Astro continues to be a large part of the daily lives for almost 3.5 million television-owning families and 12.3 million weekly listeners across Malaysia. Every day, our content in local sports, news and education provides Malaysian households with access to events of national interest as well as knowledge-based and educational content.

The past years have made the TV programming market highly competitive with liberalisation and several new entrants. However, we believe that our social commitment remains unique, as we use our years of experience by contributing to education and nation building.

We believe that this gives us an edge with our customers who trust us to provide high-quality, engaging, and responsible programming which meets their entertainment, education, and information needs.

With public interest in social responsibility steadily growing, Astro is pleased to release our fifth instalment of “Inspiring Sustainability” which covers our corporate responsibility activities until 2012.

Commitment to disclosure

Our commitment to disclosure remains steadfast because we believe that sharing our goals, efforts and progress encourages better management of our commitment to sustainability. This is in turn contributes to greater economic efficiency and greater capacity to generate wealth. This is important as it is not just for the benefit of the investor but also for the gain for society.

Communicating the Group’s performance in our commercial, environmental, social, and governance activities enhances our brand, improves credibility and boosts operational efficiencies – all of which are crucial ingredients to become a service provider that matters to all our stakeholders.

role of Corporate responsibility in Astro

Over the years, we have grown to learn that corporate responsibility is not just about doing the right thing for the community. Behaving responsibly offers direct business benefits that cannot be gained through any other means. A good reputation and positive public perception sets us apart in the eyes of our stakeholders which include our investors, suppliers, employees and even our customers.

Fair business practices are no longer preferred but now insisted upon. And reducing resource use, waste and emissions does not just help the environment but also allows us to stretch the ringgit. Putting our audience first in content creation has ensured that we have always been able to provide for the evolving wants and needs of our consumers, from delivering superior technology in media delivery to providing the best value that money can buy. Add to that our keen ear to listen as well as the drive and commitment of our employees to continuously Go Beyond to serve our customers, and we have a fail-safe method to success.

the road to results

As CSR gains momentum in the business community, we recognise that we still have much room for improvement to become truly sustainable. Corporate Responsibility has now started to seep into the DNA of our company – established through the way we engage with our stakeholders, the way we think about giving back to what we take from communities and the environment as well as our continuous commitment to build the best value proposition for the people we serve.

We have made tremendous impact in revolutionising the way Malaysian students learn through our Learning platforms in 10,000 schools across the country. Our employees have served more than 58,408 volunteer hours in a diverse range of grassroots communities across the nation through Community service. We have partnered the Malaysian community arm of Cardiff City Football Club, 1Malaysia Cardiff City, the Badminton Association of Malaysia and other reputable sporting bodies to encourage healthy participation in Sports and Wellness and encouraged youth to consider a career in the sports industry. We continue to influence behaviours with regards to Environmental practices at the workplace as well as at sea through our record breaking under water programmes. In addition to this, we continue to make innovations in the Malaysian media industry with technologies unique only to Astro to enhance the experience of all TV viewers and radio listeners in the country.

As we do this, we continue to discover and learn to use all the building blocks we require to achieve true sustainability and we are gradually aligning our various Corporate Responsibility programmes to our four pillars – Lifelong Learning, Sports & Wellness, Community Development and the Environment. Moving forward, we continue to ensure that all our CR activities are result-oriented, strategically planned and executed and amalgamated towards a bigger picture.

In the coming year, we will be consolidating and assessing our programmes and contributions to ensure that these activities are useful, relevant and timely to our stakeholders. We will intensify our engagement activities with our stakeholders, continue to implement programmes to make Astro a great place to work and seek out new partners and possibilities for collaboration to serve the community.

None of our efforts and programmes would have succeeded without the help and contribution of all our customers, listeners, suppliers, regulators, employees and other stakeholders. It is your support that has made Astro what we are today, and so we ask you to once more to continue to lend your support so that we may achieve more for all our stakeholders, the community and for the country.

