hello, echo readers. 2011 has been an exciting year! in addi-tion to the fun events that happen downtown, Taste of downtown being one of my favourites, i was able to take a vacation and join an exciting new team sport this year.

My husband derek and i vis-ited my brother and his family in aliso Viejo. it’s about an hour drive south of Los angeles. Ken and rachael have two beautiful boys, paul and Luke, who was only one-month old at the time. we also visited disneyland and universal studios being that it was my first time in California!

Last February i went along with freelance writer Tanya orozco to watch the Tournament City derby dolls practice. it happened to be

a fresh meat night (that’s “recruit-ment” in roller derby language). at first i couldn’t stand in roller skates, but by the end of the night i was skating around the gym somewhat confidently. ever since that night i have been skating two times a week with the derby dolls. i passed my skating skills test in august and played in my first roller derby bout (game) in november!

i am hoping that a move to Kamloops will be in the stars for 2012. a shorter commute would be nice! does anyone want a vacation home in the shuswap?

happy new year everyone!Erin Johnson is the North Shore

and Downtown Echo’s production manager.

Rolling from Chase to California

dear Friends,i wanted to send some sort of

holiday greeting to you, but it is difficult in today’s world to know exactly what to say without offending someone.

so i met with my lawyer yes-terday and on his advice i wish to say the following:

Please accept with no obliga-tion, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non addictive, gender neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday practised with the most enjoyable traditions of religious persuasion or secular practices of your choice with respect for the religious / secular persuasions and / or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular tra-ditions at all.

I also wish you a fiscally suc-cessful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recog-nition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2012, but not without due respect for the calendar of choice of other cul-tures whose contributions to soci-ety have helped make our country great (not to imply that Canada is necessarily greater than any other country) and without regard to the race, creed, colour, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wishee.

by accepting this greeting, you are accepting these terms:

This greeting is subject to clari-fication or withdrawal. It is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the wisher to actu-ally implement any of the wishes for her / him or others and is void where prohibited by law, and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher. The wish is warranted to perform as expected within the usual application of good tidings for a period of one year or until the issuance of a new wish at the sole discretion of the wisher.

Best Regards (without preju-dice),

name withheld (privacy act).or simply said best wishes

and Merry Christmas to you and yours for 2012.

~Wenda, Penny, Erin, Carrie, Cristina, Marilee, Wayne, Ian, Will, Arlene and Tanya.

Greetings for the holidays

DeliveRing the gooDsOur downtown delivery gal Marilee

Manning (L) started a quest for better health 10 months ago by joining Curves

and since then has lost almost 20 pounds and over 23 inches. Marilee is very dedicated and not only gets her workout at Curves and delivering the

Echo, but also with swimming as part of her training for the Special Olympics!

Wayne Kuchyski (R) walks down Victoria Street this summer as part

of his weekly route. Wayne is an avid hockey fan and volunteers at both the Blazers and Storm games when he isn’t

busy curling.

Erin with Mr. Joe Black, a frequent visitor to the Echo office.

it has been an exciting year working in downtown K a m l o o p s , a n d have seen many changes in the downtown core.

although i had worked downtown for five years, it wasn’t until my job as an adver-tising consultant at the echo where i was able to really feel like a part of downtown

Kamloops. i’ve met many new people, as clients and friends, and am excited about the future and what the next year has to bring!

This was a year of completion and success for my children. i am so proud of their accomplishments. Jessica graduated from the nursing program, derek finished his sec-

ond year appren-ticeship and Tara continued with her bachelor of arts at T.r.u.

