Dog TracksOFFENSEMurray Setting The Tone For SEC Quarterbacks

QB Aaron Murray returns for his junior year and looks to be one of the nation’s elite at his po-sition. During the offseason, Murray graduated with a degree in Psychology after posting a GPA of 3.4 and is now in graduate school. The Tampa, Fla., native finished 2011 with a school record 35 touchdown passes. He also set the school record for touchdown responsibility by a QB in a season with 37 (35 passing, 2 rushing) last year. In just two quarters of play versus New Mexico State in 2011, Murray tied a school record with

five touchdown passes. His five scores all went to different receivers. Murray finished the season second in the SEC in total offense at 232.9 y/g while the Bulldogs were third in the same category at 408.5. In his 16 wins as a starter, Murray has 39 TDs to just nine INTs. Murray is the SEC’s leading active player in total offensive yards (6,476), completions (447), TD responsibility (65), TD passes (59) and passing yards (6,198).

No. 2 Signal Caller For The Bulldogs Hutson Mason played in four games at quarterback in 2011, going 18-of-30 for 254 yards and two touchdowns, and has appeared in eight games over the last two seasons. In 2012, Georgia aims to redshirt Mason to give him a year separation between him and junior Aaron Murray. Mason is currently No. 2 on the depth chart. Redshirt freshman Christian LeMay, a 2009 SuperPrep All-American, will be battling redshirt sophomore Parker Welch and true freshman Faton Bauta for playing time. Welch played in two games last season and completed his only pass for 20 yards versus Coastal Carolinad. Bauta enrolled at UGA in January. Plugging The Holes On The Offensive Line Projected starters for 2012 are juniors LT Kenarious Gates, RG Chris Burnette and LG Dallas Lee, who all split time at guard last year and have 31 starts between them, along with sophomore David Andrews and true freshman John Theus. Andrews is slotted as the starter at center while Theus, younger brother of Bulldog snapper Nathan Theus, is expected to line up at RT. Gates and Theus would be making their first career starts at the tackle positions. Theus would become the first true freshman starter at tackle since Trinton Sturdivant in 2007. Sturdivant started all 13 games at tackle that season. Early enrollee Mark Beard, who was a NJCAA All-American at Cof-feyville CC last year, will give Georgia depth at guard and tackle. The next two expected to line up for UGA are sophomore Watts Dantzler and junior Austin Long. Georgia lost seniors C Ben Jones (Houston), LT Cordy Glenn (Buffalo) and RT Justin Anderson (Indianapolis) to the NFL after the trio enabled the Bulldogs to set school records for total plays and touchdown passes in 2011, as well as roll up an average of 408.5 total yards and 32.0 points per game. Glenn finished with 50 starts, including the team’s last 47 games, and tied the school record for the most starts for a Bulldog lineman (Clint Boling, 2007-10). Jones started 49 games in his career. Who To Cover? The Bulldogs attacked the op-position in 2011 with a wide variety of weapons at receiver. Six players recorded more than 230 yards receiving, with three of those having at least 45 catches, and all but one return this season. In fact, QB Aaron Murray threw touchdowns to 10 different Bulldogs last year. Senior Tavarres King led the crew with 705 yards on 47 catches and eight touchdowns, including a school record 205 yards and a score on six receptions in the Outback Bowl. King, who has already graduated in Social Studies Education, is the SEC’s active leader in both receptions (94) and receiving yards (1,652). Close behind King in last year’s standings was freshman Malcolm Mitchell who snagged 45 catches for 665 yards and four touchdowns in just 11 games played. Mitchell will also play CB this fall. A pair of sophomores - Michael Bennett, who was second on the team with five TDs, and Chris Conley - give Murray another pair of targets. Ben-nett was fourth on the team with 320 receiving yards while Conley had 288 yards and two touchdowns in 11 contests. King is joined in the senior ranks by Marlon Brown who made five starts and was also was part of the 200-yard club, including a 121-yard, two touchdown performance at Vanderbilt. Brown put up the best numbers in preseason camp. In addition, junior Rantavious Wooten also produced a solid preseason camp after sitting out the last 11 games of 2011 for a medical redshirt. Wooten did have two catches for 39 yards and a touchdown before being sidelined. Georgia’s offense utilizes the tight end for more than just a blocking role. Junior Arthur Lynch has appeared in 25 games in his career, starting two, and has two career receptions for 17 yards. Lynch played behind All-American Orson Charles his first couple seasons. Charles declared for the NFL early and now suits up for the Cincinnati Bengals.

