It is vitally important that diagnosis is conducted using the approved tools and equipment. Failure to

use the correct adaptors for electrical testing will damage components on the vehicle, falsify results

and may result in personal injury. Always observe the relevant safety regulations.

Content

This document is designed to complement the information displayed in Guided Fault Finding and

help you to establish which adaptor loom to utilise when diagnosing Airbag systems.

The content of the document

Typically when working with airbag systems a Guided Fault Finding test plan will ask you to select

“an appropriate adaptor”. Unless you have the full range of adaptors (not currently mandatory), you

may not have the correct adaptor loom on site and almost certainly have difficulties identifying

which adaptor loom to order. This guide offers illustrations of the available adaptors, allowing you to

compare the configuration of the adaptor with the multi‐plug/s on the vehicle and order the correct

adaptor loom for the task.

Please note, If an airbag adapter is not visible in this document and you require the correct part number to proceed with diagnosis, please contact the Technical Team. Tools and Equipment have no reference to the airbag adapter type and the repair operation. An escalation via DISS is the most appropriate action to obtain this data.

The adapter lead and the auxiliary airbag tester VAS 5056 serve as a means of testing the curtain airbags in the Golf/Bora, Sharan front passenger's airbag and driver's airbag in vehicles with ESP. The adapter lead is included in the items supplied with the auxiliary airbag tester VAS 5056 B since 7/2000. The auxiliary airbag tester VAS 5056 or VAS 5056A should be supplemented with the adapter lead VAS 5056/3.

To avoid unintentional release of the side airbags during work on and around the driver, front passenger and rear seats, the ignition lead of the respective side airbag module must be earthed to its housing for reasons of safety. This is done on the Audi A8 with airbag adapter VAS 5068. (Airbag adapter VAS 5094 is required for all other vehicles) Warning An adapter is required for each side airbag! Use of the airbag adapter is described in the relevant workshop manual.

In order to prevent unintentional release of the side airbag during removal and assembly work on the driver and front passenger seats, the ignition leads of the respective side airbag modules must be short circuited to the housing for reasons of safety. Application: Volkswagen and Audi vehicles (Sharan from model year 1999). For all other vehicles, airbag adapters VAS 5094 and 5068 are required. Warning!! One adapter per side airbag (2)! VAS 5232/1 Airbag Adaptor.

To prevent unintended release of the side airbag during assembly and removal work on the driver and front passenger side, the ignition lead of the relevant side airbag module must be short circuited to its housing. This is done for reasons of safety. Application: The transition from model year 1998 to 1999 saw an introduction of new/different connectors in several 100 vehicles for the side airbag of the Passat B5. For these vehicles airbag adapter VAS 5232/1 is required. For all other side airbag systems, airbag adapters VAS 5232 VAS 5094 and VAS 5068 should be used. Warning!! One adapter per side airbag (2) is required! The application is described in the relevant workshop manual.
