiredintheclassroom.Ifnot,thereareEthernetjacksinmost(ifnotall)classrooms.UseaCAT5cabletoconnectyourcomputertotheEthernetjackinsteadofwifi.CAT5isthestandardEthernetcable,ifyoudonthaveonealreadytheycanbefoundeverywhere,evenmostdollarstores.

    4. Makesureyourdefaultrecordingdeviceissetforyourwebcam:

    Notethatyourmicrophonemightshowadifferentbrandofwebcam,orevenagenericUSBaudiodevice,dependingonwhatwebcamyouuse.Theaudiometertotherightwillshowgreenbarstoindicatethatthewebcamisreceivingaudio,thiswillhelpyoudeterminethatyouvepickedtherightdevice.

    5. Testeverythinginyoursetupinadvanceofyourplannedeventremember,practicemakesperfect!Themoreyoutestthebetteryourbroadcastwillbeintheend.

    6. RecommendedVerifyyourYouTubeaccountsoyoucanstorevideoslongerthan15minutes.(SeeAddendumbelow.)

    Insteadofsharingyourwholedesktop,Hangoutsoffersyoutopickfromanyopenwindoworscreeninadditiontoyourdesktop.Forexample,youcanshareaPowerpointpresentation,yourwebbrowser,oranythingelseonyourcomputerinsteadofyourwholedesktop.(Thatisalsoanoptionofcourse.)

    ProTip:IfyouresharingaPowerPoint,rememberthatitopensinanewwindowwhenyouviewtheslideshow,sounlessyoureusingadualmonitorsetup,youllwanttoselectDesktoporFullscreentoshare,thenviewyourPPTasnormalinPowerPoint.

    Step7Makesureyourvideoandaudiodevicesareconfiguredcorrectly.IfyoureseeingyourwebcamintheHangoutswindowyourvideoisalreadygood.Youshouldalsoseetheaudiometerlightingupwhenyoutalk(seriesofdotsnexttotheStartBroadcastbutton.)Eitherway,youllwanttoclickonthegeariconinthetoprightcornertocheckyoursettings.

    Ifyoureusingadifferentcamera,headset,microphone,etc.youmightneedtoselecttheappropriatedevicefromthemenus.WhenyouredoneclickSaveSettings.

    Step8Wheneverythingisready,clicktheStartBroadcastatthetopoftheHangoutwindow.

    ClickingtheEmbedlinknexttotheStartBroadcastbuttonwillgiveyouadirectYouTubelinkyoucansharewithyourstudentssotheycanwatchyourlivebroadcastonYouTube.OryoucangivethemthelinktoyourYouTubechannelandyourlivebroadcastwillappearautomaticallyinyourvideolist.
