Welcome to the Spring edition of the magazine. Hopefully Spring will soon spring so we can enjoy the sunshine in the garden and I can save myself a mint on bird food, though I must say I enjoy watching their antics as they quarrel over the same bit of food! I looked out of my window this morning and saw what seemed to be a flock of seagulls hovering above my washing line but only one had the nerve to land.

Mobile operators are offering 4G mobile services across the UK. 4G enables mobile devices such as smartphones, laptops and tablets to access the internet at super-fast speeds. This is driving innovation in business, entertainment, education and public services and helps the UK stay competitive in an increasingly digital world.

Both 4G mobile services and digital TV use parts of the radio spectrum, that is bands of frequencies, to reach us. The 800 MHz frequencies used by some 4G services are next to the frequencies used for Freeview.

TVs and set-top boxes that receive Freeview may have the TV service blocked by these 4G signals; there is a very small chance this may cause interference to your Freeview service. Cable and satellite services will not be affected.

If we believe the TV interference might be due to new mobile signals, and you do not have satellite or cable services, we can arrange for an at800 engineer to visit your home, at no cost. Alternatively, if you prefer, we can send you a filter to fit yourself, free of charge. Full instructions are included and we can provide further advice online and by phone.

ST LUKE’S CHURCHSpring is in the air and we have been enjoying blue skies and warm sunshine. The trees are beginning to blossom and the daffodils have been giving us a fantastic display. In St Luke’s Church we have been busy preparing for, and celebrating, Easter at the end of March – the highlight of the Christian year, when we celebrate Jesus defeating death by rising again. Our reflections through Lent were based around the Methodist Collection of Modern Art which has been on display in Lincoln Cathedral.

April finds us still in Easter mode as we head for Ascension Day (May 5 th) and Pentecost (May 15th). There will be a different style of celebration each week in our Churches – but everyone will find a warm welcome. Some people have wondered what our different service names all mean, so let us explain:

April 3rd at 11.15am – Cluster Communion in St Helen’s Church, Stickford. The Church in Stickney is part of a wider Cluster comprising Christians in Stickney, Stickford and Eastville with Midville and New Leake. On the first Sunday in each month we gather in one of our Churches to celebrate a Communion service together. (Another word for Communion is Eucharist).

April 10th at 9.30am – Morning Worship. This is a service which benefits from creativity and flexibility – basically no two services are the same. You can expect hymns and readings, reflections and prayers as we worship God together. Often this service is led by our Accredited Local Ministers, who free up Rev. Fran to visit other Churches as part of her wider Diocesan Role.

April 17th at 11.15am – All Age Worship. This is a service which is specifically aimed at families worshipping together – those who are young and those who are young at heart. We welcome the music group ‘The New Name’ to lead our worship, and we usually have activities to do together as part of that worship.

April 24th at 9.30am – Holy Communion. This is a service in which we share bread and wine together as Jesus encouraged his followers to do.

Everyone is welcome at any of the services, either on a Sunday as stated, or at our regular Thursday morning prayer services at 9.00am. This is followed by a weekly coffee morning at 10.00am. Why not give us a try? Take a look also at our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/StickneyCluster

At our Annual Parochial Church Meeting all officers were re-elected to their former roles. A copy of the accounts is on display in Church.

We have held our first Prize Bingo of 2016 for Stickney Church funds - it raised £292.50. A big thank you for your generosity and goodwill.

This year, more than ever before, we have a major challenge on our hands. The amount we are required to pay to the Diocese of Lincoln (Parish Share) has been recalculated and we are facing an increase of over £5000. This means that, as a group of churches, we have to raise over £24,000 just to pay Parish Share, Insurance and Utility bills. As a charity, we are totally dependent on the generosity of our community and our members. But we are working hard to raise the funds:

The Wedding Exhibition and Table-top sale in February raised £220. The Valentine’s Quiz raised £50 If you have seen Rev. Fran recently you will notice that her hair has turned

purple for Lent – that raised £405. On Thursday 21 April at 7.00pm we are holding a Beetle Drive in Stickney

