Stress-is it a deadly part of thegame we call deadlines, competi-tion, electronics, the nagging fear ofwar, sickness and old age?

lnsomnia. Pounding heart andgrinding teeth. lrritability, backacheand fatigue. Nightmares, nervouslaughter, stuttering and overeating

-all reminders that stress is realand our bodies will not let us deny it.

Expect Streoo- lt'o NormalThe idea that Christians can be on

top every moment is unscriptural.But the idea that we don't have to beoverwhelmed by pressure is veryscriotural.

Life comes to everyone in roughand tumble fashion-a kaleidiscopeof pressure and pain, of joy and ex-hiliration, of grief and depression.We jostle with the crowd and dis-cover that making necessary ac-commodations to stress whichpushes at us from all directions isone of life's biggest challenges.

As Christians, we are subject to itall-to accidents and physicaldiseases, to psychological dis-orders, to pressing job and familyproblems-just like others. Prob-lems are part and parcel of beinghuman.

God does not abrogate His natur-al law just to help us avoid the con-sequences of our mistakes, our un-wise choices and the corporate sinsof the race.

It is true that we live in the age oftension, fast running and crisis. Butman has always been a creature

Stress is the pain of being alive, ofalways having to face new circum-stances, the ache of trying againwhen we've already failed manytimes.

It arises from the threatening ad-justment to change, the struggle tostretch inflated dollars over thenecessities, the uneasiness of a re-lationship gone sour, the apprehen-

under oressure of one kind or an-other. This tells me that we were de-signed to cope with stress. Wereach our highest goals under pres-sure.

I am convinced that we love thehectic quality of our lives and thatanything less feverish than an lrmaBombeck household seems hope-lessly dull. Given an hour of peaceand tranquility, we become restlessand uneasy.

Even in lndia's pastoral villageswhere my husband and I used to goon camping missions, scarcely aday passed without someone sti rringa roaring quarrel or fight to liventhings up a bit.

The problem is not one of doingaway with stress or of removing our-selves from the hustle and bustle,but of learning to tolerate stresswithout getting ulcers or having amental breakdown.

sider life's major distresses: loss ofa mate by death or divorce, the crip-pling illness of a child, the weight ofphysical impairment, the alienationof mental illness, unemployment orthe sudden loss of a lifetime's ma-terial accumulation.

I have not been falsely accused,unjustly taken to court, nor impri-soned. I have, however, shared allofthese vicariously with friends.

I have experienced war and po-verty, hunger, fatigue and epidemic,job frustration and loss of friends,unrealized ambition, along with ag-ing, tests of faith, fear and shock.

The shining truth I learned is thatit is not the outward event or circum-stance that is devastating, but theinner negative response-how I feelabout what happens to me. What I

tell myself about what happens iswhat causes the stress.

For instance, during our 25 yearsas missionaries we were alwayspoor. But we perceived our lives asrich so our poverty was never asource of stress to us. To haveborne the same material deprivationamong affluent American peersmight have seemed intolerable be-cause we would have felt ooor.

Attitude makes stress either de-structive or creative. When stress is

bad we call it distress. When it en-hances our feeling of dealing suc-cessfully with life and makes us feelhappy, we label it eusfress.

Observe two women, both ofwhom have lost loving husbands bydeath.

One retreats from life, resentfuland bitter, and grows more gnarledand defeated with each passingyear.

The other accepts the loss askingnot "Why me?" but rather "Why notme?" She goes on to embrace lifewith its ups and downs, growingricher and more fulfilled with time.

Handle Stress BlbltcallyEmotional energy, like physical

energy, is limited and we can ex-haust it f ighting circumstanceswhen a genuine acceptance (notjust resignation or a stiff upper lip)could break the tension and removethe strain imposed by whatever thesituation is.

This is not to say that we shouldavoid reducing stress by changingcircumstances where change ispossible and practical. Rather,recognize those situations we can-not change and accept them withtolerance and thanksgiving. God willgive us grace to use every event forblessing to ourselves or others.

While the Bible never promises usconflict-free lives, it does give us away of looking at things which, ifpracticed, makes all the difference.

Paul put it this way, "We arepressed on every side by trouble,but not crushed or broken. We areperplexed because we don't knowwhy things happen as they do, butwe don't give up and quit. We arehunted down but God never aban-dons us. We get knocked down butwe get up again and keep going" (llCorinthians 4:8,9 TLB).

The reason Paul got up again andkept going was his inner trust thatGod would carry his burdens, caresand anxieties, He really believedthat ALL things work together forgood to them that love God and whoare the called according to Hispurpose.

Paul understood that it was for hisgood and God's purpose, and Paul

Five Ways To PrepareFor Stress

The Bible speaks to every life situ-ation in principle, but we often allowourselves to be guided by pressurerather than principle.

REST FEGU LARLYOne principle that helps us cope

with stress and the pull of gravity isthe law of the three rests.

The annual rest-nature rests lnwinter. lt follows that we need an an-nual vacation.

The weekly rest-the seventh daywas given for our RESToration. Weignore this provision at our peril.

The nocturnal rest-with artificiallighting and in-house entertainmentwe abuse the use of darkness.When we don't get enough sleep webecome negative, irritable, hostile,depressed and apathetic. Percep-tion is dulled and judgment andmemory are impaired.

FXEFCISE OFTENThe corollory to rest is exercise.

"Six days shalt thou labor"-that'sexercise. Unfortunately the laborthat most of us do no longer gives usthat bodily workout.

It's in keeping with biblical prin-ciple to make provision for the phys-ical exercise our bodies need to oftset inactivity during working hours.

EAT SENS/8LYThe Old Testament had a great

deal to say about diet. While muchof it refers to a oarticular time andclime, the principle remains thatproper diet is important to thebody's ability to withstand stress.

As Christians we are expected toincorporate into our life styles thebest dietary practices that modernmedicine has devised. Balancedmeals taken regularly and withmoderation restore the wear andtear that noise, static, heat and cold

wreak on our bodies every day.

QUIT FIGHTING CHANGEOur primary orientation should be

for today. We waste emotional en-ergy regretting yesterday or worry-ing over tomorrow. "Sufficient untothe day is the stress thereof," maynot be the exact words but the con-ceot is biblical.

Resistance to inevitable changeconsumes a large portion of ourlimited emotional fuel. While changehas always been a fact of life, itseems to have gone wild in our time.

lf we can develop a happy tol-erance for change and an eager an-ticipation for the liberation thatchange can bring, we will save our-selves and others immeasurable an-guish.