Strategy for Sustainability

We recognise our businesses are driven by passionate people who work tirelessly to earn the loyalty of our customers who have remained with us for over 15 years. Therefore, the foundation of our strategy has always revolved around people.

We have identified four corporate responsibility pillars, namely Lifelong Learning, Sports and Wellness, Community Development and Environment, to determine how we can best contribute towards greater good.

lifelong learning

Going beyond what is expected of a media entertainment company through National Codes of Compliance, we are cognisant of the need to ensure our content brands are positive role models. Beyond utilising tools such as rating systems and parental locks, we are determined to produce content that instil life-enriching values in our viewers and listeners.

Following encouraging response to our TUTOR TV UPSR channel from students, parents and teachers in 2010, we launched TUTOR TV PMR and TUTOR TV SPM to help PMR and SPM students revise for major papers. The programmes helped more than a thousand students in a single month at the height of the examinations.

To make sure our Learning platform reaches more students, we organised Kampus Astro on Wheels, Kampus Astro Bersama Komuniti Sekolah and Karnival Kampus Astro, where more than 400 Astrolites travelled 14,000km across the country to visit over 500 schools to help approximately 100,000 students.

Sports and wellness

Together with ESPN Star Sports, Astro again made broadcast history in Malaysia this year by bringing the first-ever 3D live telecast of the Barclays Premier League (BPL) to sports fans across the nation.

To encourage participation in sports among children, we introduced 1MCC-Astro Kem BOLA, an opportunity for boys and girls between 10-12 years old to train under professional coaches from 1Malaysia Cardiff City (1MCC), the Malaysian community arm of Championship League winner and newly promoted to the BPL, Cardiff City Football Club.

With badminton being the favourite sports of so many Malaysians, we launched Kem Badminton Astro. We are collaborating with the Badminton Association of Malaysia to unearth and train young talents to be the next world champion.

Page 13: Download latest sustainability Report

11 ASTRO MALAYSIA HOLDINGS BERHADsustainability report 2013

Community development

We encourage the spirit of giving via Astro Kasih employee volunteer program, which has reached out to hundreds of people nationwide from children in paediatric wards, underprivileged children, cancer patients to fishermen communities.

We are pleased with Astro Hostel Project, which kicked off in Sekolah Kebangsaan Magandai in Kota Marudu, Sabah, where we built a hostel to provide 100 students with comfortable living facilities for a better learning environment. Without needing to walk hours through the jungle to get to school, the results of this project were encouraging, seeing an increase in the number of student enrolment as well as a boost in academic performance. SK Magandai achieved impressive results in the UPSR examination last year, with a passing rate of 87.5%, which more than doubled the 41.6% passing rate in 2010 and 50% in 2009.

Embracing the power of the people, the maiden Suara Kami Karnival 2011 rallied thousands of young people in celebration of our 15th anniversary and Malaysia Day. With big names such as Yuna, Hujan, Faizal Tahir, Pop Shuvit, and Stacy, the festivities peaked when the event was graced by our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, demonstrating the importance of engaging with the future generation.

environment

This year marked the culmination of our three-year commitment to our Environmental Strategic Plan. Amidst the challenges faced, we are encouraged to review and reflect on our targets, achievements, strategies and efforts to achieve better outcomes in the future. Moving forward, we will include Scope 2 and 3 emissions into our carbon accounting on top of our efforts to reduce the usage of electricity, water and waste at our facility. We are also looking to include our other business operations within the Klang Valley footprint to achieve a Company-wide effort to go green.

Over the last 15 years, our key performance matrices have grown from strength to strength, driven primarily by continued strong demand for our products and services. In an ever evolving business environment, our accomplishments in corporate responsibility must grow in tandem with the scope of our businesses.

2013 is the year of Astro Team ‘Going Beyond’. With this theme driving our business and corporate responsibility efforts, we are excited to see what positive contribution we can bring to the community.