Youth Hall – come and join us. On Sunday 1 May – Monday 2 May Rev. Fran is walking from Lincoln to

Instructions:1. Preheat oven to 160degrees C or gas mark 62. Sieve the flour into a bowl3. Add the butter/ margarine in small pieces4. Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs5. Stir in the sugar6. Break the egg into a bowl then add the milk7. Whisk the egg and the milk together8. Add the milk and egg to the bowl with the flour, butter and sugar9. Knead it to make a firm ball10. Cut into 12 equal pieces11. Roll into balls and squash each slightly onto greased baking sheet12. Make a dent in each and fill with jam13. Bake for 10 - 12 mins. Leave to cool. Enjoy

The legend of Saint George and the DragonSaint George is the patron saint of England – and we celebrate Saint George’s Day every year on 23 April. Although Saint George is associated with England, bravery and honour, the real Saint George wasn’t English at all! He was, in fact, born in Turkey in the 3rd Century, but not very much is known about him. The most famous legend of Saint George is of him slaying a dragon. However, this story only became popular in the 12th Century – long after Saint George had died. In the Middle Ages, it was common to use dragons in stories to represent the Devil. In the legend of Saint George and the Dragon, Saint George travelled to Libya. When he arrived there he found it had a large pond, almost as big as a lake, where a ferocious dragon lived. The dragon was terrorising the country and, every day, the people had been feeding the dragon a sheep to appease it. When the sheep had all gone, the dragon had demanded that the people sacrifice a young maiden to him each day. Saint George found that all the young girls had now been killed and only the King of Egypt’s daughter was left. Unless a knight could be found to slay the dragon, the princess would be sacrificed the next day. The King of Egypt had promised his daughter’s hand in marriage to the knight who could overcome the terrible dragon. Saint George was determined to save the princess, and the next day he rode out to the lake. When he arrived, he found the princess there, waiting to be fed to the dragon. Saint George sent her home to the palace and approached the dragon’s cave. When the dragon heard Saint George’s horse approaching, he came out of his cave and roared at him. The dragon was huge and its roar sounded like thunder, but Saint George was not afraid. He struck the monster with his spear, but the dragon’s scales were so hard that the spear simply broke into pieces. Saint George fell from his horse but did not give up. Instead, he rushed at the dragon and used his sword to slay it under its wing where there were no scales. The dragon fell dead at Saint George’s feet.Also on 23 April: William Shakespeare was the son of John Shakespeare, an alderman and a successful glover originally from Snitterfield, and Mary Arden, the daughter of an affluent landowning farmer. He was born in Stratford-upon-Avon and baptised there on 26 April 1564. His actual date of birth remains unknown, but is traditionally observed on 23 April, Saint George's Day. This date, which can be traced back to an 18th-century scholar's mistake, has proved appealing to biographers, since Shakespeare died 23 April 1616.

Friends of Stickney Surgery.Members of our group and visitors enjoyed the talk given by Mobile Footcare Practitioner, Mr. Peter Atkin. We found it to be very informative and gleaned some interesting facts on how to look after our feet and how to avoid some common problems. Peter answered various questions before tea and biscuits were served. Peter was thanked for his time.

We are open to suggestions as to what talks you may like, primarily on health care topics, so if there is anything we can arrange on your behalf our Chairperson is Audrey Braybrooks who can be contacted on 01205 480504. Any suggestions will then be discussed at our next meeting.

Our new quiz is available now at reception, £1 per copy, the theme being ‘Birds’, the closing date is 20th May so plenty of time to complete.

We are always looking for new members so if you would be interested in joining us our next meeting will be held at the surgery at 10.00am on Monday 9th May.

The Horbling Ladies:Would like to invite you to their first Luncheon at the Village Hall, this will be held on 5th April 2016. Doors open at 11.00am lunches serviced at 12 noon. Our first menu will be Steak Pie with Puff Pastry, Cream Potatoes, Peas, Carrots and Gravy or Jacket Potatoes with various Filling and Salad. Dessert will be Peach Trifle or Apple and Blackcurrant Pie and Cream. Tea and Coffee.