MAKE TIME FOR GODAnd finally, "Be still and know

that I am God." To cope with pres-sure and display Christian testimo-nies, we must set aside time to bewith God.

ln the calmness of His oresencewe learn direction, receive strengthto accept our limitations and thegrace to live within them. While wewait with God. we can claim thecourage to forgive others for whatthey are as well as for what they do,and to understand that we serve our-selves by forgiving.

We need time with God to makeour confession and acceot His for-giveness. Peace is not somethingexternally caused but something in-wardly created by knowing that inJesus our sins are forgiven and weare reconciled with God.

When we are quiet with God wecan actually feel ourselves "beingstrengthened with all might, accord-ing to his glorious power, unto allpatience and longsuffering with joy-f ulness. "

I never heard of a joyful andthankful person breaking downunder stress.

"ln everything give thanks . . .

Again I say rejoice."Attitude makes all the difference. t

A fellow called long distance afew weeks ago to complain abouthis pastor and other unpleasantriesin his localchurch.

The conversation bouncedamong familiar thorns-teacherqualifications, what about deacons,the pastor's suspect preaching-until I quietly asked, "Do you t¡the?"

Come to find out the man's prob-lem wasn't teachers, deacons orpreachers. lt was tithing. He didn't.

Funny thing. No tither ever has aharsh word criticizing the practice,yet non-tithers can't bring them-selves to say a kind word for eithertithing or t¡thers.

Non-tithers huff and blusteraround tithers for the same reasonthat speeders watch the rear-viewmirror when they pass a highwaypatrolman. What they're doing is il-legal, and here comes somebodywho's got the evidence to prove it.

But for all non-tithers grousingacross the denomination, thiscolumn is dedicated to you. Here's

an annotated list of all the excusesI've ever heard for "Why I don'ttithe."

PREFER MY OWN PLAN

First, I don't tithe because rum-mage sales work better to financethe local church. Rummage salesadd dignity to church financing, andwe have such fun dumping all thatstuff we don't want.

Secondly, I reject tithing becauseI prefer the excitement of church-sponsored pie suppers and bakesales to sustain the annual budget.Tithing is such a blah arrangement.lf you could just once see the enthu-siasm we generate by pledges,pressure and call-a-thon deadlines,you'd never go back to tithing.

Not tithing gives me a burden topromote bike-a, rock-a, walk-a-thons. This way I not only givemoney, but get exercise and drawattention to myself and the sacrificel'm making while I do it.

When I scrapped tithing, it mademe eager to work harder and drumup business for church car washesand garage sales and paper drives.Why, you can't imagine the joy I

receive soliciting funds for ourchurch door to door in the commu-nity.

This sure beats the inconvenienceof "laying by in store on the first day

of the week" as the Apostle Pauland our pastor suggest.

DON'T BELIEVE IT D()CTRINALLY

But to push the issue, I base non-tithing-book, chapter and verse-on the fact that it is unscr¡ptural totithe.

I think it shows spiritual immatur-ity when a fellow publicly admitsthat he tithes. I prefer being moremodest. I never "let my left handknow what my right hand doeth"(Matthew 6:3). I admit it presentsproblems each April 15 when I paymy taxes this way. Those IRS guysget so belligerent.

Only a legalist would tithe. ltreally vexes me when lhosepompous tithers march in everySunday and plunk their tithíng en-velopes in the offering plate-theymust think God still lives on MountSinai.

Everybody knows tithing origi-nated under the Law. Even if Abra-ham and Jacob did pay tithes beforethe Law, they gave it directly to Godand didn't have to channel it throughsome business committee (SeeGenesis 1 4 :20-23; 28:20-22\.

Frankly, l'd rather face God un-tithed and be called a thief (SeeMalachi 3:B-10) than bow to tithing. I

feel so strongly about this that I'mwilling for the world to think I don't

believe Jesus rose from the dead,rather than tithe (See Hebrews 7:B).

Jesus only mentioned tithingonce, and then He prefaced His re-marks with "Woe unto you hypo-crites" and talked about "we¡ghtiermatters" (see Matthew 23:23).That'swhy I encourage all my f riendsnot to tithe.

TITHING W()N'T WORK

You can't convince me that 90percent goes further than 100 per-cent in these days of inflation. Allthis chatter about being beilerstewards of what's left after a fellowtithes is just preacher talk.

I'llsend my money to appreciativeW pastors. They'll thank me for itand won't harp on tithing every timeI see them.

Makes me no difference if theFree Will Baptist Treatise does touttithing as scriptural. That's just abook written by men anyway.

Besides, I live by our ChurchCovenant which says all members"pay according to our ability for thesupport of the church."

God has not prospered me so I

can afford to tithe. Can I help it ifeverybody under Law prosperedenough to tithe; it's not that wayunder grace in the 20th century.

It would do me no good to t¡the,because the "Lord loves a cheerfulgiver" (ll Corinthians 9:7), I doubtthat He would accept money f rom agrouch like me.

Non{ithers understand God'sprogram of support for the Churchfar better than tithers. The real pil-lars who undergird missions pro-grams and build Christian collegesare us non-tithers.

I don't tithe to the local churchwhere I belong because I refuse tosupport a full-time pastor-my heartbeats for world causes.

I discard tithing since I don't wantmy money spent paying light bills,buying literature, unsinking the sink-ing fund or bankrolling some denom-inational bureaucrat while little chil-dren on every conlinent are hungry.

I believe in the localchurch meet-ing emergencies as they arise. I'llrally to a good crisis any day. Butwhen it comes to tithing in a localchurch, all I have to say is-

Most oreachers could use somelessons (if lessons could be taught)on how to be courteous and Polite in

their personal dealings. However,these actions and attitudes must bedeveloped and cultivated by an indi-vidual as he faces' situations in lifewhich demand them.

his is not to suggest that theminister be a Sir Lancelot or

knight in shining armor. He is not or-dained to knighthood. That suP-posedly died with the feudal system.But let's face it, the chivalry qualifi-cations required of medieval knightswould brighten some dark sPotsfound in the character of certain in-dividuals who live in parsonages a-round the country.

ln a rough and tumble world filledwith violence and tough attitudes,

the Lord's servant will not often findit easy to comply with all his callingdemands regarding being courteousand polite. He will, however, find itrewarding when he strives to do so.

The burly, hard-nosed footballplayer on the field is expected to beobnoxious and mean in his attitudetoward opponents. He ProbablYwould not get good press releases ifhe tackled with "Please" and"thank you." When temPers flareand the battle rages, the grand-stands resound with loud cheers ofexcitement.