GROUP RISKMANAGEMENT

As a leading media and entertainment provider, the Group faces many challenges in achieving its strategic objectives. The Group’s Risk Management initiatives guided by the Group Risk Management Framework aim to timely identify, proactively evaluate the impact and consequences of these risks, and ensure the Group’s preparedness and its ability to mitigate them in response to the evolving economic and regulatory landscapes as well as innovations and technological advancements. The continuous risk management and monitoring process is reported by the respective business units to the Group Risk Management Committee and thereafter to the Audit Committee and the Board as depicted in the diagram below.

The key risks highlighted and summarised below are not exhaustive.

We continuously identify risks which may affect the financial performance and sustainability of our operations, to ensure that we achieve our objectives in the immediate and long-term. Astro Malaysia Holdings (AMH) and subsidiaries are governed by the legal, regulatory and business environment in Malaysia, and developments within these areas are therefore carefully monitored.

Page 17: Download latest sustainability Report

15 ASTRO MALAYSIA HOLDINGS BERHADsustainability report 2013

Market and Competition

We acknowledge the presence of competition in the TV and content media market in Malaysia including players offering bundled mobile, TV and data services. Additionally, there may be competitive pressures on our TV and Radio Adex share. The Group is cognisant of the competitive landscape and has established theappropriate strategies and measures to compete in this environment. More information can be found on pages 20 to 25.

political, legal and regulatory

The Group operates in an industry that is subject to a broad range of rules and regulations put in place by various governing bodies and relevant authorities. New rules and regulations may also be implemented from time to time and we recognise that any non-compliances thereof may have a material adverse effect on the Group’s financial performance and operations. To manage any potential uncertainties, the Board and Management constantly keep abreast with all relevant developments and are in regular contact with the relevant authorities and the Group’s legal advisors, and emphasise strict compliance with all relevant rules and regulations. More information can be found on pages 16 to 19.

Services Availability

The Group is highly dependent on a wide range of systems, including the MEASAT-3 and MEASAT-3a satellites, broadcast equipment and business systems, in order to deliver high-quality services to our customers. The Group continually reviews and enhances its systems and their interconnectivity to minimise service interruption. The Group also has two broadcast centres and alternative hot-site for its business systems which provides redundant capacity for transmission and business resumption purposes. Business continuity plans are regularly reviewed and tested by the Group coupled with a fit-for-purpose insurance program to further mitigate business losses. More information can be found on page 22.

procuring exclusive and Compelling Content

Popular content with TV audiences is pivotal for customer acquisition and retention. The increasing cost of sourcing or procuring external content, especially relating to sports and premium content, as well as third-party channels licensed for a limited period may result in our inability to obtain or renew compelling TV content at acceptable rates. In our radio operations, the ability to produce appealing radio content is key to the Group’s position as the leading radio network in Malaysia. Thus, the Group constantly explores opportunities to develop proprietary-signature content and works closely with key programme providers while diversifying its sources of third-party content. More information can be found on page 22.

technology and Innovation

Technology and innovation are critical to our business and industry. The Group strives to be at the forefront in technology and innovation to achieve the first mover advantage in making content available on all platforms from DTH to IPTV to Astro on the Go (AOTG). At the same time, our facilities and equipment are continuously being upgraded to enhance security, improving delivery of high definition and rolling out quality customer experiences. The Group has also taken steps to maintain best in class operations with 99.9935% availability while ensuring its systems remain current and relevant through continuous maintenance and system upgrades.

