NOTICES

NON-RESIDENTS’ WEEKEND SERVICES

Choral Evensong on Saturday 24 September will be the first public servicesince its restoration at which the organ will be heard.

On Sunday 25 September the morning Choral service will feature anaddress by Professor Michael Proctor FRS, Provost. Its title, ‘The Pathsof Glory’, is a quotation from Thomas Gray’s ‘Elegy Written in a CountryChurchyard’. The service is intended as a very positive contribution tothe University’s Alumni weekend. Non-Resident Members of College areespecially welcome together with alumni of other Colleges and membersof the public.

SUNDAY PREACHERS THIS TERM

We continue this term the series ‘Women of Spirit’ and look forward tobeing introduced to the lives and significance of some inspiring women. DrJane Williams, Associate Dean of St Mellitus College, London, will speakabout Amy Carmichael, missionary to India, and the Dean will exploreaspects of the life of Hildegard of Bingen. Three preachers have chosento speak about American women: Dr Beth Philips of Westcott Housewill introduce us to Flannery O’Connor, a writer who is especially well-known for her short-stories, Professor Geoffrey Ward FRSA, Principalof Homerton will base his sermon on the poet Emily Dickinson, andthe Chaplain will preach about the Roman Catholic social activist andpractical visionary, Dorothy Day.

On Remembrance Sunday our preacher will be Canon David Porter whois Chief of Staff and Strategy at Lambeth Palace – the headquarters of theArchbishop of Canterbury. David has extensive experience in working forreconciliation in the aftermath of conflict, especially in his home countryof Ireland.

RESTORATION OF THE CHAPEL ORGAN

This term marks the return of the Chapel organ, which has been silentsince January of this year. During this time it has undergone the mostsignificant restoration since the 1930s: all but the largest of the 4,388pipes were removed for cleaning and repair, while the internal structure,wind and electrical systems have all been overhauled.

If you are a returning visitor, you may notice that the sound is still therecognisable sound of the King’s College organ, with improvements tothe internal balance and a brightening of the sound as a result of extensivecleaning. Visually, you may also notice subtle enhancements thanks tothe cleaning of the woodwork and the regilding of the front pipes. Out ofsight and earshot, though, every element of this magnificent instrumenthas been cleaned, repaired and restored, and it is now fit for the nextgeneration of those who play it, sing with it, and listen to it.

We shall be celebrating the return of the organ on Tuesday 4 October whenthe distinguished American recitalist, Nathan Laube, plays at 7.30 p.m.,and on Wednesday 9 November, also at 7.30 p.m., when former King’sorgan scholar, Thomas Trotter (KC 1979), joins the Choir and BrittenSinfonia in a programme which will end with Poulenc’s Organ Concerto.

MUSIC

At the Sung Eucharist on Sunday 2 October and on Christmas DayHaydn’s Kleine Orgelsolomesse will be accompanied by strings. OnTuesday 1 November, All Saints’ Day, the Chapel Choir will be joined bythe tenors and basses of King’s Voices in Widor’s Mass in f sharp. The nextin the sequence of anthems commissioned in memory of the late MichaelBoswell (KC 1959) will be heard for the first time on Tuesday 22 November.This is Bob Chilcott’s (KC 1973) setting of O sing unto the Lord. TheSaturday organ recitals resume this term. Stephen Cleobury will give thefirst of these on Saturday 1 October at 6.40 p.m., and Richard Gowers,Organ Scholar, brings the series to a close on Saturday 26 November witha complete performance of Messiaen’s great celebration of Christmas, LaNativité du Seigneur. Richard is a former award holder from the NicholasDanby Trust and Jemima Stephenson, who plays on 12 November, is acurrent award holder.

MONDAY EVENING SERVICES

These are sung by King’s Voices, and normally follow the familiar patternof Choral evensong. However on Monday 28 November there will be anAdvent Sequence: readings on some of the traditional Advent themes(light, darkness, penitence, judgement) interspersed with apposite choralpieces. Also on Monday evenings we will this term have a reading fromthe spiritual writings of Julian of Norwich as the second lesson.

COLLECTIONS AT SERVICES

We are introducing a slightly new system this term. From now on allcollections will be primarily to support the work of the Chapel. However20% of all money received in collections will be given to charities asdetermined by the College’s Charitable Donations Committee chairedby the Chaplain. Please give generously. Envelopes are available for yourgift throughout the Chapel, please use them to contain your donation –completing the Gift Aid details if you are a UK taxpayer.

The Dean is always pleased to hear from anyone who would like to makea significant or ongoing donation to support some aspect of the Chapel’sactivity and service.

ADVENT AND CHRISTMAS SERVICES

The PROCESSION FOR ADVENT is a College Service for which ticketsare issued. Members of the public who would like to attend are invitedto queue for any seats that may become available on the day.

The CHRISTMAS EVE CAROL SERVICE was originally conceived as agift to the City of Cambridge and it remains a gift from the College tothe wider world. Those hoping to be able attend need to be prepared toqueue for several hours in advance. The queue is admitted from 1.30 p.m.The service runs from 3.00 p.m. until 4.30 p.m. and is broadcast by radioto an audience of millions around the world. We regret that this serviceis not suitable for very young children. A limited number of seats areavailable for those unable to queue. Please see the College website fordetails of how to apply.

Our SUNG EUCHARIST on Christmas Day begins at 11.00 a.m. Againa queue forms, and the congregation is admitted from 10.30 a.m. Theservice will last about 90 minutes. All are most welcome.

DAILY SAID SERVICES

In addition to our choral services, more intimate acts of worship areoffered each weekday in one of the side chapels. Normally, the Eucharistis celebrated at 12.30 p.m. If there is a Sung Eucharist in the evening,the 12.30 p.m. service that day will be the Office of Readings, at whichwe hear and reflect on passages both from the Bible and from the greatspiritual writers.

RECORDING

Please note that the use of cameras, recording equipment, video camerasand mobile phones is not permitted in Chapel. Some services and recitalsare recorded each week for webcasts. You can listen to these throughoutthe year on the King’s College website.

CHORAL SERVICES

Services are normally sung by King’s College Choir on Sundays andfrom Tuesdays to Saturdays. Services on Mondays are sung by King’sVoices, the College’s mixed voice choir. Exceptions are listed.

KING’S COLLEGE CHOIR CDS

Choir recordings are available from the King’s College website andfrom the King’s College Visitor Centre during the day. By purchasingthe Choir’s CDs from King’s College, you are directly supporting theactivities of the Chapel and Choir.

BECOMING A CHORISTER

If you have, or know someone who has, a son in Years 2, 3 or 4 athis school who likes singing and is enthusiastic about music, we wouldencourage you to get in touch with Caroline in the Choir Office, whocan tell you about the benefits that come with being a chorister, andanswer your questions about life in the Choir and School.