The echo and the staff are

always happy to sponsor and par-ticipate in the many downtown events. This year was no different – i’ve judged a salsa Competition dur-ing the Merchant Market, we built a scarecrow for the scarecrow Contest, took in many deli-cious appetizers at the Taste of downtown and braved the cold

weather to visit the merchants during Lights in the night. (we were even able to get a game of golf in that evening!)as well as many KCbia and Chamber socials.

i’m looking for-ward 2012, and the new challeng-es it may bring.

happy holidays and cheers to all!

entering a decade of good news

we have just wrapped up our ninth year of publishing your favourite little news-papers, the downtown and north shore echo!

as we embark upon our tenth year it dawns on me that following our dreams really does make them come to life. what started out as a novel thought, that each and every person has a story to tell and that we all need to hear some good news once in awhile, has transformed into the downtown and north shore echo. bringing good news to our neighbours is never tiresome and it’s so nice to hear many of our readers say, “i love that little paper!”

as the holiday season comes to a close it is only natural to spend some time reflect-ing on the year past and all that has hap-pened in it. There have been good times and bad, tragedy and joy and above all else a community who never quits. The holiday season is a time to take a break and revel in the appreciation of family and those who make a difference in your life and we are proud to call the people who inhabit the downtown and north shore neighbourhoods our family.

not only do we have the fortune of in-teracting with many of you on a daily ba-sis, but we thoroughly enjoy helping you spread the good news that separates Ka-mloops from so many other communi-ties. as a city, Kamloops must have the biggest heart in the nation, as around ev-ery corner there is good news. Fundrais-ers, charity events, people helping people, there is no shortage of happy news stories

and as a business we have taken it on as our mandate to help promote the good in our community.

new year’s is usually the time for out with the old and in with the new and al-though our neighbourhoods have seen many changes in the last year it is the old that makes the city so good. it is the dedi-cated business owners who through good times and bad have made these neigh-bourhoods their home, it is for the spe-cial people who work here, the ones who strive for excellence and are dedicated to improving life in the city. it’s the old-tim-ers and their hard work that have made it possible for all the new guys to come in.

From all of us here at The echo to you and yours, we wish you a very, very hap-py new year and wish you all peace, pros-perity and health for the upcoming year.

although i didn’t spend the entire 2011 year here at the echo, the time that i have spent has been action packed and full of learning.

i originally came to Kamloops ten years ago in search of a job as a nail tech, so you can imagine my sur-prise all these years later doing some-thing totally unre-lated. My journey here at the paper started in March

and it has been adventurous ever since. only four months had passed and i was already filling in as editor. in the nine months here i have learnt so much about downtown and have enjoyed all the different events, activities and fes-tivals. everything from racing Tanya at the 2nd annual scooter rodeo, eat-ing my way around downtown at the Taste of downtown

to seeing my very first play with wenda and Tanya at Mainstage.

outside of work was also adventur-ous. i spent sum-mer days kayaking and got my nose pierced as well i also went to my very first pow wow, saw Johnny winter and took my boys to Fright nights at playland.

i have had such a great year meeting all the awesome people who come

into and pass by the echo and can’t wait to make many more memories in 2012. now as soon as it snows enough i am going to go out and use the snow shoes i got

for my birthday. i can’t wait to try them out. happy holidays!

A year of new adventures

KFR couplings used in Firefighters MemorialEditor’s note: Imagine my surprise when I read the

media release about the Firefighters Memorial only to see my family name! The Harman Foundry was estab-lished in 1962 by my Great Uncle Jack and was the first sculpture foundry in B.C., later to be taken over by his son Stephen after Jack’s passing in 2001. Many works are permanent features around the Vancouver area such as: Bannister and Landy’s Miracle Mile at the PNE, Harry Jerome in Stanley Park, Themis Goddess of Justice and Lord Denning in the Vancouver Law Courts. Needless to say, I am very proud to have such amazing artists in my family!

in the spring of 2011, Kamloops Fire rescue (KFr) submitted brass hose couplings to the harman Foundry in red deer, alberta. These hose couplings have been in service at KFr since the early 1960s. Last week, KFr was informed that these couplings will be used in the

casting of the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Memorial in ottawa.