Financial

The effective management of its financial exposures namely foreign currency, interest rates and credit risks are key to preserving the Group’s profitability and sustainability. The Group’s Finance team provides support to management and to ensure accurate financial reporting and tracking of the Group’s business performance with monthly reporting on financial performance provided to the Board. The Group guided by the Treasury policy under the purview of the Treasury Committee, also manages risk to capital and cash investments by providing appropriate protection against foreign currency and interest rate movements. More information can be found on page 6 and in our Annual Report.

people

The Group’s success depends to a significant extent upon, among other factors, our ability to continue to attract, retain and develop our human capital and talent across our operations. Thus, our inability to do so could have a material and adverse effect on our business, prospects, results of operations and financial position. Fourth para, last sentence to be changed to: The Group’s people strategies strives to make Astro a great place to work through various talent development initiatives such as programmes for graduate studies, apprenticeships and leadership development programmes for high potential staff. Management also actively cultivates a talent pool which is part of the Group’s key functions succession planning.

branding and reputation

Brand identity and brand value are crucial to operating companies within the Group as it drives overall reputation of the organisation. The Group advocates corporate responsibility through programmes that focus on community development, education, nurturing of our youth and conservation of the environment. The Group has launched the Go Beyond branding campaign that integrates all subsidiaries within the Group as well as to reinforce our brand equity in the public’s eyes.

Partnerships with people and organisations from civil society are an integral part of our company’s success. Contributing to Achieving National Goals

Government support is critical to the success of any business therefore making it necessary to establish and maintain good working relationships with authorities at different levels particularly in the constituencies of which we operate.

As a media conglomerate, our presence in half of the country’s households play a significant role in nation building and social influence. Aligned with the government’s goals in fostering continued peace, social harmony and economic growth, Astro prides itself in promoting unity in diversity through a shared consciousness and experience.

Our unique reach to 3.5 million Malaysian households provides an extraordinary position for Astro as a company to practice corporate responsibility in our business operations. On a practical level, government authorities with long-established relationships with the communities we operate in, as well as other local and national stakeholder groups, play a crucial role in convening and facilitating discussions between our work and stakeholder representatives. Many of our CR projects aimed at demonstrating goodwill in the community require extensive government-led consultations which may be related to regional economic planning, environmental permitting or exploration licensing, details on land and assets or the design and management of infrastructure.

Therefore, a good rapport with the government through a shared vision and managed expectations is key in our efforts to carry out projects that benefit the community and the nation as a whole. For a more extensive analysis on Astro in the Community, see pages 36 to 45.

engaging our regulators

The nature of our business requires strict compliance to a number of crosscutting media- and security-related regulations. Our TV and radio companies are subject to the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998 (MCMC), governed by the Ministry of Information, Communications and Culture (MICC) while our production and publishing businesses are compelled to observe the regulations set by the National Film Development of Malaysia (FINAS) and the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Astro regularly engages our regulators and related government agencies to ensure complience. Regulatory compliance trainings are held no less than twice a year, where relevant employees are briefed on the governing regulations. Our publications also go through equally stringent filtering procedures during the editional process.

empowering our people

Astro’s success is impacted and influenced to a large extent by the actions and behaviours of internal stakeholders. At Astro, we believe that our people are the driving factor behind our every accomplishment and milestone. It is therefore crucial to ensure a healthy working environment to make sure that our employees are mentally and emotionally invested in their work as the largest contributors to Astro’s success. We have dedicated an entire chapter on Empowering Our People on pages 26 to 35.

Astro Kasih was strategically designed to engage our employees in a Volunteer Program which has proven to have tangible benefits to our employees, shareholders, the community and the company alike. For an in-depth look into Astro Kasih, please refer to Astro in the Community on pages 36 to 45.

putting our Customers First

Over the years, we’ve learnt to place a high value on listening to our customers to help us understand their current and future needs. This also allows as to gauge satisfaction levels of the current services we provide and gives us that opportunity to solicit helpful feedback on potential programs or initiatives. We have designed and implemented an extensive engagement process to gather specific and targeted information to guide our future organisational activities and procedures. For further information on these engagement processes, turn to Astro in the Marketplace on page 20.

The growing public awareness on sustainable practices has also drawn our attention on ensuring that our products, services and business operations have the environment at its best interests. This year, we close the first commitment period of our 3-year Environmental Strategic Plan (2009 – 2011). Please see Caring for the Environment on pages 46 to 49 for our full report.