The minister is not PlaYing to thegrandstands of a sPorts arena. Hismission is not the same as the sportshero. His calling requires a fardeeper and more sensitive attitudetoward those with whom he is as-sociated both inside and outside ofhis congregation.

He must "be like a duck-calmand unruffled on the surface, butpaddle as hard as you can under-neath. "

You can certainly learn a lotaboutthe character and attitude of somecustomers (and clerks as well) justby listening to the exchange. Yousoon discover that some dear soulshave forgotten what good manners,politeness, respect for another'sfeelings and just plain commoncourtesy are all about.

Now if that frustrated customeryou were watching haPPened lo bea minister-perhaps the pastor of alocal congregation with whom Youwere acquainted-you might evenbe more impressed by the exchangeand the behavior displayed as thatpesky error was discussed.

'T n" pulpit is a notable place fort any minister to start to work to

make needed improvements in culti-vating a new crop of good mannersproduced by the seeds of courtesy.

Can the congregation describethe preacher as "polished?" Dothey say he speaks with a "softtongue" and with "sweet words" or"honeyed phrases?"

Whatever their description of thepreacher's pulpit manner, there canbe no substitute for a sweet, humblespirit in the man of God as he standsbefore his people from week toweek declaring the message of theLord or moderating a business con-ference or making announcements.

To be rude and discourteous inthe sacred stand is inexcusable. Apreacher only adds insult to injurywhen he publicly attacks anyonefrom his pulpit. When this happens,he has an uphill climb to get back inthe good graces of nearly everyonewho heard him.

It is always best to be gentle andkind even to those who need to beadmonished or chided. The pulpit isnever the place for temper tantrumsor for vicious, caustic words againsteven the worst enemy.

Once when I had put some strongemphasis on a point as I waspreaching w¡th even more volumethan usual, I paused for a second toget a silent effect when a young ladsitting in his mother's lap spoke outduring the silence.

in the process. lt is always wisdomto keep a sweet, loving spirit evenwhen the situation calls for strongdisciplinary action whether on acongregat¡on or one of the childrenat home.

lJ o* many wives and PK'sI I (Preacher's Kids) could givetheir preacher husbands and fathersa passing grade on a home courtesytest?

Most wives appreciate a call in-forming them when it is necessaryto be late for a meal or some imoor-tant engagement. Any child canunderstand a brief explanation forbeing denied a request rather thanbeing given the brush-off.

Just a kind word spoken in a softtone makes a great impression.Consider advice of Solomon inProverbs 15:1, "A soft answer turn-eth away wrath, but grievous (hurt-ful)words stirreth up anger."

My wife and I have treasured thebeauty of that verse over three dec-ades of marriage. Verse five also re-lates a real truth in this regard, "Awholesome tongue is a tree of life:but perverseness therein is a breachin the soirit."

The people in a community whoown and operate businesses can tellyou more about some people whocome through their doors than youwould want to hear. These peopleknow who says "please", "thankyou", "l appreciate that" or "l begyour pardon."

The oostal clerks or the mailcarrier who delivers mail to the

|.l n" other matter reveals the\-/ crops of good or bad mannersthat pastors are growing. This is thedesk in his office or study.

Much can be said about unre-turned telephone calls, some ofthem which came in three or fourdays back. There is the correspond-ence which needed to be answeredlast week, or how about that note ofthanks which should have beenmailed over a month ago.

Failures of this nature which oileup on a desk are just as bad as pass-ing a friend on the street or in theaisle of the church. and instead ofsaying "hello", turn away and givehim a cold shoulder without saying aworo.

Like weeds in a garden of vege-tables, these bad habits which showcrudeness and disrespect need tobe pulled up by the roots and de-stroyed before they take over thegarden.

Has anyone ever seen a question-naire for ministers which reouired apositive answer to "Are you court-eous and polite?" Maybe every can-didate for the ministry should haveto answer that ouestion before he isordained.

The Bible is plain in the instructionfound there. Paul wrote in Titus 3:2that a Christian was "to speak evil ofno man, to be no brawlers, butgentle, showing all meekness untoall men." He also wrote in I Timothy3 that the bishop was to be "of goodbehavior. . . patient, not a brawler."

These requirements of a bishopare just as important as any otherwhich Paul menlions in that chapter.Keep this in mind as you start eachday. Why not take a tip from lheseinstructions and begin to cultivatethe seeds of courtesy and polite-ness which will produce an abun-dant crop of good manners andgoodbehavior. ¡

He said, "Mama, that man isgetting mad." I realized that nearlyeveryone had heard him, so I said tohim before continuing my message,"No, son, I'm not mad, but some-times you can feel like it when youare fighting sin."

The truth is that the child sensedwhat a congregation always senseswhen the preacher comes downhard and gets too brutal and vicious

church or parsonage could give afair appraisal of the value of a min-ister to a community without being amember of his congregation. That isalso true of the grocery clerk at thecheckout stand in the store wherehe trades.

One word spoken in the rightplace with a smile in the voice canbe a great treasure and a revelationof the personality.

n extreme patriarchal systemthat disenfranchised women

, f prevailed in most cultures un-til the 20th century. The father'sword and authority were absolute,and women were often treated aschattels. That whole system is dis-appearing in most industrialized na-tions, and the proper worth of thewoman is being increasingly ac-knowledged.

Reaction, however, has set in,and as is often the case the pendu-lum has swung to extremes in thewomen's liberation movement. Themilitant feminists now are insistingthat five major institutions-love,marriage, family, heterosexual sexand religion-must be destroyed tofree women from oppression.

The absence and loss of visibilityof male authority in the home arefast turning America into a matriar-chal society. We are only now begin-ning to feel its impact. We needunderstanding and balance in thefather-mother roles in the home ifwe are to produce well-adjustedchildren.

The roles ascribed to fathers andmothers in scripture do not implysuperiority or ínferiority, but ratherdefine lunctions and structure. TheGod-ordained structure is for thenurture and protection of fathers.mothers and children.

One hundred young people wereasked the follow¡ng question: "Whatperson in your life has exercised thegreatest influence in determiningyour behavior and beliefs? The in-fluence can be either for good orbad, and the person may or may notbe a part of your immediate family."The quick response of the majoritywas "My father."

ln each instance where a childnamed someone other than hisfather as the principal influence inhis life (unless the father was de-ceased), there were clear evidencesthat the teen had fairly serious per-sonalproblems.

The role of the father in the Ameri-can home has changed radicallysince World War ll. Those changes,at least statistically, have been indirect proportion to the increase inteenage problems.

