DESCRIPTION
Being a police officer with the Decatur Police Department is challenging and rewarding. Working in a town of approximately 60,000, our officers have two distinct advantages. Officers are able to get to know the people in the communities they serve; the ratio of officers to civilians is about 1 to 454. With approximately 130 officers and more than 10 specialty areas, the Decatur Police Department is a great size to provide officers with excellent opportunities for growth and career advancement.

Career Opportunities
Crime Prevention Offi cer – organize neighborhood watches and use crime prevention training to build a safer community
Crime Scene Investigator – use forensic clues to solve crimes
Criminal Investigator – investigate major crimes such as robberies and murders
K-9 Offi cer – patrol the streets to keep drugs out of our community
Patrol Offi cer – be on the front lines assisting citizens and crime victims
Organized Crime Unit – investigate drug crimes, gather intelligence, work undercover operations, and conduct search warrants

Selection Process
Because police offi cers hold vital positions in
the community that require the trust of all our
citizens and visitors, the selection process for
becoming a Decatur police offi cer is lengthy and
comprehensive. The process consists of several
stages, including a physical agility and abilities
test, a written exam, a background investigation,
an interview, a polygraph examination, a
psychological examination, a medical and physical
examination, and a drug screening.
Police Academy graduates start out as
patrol offi cers, but will have opportunities for
advancement.
Minimum Requirements
• High school diploma or GED equivalent
• Valid Alabama driver’s license
• At least 21 years of age
• United States citizen
• No felony convictions, indictments, or pending cases in any state
• No misdemeanor conviction or pending case involving domestic violence or moral turpitude
• Former members of the U.S. armed forces must provide proof of honorable discharge