Managing the Media

The media has a considerable influence on public opinion, and can improve or harm how we are viewed in equal measure. It is therefore crucial to keep a close and transparent relationship with the media to ensure that we are not portrayed incorrectly on issues related to our work.

The channels of communication with the media extend widely considering our own stake in the business. We use press releases to provide information about our product launches alongside publishing them on our own media channels which are readily available to the public. We also publish financial results, announce important events and detail our response to significant issues.

In the Digital Age, we also use the various forms of media, platforms, some of which have evolved into a medium of interaction for our various teams conducting marketing and customer engagement, research and analytics, internal communications, customer service and human resources.

working with NGos and Interest Groups

Civil societies play a crucial role in filling the gaps that are not occupied by Government or businesses. Valued as an integral part of any healthy society, we continually engage with these groups as either sounding boards, benchmarks to social trends and even partners where our values are aligned. We demonstrate our associations with a number of NGOs and interest groups on page 44 of the Astro in the Community section and page 46 of the Caring for the Environment section.

Shaping a healthy Supply Chain

Our supply chain comprises of all companies and organisations that provide goods or services to our company as well as to our customers. Ensuring a sustainable and healthy supply chain is essential to delivering value for money, identifying risks and aligning with best practice supply chain initiatives. We have developed several channels of managing our supply chain which can be further detailed on page 22 at the Astro in the Marketplace section.

132) alongside a special documentary which explores the life of P. Ramlee on the History Channel.

Riding on this campaign, the History Channel in collaboration with Astro and Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur hosted an appreciation concert titled “Konsert Penghargaan P. Ramlee Di Mana Kan Ku Cari Ganti” which brought together a string of big names in the music industry, such as Dato Sharifah Aini, M Nasir, Ning Baizura, Hujan, Meet Uncle Hussein, Yuna, Ella, Shahir and Aizat whom performed cover versions of songs made popular by the late P. Ramlee in their own artistic interpretations.

The concert was aired on a special P. Ramlee channel in HD. To further strengthen the campaign’s proposition, popular P. Ramlee songs were played intermittently on our radios. Inspired by the campaign, Radio XFM gathered 18 young local musicians such as Monoloque, One Buck Short, Seven Collar T-shirt, Pop Shuvit and Bittersweet to record a cover version of the legend’s songs. All funds raised from selling the campaign merchandise went to Tabung Pustaka Peringatan P. Ramlee.

To mitigate occupational accidents involving Installers, a third party audit has been commissioned by the OSH Unit and Customer Division to ensure all installers follow safety rules while carrying out installation work at customers’ premises. In addition to this all new installers and their assistants are required to attend a one-day safety training to inculcate a safe working culture before commencing installation work. Existing installers are required to attend a half-day refresher training in order to have their annual contracts renewed.

Hazards identification, Assessment and Control

Astro takes the identification, evaluation and managing occupational hazards very seriously at the workplace.

Division-specific routine works

Line Managers submit completed Permit-to-Work (PTW) forms for assessment and approval prior to commencement of work by appointed contractors. Risk controls and contingencies are defined before and safety briefings are conducted before PTWs are issued. Line Managers are ultimately responsible for implementation and monitoring of the agreed hazard control measures prior to and during execution of work. Spot audits are conducted to determine the compliance levels with the agreed safety measures.