There has been an enormousamount of criticism about thechanging role of women andrebellious children. The birth of thewomen's liberation movement, thephenomenal increase in the numberof working mothers, and the newlyheightened female sexual aggres-sion, have been cited as principalsources for most of our nation'shome problems.

With the intense focus upon thewoman and her changing role, theman has almost gotten off scot-freein the discussion about child rebel-lion. ïhat analysis is both unfair andunlrue.

WHAT CHILDREN NEEDFROM THEIR FATHER

STRENGTH

There is a poster seen in manyshops today that says, "Onty ingentleness is there real strength;only in strength can there be gentle-ness. "

ln our culture, with its confusionof sexual roles, men commonly donol know who they are. They are us-ually taught they must be strong andthis is interpreted by many as "Betough." "Don't cry, don't show fear,and don't admit to confusion or inde-cision."

The macho image, currenily dis-cussed and acted out, does not nec-essarily reflect true strength. ln fact,it may well be an attempt to projecta toughness that such a man secret-ly fears does not exist. Men learnearly in life to negate most of theirvulnerablefeelings. . . .

Realstrength comes from healthyself-acceptance. A popular sayingexpresses it well, "God made meand God don't make no junk!"

ln a search for humility manypeople have forgotten that Godmade man in His image, and theyhave made of themselves "wormsof the dust." A father who has thecourage to accept himself as the re-flection of God Himself can revel inthe beauty of this image because it

speaks of God's greatness.Theologically, it is understood

that man is a fallen being, but evenin that state he is capable of incred-ible intellectual and creative achieve-ments. The redeemed man is cap-able of fellowship with God Himself.ln Christ, we have all resourcesavailable to us. Let's live like it!

PROTECTION

Children are vulnerable and sens-itive, hence they are easily hurt, andthey feel those hurts deeply. Theyare also relatively helpless. Theyneed a protector. Fathers often stepaside and are gone when the childruns to them for slrength. Fathersneed to be there, not just physically,but for the child's emotional nurtur-tng.

A treasured memory from Dr. Ket-terman's childhood illustrates this.

"ln the springt¡me, Kansas oftenhad severe thunderstorms. There wasliltle to break the violenl winds onthose pla¡ns and the rain was blown intorrenls onlo the porch of our home. ltwould even run ¡nto the house att¡mes. While my mother would go tothe basement, in a logical search forsafety from possible tornadoes, myfather was calmly standing on theporch, sweeping off the water to keepthe house dry.

"As a ch¡ld I had a cho¡ce, to join mymother in the safe comfort of thebasement or lo stay w¡lh my lalher. Mychildish mind, however, saw no needfor a choice. I was truly safe only bymy father. He and his broom were allthe proteclion I needed. "

DISCIPLINE

Some years ago, one group ob-served that they were losing youngpeople from their beliefs. There wasgreat concern among the leaders ofthis faith since they highly value thefamily. Two university students stud-ied the problem in an unpublishedmaster's degree thesis. Their find-ings revealed that children were lostthrough the quality of the father'sdiscipline. The principles they pro-posed are sound.

ln summary, they concludedthere are basically four types offathers: neglectful-low in love, lowin discipline (he avoids his childrenand flees all responsibility); permis-sive-high in love, low in discipline

(he actually fears his children, wholead him); authoritarian-low inlove, high in discipline (he fights withhis children and forces obedience);authoritative-high in love, high indiscipline (he leads his children andfellowships with them).

It is clear both f rom this study andfrom scrioture that the authoritativefather ¡s the most successful. . . .

Children generally spend moretime with a mother than a father. lt isshe who feeds, nurses to health andsupervises daily events. She scoldsand guides, sometimes nags oreven yells out her f rustralions.There seems to be a callous thatforms on a child's eardrums so thathe no longer hears her scolding.

It is good for mothers to deal withdisciplinary problems as they arise.The father, otherwise, becomes herwhipping boy! The child needs anew voice, and it is desirable fordads when they are at home to ob-serve misbehavior and dealwith thisappropriately. A father's masculinevoice, physical strength and thef resh approach of his methods,makes him effective. . . .

VALUE

Through their early relationship,children no doubt take for grantedthat theyare special to their mothers.Today it is not so common that theyfeel secure with the father.

Much of the time. children musttest out this significant quality intheir relationshio with their dads."Does Dad really care about me?""Am I imoortant to him?" "How canI be sure?"

These are ouestions most chil-dren feel and rarely ask orally. Theymay, however, act them out in var-ious attention-gett¡ng behaviors.

Partly due to vocational demands,dad's opinions and values are not asfamiliar to the child as the mother's.Dads rarely talk about their valuesor beliefs with their children.

ln our survey, 100 young peoplewere asked this question, "Doesyour father personally communicateto you his moral and spiritualideals?" Only two responded affirm-atively.

It is often a cop-out when a fathersays, "lt is not the quantity of my

RESPECT

It has already been said that manyparents see their children as exten-sions of themselves or as an incon-venience. They need to recognizeeach child as a unique and valuableindividual. The parent is privileged toguide his potential toward the goalGod had in mind for the child.

When the father truly acknow-ledges the value of a child, he willrespect that child. Respect does notset the child above the father or,even in some ways does it see him,as a child, having equality with thedad. lt looks within the child and byfaith, beyond, seeing his potential.

Respect is an inner quality and isshown by one's attitude andmanner. When a child wants to talk.he needs 1o be heard with the intentlistening of the heart as well as themind. He needs to have a listener,within reason. at the time his ideasor oroblems arise.

A child, for example, may comehome bubbling with excitement

not permit ignoring or discountingthe child's feelings and problems,nor does it magnify them. Respectdoes not rescue the child from ahard job or consequences of misbe-havior.

Respecting a child says, "l knowthat is hard to do (or take), but I

know you can do it." Of course thatpresumes the parent does know hecan !

LAUGHTER

Life gets very heavy at times. Dur-ing times of stress, a good laughmay relieve lension and permit res-olution of the problems. A fatherwhotakes himself too seriously is oftenridiculed by his children. Fathersneed, however, to exercise goodjudgment regarding the time forhumor or seriousness.

A father who can laugh at himself ,

is likely to create a climate that iscomfortable for a child. Being ableto play together, share jokes andmistakes and laugh together appro-priately, will help families stay to-gether. Fathers can set the tone forsuch good humor!