This memorial has been in the works for over a decade and is scheduled to officially open in 2012. The bronze elements are scheduled to be completed in March 2012 and delivered to ottawa in early april. The official dedi-cation of the new memorial and remembrance ceremony will take place in september 2012. This will be the first memorial for firefighters across Canada, allowing them a place in ottawa to honour those who gave their lives serving their communities.

The bronze elements are being manufactured in red deer, alberta at the harman Foundry. The harman Foundry has done some significant works in the past such as the Terry Fox Memorials in ottawa and Vancouver, and the parliament hill bronze statue of Queen elizabeth on horseback.

Life can be such an interesting ride. almost 10 years has past since i moved to Kamloops. an ontario native, i packed it in after graduation for the beautiful west coast. i enjoyed Vancouver for six years before making one of the best decisions of my life, moving to Kamloops. i have had many ca-reers over the years, one of which was a personal trainer. it was through this job that I first met wenda noonan, a dynamic per-sonality (and a bit crazy). i knew we could get along famously! she told me about an exciting new project she was embarking on. “i’m going to start a news-paper!” well, me being the me-dia oppor-tunist that i am, im-mediately suggested a fitness column. wenda loved it and so my first ex-perienc-es with The echo began. about a year later af-ter some career changes, the col-umn was no more but i was left with some fond memories and fun columns to look back on.

Fast forward nine years and my fate would bring me to The echo’s door once again. i made the crazy

yet exhilarating choice to join roller derby with the Tournament City derby dolls. i dove in head first and was on the board of directors for market-ing and sponsorship. The first order of business

was to get all media as a sponsor. so i called up wen-da and a new part-nership was born. well after a year of work with the derby dolls, peo-ple started to take notice of the mar-keting skills, including wenda from the echo. she called me up to meet for coffee one day and said i want you to join our team. The tim-ing couldn’t have been more perfect because after some sig-nificant life changes, this girl needed to get back out into the work force. so here we are, 10 years later and thing have come full circle. i am so thankful to have the oppor-tunity to work with this fabu-

lous group of ladies; i hope i can do them proud. what a ride… i can’t wait to see what the next 10 years has in store for me!

What comes around, goes around!

Cristina Ostopovich is the newest member of the Echo sales team - she started at the paper just this December. She’s no rookie though, in 2002 when the paper was first published, Cristina wrote a fitness column that ran bi-weekly in the Downtown Echo. Welcome aboard Cristina!

below zero and the north wind is increasing to near gale force. his wife has done nothing but look through the kitchen window and just stare.

he says that if it gets much worse, he may have to let her in.

Ode to Winter it’s winter in Canada and the gentle breezes blow seventy miles an hour at thirty-five below. oh, how i love Canada when the snow’s up to your butt you take a breath of winter and your nose gets frozen shut. yes, the weather here is wonderful so i guess i’ll hang around i could never leave Canada Cuz i’m frozen to the ground!

not another Canadian winter! The Michaels family

owned a small farm in Canada, just yards away from the north dakota border. Their land had been the subject of a minor dispute between the united states and Canada for generations. Mrs. Michaels, who had just celebrated her nine-tieth birthday, lived on the farm with her son and

three grandchildren. one day, her son came

into her room hold-ing a letter. “i just got some news, Mom,” he said. “The government has come to an agree-ment with the people in washington. They’ve decided that our land is really part of the united states. we have the right to approve or disapprove

of the agreement. what do you think?”

“what do i think?” his

mother said. “Jump at it! Call them right now and tell them we accept! i

don’t think i could stand another one of those Canadian winters!”

a New Year’s Eve surpriseJenny was taking an afternoon nap on new year’s eve before the festivities. after

she woke up, she confided to Max, her husband, “i just dreamed that you gave me a diamond ring for a new year’s present. what do you think it all means?”

“aha, you’ll know tonight,” answered Max smiling broadly.at midnight, as the new year was chiming, Max approached Jenny and handed

her small package. delighted and excited she opened it quickly. There in her hand rested a book entitled: “The meaning of dreams.”
