The Address 1

When deciding where to stay in Dubai this

summer, you need to work out whether you want

to be Downtown or Uptown.

Downtown Dubai is a classy inland district

that’s home to all manner of exciting attractions.

Its beating heart is Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest

tower, a short hop from which is The Dubai Mall,

the world’s largest shopping and entertainment

destination. It’s also where you’ll find three

exquisite hotels – The Address Downtown Dubai,

The Address Dubai Mall and The Palace –

The Old Town.

The city’s Uptown district, meanwhile, has risen

up out of the desert in the last six years and is

home to hyper-modern buildings. At its western

border lies the beach and the Gulf – along with

seaside boulevards crammed with boutique shops

and gourmet restaurants. At its eastern edge lies

The Address Montgomerie Dubai, which is home

to a world-class 18-hole golf course designed by a

true legend of the game, Colin Montgomerie.

At Uptown’s centre is Dubai Marina, a man-

made harbour ringed with iconic buildings and

offering a phenomenal lifestyle to its thousands

of residents. It’s a self-contained community,

where Uptowners can walk or cycle to work along

Marina Walk, pop into The Address Dubai Marina

for wonderful evening meals or lazy afternoon

brunches, soak up the sun on the nearby beaches,

or shop in the Marina Mall – a focus for local life.

Having decided which of the city’s districts you’d

prefer to base yourself in, it’s time to start planning

activities for the perfect break: turn the page to find

out more...

The city of gold has two separate sides – Downtown and Uptown, both with a

unique feel and plenty of activities, restaurants, shopping and more on offer...

0The number of public ice rinks in the Middle East that are bigger than the Olympic-sized rink at

Dubai Mall.

160The number of stories that make up the Burj Khalifa, the tallest tower on Earth.

656The length in yards of the huge and tricky 18th hole

at the Montgomerie Dubai, a challenge for even the

best golfers.

leaping jets of water at The Dubai Fountain.

When you book to stay with Address hotels + resorts until August 29, you’ll be given some extra-special family-friendly benefits in the form of free passes for some of the city’s best attractions. And the more nights you book up, the better the benefits become. Book four nights and you can add a pass to children’s favourite Kidzania® into the mix. Finally, booking up a five night stay sees you receiving all the above plus passes to the inspiring sights of At The Top at Burj Khalifa: a tempting package. All this alongside some fantastic seasonal rates: perfect. Terms & conditions apply.

taKe the shuttLeIf you’re staying at The Palace - The Old Town, The Address Dubai

penguins, a giant octupus, giant spider crabs

and harbour seals. Finally, kids will love the ‘Living

Ocean’ zone, where they can check out leafy sea

dragons and moray eels.

Once you’ve been amazed by the natural

world, prepare to have your breath taken away

by the man-made one by visiting At the Top at

Burj Khalifa. Every major city has its landmarks –

London its Big Ben, New York its Statue of Liberty

and Paris its Eiffel Tower – but topping them all,

in terms of sheer size, is the 828-metre-high

Burj Khalifa. Its needle-like structure punctures

the clouds and provides an awe-inspiring,

postcard-perfect sight for visitors to Dubai. At the

Top is an observation deck on the tower’s 124th

floor – reached via a fascinating display on the

construction of the tower and an ultra-speedy

lift ride – which offers visitors jaw-dropping aerial

views of the city.

eNtertaiN your Kids aNd teeNsYour kids will love hanging out at KidZania®, a cool

edutainment centre at The Dubai Mall. KidZania®

is a real world in miniature, where kids can

dress up and play at being mechanics, painters,

firefighters and more, and be paid for their work

in the local currency, KidZos, which they can then

spend. At KidZania®, children learn life skills,

develop their physical and intellectual abilities and –

most importantly – have a huge amount of fun. It’s

the most imaginative theme park for children we’ve

ever heard of.

Older kids, teens and young-at-heart adults,

meanwhile, should head for SEGA Republic, a

76,000-square-foot theme park at The Dubai Mall.

It’s got a section specially for younger kids but

otherwise it’s open to all – so whether you’re 15

or 50 you can get involved with the latest arcade

games, plus motion-simulator rides, a spin coaster

and sports experiences galore.

maKe the most of the great outdoorsMake your way to the Uptown area for two brilliant

outdoor experiences. The first is taking a boat out

from Dubai Marina Yacht Club and going sailing.

The Yacht Club is right next to The Address Dubai

Marina – if you’re staying at the hotel you can get

the concierges to organise your sailing jaunt on

your behalf. You can head out on fishing trips or

simple pleasure cruises, and either hire your own

vessel or go out as a passenger on a crewed boat.