PRAYER

Dr. Ketterman shares this fromher childhood:

"As a family, we gathered everymorning around a big circle ¡n our liv-

"Even more meaningful, however,were dad's private prayers. I vividly re-call getting up late one night for a drinkof waler. The house was lighted onlyby the moon as I tiptoed to the kitchen.I felt, rather than saw at first, my big,strong daddy, kneeling humbly by thekitchen chair, silently pouring out hisown deep needs to the HeavenlvFather.

"l knew then, rather than believed.that God was real and thal He must bevery þig indeed if my strong daddyneeded Him. Even now, I can't imaginehow I could have rebelled against sucha lather. "

A ROLE MODEL

Today, even adults are strugglingdeeply with role models. Most of theold concepts that identified male-ness and femaleness have beentake-n away by a new logic. Howveryconfus¡ng ¡t must be to a child.

There is a difference betweenmen and women. Twenty years ago,to make that simple statementwould have drawn laughter from anygroup. Today it raises the ludicrouðaccusation of sexism.

We are in a new process ofstumbling over the lerms chairper_son, his and her and committee Der_son. This unisexual trend takes awayfrom a child the means by which hóidentifies the qualities of malenessand femaleness.

The father is the chitd,s first rotemodel of God. God is not a psycho-logical extension of a child's imagi-nation, as humanists have argued.The child's view of God wiil Oð O¡s_torted if his dad does not exemptifygodly qualities.

Both sons and daughters learnabout manliness from their fathers.The type of man a son becomes andthe type of husband a daughter mar-ries will be strongly influenced bytheir perception of their father.

A man's treatment of his wife be-comes a pattern for both sons anddaughters. Boys learn how to begood husbands and daughters learnwhat to expect from thelr mates by

their dad's example. A father whoseattitudes and actions in his marriageare confused and inconsistent is arole model of unhappy marriage forhis children.

The father provides the rolemodel for value systems. ln thesecrucial days of competition for thechild's attention, it is imperative thatfathers provide positive values. . . .

FAIR AND PROMPT DECISIONSFROM DAD

Mothers and fathers often deferto one another in decisions regard-ing a child. Father needs to deter-mine what areas of family life he candelegate to the authority of his wifeand what he needs to retain exclu-sively.

This should be explained andmaintained consistenfly. When sucha plan is followed, there is litile roomfor manipulation, the child has aclear response which avoids frustra-tion, and the home functions moresmoothly.

C()NFUSED ROLE MODELS

It takes more than a man livingwithin the same four walls to be ãfather. Some biological fathersnever become functional fathers totheir children. The problem is espe-cially acute among professionals.

"The fatheris the child'sf irst rolemodel ofGod."Many pastors find it very difficult

to adjust to the dual role of fatherand God's minister with a divinemessage. The minister walks out ofthe pulpit and into the home wherehe has a responsibility both as hus-band and father.

Often he maintains a godlike im-age in the home and speaks with thesame sense of authority as in thepulpit. He is unbending and authori-tarian. The children find it confusingand difficult to distinguish betweenhis dual role as pastor and father.

Frequently, because of role con-fusion, the children have no func-tional father, only a pastor. Theymiss the warmth, humor and love ofa normalhome.

The reverse may also be true. Achild whose father is a minister mavnot have a functional pastor. Thófamily relationship is the most in-tense social contact known to man.

The intimacy of the home, whichexaggerates all the flaws and short-comings, often makes it difficult fora pastor to minister to his own familv.The visible mistakes in his life matiehim an ineffective spiritual leader inthe home. His children have heardhim publicly plead for better homeswhile they know their own is notwhat it should be.

Tragically, a congregation de-mands B0 to 100 hours each weekfrom a pastor, depriving the minis-ter's children of the physical pres-ence of their father.

A boy inevitably becomes muchlike his father unless he rebels. lnsuch a situation he may make mis-takes opposite to his dad's, butequally problematic. A fotk songwritten by Harry and Sandy Chapinpoignantly expresses the former:

My child arrived the other day;he came to the world in the usual wav.

But there were planes to catch and billdto pay; he learned to walk whileI was away.

And he was tatk¡n' 'fore I knew it. andas he grew he'd say

"l'm gonna be like you, Dad, you knowI'm gonna be like you."

And the cal's in the cradle andthe silver spoon,L¡ttle boy blue and the man in the moon.

President Don Elkins saidCombs, who arrives in the statesfrom Brazil this month, will teachat least 10 hours each semester Inaddition to his responsibilities asdean of men.

"We're very fortunate to have aman with Jim's abilities and cre-dentials join our facultY," con-tinued Elkins.

Mr. Combs, 42, resigned as aFree Will Baptist foreign missionaryto accept the Hillsdale post after16 years of service. Thepreacher's son and West Virginianative earned a bachelor of artsdegree at Free Will Baptist BibleCollege, Nashville, Tennessee, anda master of arts degree at the Uni-versity of Tulsa. Combs' graduatedegree is in educational guidancewith a counseling minor.

Since December, 1964, Jim andShirley Combs have labored asmissionaries in Brazil. During theirfirst term, they worked in SaoPaulo. Their second term centeredin the state of santa catarina. Amassive flood forced them to evac-uate temporarily in 1974.

Prior to his foreign missionarYappointment, Reverend Combspastored churches in Van Leer,Tennessee. and Franklin Furnace,Ohio.

The Combs' have three children:Kemper (14), Cindy (12), and Tania(9). Mrs. Combs is an Oklahomanative from Crowder.

JOHN SMITH TAKES HELM AT CCC

FRESNO, CA -The ReverendJohn BenjaminSmith, Jr., wasnamed presidentof CaliforniaChristian Collegeon April5, accord-ing to the CollegeBoard of Trus-tees. Smith suc-

ceeds Dr. Daniel Parkerwho vacatedthe CCC post in FebruarY.

Smith assumed presidential du-ties June 1. The 39-year-old Califor-nian was pastoring Oxnard Free WillBaptist Church, Oxnard, at the timeof his appointment by the Board. Heis a CCC alumnus, having graduatedin 1973 with a bachelor of sciencedegree in theology. Since 1974 hehas supervised the Oxnard ChristianAcademy in addition to his pastoralresponsibilities.

Smith said he expects the Collegeto operate with an efficient, butsmall staff this fall. "We plan tomake as few changes as possible,"he related. "We'll probably distrib-ute administrative duties among thefaculty, at least for the time being."

The new president confided thathe will immediately assume a heavyteaching load. "We need to livewithin our means financially. Thepeople in California expect that andappreciate the school doing it."

Smith, who has been preaching

15 years, shared, "The Lord con-vinced me that Christian educationwould have to be a Part of mY lifeand ministry when I graduated fromCCC in 1973."