Based on 91 random audits carried out in 2012 (24.1% of all PTWs), compliance level for PTWs requirements maintained at 95% due to commitment for OSH by Line Managers and increased employee awarenes. When areas for improvement were identified, immediate discussion with line managers were conducted, corrective actions were agreed immediately and documented accordingly. Stop Work Orders were issued for jobs which did not comply with OSHE requirements and were lifted once the necessary OSHE precautions were taken before the works were allowed to resume.

production, marketing, sales and event management works

The Production Hazard Assessment (PHA) and Event Management Assessment (EMA) documents are used to identify hazards and control measures related to activities related to production (camera shoots), marketing, sales and event management. The evaluation process also includes management of audience in a studio environment. The process of applying and monitoring of PHA and EMA is identical to that of PTW. The percentage of PHAs audited by OSH Unit in 2012 is 141 or 15.1% of overall PHAs issued. The compliance level for productions stays at 95%.

occupational Safety, health and environment (oShe) week

The 8th and the 9th occupational Safety, health and environment (oShe) weeks were held in September 2011 and November 2012 respectively at the All Asia Broadcast Centre (ABC). Among the highlights of the 2012 OSHE week include:

• AMH Lose for Good programme which is based on the same concept of the Biggest Loser TV programme. Participants had to undergo two weeks of tough Boot Camp exercises and go

occupational Safety, health training

Training sessions for employees and contractors in 2012 amounted to 34,400 training hours, the highest record to date. To supplement this, the OSHE e-learning was developed in second half of 2012. The training consists of four modules, namely OSHE Management System, Planning, Implementation and Operations as well as Checking. It was launched on 2nd February 2013 and a total of 3,792 (84.6%) employees had enrolled and passed the e-learning test.

Year 2011 concludes our three-year commitment to the Astro Environmental Strategic Plan (ESP) for our main facility, the All Asia Broadcast Centre (ABC) in Bukit Jalil. Over the three years, we have committed to reductions in our Electricity, Water, Waste and Overall Carbon Emissions. We had achieved our target to reduce water during the ESP tracking period and we are still learning to overcome challenges in our electricity consumption. We continue to compare our consumption figures in 2012 with those reported during the ESP. However, with further expansion of the Company in 2013, a new baseline and corresponding ESP will be identified for a more accurate picture of our impact. To provide context to our ESP, we have compared consumption figures with the number of employees based in the ABC.

installation of the Uninterrupted Power Supply System in May. The continuous upgrading of our lighting systems reduced the overall costs of our electricity but an increase in staff contributed to the gradual rise in power consumption despite deep cuts in the first year of our monitoring. Efforts to reduce power consumption will continue in our efforts to be more efficient and environmentally-friendly.

48CArING For the eNVIroNMeNt

Our efforts in measuring our water consumption led to the detection of two burst underground pipes in 2009 which is reflected in the sharp rise of water consumption that year. The reparation of the two pipes saw a decrease in water wastage in 2010 and better in-house water management is attributed to the further reduction of water consumption in 2011 making this initiative a success in our commitment to reduce our intake of water in the facility.

Co2 emissions

Our CO2 emissions over the years correlate with our electricity consumption. Over the last three years, we have only measured our emissions in Scope 1 and a portion of Scope 2 of the All Asia Broadcast Centre in Technology Park, Bukit Jalil. Moving forward, we plan to include Scope 3 into our carbon accounting which will include our employees’ air and land travel. Our future carbon foot printing exercises will also include all the facilities that we operate from in the Klang Valley.

waste

The current challenge with regard controlling our waste lies in establishing the correct baseline and adopting an appropriate method to document these disposed items. We have currently appointed a new vendor in providing a standard measurement metric so we can start establishing a correct baseline moving forward. A facility-wide recycling campaign is also underway to encourage our people to consume less and recycle more for a healthier workplace environment.

ISo14001 environment Management Systems

Using the International Organisation for Standardisation’s (“ISO”) 14001 standards for environmental management systems, we closely monitor the impact that our operations have on the environment and we endeavour to reduce any adverse impact on the environment by having in place systems and processes to reduce waste. The Environmental Management System acts as an internal control to ensure the environment is put in the forefront in our day-to-day activities and our efforts led to Astro being awarded with the ISO14001 certification in 2009. The certification was then renewed in 2012, helping to generate greater awareness, not only among our employees but also among our business partners and vendors about the virtues of conserving resources and protecting the environment.
