Hello from the Douglas Park Community Association!

Another summer at Douglas Park gone too quickly...

We are excited to announce the opening this September of our after-school care at Emily Carr Elementary for 24 children in grades 1-3. This project was a team effort involving a renovation of the primary lunch room at Emily Carr financed by a $63,000 grant from the City of Vancouver and $29,000 from the DPCA. We would like to thank the principal and staff at Emily Carr, the City of Vancouver, the VSB, and Community Care Facilities Licensing (Vancouver Coastal Health).

On Saturday June 11th we hosted our annual Douglas Park Community Day celebration. A special thank you to our staff who ensured that despite the poor weather a fabulous time was had by all. The event featured DPCA programs, main stage entertainment and community groups. We would like to acknowledge and thank our event sponsors, supporters and volunteers.

The Douglas Park Preschool received a Childcare Legacy Award from the Ministry of Children and Family Development to congratulate Douglas Park’s preschool for having been in operation for over 40 years! The award was presented to Douglas Park in July by Attorney General and Minister of Justice for British Columbia Suzanne Anton.

As you are probably already aware, our existing playground is being replaced as part of the City of Vancouver’s playground renewal work. An open house will be held on Thursday October 13 at 7pm to display concepts for community input. Closing of the current playground and construction of the new one is anticipated for late summer/early fall of 2017. Our Playground Committee is actively raising funds to ensure that the new playground is as diverse, interesting and challenging as the cur-rent playground. Donations can be made online at http://douglasparkcc.org/about/playground-renewal/ or by cheque at the front desk.

Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Wednesday November 16 at 7pm. We are looking for new directors. If you are interested, please contact [email protected] or see the front office. We look forward to including more voices from our community!

Thank you to all the volunteers, board members, staff, and the Vancouver Park Board who working as a team continue to make Douglas Park Community Centre the heart of our neighbourhood.

Sincerely,

Christine Coleman DPCA Vice-President