One goal Mr. Smith sees asreachable in the fall of 1980 is "aviable two-year educational prog ramwhich students can take and thentransfer to other colleges if they sochoose."

"We will continue a strong BibleCollege emphasis here at CCC,"Smith asserted. "Every student willmajor in Bible, but we intend to offercurriculum broad enough to attractthe liberal arts student."

Prior to studying three Years atFree Will Baptist Bible College,Nashville, Tennessee, John B. Smithwas an electronics instructor in theUnited States Navy for 10 Years. Hepastored Harper Road Free WillBaptist Church, Joelton, Tennessee,in 1971 -1972. Since graduating fromCCC, Mr. Smith has studied towarda master's degree at CaliforniaGraduate School of TheologY in

MOLINE, lL-Delegates to the ttti-nois State Association which metMarch 28-29 in Moline cleared finalhurdles to employ a promotionalsecretary by voting a reallocation ofcooperative plan funds in order tounderwrite the office, according toModerator John Hollis.

Hollis said the 50 registered dele-gates discussed the promotionalsecretary issue at some length, butfinally voted for the state ExecutiveCommittee to proceed with plans tohire a promotionalofficer. Rev. Hollisconfirmed that the Executive Com-mittee expects the office to beoperational no later than June 1.

King, memberof Santa Paula FreeWill Baptist Church, worked in theD¡strict Attorney's Office as chief in-vestigator from the mid-1960's toearly 1970, when he became headof the Criminal Justice PlanningBoard, a position he held until Feb-ruary 29.

Mal King's pastor is Cecil Spur-lock. Reverend Spurlock said, "Thisfellow would be a great blessing toany church, but I am glad he's oneof my members. There will never beanyone in my life who will be agreater blessing than Mal King.What a worker!"

Mr. King, 47, teaches an adullSunday school class, spearheadsvisitation outreach in Santa PaulaChurch and serves on the church'sboard of trustees.

He earned a Master's degree atnight from the University of South-ern California. ln '1968 Mal King wascited by the Federal Bureau of ln-vestigation at the prestigious FBINational Academy in Washington.He garnered the J, Edgar HooverMedal for Excellence in the Study ofLaw Enforcement.. Director Dr. Leonard Ellinwoodsays the project will include a "sur-vey of Free Will Baptist Hymnody"by Dr. Vernon Whaley, music coor-dinator at Free Will Baotist BibleCollege. Whaley's survey was pre-pared as a master's thesis in 1978at Luther Rice Seminary.

Dr. Ellinwood said. "We have in-dexed nearly 5,000 collectionscovering all denominations includingthe Free Will Baptists. Out of nearlya million index cards. we estimatethere will be 250,000 individualhymns with first lines, refrains andtitles alphabetized."

The dictionary will also includeessays on the hymnody of each de-nomination as well as instrumentalaccompaniment, social movementsin hymnody, editing hymnals, copy-right protection of authors, doxolo-gies, biographies of hymn writersand numerous other related mate-rial.

NASHVILLE, TN-Wilson Cooper,Master's Men chapter member atTippets Chapel Free Will BaptistChurch, Clayton, North Carolina,presented the keys of a mini-motorhome to Master's Men General Di-rector, Loyd Olsan on April 25 duringthe Second Annual Master's MenConference which met at HillmontCamp, White Bluff, Tennessee.

The mobile office concept sur-faced one year ago when Olsan out-lined the need to travel and visitchaoters and churches in order toeffectively promole Master's Men.The mobile office does two things-it enables the Master's Men directorto both travel and take his work, thuskeeping up with the correspondenceworkload. I ncoming correspondenceis checked at the Nashville office.and letters which need action areforwarded to designated locations.

The mobile office conceot wasfirst presented at the Master's MenBoard Meeting in March, 1979, withthe board giving permission to pro-ceed. The first public presentationwas to men attendino the First An-

nual Master's Men Conference inApril, 1979. lt was again presentedduring the annual Master's MenBreakfast at the national associationin Charlotte, North Carolina, lastJuly. This was followed by aneditorial in the October, November,December, 1979, ATTACK Maga-zine.

DISTINCTION BETWEENPREACHING AND TEACHING

The New Testament distinctionbetween preaching and teaching isnot commonly made. The pulpit de-livery of the pastor involves bothpreaching and teaching. lt is impor-tant to distinguish between what ispreaching and what is teaching be-cause oi the difference in the natureof the authority that accompanieseach.

Give attention first to kêrussõwhich is translated "preach." Ac-cording lo Thayer's Greek Lexicon,kêrussõ means, "To proclaim afterthe manner of a herald; always withthe suggestion of formality, gravity,and authoritywhich must be listenedto and obeyed."

There is authority that goes withpreaching because it is a messagefrom God. lt is dealing with the gos-pel and the indisputable truths ofChristianity. To believe Christianitytrue is to believe that which ispreaching, in the New Testamentage of the word, to be true. Thatwhich is unquestionably true is to beobeyed or one must suffer the con-sequences.

Teaching includes everything thatis embraced by preaching and allother Christian truth and its applica-tion to life. Teaching involves ex-

Discussion does not take placeduring the delivery of a sermon, butit would be in order for a person towant to discuss a part of the sermonwith the pastor after the service.

ln preaching one proclaims whathe considers to be clearly truebased on divine authority. The con-tent of preaching should be the areaof truth on which all sincere and in-formed Christians are agreed. lnpreaching it is stated as truth to beobeyed.

ln teaching the pastor seeks topersuade a person that what hesays is a correct interpretation ofthe Word of God. When the teacheris not convinced that he knows theinterpretation, he offers any assist-ance he can to the student.

We preach the basic morality ofthe Ten Commandments. When itcomes to the application of the prin-ciples of the Ten Commandmentsbeyond the literal application, wemust rely on teaching if that applica-tion is not made for us in the NewTestament.

When our convictions andstandards are derived from applica-tion of principles taught in the Bibleto situations not specifically men-tioned in the Bible, we set them forthby teaching, not preaching.

This does not lessen their impor-tance if they are a true application ofthe principles of the Word of God,but it does mean that we have to de-pend upon persuading people ratherthan delivering to them a clear-cut,indisputable divine directive.

We preach "Jesus saves" topeople. We teach our various doc-trines. We do not expect people tobelieve them simply because we saythey are true. We seek a favorableresponse by setting forth a convinc-ing case based on scripture.

When a distinction is not madebetween preaching and teachingauthority, it confuses both pastorand people.