Tuesday 3rd May is the date for our second Luncheon and the times will be the same, doors open 11.00am with lunch served at 12 noon. The May menu will be Soup, Roast Beef, Yorkshire Puddings and all the trimmings, followed by homemade Lemon and Chocolate Cheesecake and Ice-cream, Tea and Coffee and Mints.

Due to the limited kitchen, and to keep the cost down, all lunches are to be prepaid at the previous luncheon, (payment for May will be received at the April luncheon). You will, however, be able to telephone 01205 480769 to book up to a week before the date and pay on the day for May only. This is a lively and friendly group which is looking for new members. No experience is required, bowls can be borrowed to try the game. We play on both Wednesday afternoons (from 13.00 to 16.00) and

Thursday evenings (from 18.30 to 21.00) in Stickney Village Hall.

The Horbling Ladies:

Gardening tips for April:Here I am in the early part of March thinking ahead to what we might be doing in the garden in April.  Looking out of the window the weather seems to be advising against being over-ambitious with snow showers being forecast.  There is a desire to get going but again 'caution' should be our byword.

Anyway, here are a few jobs to be getting on with (or not) as the weather allows.

1) One task which will surely pay dividends as the year goes on, is to dig a 5cm (or more) layer of compost or well rotted manure into the soil to prepare for the growing season.  A runner bean trench could also be prepared into which all your vegetable waste can be put and filled in, in a few weeks’ time.

2) Continue to plant chitted potatoes outside or in potato growing bags.  Watch for first signs of growth and be prepared to cover them with soil.

3) If you are fortunate enough to have asparagus, harvest the shoots when they are no more than 18 cm high.

4) Peas will need supporting as the weeks go on.  Place twiggy sticks around the pea plants so that the growing plants climb through them.

5) Sow small batches of early short variety of carrots as soon as the soil is warm enough to allow germination.  Some recommend sowing three seeds to a station every few inches and weeding out the weakest two of the three as they come through.

6) Finally some sowing tips:  a. delay sowing when the soil is still cold - when conditions are right,

plants started later will catch up and be strong.b. don't sow too deep - a good rule of thumb is to sow to a depth of 2-3

times the seeds' diameter.c. take care when shaking seeds from a packet - use your hand and

thumb, less chance of sowing too thickly.d. always follow seed packet instructions to the letter.e. test old batches of seeds before sowing to make sure they are still

viable.  I sowed four lots of lettuce seeds as a trial in a small tray - only one variety came up!

In conclusion, in the words of Winifred Mary Letts:

"That God once loved a garden we learn in Holy writ,And seeing gardens in the Spring, I well can credit it."

Stickney Outdoor Bowls ClubStickney Outdoor Bowls Club needs new members. There have been bowlers in the village since 1929, what a shame it would be if we have to close the club. There are more people living in the village now, children, from the age of 12 years, are very welcome to join and play for fun or as part of a team. Country & Western Evening with ‘Hazardville’ and

‘Jack of Diamonds’. Although this event was poorly attended it was really enjoyed by those who came along. The band, Hazardville, gave a fantastic performance as this was their first ‘gig’. The food, as usual, was great too! A loss was the result of this fund raiser, but hopefully this is just a blip for Stickney Show 2016!

Mobile Library Visits

The mobile library visits Stickney on MONDAY’S at the Youth Centre, Hall Lane between 10.15am and 11.15am and at Horbling Lane between 11.30am and 12.00noon. The next visits will be 18 April and 16 May.

Resident’s AssociationThe Stickney Residents Association are holding a fund raising craft fayre on the 16th April 2016 between 10.00am and 1.00pm. Refreshments, crafts, antiques and cosmetics are available.All funds raised will be funding the second term of computer classes and other community projects.

Help shape the future of your fire and rescue service Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue is inviting local residents to have their say on how its service is delivered.  As part of an 11-week public consultation, feedback is being sought on a number of proposed changes to the way in which the Service operates.  These are described more fully in the consultation document which can be found at:

NOTES FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON THURSDAY 03 MARCH

There was one member of the public present who came along to read a statement regarding the Community Committee. The Parish Council cannot have any member on the Management Committee of the halls due to the Parish Council being the Custodian Trustee.