If you go for the pleasure cruise option, you’ll be

heading out in ‘The Athena Dubai’, a 50-foot, two-

level beauty which can happily accommodate 12

for a cocktail cruise or eight for a dinner cruise.

The other outstanding al fresco experience is

playing 18 holes of golf at The Montgomerie Dubai.

You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to activities, both Uptown

and Downtown. Here’s our pick of the best...

go out aNd about

eNJoy some retaiL theraPyDubai is rightly famed for its shopping – and

there’s nowhere more exciting to indulge your retail

therapy habit at The Dubai Mall. It spans some 12

million square feet and boasts all manner of first-

class attractions – including an Olympic-sized ice

rink and 22-screen cinema – as well as a dizzying

array of restaurants and cafés.

But it’s the stores that really make the mall,

all 1,200 of them – 165 of which are brands’

flagship outlets. Lovers of haute couture will have

a particular weakness for the mall’s label-loaded

Fashion Avenue and Galeries Lafayette, a multi-

level masterpiece that offers up floor after floor

of fantastic designer garb to the city’s sartorially

minded citizens.

Other big names to watch out for are New York

favourite Bloomingdales; bafflingly vast bookstore

Kinokuniya (or ‘Book World’); and the inhouse

Gold Souk, which plays host to dozens of

jewellers. There’s plenty on offer for kids, too,

including Dubai’s first and only branch of Hamley’s,

which helps to fire the imaginations of children

with over 100,000 toys, impromptu musical

interludes and magic shows performed by perma-

smiling staff.

Meanwhile, over in Uptown, you’ll find Dubai

Marina Mall, a great modern shopping spot built

around a huge, airy central atrium where local

residents meet up for a coffee and a chat before

hitting the stores. Once you’ve picked up some

new sports gear, a pretty dress or two, a watch

and perhaps even some jewellery, it’s time for you

to wander across to The Address Dubai Marina,

which is directly linked to the mall, for a slap-up

lunch at Mazina. Indulge in what’s served up at the

great Rotisserie grill.

taKe iN the sightsYou cannot leave Dubai before visiting Dubai

attraction at The Dubai Mall. Here you can peer

through the world’s largest viewing panel at over

33,000 aquatic creatures – everything from sand

tiger sharks to eagle-like stingrays and poker-faced

groupers – or take a stroll through the fish-filled,

water-ringed tunnel, where you just might see

divers feeding the fish.

Just upstairs on Level 2 is the amazing

Underwater Zoo. There are three environments

to explore in this extraordinary attraction, the first

of which is the ‘Rainforest’ where you experience

freshwater exhibits and see catfish, otters,

piranhas and water rats. Then there’s the ‘Rocky

Shore’, where you can meet a colony of Humboldt

penguins, a giant octupus, giant spider crabs

and harbour seals.

It’s a wonderful course, which covers 265 acres

and includes 14 lakes, 93 acres of landscaped

gardens and rolling fairways. You’ll find all the holes

exciting and challenging – particular joys include

the 13th, built in the shape of the UAE and with a

teeing area of 360 degrees, and the water-lined

ninth hole, a tricky par five. And when it comes to

relaxing after your game, you’ll find the terrace of

The Academy a heavenly spot to kick back with

some drinks.

iNduLge yourseLf at the sPaWhen it comes to pampering yourself, there are

five key spots you need to know about. The first is

The Spa at The Address Downtown Dubai, where

you’ll find reflexology, ayurveda and shiatsu, as well

as Hawaiian, Thai and Balinese massages. There’s

a dedicated room for aromatherapy treatments

as well as a cold room to help stimulate your

circulation before your massage begins.

Next up is The Spa at The Palace – The Old

Town, where there’s a host of touches you won’t

find in most spas, including Oriental bath houses

equipped with hammam tables. We recommend

booking yourself in for one of their wonderful

cleansing body wraps. Meanwhile, just next door

is The Spa at The Address Dubai Mall, where they

take a holistic approach to therapy: their body

scrubs are particular winners, especially when

finished off with a dreamily good head massage.

Over at The Address Montgomerie Dubai,

meanwhile, there’s an Angsana Spa, whose

therapists have all been trained in Thailand, and

deliver superb reflexology, massages and facials in

a tranquil, flower-scented space. Angsana places

great stock in using only natural ingredients

and fuses Eastern and Western techniques to

excellent effect.