The pastor who thinks preachingauthority extends to all that he saysf rom the pulpit runs into twoproblems: (1) He is frustrated be-cause people do not accept every-thing he says and put Ît intopractice.(2) Because he expects people toobey simply because he says some-thing, he will tend to fail to prepareconvincing sermons that appeal topeople as thinking, feeling, actingbeings who have a right to an intelli-gent basis for what they believe andpractice.

To a great extent the pastor'sauthority is an earned authority-earned because he knows what heis talking about and speaks con-vincingly. lt was said of Stephen,"And they were not able to resist thewisdom and the spirit by which hespoke" (Acts 6:10).

It is interesting to observe whatPaul said to Titus, "These thingsspeak, and exhort, and rebuke withall authority. Let no man despisethee" (fitus 2:15).

The word that is translated "de-spise" is periphroneõ. According toA.T. Robertson in Word Pictures inthe New Testament, this wordmeans "to think around." lt is as if

Paul said to ïitus, "Let no man thinkcircles around you, or let no man outthink you."

It was by letting no man out thinkhim that Titus was to maintainauthority. lt was the authority of onewho had done his homework andpresented a good case. Robertsonpoints out that the way for a ministerto command respect is to do thethinking that deserves it.

While the preaching of the gospelhas the authority of God behind itand should be obeyed, and thosewho refuse to obey it will suffereternal judgment, the preacher isnot supposed to rest his case solelyon the matter of stating the facts.

He never enters into a discussionin which the truth of the gospel isnegotiable, so far as he is con-cerned, but he does reason withpeople about the gospel.

Paul's preaching was accom-panied by reasoning from the scrip-tures. This is evidenced by the useof the word dialegeomai in Acts17:2: 1B:4, 19; and 24:25 where it istranslated "reason," and Acts 17:'17and 19:8, 9 where it is translated"dispute".

Paul's preaching was also ac-companied by persuasion. This isevidenced by use of the word peltfrõ,translated persuade in Acts 13:43;18:4; 19:8; 20:28; 28:23: and ll Cor-inthians 5:11.

The reasoning and persuadingthat accompanied Paul's preachingwas teaching. Teaching recognizesthe one addressed as being a per-sonal being. lt recognizes him asone who thinks feels and acts.

We should not expect people tofollow us simply because of our po-sition. Pastors need to cultivate re-spect by thinking through things andpresenting a strong case for whatlhey believe.

We have already discussed theproblem presented to the pastorwhen he fails to distinguish betweenpreaching authority and teachingauthority. Now let us look at theproblem presented to the laymen.

When no distinction is made be-tween preaching authority andteaching authority, the laymanthinks that he is being told to obeyeverything the preacher says whe-ther he is convinced or not.

This presents two problems.There are some who tend to give ablind, nonlhinking loyalty to whatthey hear. This may seem to workuntil they hear two pastors set forthdifferent views. This type personwhile causing no trouble will havehis own thought processes stifled.He is not prepared for the changingscenes of life.

The second oroblem comes tothose who feel that if they are ex-pected to obey everything they hearthe pastor say simply because hesaid it, that a problem is created forthem. They feel they have a rightand a responsibility to think. Yet, ifthey obey without being convinced,they must either set their own think-ing aside, or they must violate theirown thinking. Strong people cannotdo this. We need strong people aslaymen as well as pastors.

lf the pastor wants to developstrong laymen, he must be strong inhis teaching. He must not expectpeople to agree if they have notbeen convinced.

There must be a basic harmony inthe church, but there must also beroom for some degree of differencewhere Christians do not alwaysagree. Strong, mature, thinkingpeople must have room for some dif-ference.

WORDS USED LESS FREOUENTLY

ln this study we omit nothing inthe New Testament that could haveanybearing on the nature of pastoralauthority. For that reason we nowcall attention to a few other words.

There are four more words trans-lated "preaching" with reference toNew Testament preaching. Dialeg-omai is translated "preaching" inActs 20:7, 9. This word has been re-ferred to earlier. lt occurs 13 timesand in all the other places is trans-lated either as "reason" or "dis-pute".

Katagge I l-o is translated " preach "10 times. lt is translated "show"three times; "declare" twice;"teach" and "speak of" once each.According to Thayer, it means "toannounce, declare, promulgate,make known; to proclaim publicly,publish."

Another word,laleõ, is most com-monly translated "speak". Of its

295 occurrences in the New Testa-ment, it is translated "preach" onlysix times.

Panésidzomai is translated"preach boldly" in Acts 9:27. Thisword tells more about boldness andconfidence than it does about theauthority of preaching. There isnothing in any of these words thatwould add new light to the authorityof the pastor.

With regard to words that aretranslated "teach", kattaggellowhich is translated "teach" once isreferred to in the paragraph above.Katecheõ is translated "teach" inRomans 2:18; I Corinthians 4:19;and Galatians 6:6. lt occurs fivemore times and is translated "in-struct" and " informed".

Mathêteuõ is translated "teach"ir¡ Matthew 28:20 and Acts 14:21.This word actually means "to dis-ciple" or "to make a disciple."

Paideuõ is translated "teach"twice (Acts 22:3 and Titus 2:12). Thisword would probably be bettertranslated "train". lt is also trans-lated "chasten" and "chastise"severaltimes.

There are a few other words thatdeal with making known spiritualtruth. Anaggellõ ¡s translated"showed" in Acts 20:20; "declare"in Acts 20:27 and I John 1:5; and"reported" in I Peter 1:12.

Apaggellõ is translated "showed"in Acts 26:20 and "declare" in I John1:3.

Gn-oridzõ is translated "declare"in I Corinthians 15:1; and "makeknown" in Ephesians 1:9 and ll Peter1:16.

Ekthêmi is translated "expound"in Acts 18:26 and 28:23. L

It all began last week when myhusband called from work. "HiHonlHow is it going?"

"Oh, OK I guess (sigh)," I replied."What's wrong?""Oh, nothing.""Honey?""Well, it's your daughter-she is

right behind me undoing all l'vedone and your son's Lincoln Logsare all over the den for the third timetodayl"

Of course they are my beautifulchildren, too, but at the time I would-n't claim them.

To which my husband replied,"Hon, I'm going to send you back towork so you'll keep your sanity!"

The daily routine of caring for afour-yearold super kid and a '15-

month climber was about to causeme to lose all joy of hornemaking. Somuch so that my husband wouldrather me go back to an outside jobthan put up with my complaints.

But what does the above have todo with Sweeting? I'm getting tothat.