Present: Cllrs Dodds, Littlewood, Lamy-Edwards, Spring and Bolland (Chairman) and Dist Cllr Ashton.

Reports From Representatives On Outside BodiesDist Cllr Ashton reported:ELDC have set a budget with the aim to save £6m over the next 4 years. The aim of the finance team is to become financially stable without the aid of Central Government.LCC have, whilst setting the budget, saved the gritting service, rural bus services and Sure Start Children’s Services. Waterloo housing are struggling to let warden controlled housing in Sibsey and are considering letting properties off to younger people. Concerns have been raised and Mayflower Housing will be asked how they manage their properties. West Fen will be holding a Parish Meeting on 15 March 2016 at 7.30pm in Carrington Village Hall. It may be helpful if a Stickney Parish Councillor, or two, attended the meeting. Stickney are in-line with Sibsey with the cost of Council Tax being approximately £37.00 for a Band A property.

County Cllr Ayling arrived and reported:All services at LCC have been cut as much as possible and Council Tax will increase by 3.9%. The budget is prepared for one year only. ELDC will be turning off some of the street lights, there is no ELDC footway lighting in Stickney. LCC will be turning out all their street lights in Stickney through the night. LCC cannot just abandon the Picnic Area. The situation regarding a crossing in Stickney will be looked at again in six months. West Fen Lane will be re-surfaced in the new financial year.

To Receive Declarations Of Interest In Accordance With The Localism Act 2011The grass cutting of the Cemetery and Public Footpaths was discussed due to the contractor being unable to fulfil the contract.Cllr Dodds declared an interest and signed the book accordingly.

Report from the ChairmanThe contractor for the grass cutting at the cemetery advised the Clerk at the weekend that he was unable to carry out the work. Following discussion it was resolved to ask Malc Firth Landscapes to do the work for 2016. Information regarding interference of the Freeview reception, caused by the installation of 4G, has been sent to the Chairman, more information is in this Parish magazine. Copies of the paperwork held by the Parish Council with regard to the Village Hall and Youth Centre have been requested by, and handed to, the Chairman of the Community Committee. (The Chairman of the Community Committee will be asked for a copy of the document he referred to in the Public forum and the notes he read out.)

Lincoln & Lindsey Blind Society – Request For DonationA donation of £50.00 was approved towards the purchase of boom boxes for the hard of hearing, this helps with audio books etc.

Planning Applications Received The following plans were looked at and OBJECTIONS were made:S/169/00323/16 – Moschatel Ltd - Change of use of existing buildings (5 units) used for

horticulture to use for light industrial and storage purposes (2 units already in operation) at Braybrooks Yard, Main Road.The access is on a dangerous corner. What is the light industry? What is being stored? There is no indication of the size of vehicles accessing the property.

Planning DecisionsREFUSAL of outline planning permission has been received for:S/169/02388/15 - Mr G Whittaker - Outline erection of a block of 6 dwellings at Land west of The Beeches, Main Road.

An Appeal for S/169/02469/14 for an outline application for residential development of land to the rear of Sanlyn, Main Road (100 properties) has been dismissed.

Play AreaDrainage work has been carried out at the play area. The repairs to the ‘witches hat’ has been ordered.

RepairsThe dip in Stickney Lane is getting worse. LCC have reported surface dressing to take place at West Fen Lane, West Fen and at Northlands.ANY POT HOLES OR STREET LIGHTS IN ALL DAY OR OUT AT NIGHT CAN BE REPORTED TO THE PARISH COUNCIL CLERK. Alternatively it can be done direct via the LCC website where repairs are shown on a map so may have already been reported. It is tedious to register but if you let the site remember your details it is easy (use a very obscure password as you will not need to remember it!) after that you can report any highway issue direct.

The next Parish Council Meeting will be held on Thursday 07 April 2016 in the Youth Centre at 7.30pm. There will be a public forum from 7.15pm.