Getting Defensive l Georgia ranked fifth nationally in Total Defense (277.2 ypg), 11th in Rushing Defense (101.2 ypg) and 23rd in Scoring Defense (20.6 ppg) last season. l Nine of 11 starters from that 2011 team return, including 12 of the 14 leading tacklers. l The returning defenders teamed with several key backups to account for 33.5 of the Bulldogs’ 35 sacks (2.50/g, which was second in the league) and 17 of their SEC-leading 20 interceptions. l During the Bulldogs’ 10-game winning streak, Georgia surrendered 133 points (13.3/g); allowed just 12 touchdowns; and UGA’s opponents reached the Red Zone only 16 times and that resulted in 73 points. l The Bulldog defense allowed 27 touchdowns in 2011. SEC Sack Leader Jarvis Jones Returns For More Junior OLB and 2011 Butkus Award finalist Jarvis Jones gives the Bulldogs a solid foundation at linebacker. A consensus All-American, he led the SEC and was tied for fifth nationally with 13.5 sacks (which was just a half sack off David Pollack’s school record 14 set in 2002) last year. The Columbus native was also No. 1 in the league with 19.5 tackles for loss. Thanks in part to his persistence in the opponent’s backfield, the Bulldog defense was second in the SEC with 35 sacks in 2011 and 33 of those sacks came in SEC action.

Stellar Linebacker Corps Extends Past Jones While Jarvis Jones stacked up the acco-lades and broke into the headlines the most in 2011, the Bulldogs also return the other three starters at linebacker and a handful of veteran reserves. Senior ILB Michael Gilliard assumed a starting role for the first time last year and fin-ished third on the team with 65 tackles, including seven for loss. His versatile inside partner is junior Alec Ogletree, who, despite missing six games with a foot injury, piled up 52 stops (7.5 tackles for loss) and forced a team-high three fumbles. Ogletree led the Bulldogs during their last five games in tackles and finished with a career-high 13 tackles to go along with a tipped pass that teammate John Jenkins hauled in for an interception in the Outback Bowl versus #12 Michigan State. Sophomore Ramik Wilson is slotted to be the other starter at OLB, which would mark his first career start. Wilson played in eight games for the Bulldogs last year. Senior Christian Robinson will share the load at ILB. Robinson, who also suffered a foot injury causing him to miss two games last year, will be expected to direct traffic on defense after recording 47 stops in 2011. The depth continues at linebacker with the return of sophomore ILB Amarlo Herrera, who started eight games last year. Early in the 2011 season, Herrera helped fill in when Ogletree and Robinson were sidelined. Herrera finished with 37 tackles and made eight starts. Also adding depth to the linebacker corps are a pair of returners and a trio of true freshmen. Junior T.J. Stripling is also expected to contribute. Newcomers Jordan Jenkins, Josh Dawson and James DeLoach all made significant strides during the summer and preseason camp to earn playing time in 2012.