POWER Tf) STAY

That afternoon I sat down duringCarol's nap and Kevin's WoodyWoodpecker cartoon show to readthe March 1980 Moody Monthly.

First page headlines struckhOME_STAYING POWER. Dr.Sweeting in his editorial wrote"There is nothing in this world likeold-fashioned dependability. Lukestates the apostolic church 'contin-ued steadfastly in the apostles' doc-trine' (Acts 2:42'1. I like that. Rain,storm, poverty, or persecution couldnot stop them. These Christians hadstaying power."

Being a "preacher's kid" and a"missionary's kid," I had heard allmy life about this thing called de-pendability. My dad, Luther San-ders, often preached on this attributeand quoted Bob Jones, Sr., "thegreatest ability is dependabi lity. "

And believe me as a missionaryfamily we were often in the placewhere it took a lot of staying power.But I saw staying power only in lightof the missionary pastor. Dr. Sweet-ing brought it to my situation as hecontinued:

"Staying power brings usthrough life's experiences, not

only for the missionary andpastor, but for the businessperson and homemaker. lttakes no superior intelligenceto quit. Any fool can do that . . .

The place of greatest opportu-nity is usually right where weare. "Staying power for the home-

maker, too. Ouch ! The idea of goingback to work had been very invitingjust to "get out of the house". Mr.Sweeting later in the article said"God does not require us to be suc-cessful, but He does require us to befaithful. "

COURAGE T() FACE LIFE

The next evening found my familyat Wednesday night prayer meeting.We had a guest speaker who had atext f rom Judges 11:30-35.

He related the story of Jephthahwho made a vow to the Lord to givethe first thing that came forth fromhis house if the Lord would give himsuccess in battle. Well, Jephthah'sdaughter, an only child, was the oneto greet him and he carried out hisvow because "l have opened mymoulh unto the Lord, and I cannotgo back (v. 35)."

Oh, that struck home. I hadvowed a vow too-to do the best jobpossible with the children the Lordgives us. I had to work until our first-born was three, and I longed to bethe one playing ball with him andreading him stories and feeding himlunch.

So my husband and I agreed that I

would stay home when our daughterwas born. And right now in our ownfamily situation I need to be homewith our preschoolers more than weneed that extra financial income.

I realized I could not go back. I

had made a vow. Staying power nowis my daily request to the Lord.

My thanks to those two preachersand their sermons. I needed that!God gave you men the right words atthe right time.

Joy is back in my homemaking. r

that "the fruit of the Spirit" includespeace. Evidently, the early Chris-tians emphasized peace as charac-teristic of a believer.

They made the word part of theirbasic greeting. Most of the epistlesinclude it in the opening salutation;many of them include it as part ofthe closing. The beautifulwords of llThessalonians 3:16 provide an ex-ample: "The Lord of peace. . . giveyou peace always."

Fact 1: Peace is f reedom f romgulf. Justification is the foundationof this aspect of peace, andrighteous living is a practical neces-sity to its continuance.

Facl 2: Peace is freedom fromenmity with God. This aspect ofpeace, closely related to the previ-ous one, rests on reconciliation.

Fact 3: Peace is freedom fromanxiety. This practical side of peaceis spoken of in Philippians 4:6,7 andconsists in the absence of worry/tension/fretting over things. lt restson believing prayer.

Faith-both the initial saving faithand continued trust in God-isessential. So is prayer-believing,confident prayer. Then practicingrighteousness-doing right-mak-es an imÞortant contribution. And sodoes loving God's "law."

That brings us back where westarted: The fruit of the Soirit ispeace. The Spirit of God is at workwithin us to develop the mature fruitof peace in our hearts, and the suc-cess of His work is directly relatedto the measure of our meeting lheseconditions.

ne of the most difficult les-sons a Christian learns iswhen and how to wait on the

Lord. lt's time for us to oull out oflife's fast lane and oark it for a while.

Who started the rumor that wemeasure spirituality by the degree ofexcitement, enthusiasm, emotional-ism and energies that characterizea oerson or church? To fall belowsome worked-up standard is con-sidered a sign of deadness, disinter-est and disobedience to the Lord.

But waiting patiently on the Lord¡ndicates none of those bad things.He who understands the Word ofGod and the ways of God learns towait on God.

THE ADM()NITION

It is out of a time of heartache,f rustration and dead-end streets thatthe Psalmist admonishes us to walton the Lord (Psalm 37:7). When theeasy answers are all gone, it's timeto wait. Friends, we are there.

Waiting implies submrssion toGod's Word. ln spite of how onefeels or what others do. the Word ofGod must be obeyed. NO excep-tions. The Bible is a stable and suffi-cient authority.

It is much easier to do somethingjust because something needs to bedone, than to hush one's restlessspirit and wait in holy patience forGod to do His work. A silent tonguein many cases indicates a wise headand a holy heart.

Since man's ways are inconsistent with God's way, waiting de-mands suömrssion to the way ofGod? Man is impatient; God is not.Time is nothing to Him; let it benothing 1o us.

God's way is worth waiting for.Though God often seems to tarrylong, He is never late. Even when wethink events rush too quickly, Godarrives exactly on schedule.

Suömisslon to the Work of Godtempers the waiting. While the Lordis weaving His will in human history,be patient. Wait for Him to work.When God works it cannot be ex-plained by natural man.

What God does, man cannot do.

THE ASSURANCE

Waiting on God brings results inprosperity (Lamentations 3:25-26).God opens His goodness to thosewho trust Him enough to wait. Divineprotection is promised to those who

wait (Proverbs20:22).Those who wait rise on the majes-

tic wings of His power (lsaiah 40:31).This truth must saturate the mind ifeffective work is done for the Lord.

Waiting on the Lord guaranteesdivine perception (Psalm 25:3-5).Understanding the ways of God re-quires time-time spent alone withHim. Those who practice patiencebefore God soon discover the valueof waiting.

Divine peace surrounds thosewho wait patiently with the Lord (Job14:14; Psalm 52:9). Their souls glowwith His peace.

THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Waiting on the Lord hones per-sonal discipline. And it takes discip-line when you wait for the Lord towork in His way and time.

Personal development resultsfrom waiting on the Lord. Those whowait understand that the work is theLord's, as they learn to trust and relyupon Him. The progressive growthof believers in faith, courage, stead-fastness and service is inseparablylinked to this waiting process.

Personal dependence on the Lordis acknowledged by those who wait.Human abilities are ínsufficient toaccomplish the Lord's work. Onedoes not walk far in the Christian lifebefore he learns this imoortant truth.

Time spent waiting on God is notwasted time. r