Finally, at The Spa at The Address Dubai Marina,

you’ll find treatments using essential oils and spa

rooms overlooking the marina. For the ultimate in

relaxation, book their ‘Heavenly Harmony’ rituals

(for women) or ‘Ultimate Unwind’ (for men).

Hukama, a glorious place to indulge in authentic

Chinese cuisine. Dishes not to miss include the

sautéed seafood noodles, the wok fried sweet

and sour chicken, live scallops with yellow bean

crumbs, wasabi-coated king prawns and the

fabulous peking duck. And if you head down on

a Friday you can enjoy a traditional Yum Cha of

delicate dim sum and specialty teas.

If you’re in the mood for Thai food, you should

head to Thiptara at The Palace – The Old Town.

Thiptara means ‘Magic at the Water’, and the

setting, on the edge of the lake and illuminated

by flaming torches, is wonderful. You’ll love the

restaurant’s Bangkok-style seafood, and you

mustn’t leave without trying the tongue-tingling

phad prig Thai dam, a stir-fried mix of Alaskan crab

and black pepper sauce.

euroPeaNItalian delight Armani/Ristorante at the Armani

Hotel Dubai in the Burj Khalifa combines wonderful

Mediterannean ingredients with modern takes on

classic Tuscan dishes, making for an unmissable

dinner. For a less formal setting, the Armani/Peck

restaurant at the same hotel offers delicious fresh

pastas and wonderful take-out picnics. Another

laid-back affair for fine Italian dishes – the pizzas

are superb – is Esca at Qamardeen Hotel.

And for a European grill whose views cannot be

bettered, make a reservation at At.mosphere at the

Burj Khalifa. The steaks and seafood are superb

– but it’s the spectacle of the whole city unfolding

beneath you that’s the biggest draw. Another great

place for steak is Nezesaussi in Al Manzil Hotel,

where your cut of choice will be flame cooked

before your eyes.

offer at At.mosphere, a laidback lounge that’s

located 670 feet in the air on the 122nd floor

at the Burj Khalifa. It’s also got a great grill (see

‘European’, below).

Meanwhile, if you’re looking for a place with a

stunning setting for some al fresco snacks, check

out the Asian-themed FAI at The Palace – The Old

Town. FAI is ‘encircled by water, enlivened by fire’

– the water is the lake surrounding Burj Khalifa and

the fire comes from the atmospheric torches which

are dotted about the space. Get a seat on the

terrace and take in the jaw-dropping views of The

Dubai Fountain at work.

Another superb spot is on offer just round the

corner at The Address Downtown Dubai, on

whose 63rd floor you’ll find Neos. It boasts floor-

to-ceiling windows providing awesome views.

The décor is as opulent as it comes – exquisite

chandeliers, gleaming silver pillars and a central

area lined with designer chairs. You’ll also find a

great atmosphere and drinks at the Lounge at

Ember Grill at The Address Dubai Mall.

When it comes to preprandial drinks in Uptown,

there are two excellent options at The Address

Dubai Marina. The first is Shades, a poolside spot

which serves light meals and mezze throughout

the day and turns into a sophisticated lounge area

at night, complete with views of Dubai Marina and

cool background tunes courtesy of the in-house

DJ. Just around the corner is Blends, an upmarket

social hotspot where you can enjoy mini-wagyu

burgers, crispy fried calamari or, if you’re in the

mood for sharing, an excellent cheese fondue. For

more hearty fare, head to The Academy at The

Address Montgomerie Dubai and tuck into big

sandwiches, fantastic salads and superb burgers.

cafésIf you’re in the mood for afternoon indulgence,

take yourself to Risala in The Address Downtown

Dubai. It makes a speciality of its afternoon teas,

available in both Eastern and Western versions,

and both are truly to die for. Just down the road

at The Palace - The Old Town, there’s an equally

fantastic tea on offer at Al Bayt, a palatial spot that

offers high tea and super views.

If you’re spending the day shopping at The Dubai

Mall, why not break the trip up and catch your

breath at Karat at The Address Dubai Mall? Based

in the hotel’s lobby, Karat has a warm, welcoming

atmosphere and a grand line-up of coffees and

snacks. If you’re there in the afternoon, order one

of their Arabic Afternoon Teas – you won’t regret it.

In The Dubai Mall itself there’s the lovely

Madeleine Café & Boulangerie, a Parisian-style

spot with terrific views of The Dubai Fountain and

wonderful pastries. Those shopping at Marina Mall

on the other side of town should take their break

at Kambaa at The Address Dubai Marina. It’s a

relaxing retreat where the music comes courtesy Madeleine Café & Boulangerie