DEFENSE & SPECIAL TEAMSStingy Secondary Mostly Intact The Bulldogs are hoping to lean on a secondary unit that only lost one starter from last year. Despite CB/return specialist Brandon Boykin taking his 55 tackles (11 for loss) and three interceptions from 2011 to the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles, Georgia returns senior CB Sanders Commings and senior safeties Bacarri Rambo and Shawn Williams to its arsenal. Rambo was the most dangerous threat to opposing quarterbacks last season after managing an SEC-leading eight interceptions to complement 55 tackles. The AP First Team All-American also shot to third in the school record books by returning those eight picks 157 yards, including a return for a touchdown versus #24 Auburn. Williams led the Bulldogs with 72 tackles and was second on the team with four interceptions last year. Commings, who will miss the first two games, joined Rambo and Williams in deciding to stay with the Bulldogs for another season. Starting 11 games at CB and three at one of the safety spots, Commings also finished with 55 tackles, including 46 solos, to go with an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Senior Branden Smith, who like Boykin serves as a CB and a return specialist, will be a candidate to fill Boykin’s vacancy on defense after notch-ing 24 stops and a pair of picks. Sophomore Damian Swann also played in 11 games in 2011 and is gearing up for a breakout campaign in 2012. Adding to the depth in the secondary is sophomore Malcolm Mitchell. Mitchell was second on Georgia’s offense with 45 catches for 665 yards and four scores last season, but will be suiting up on both sides of the ball in 2012. He was tabbed Rivals.com’s top cornerback prospect nationally coming out of Valdosta HS. Fellow sophomore Corey Moore played primarily on special teams last season and is now ready to assume his role on defense. In addition, redshirt sophomore Connor Norman is slated to back up Rambo at the free safety spot. Middle Losing Little The Bulldog defensive front lost only one member (DeAngelo Tyson, who was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens) from 2011. Georgia is counting on more solid production from its two nose tackles in senior John Jenkins and junior Kwame Geathers. Jenkins started seven games in his first season with UGA and finished with 28 tackles, including six for loss, and an interception in last season’s Outback Bowl. Geathers added 14 stops in 12 games. At end, Abry Jones put the NFL on hold to stick around for his senior season after gathering 48 tackles, including four sacks, while starting all 14 games. Jones will be working with junior Garrison Smith, who earned SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week honors after the victory over #21 Georgia Tech in 2011. Smith started the last two games of the season after Tyson went down with an ankle injury versus the Yellow Jackets. After lining up as OLBs last season, senior Cornelius Washington and sophomore Ray Drew are expected to be on the line in 2012. Washington ex-ploded for five sacks and 17 tackles to go along with 29 quarterback pressures for the Bulldogs last season. Washington is projected to see action at OLB and DE this year. Drew, who threw the discus for Georgia’s track and field team in the spring, played in seven games and was named the SEC Freshman of the Week after having three tackles, including 2.5 tackles for a loss, and a fumble recovery in the win at Vanderbilt.

Searching For Specialists Georgia signed a punter in Collin Barber of Cartersville and a place kicker in Marshall Morgan of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., to take the place of two of the best who have ever played the position for the Bulldogs. All-American punter Drew Butler was named the 2009 Ray Guy Award winner for being the nation’s top punter and finished as the school’s all-time leader and second in SEC history with a 45.4 average. Place kicker Blair Walsh finished his career as the SEC’s all-time leading scorer with 412 points, which ranks fifth all-time in NCAA history. He drilled 10 field goals of 50 or more yards and is slated to start for the Minnesota Vikings. Butler is expected to contend for the starting spot for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Bulldogs also lost a one-of-a-kind return specialist. Brandon Boykin completed his time as a Bulldog as the only player in SEC history with three plays of 100 yards of any kind and the Outback Bowl MVP ended up second on the all-time conference list with 2,663 kickoff return yards on 113 returns (24.2 avg). Branden Smith is the only returner with experience. Malcolm Mitchell will also be called upon in the return game.

Quick Strike Again & AgainUGA led the SEC with 35 scoring drives under 2:00 in 2011. Against New Mexico State, Georgia had seven touchdown drives under 2:00, including four under 40 seconds.

99-Yard Touchdown Drive Vs. OMGeorgia scored on a 99-yard, eight-play drive that took 4:00 to give the Bulldogs a 17-0 lead over Ole Miss in the second quarter. TE Orson Charles hauled in a two-yard score from redshirt sophomore QB Aaron Murray to give UGA the longest drive in the SEC in 2011. This was the longest scoring drive for Georgia since the Bulldogs had a 99-yard touchdown drive versus Central Michigan in 2008.

Scoring Surge The Bulldogs took a 49-3 halftime lead versus New Mexico State. Georgia’s 49 points tied for the most in one half dating back to 1950. The Bulldogs also scored 49 versus Northeast Louisiana in 1994. Georgia scored 42 points in the second quarter alone. Available records dating back to 1958 show that the Bulldogs have never reached 42 points in a quarter. The most was 35 versus Idaho State in 2010 and William & Mary in 1988. Georgia’s 42 points came on six drives in the second quarter that covered 7:57. It is believed to be the most points scored by a team in a brief period since Fresno State scored 49 in 6:25 against Utah State in 2001.

Points And Total Offense Georgia’s 63 points versus New Mexico State was the most under Mark Richt, and the most since 1994 when it beat Northeast Louisiana 70-6. The Bulldogs tallied 627 yards of total offense, the most under Richt, and the most since a school record of 667 against Southern Miss in 1993. Georgia had nine different Bulldogs score a TD in the victory over NMS. This marks the most Georgia players to find the end zone in a game since 1958.

Senior Branden Smith highlighted the 2011 New Mexico State game with a 56-yard touchdown run. This was one of eight plays for the Bulldogs that measured 25 yards or longer in this game.
